Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. There's a fine line between wine-and-cheese classical fare and whiney and cheesy metal. Here the Scorpions teeter, if often gracefully, on that line. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Moment of Glory.......2007-04-01

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars [].......2007-03-14

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

1 out of 5 stars dynamite!.......2002-10-21

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Moment of Glory for the Scorpions!.......2002-07-31

AWESOME is how I would sum up this CD. From the moment I first heard it, I knew I HAD to have it. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Resurrection Through Remastering.......2005-09-27

Modern science does indeed concern itself with the arts when it comes to state of the art remastering of some albums made too many years ago, before even stereophonic recordings were available. Such is the case with this newly released, remastered recording originally made back in the aurally immature 1950s. The original recording still exists (it has been worn thin in my collection) but this new edition on CD surpasses anything one could hope for.

But first things first. The Recital here is a shared one: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf offers twelve inimitable Schubert songs with the radiance and inner intelligence that marked her fine career. Her voice gleams and is silvery in the finest sense of the 'German sound'. Though she never was able to pull off the Italian repertoire, she was a brilliant interpreter of Mozart and Strauss on the opera stage. On the recital stage she, as a soprano, virtually owned the works of Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and the other Romantics. There is a wondrous communication in her singing, the knowledge that she is always placing the composer first without mannerisms that would stamp her singing as 'Schwarzkopfian'. For this set of songs she is matched with the equally fine pianist Edwin Fischer: this is a true collaboration. Find a finer 'An die Musik' or 'Im Frühling' if you can: there simply aren't many as sung by a soprano!

The second portion of the Recital belongs to Fischer and he plays Schubert's 'Moments musicaux for piano, D. 780' as if to the music born. This is magnificent pianism and interpretation. When the entire recital is played it makes the kind of sense that few artists offer today. This is a terrific musical experience. Grady Harp, September 05

Album Description

One moment relentless, another stark and beautiful, the 12-song recording, which was mixed by the masterful John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, The Breeders, Jay Farrar) and produced by Five Eight and Geoff Melkonian (of the Josh Joplin Group), is an engaging yet volcanic amalgam of manic infused melodic rock that flows and explodes from song to song as the band delves into the darker depths of life, death, regrets and relationships. Throughout, Five Eight takes on desperation and gives it hope through soul and song, something (drummer) Mike Rizzi describes as "personal and heartbreaking, for the most part, but for some reason I want to sing them loud". Indeed, never before has it been so enjoyable to listen and sing along to someone else's pain.

On tracks such as "I'm Still Around," "I Don't Give a Damn" and "Lousy Decision," Five Eight matches defiance and disappointment with deft melodies that harken back to the definitive Athens sound, standing firmly on the great side of pop music. "A Man Is A Pent Up Thing" and "Square Peg," on the other hand, hit with insistent punk rhythms that pace angular guitar textures while "Bad Juices" and "Bad For Us" take a more melancholy approach, yet strike with intensity through impassioned deliveries, smart harmonies and escalating conclusions.

And perhaps the album's opener, "Criminal," sums up best the journey taken on Five Eight. Tackling a person's paralyzing guilt for causing the death of a friend, "Criminal" charges ahead with a propulsive punk rhythmic vibe, and then twists and turns through evocative pop territory as it allures with distinctive countermelodies and builds to a climactic end, with (singer) Mike Mantione declaring, "I'm so gone." But just as the next song begins, he affirms, "I'm still around." It's a segue that provides a glimpse to an underlying theme throughout the album, a question Mantione poses as: "What if your world changes so drastically that the pain overwhelms you? What do you do?"

Mantione's answer: "I play in this band."

5 out of 5 stars Five 10.......2005-01-05

I have to give this band a 10 out of 10 on this one. Mike Mantione has once again proven why this band deserves the recognition it doesn't give a crap to have. A small-club band that sounds best LIVE braaks free on this release, leaving me feeling like the proud parent of a kid going off to college. I'm proud for their success but wish they would come back home and play the intimate clubs where I feel like I am the only person in the crowd. But they deserve so much more than that. Do yourself a favor and get this album. Go see them when they are in town. For they are not a child anymore. Well, actually, they are. And that's why I love them.

3 out of 5 stars GASOLINA PT. 2.......2004-09-04

I hate to write this...but,
I have been a big Five-Eight fan since around '92 and while I am all behind changing, evolving, etc... I can't help but what wonder if this is the same guy i loved listening to? Granted the guy can play guitar, write amazing lyrics and so on. However starting with Gasolina there seems to be a drastic shift in sense of melody and passion. On I Learned Shut Up, The Angriest Man, and Weirdo this band was THE best thing around and how they not made it huge, i don't know. But starting with Gasolina (omit the strange The Good Nurse...very different, and I give them credit for drastically trying something new)
This seems like a cliched sort of alt. rock. Don't get me wrong this is decent, but the first three were unique changed your life when you first heard them. Even "A Man Is A Pent Up Thing" does not compare to the original version. Growing is not always good and this band is case in point. Mantione has written some absolutely amazing things and lately has written some things i wouldn't give to an enemy (Guitar, RIGHT TO DRIVE???, Summer vacation, ETC..)
Now I'm not one who cares for sound quality (polished) but I do love passion regardless of what style of music and I can't help but feel that this band is simply making a living and not as hungry as it once was. Again this is still better than 95% of what is on the airwaves now.....Buy It then discover the first 3.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Band..........2004-07-05

Thank you Five Eight for making another excellent rock album. Raw energy and beautiful lyrics is what makes this album so incredible. I have listened to their other stuff, but I cannot stop listening to this CD. My favorite song on the disc is A Man Is A Pent Up Thing. Originally released on The Angriest Man CD, this song grabs me everytime I hear it. Mike sings, "I've got to love someone some way, I got to make it some someday, It's in my blood, When I write the greatest song, Well you know I still won't belong..." One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. Go out and buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever.......2004-07-05

Five Eight ceases to amaze me. Been a fan for years and when I thought that they couldn't get any better, they do. This album can stand next to any release in 2004. Buy this CD & turn up the volume and play Square Peg. I promise you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD by a great band!!!.......2004-06-04

I have been listening to Five-Eight since happening upon them opening for Firehose at Trees in Dallas back in 1990. They grabbed me the minute I walked into the club, and I have been a huge fan ever since. Mike Mantione is a truly unique frontman. His frenetic guitar playing and nonstop energy on stage is like nothing else I have seen. And his song lyrics are genuine and heart-felt. I have actually used some of his lyrics in high school poetry units I have taught. I can only describe Five-Eight's combination of raw energy, humanity, and brutal honesty as being kind of like a spastic kid who has an uncontrollable fit, does his damage, has a quiet moment of embarrassment and shame after realizing what has happened, and then goes on and does it all over again. Their music captures true emotions and moments (feelings of rejection, neglect, alienation, misguided devotion, coming from a dysfunctional family, coping with loss, being a parent, and being a part of this grand, over-medicated world we live in), and it says it in words I wish I had written. I have, on several occassions, been brought to tears upon hearing certain lines from their songs (ie. "Goddamn It Paul," "She's Dropping the Bomb," and "Florence"), and the new self-titled CD is no different. "Square Peg" deals with Mike's life-long feeling of not quite fitting in, "I'm Still Around" captures the band's ability to write a great hook and melody, and "A Man Is a Pent Up Thing" (previously released on 1993's "Angriest Man" EP)explores the fine line between wanting and trying to belong and the struggle to control and hide the fears of it not working out. This is a great band and a great CD, and I wish every music fan could sit down and give them a listen. I only wish they would come through Texas a little more often.

I do not know what I was thinking of when I bought this CD. Think Yanni crossed with a generic string quartet, but without enthusiasm. The energy normally found in Shania's music is simply absent. Come to think of it, another one-word summary of this disk is "limp". (Note: the recorded musicians play their instruments far better than I ever could.)

    5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2006-12-13

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?

    Please make your own decision.

5 out of 5 stars Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05

... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.

This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.

I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)

5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22

Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28

I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.

This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.

There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.

Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

    4 out of 5 stars very enjoyable.......2001-07-19

At first, I'd like to correct error. The pianist, Larisa Gergieva is NOT Varely Gergiev's WIFE! She is his sister. (Elder one, I think.)

About this disc, I enjoyed this recital. Gorchakova is one of my favorite soprano. Her voice is suited well to these Russian songs. It's interesting for me to her Russian songs. If you want to hear more Russian songs, try "Songs of Desire" by Olga Bolodina from Philips.

5 out of 5 stars The showcase for the Spinto soprano.......2000-04-25

Galina Gorchakova, Kirov's leading lady, is a true spinto soprano, not the more common forced lyric one. Her sound is unique and quite unusual, almost "mezzo-ish" at certain times, but with surprisingly easy resonant top. I could not help being reminded of another great Russian Galina - Vishnevskaya, the Bolshoi prima donna of 60s and 70s up to her departure from Communist regime with her husband Mstislav Rostropovich. Since then, there was an unsettling vacuum in the realm of sopranos capable of singing Russian and Italian repertoire. Luckily, Gorchakova seems ready and able to take on most of Vishnevskaya's signature roles, including Katerina of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk." Her clarity of diction and musical intelligence are a pleasure to hear particularly on the Programme presented here because the romances (a leader-like Russian art songs) are written to some of the most beautiful Russian poetic texts.

I feel it is important to note that neither the singing nor accompaniment here is flawed at all, as the reviewer below found. Furthermore, there is no tendency to "go flat". The only thing that came as a surprise to me was inclusion of several numbers written originally for a baritone or even a bass, such as "It Was in Early Spring" or "I Remember the Wonderful Moment." However, they were executed so brilliantly, it made me forget about the specifics and just enjoy Gorchakova's beautiful voice and expressiveness.

Most of you probably got a chance to see the MET's magnificent production of Tchaikovsky's "Pique Dame" with Gorchakova, Domingo, Borodina and Hvorostovsky in leading roles. Aside from Lisa, Gorchakova is also an incredible interpreter of highly demanding role of Elisabetta from Verdi's "Don Carlo" and Leonora from his "La Forza del Destino." I can't wait to hear her "Aida." Amazingly she does not struggle with dramatic Verdian repertoire, even though it lays relatively high for such a voice. And its power allows her to cut through heavy orchestration with ease, preserving flowing, and seemingly endless vocal line with no audible breathing. Philips generously provided us with several phenomenal Russian complete opera recordings featuring Gorchakova's talents: check out "Prince Igor," "The Maid of Pskov," "Iolanta," and "The Fiery Angel," the latter one being a rare jewel and destined to become one of the greatest recorded achievements of all time. Ms. Gorchakova is also a very good actress with a beautiful stage presence and somewhat reserved but passionate delivery. Hearing this CD is essential for Russian romance fans as well as for those who want to hear a true spinto soprano at its full glory, accompanied only by a subtle gentle piano of Larissa Gergieva. I was particularly impressed with a booklet that finally has Cyrillic texts instead of despicable way of spelling Russian words with English letters. There are also good English translations by Philip Taylor that stay true to the texts but also convey their romantic feel. If I could, I would have given this disc ten stars!

4 out of 5 stars Flawed but beautiful.......2000-03-16

This album of wonderful Russian romances and art songs is marred only slightly by Galina Gorchakova's tendency to go flat. Still, her unbelievably beautiful soprano voice and emotional connection with these pieces more than makes up for this. Gorchakova has never become quite as well known as her compatriots Olga Borodina and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and hasn't recorded as much as they have either. This is a shame; I would love to hear her in some of the Italian verismo repertoire. Her rich spinto sound would serve her well, and I believe that she is known for such interpretations as Butterfly, Liu, and Tosca. I would also like to her her Lisa on recording (from Pique Dame).

Anyway, this album is truly beautiful. Larissa Gergieva, the pianist, is the sister of Valery Gergiev, the director of the Kirov Opera in St. Petersburg. I think possibly some nepotism is happening here, as she is not an ideal accompanist. Still, she supports Gorchakova well, and doesn't detract from the beauty of these pieces.

I picked up this CD by accident. To much of my surprise, I was so moved from the very first song, until the last note of the CD. It not only makes me wanting to listen to it over and over again, it makes me to sing along with some of the songs. Irish blessings is a great song, and the chorus makes it even a better song. I highly recommend this CD.
