About the Artist
"Whatnot" is the Acoustic/New Age vehicle of guitarist and composer Richard Franklin. Perhaps better known as a "smooth jazz" player, this CD showcases music featuring acoustic guitars. Richard's early musical background was in classic guitar - as a student of Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Sophocles Papas, his lineage goes directly back to the great Andres Segovia. A very successful classic guitarist, he performed extensively in recital and with orchestras; he also won a number of performance competitions. Acoustic guitar music flows naturally from this well.
The music of "Whatnot" is readily accessible, even on the first hearing, as it features lush harmonies, attractive melodies, and warm acoustic guitar tone. Repeated listening will be rewarded with an appreciation of the care, skill and subtlety with which this material is crafted and performed. The music is positive, up-beat, and always very satisfying.
A Forest for the Trees,Whatnot,ALMODOVAR MUSICA,Tropical meets Latin Soul. Puertorican singer/songwriter from Memphis,Tennessee blends Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, and ChaChaCha rhythms with Southern Soul and R&B.

Forest for the Trees architect Carl Stephenson cowrote "Loser" with Beck and coproduced Mellow Gold. The best song on this debut, "Dream," is a five-minute wonder: a killer bagpipe riff, some stray sitar, a hip hop-inspired beat, and a creamy pop chorus. The lyrics are supremely silly, but it doesn't matter much; it's so shamefully infectious you can be forgiven for loving--or hating--it. Beyond "Dream," Forest for the Trees is a heavily-stitched quilt of processed vocals, programmed drum beats, guitar that ranges from metal to flamenco, and new age mutterings that don't quite cover the skeletons posing as songs. "Infinite Cow" is a nursery rhyme masquerading as Eastern mysticism, and "Tree" has lyrics that would make Jonathan Richman cringe: "Hey, tree--won't you talk to me?/I can see you breathing." Unlike Beck's Odelay, Forest for the Trees is a musical hybrid that never quite takes. Or rather, it only succeeds completely on one song. --Keith Moerer

This CD Rules! Also Features Beck! ~~~DOPE~~~.......2006-02-01
If you love Beck, you will love this album...It is killer!! Most of the songs are indie great! With Beck's original co-producer who produced "Loser"; Karl Stephenson plays and produces this album with BECK! The sounds are so amazing....
Why did I not find this album sooner? I knew nothing about the album until just the other day. These songs are reminiscent of Loser to some degree. The sounds are excellent! Just to hear Beck playing Harmonica and background vocals makes buying this album worth it alone...But it doesnt stop there...
Best & Peace
One of the only true philisophical albums in existence.......2003-10-15
Like many people I had heard the catchy `Dream' single when it got a lot of play on MTV, back in 97. But unlike most, I have been privileged to hear all of his other wonderful and mind expanding songs on the album. This album has been one of my true loves throughout all of my musical experiences, and I can safely say it always will be. As stated above, this is one of the only true philosophical albums I have ever come across. The theories and ideas expressed throughout the entire CD will not only challenge you to focus on the intricate melding between the lyrics and the amazing sampling, but also to think of greater possibilities about life and the universe as a whole. This album did not receive the recognition it truly deserves, but then again, I think it works on a higher level then what most of us are used to.
it's been six years since i listened to this..........2003-09-21
and i still get the songs stuck in my head. i think it's pretty amazing. this doesn't happen with a whole lot of cds, especially ones i haven't listened to in ages.
dream is probably the only track that deserves to be on the radio, although there are some other songs that are equally awesome like you create the reason, tree, planet unknown, green light street... the rest of the songs are probably some of the quirkiest sounds you'll ever hear outside of almost anything. these tunes are kind of like the feeling you'd get if you're in yoshi's island and just ate one of those floating cotton balls. the screen gets distorted, colors change and everything seems to sound like a horn played far far away. but no matter how weird it gets, it's always a solid song.
there are songs here that are great if you're in the mood, and some that are great no matter what. although there are some weak parts, like a few of the later tracks. that won't matter though, because you can get this for a quarter plus shipping right now on amazon. buy it for dream, everything else is just nice.
A flowing trip........2003-06-05
A creative odyssey that breaks all the rules but somehow still works if you are open to something totally different. I can see how some could say that it is incoherent at times but if you really listen, everything fits beautifully and is actually quite mesmerizing.
it's a shame.......2002-11-25
I was really surprised to see the negative reviews of this album. Sure not all the songs are not as accessible as Dream might be, but overall I really enjoy listening to the creative ramblings that this album goes through. As for people not liking the lyrics it's sad to see so many people judge them so harshly. Radiohead and Nirvana and even the Doors have lyrics that don't make "sense", but they're still cool to listen to. It's a shame that more people don't have a more open mind for these kinds of things. It's a great album if you're into fun experimental music.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis
Amazon.com
Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2001-07-29
This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.
Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22
This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.
This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.
if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26
this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great
The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02
When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!
Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25
Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.
This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

A superb introduction to Bax.......2007-02-16
I'd never heard of Bax when I picked this up from the library. I was just getting into tone poems and symphonic poems at the time, so I decided to check it out. I was surprised by what I heard. The music was very beautiful, very interesting, and very nice. I found myself listening to the CD again and again without getting bored. The pieces were quite lovely, played wonderfully, and I found myself wondering more about this composer Bax.
There are five symphonic poems on this CD. Each one is different, with a different sort of theme or concept. While it seems that Tintagel is the best known, my personal favorite was November Woods, which is low, beautiful, and mysterious. The sound is good enough for me (as someone who knows little about sound quality and only knows that it sounds GOOD), the playing is beautiful enough for me, and the deal is great. This was a great disc to get introduced to a very interesting composer through a few orchestral pieces that weren't too long and difficult to concentrate on. Every song on here is nice to listen to, played well, and is very good.
I recommend this for anyone who wants to get into Bax but doesn't know where to start. This is a great introduction.
Nicely done, but . . ........2006-07-09
This was my first exposure to Bax in some depth, having heard only Tintagel before. I was quite taken by that piece. I still like it.
The balance of the CD, though very well played and produced, I didn't like at all. Ear-splitting, strident, unbalanced, ragged. Very hard to listen to.
Along with this I bought a CD of his syphonies. Not my cup of tea, either. I still like Tintagel, but the rest of Mr. Bax you can have.
The perfect introduction to Bax.......2006-01-10
It wasn't until Chandos released Bryden Thomson's first disc of Bax tone poems in the Early Digital Era that I became enamored of his music. I'd found myself resistent to his symphonies, which tend to meander, and, even many years later, I'm still not crazy about them. But the tone poems are shorter, more straight-forward, and quite marvelous. For someone who hasn't heard Bax, I'd say take Debussy, Elgar, and Holst, stir them up together, and you have something of an idea what he sounds like.
Thomson did a great job with the tone poems, wallowing and luxuriating in their richness. The problem is, 20+ years later, the early digital sound is more annoying than it was at the time. The strings are missing weight and body, the brass are shrill, etc.
This Naxos disc has really nice sound--full mid-range and bass, good clarity, warmth. Lloyd-Jones moves the pieces along with more momentum than Thomson did. (Boult did the same, in a Lyrita disc that isn't easy to find now.) In Lloyd-Jones' account of the Bax symphonies for Naxos, that's a plus, because it reins in their meandering quality to some extent. In the tone poems, I rather like a little "wallowing." But Lloyd-Jones' approach is perfectly reasonable, and, for this listener, represents at least an interesting change. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is a little underpowered in the strings, but consists of first-rate musicians, and plays quite well.
If you haven't heard Bax, this is a great place to start, at the right price, too. If you know Bax's music, this is a happy alternative version. (Most, if not all of these pieces were included as fillers with the Lloyd-Jones symphonies, but it's worth it, in my view, to have them together in this format.)
MUSIC FOR TOURISTS.......2005-08-08
Whether Bax's symphonic poems were ever used as sound-tracks for 1950's films I have no idea, but that's the sort of sound they have. They are obviously 20th century music, but of a fairly traditional and romantic kind. They evoke legends in a rather superficial way, and I suppose they have `atmosphere' of much the kind that tourist books about legends have. They take us in turn to Cornwall, Ireland, a generalised pastoral scene of Greek legend, Scotland and the Chilterns. The composer was of East Anglian roots himself, and I would have thought that that part of England had plenty of individuality of its own, witness the poems of Crabbe to say nothing of the music of Britten. However if Bax's concept of East Anglia was less that marvellous coast than, say, Sudbury or Long Melford, it's easy to understand how he might have sought his inspiration further afield.
It is the duty, and it should be the pleasure, of a fair-minded reviewer to say at once that the performances here are excellent, and the recording too. It is particularly gratifying to me to be able to say again that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is well on the way to taking its place among the world's finer orchestras. These compositions call for a bold and rich sound, and that is forthcoming here, as is some fine solo work from the orchestral principals. All the same, what I look for in second-league music like this is something completely special in the readings, the kind of wizardry that Beecham could supply. Perhaps that will be the next step in this orchestra's progress. For now, there's nothing essential missing, and this disc should be a pleasant addition, moderately priced, to anyone's collection.
These symphonic poems are what I might term `intermediate' programme-music. They are not overtly representational as Strauss sometimes is, but the programme is more detailed and specific than in, say, Sibelius's Tapiola or The Oceanides, which can perfectly well be heard as `absolute' music, related in only a vague and impressionistic way to their titles and supposed themes. I find that I get the greatest enjoyment out of them if I secure a reasonably clear mental picture to start with of what they are about, and link the episodes in the music to that as they go along. Without some steering of this kind I doubt I could really identify, for example, `a tonal impression of the castle-crowned cliff of...Tintagel', or necessarily be able to distinguish it from the sea rising to overwhelm the island at another point. To obtain this mental image I naturally resort to the liner note, which does this basic job adequately. I have to say, on the other hand, that this short essay is not its author's best. Exactly what is Bax's relationship to Ireland, for instance? After reading a poem by Yeats at age 19 he appears to have `discovered in himself a strong Celtic identity'. What might this be, `a strong Celtic identity', and is it any different from suburbanite dreams of getting away from it all? And if `the garden of Fand is the sea' and later `Fand's garden is seen no more' we appear to be encountering some apocalyptic catastrophe. A bit more thought and care in the writing would have been welcome, considering that points like these have an important bearing on the music.
Niggles like this aside, this is a very fine disc in the most important departments, namely the performance and recording. At a bargain rate in particular it can be thoroughly recommended, and it may be quite a while before we hear these pieces played and recorded so well again.

The Nutcracker to end all Nutcrackers.......1999-05-01
As you would expect, Mravinsky and his team locate a hundred times more passion and intensity in this music than any western orchestra. This is not the standard suite of movements, but Mravinsky's own selection of numbers, and all the more interesting for that. Francesca is an added bonus. If you don't love this CD, you can't love Tchaikovsky!

Customer Reviews:
Must Have for Any Jussi Fan.......2001-03-11
It takes a few weeks to get this CD, but it's well worth the wait to hear the earliest recordings of Bjorling. Many of the cuts are in Swedish and include not only opera but operetta and other lighter fare. Though his voice was glorious at any age, it is wonderful to hear how he sounded at the beginning of his career. One real treat is some 1920 recordings of the childhood Jussi with his his two brothers, Olle and Gosta. In Psalm No. 4, the fine vocal ability of the nine year old Jussi presages what will become one of the most splendid tenor voices in opera history.

Customer Reviews:
The Young Bjoerling Sings Magnificently In His Native Swedish.......2007-01-11
Charming songs, sung with youthful ardor by an outstanding tenor who would soon win deserved acclaim in the world of opera with his voice and skill and dedication to his craft.
The transfers seem to be very well done, although there seem to be occasional very slight wobbles, which may have been due to the nervousness of the young singer or perhaps to some pitch variation in the recordings. These, if I have not merely imagined them, do not detract from the enjoyment of hearing this great tenor in his promising youth.
This is a wonderful recital and a great bargain at the very low prices now asked by some of the Amazon sellers.

Customer Reviews:
the early days of the golden voice.......2001-11-17
These are historical early recordings of the incomparable Bjorling, one of the greatest and most loved voices of the 20th century, starting when he was 18 years old in 1929, through his 25th year.
This was well before his prime, which was from 1945 to his untimely death at 49 in 1960, but the extraordinary beauty of his voice is there, with amazing strength, considering his youth. The clarity and purity of his golden tone shines through, even though these recordings show their age.
The repertoire is varied with lovely ballads mixed with well known arias. With the exception of the later arias on Disc 2, they are all sung in Swedish. Two big favorites are track # 18 on Disc 1, and # 10 (# 30 on the amazon listing) on Disc 2.
The bonus tracks: These were made in 1920, when Bjorling was 9 years old (he made his debut at age 5 !), and though these 5 tracks are not something one would want to listen to for pleasure, the sound quality being dreadful, they are fascinating and have their historical value.
Though this is far from the best Bjorling you can buy, even the less than perfect Bjorling is still remarkable, and an exquisite delight to hear.
