Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The Last Emperor, director Bernardo Bertolucci's epic tale of Pu Yi, the exiled final potentate of China's 3,000-year old Qing dynasty, was the big winner at the 1988 Academy Awards, taking Oscars for (among others) Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score. The composing trio of Sakamoto/Byrne/Su was an unusual one to be sure, but it's clearly Sakamoto who carries the day here. The avant-garde trained/former Yellow Magic Orchestra pop mastermind crafted a seamless fusion of grand Western themes, Asian shadings, and his own deliciously distinct timbrel sensibilities; an accessible if deceptively modern classicism. Not surprisingly given his Talking Heads roots, Byrne's efforts are more rhythmic and minimal, yet his consuming passion for world music thoroughly evidences itself as well. His lyric and lilting "Main Title Theme" (one of the film's unusual elements was its use of two main themes by separate composers) may offer a pleasant surprise to listeners overly familiar with his pop work. The composer Cong Su is represented by just one cut; but it's a gentle, ethereal spin on Chinese folk influences that fits well with his fellow composers' work. --Jerry McCulley

Masterly.......2007-02-09
This is Ryuichi Sakamoto at his best. I must confess that I never play the David Byrne tracks. They're just not in the same league.
The Last Word on "The Last Emperor" .......2007-01-18
Rather than this being a "word of mouth" review and purchase, it is a "word of another CD". First, I love Chinese traditional music and the Western approximation instruments, pipa [lute], gu-zheng [zither], erhu [violin] and diza [flute]. The deep spiritual, mystical sound is hypnotic and moving. I recently discovered the Asian music company, Pacific Moon and its range of artists. One artist is Jiang Xiao-Qing and her CD, "Breathing Spaces." [Such a quiet joy] The last cut, # 11 is the Theme from the Last Emperor, and it is so haunting and beautiful, it led me to wonder about the actual soundtrack. In both CDs the magic of Ryuichi Sakamoto's writing and arranging will take your breath away with where it takes you. Both are to be played during a time you really want to simply think, drift and drop back into your own sense of self. Now that part of my Chinese music section is complete--If you like to close the door and simply relax, give yourself a real treat! It's worth the trip to the computer to buy this treasure from Amazon.com. Kathleen Rand Reed
Overrated movie, but nice soundtrack........2005-11-08
'The Last Emperor' is a very overrated movie, but this is a nice and soothing soundtrack that accompanies the film. I was surprised David Byrne composed a few of the tracks. Listen to it before going to bed. One will have an easier time falling asleep.
A Little Contrived..........2001-09-28
...but entertaining, none-the-less.
It is always fun to track down anything David Byrne has worked on, but this soundtrack is a wee disappointing. While listening to the soundtrack (as opposed to watching the movie which it underscores) you always have a sense that this is somehow a synthetic interpretation of what you expect when you look at the forbidden city...almost westernized.
It's great music, and a great and cohesive effort, but many of the repetitive melodies sound as if they might be more at home in Broadway hit than a period piece about the declining days of Chinese aristocracy.
If you saw the movie and enjoyed the music (as I did) there is no reason not to pick this disc up. If you are buying this because you think you are getting some authentic Chinese music...keep shopping.
The Last Emperor: tragic story told through music.......2001-07-24
After seeing the film for the first time, I was stunned by the amazing beauty and emotional content that could be created by simply telling a tragic real-life story. But it wasn't until buying the soundtrack that I realised, although the film would have been incredible and artistic on its own, it was the music that created the depth of mood that made the film so poignant. The tracks are hauntingly beautiful, and reflect all aspects of the film; the culture, the sorrow and the reminiscence of another era long gone. I recommend the soundtrack for anyone who has seen and loved the film. The combination of traditionally Chinese instruments with "a Western touch" is brilliantly skillful, and will appeal even to those who haven't had a preference for classical music before. Although the last couple of tracks may falter with Red Guard music and chants, the vast majority are instantly recognisable and deeply touching.

Customer Reviews:
dont listen to these reviewers.......2005-02-19
i havent listened to this album, so dont mind my 5 stars. why is it that other people reviewing this album regard this album is dead prez's second album?! IT'S A COMPILATION!!!! dead prez has only 2 songs on this album murda box and behind enemy lines.
an acquired taste.......2004-05-20
I bought this album because i was looking for some concious hip-hop in an age of crap rap. At first I was less-than-impressed. After listening to the album a few times through however - seriously people - i became hooked. I'm talking all day - every day. This album seriously played for a month str8 in my discman. Some songs are indeed wack - Hurricane G for instance sucks! But on a whole this compilation is the shiznit. This album brings attention to a serious struggle and is worth far more than a 50 cent piece for true hardcore hip-hop heads.
NO GOOD.......2004-01-02
Buy the first CD, this one is garbage, for a winner from dead prez, you gotz to get the first one!!!!
Not what I expected........2003-01-10
I loved dp first cd let's get free. Their political, social, and musical commentry and criticism uplifted and inspired. With ill, and at times, off tempo and original beats and production, I don't see how a rap fan could not like it. But NO MORE PRISONS is no good.. a few decent or good tracks like Evolution,Outa Site, Hold the Key, Rich Get Rich, and Behind Enemy Lines which isn't even a new song, It was on the first album. It's also the only song only by DP on the album, Murda Box features em and is ok, dope at times but the production doesn't captivate my attention and it kind of irritates me. Battley Cry is decent too. More prisons is a nice short cut. Too much is trying to be old school, and good lyrics, but could be much better with better production and delivery.
Much short of what I expected and many tracks that should've been dropped. Needed more DEAD PREZ too.
THE MESSAGE..........2002-11-24
... here is we dont want no more prisons, let people [commit crimes] the world over becuase everything is racist and everyone is against us.... WT...?????!!!!!!
i wonder what dead prez would think of abolishing prisons if somebody was killing their mothers?

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Customer Reviews:
Decent Quality, But a Little Rushed.......2002-09-20
I have to agree that this is a good collection of music for the money, especially if you are a novice at the Classics like me. Each disc covers a 40 year period with an hour of music and a little bit of history in the cover slip. However, there were some oddities that made me question the quality of this product. First, a few of the songs seemed like the conductor was hurrying them along so the songs on a disc would add up to exactly one hour -- where's the love? I know I'm a novice, but there are just some songs that are so famous that you can pretty easily tell when they are being butchered or compressed. Second, the quality of the product was suspect. Some of the discs looked like they were manufactured in 1990 and some in 1994. The older ones just had the titles on the discs and the newer ones had a screen-printed color change with no information. They couldn't even use the same type of Jewel Case throughout the collection. In total, it's good for beginners and the money, but not much else.
Decent, but not exciting.......2002-09-01
Not bad, but not a perfect as well. The music selection is very questionable for my taste. The performers are not always very suitable for specific masterpieces. It is inherently, just because such mix of names cannot be bad ;). If I will compose such set a lot of forgotten things should take their place.

Sounds good to me........2002-07-25
Bought this CD to calm and relax myself after a hard days work. CD seems like a great collection to me. It's got a lot of songs that I recognize and some that I don't. It does sooth me a bit after the the many stresses of everyday life.
I'm not really a classical music nut like "Frasier Crane" so I'm not sure how much merit I can bring to the table with this review. But I think it's great..!!!
Wonderful Selection.......2001-05-13
Some of the world's truly finest musicians perform some of the all time greatest and most loved musical masterpieces. The CD makes for easy and peaceful listening of an evening.

Great collections, with poor quality sound.......2003-01-09
I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.
There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.
It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.
I give 3 stars for this product.
The Greatest Collection Of Romantic Era Music.......2002-09-05
The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.
Somewhat lacking.......2001-03-28
(referring to the entire collection)
The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music. However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting. Some lively pieces are played too slowly, and nearly all of them without emotion, keeping the set out of reach from being included in a true classical collection. Despite all that, the sheer number and range of pieces (along with the low price) make this a collection well suited for the new classical listener.

Now that's talent.......2007-03-30
The Last EMP is one of the most talented emcees of this time. Deep with concepts, ability and versatility. This offering from him captures a large part of his potential. The Last EMP can carry an album himself if one only listens to the lyrics independent of production. He has skills like that. Song wise this album shows many some of the many different styles the Emp has in his aresenal, it could have been more cohesive but I hear the Emp is working on his second album and the production is closer the The EMP's lyrical ability, so watch out for album two!
The greatest album no one knows about? Probably........2006-10-20
The Last Emperor made his name on the Lyricists Lounge albums, an series of albums dedicated to hip-hop heads connected with the underground. He wasn't a prominent feature on these albums, hence there wasn't a whole lot of hype for his debut album. Working against Last Emp even more, he couldn't even get it out on Rawkus, where it'd have moved more units; he had to go with a very cheap label to publish and distribute his music for him. By the time Music, Magic, Myth was released, not only was it scarce in any store, but even some of the most dedicated hip-hop heads had no idea who this cat was.
Last Emp showed his brilliance on the Secret Wars saga, which can be found on the bonus disc of this album. The chosen few who did know this cat's skills were anxious to hear how well he'd do on a solo album; and thus, this masterpiece was given to us. But are there even more than a thousand people out there who've heard this album? It'd shock me. I'm shocked to see this album has the sixteen reviews it does on it, and also very pleased that this album, at the very least, reached some heads; because anyone who is a fan of hip-hop deserves to own this album.
It's musical perfection; from start to finish, nearly cracking in at an hour long, Last Emp doesn't let up. He is the most passionate emcee I've ever heard on the mic; if you thought Shakur's delivery was powerful, you haven't heard anything yet. His lyrics are leagues above most cats in the game, including some of the most revered lyricists; on a straight-up lyrics tip, I'd only put him behind Immortal Technique and the GZA. The thing is, unlike the aforementioned CD, who are politically charged(Tech), or throwing poisonous darts(GZA), Last Emp is the soft-spoken poet who spills his heart out onto his music. He drops knowledge, science, mathematics, whatever you want to call it, all over this release. He has the vocabulary of a college professor, and the heart of a warrior.
There are so many powerful cuts on here, it's hard to single any out; but tracks seven and eight are my absolute favorites. Track seven is One Life featuring the late Too Poetic; who was literally dying as he recorded this song. Too Poetic's words are enough to bring a tear to the eyes of even the most stubborn individual, as he retells the phsyical pain he's suffering with his intricate storytelling. Despite nothing being able to top Poetic's verse, Emp's is powerful in its own right, as he questions religion, and life after death like no other emcee can in his verse. Track eight is Meditate, and it's spine-tingling; the Buddhist monk hymms in the background create a very atmospheric piece of production, and Last Emperor drops verse after verse of dopeness.
The Last Emperor's debut(and unfortunately, only album at this point) is just as important as the Illmatics, Ready To Dies, and Reasonable Doubts of this world. If you can find this, do yourself a huge favor, and pick it up; i promise you won't regret it.
One verse says it all.......2006-09-28
This album is absolutely amazing but the third verse on the track "Karma" blew me away the first time I heard and still blows me away each time I hear it. I cannot belive someone wrote that verse and incorporated it into a hip hop song. If that verse alone does not make you feel like you made a great purchase then the rest of this well crafted album certainly well. I want to hear another album!
MUSIC, MAGIC, MYTH, IS NO MYTH OF MAGICAL MUSIC.......2006-01-09
THIS ALBUM IS COMPLETELY THOUGHT PROVOKING, FIRST RATE MUSIC AT IT'S FINEST, AND THE LEGEND HIMSELF IS BACK TO WHIP THE RAP SCENE BACK INTO THE SHAPE IT BELONGS IN. LAST EMPEROR GIVES PAUSE FOR THOUGHT WITHOUT THE TAUDY BRAINLESS DRIVLE LIKE TODAY'S CLONE RAPPERS, WHO APPARENTLY HAVE LESS ENTERTAINMENT VALUE THAN THE HALF HOUR OF INFOMERCIALS FROM THE "TIME LIFE- BEST OF THE 70'S COLLECTION" HAVE TO OFFER.
BUT, EMP KNOWS THAT. THAT IS WHY HE MADE AN ALBUM SO GOOD THAT PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY OVER $30.00 TO GET IT. WOULD YOU PAY THAT MUCH FOR A 50 CENT ALBUM? NO, I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD. YOU WOULD NEED SIXTY 50 CENT'S TO PAY FOR ONLY ONE EMP. AND RIGHTFULLY SO. LET'S VIEW LAST EMP'S ALBUM SHALL WE.

Movie music from the master.......2001-11-22
I enjoyed Sakamoto's soundtrack for WINGS OF HONNEAMISE and his composition for the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Then after hearing an interview with Sakamoto on "World Cafe with David Dye", I decided I wanted more. CINEMAGE is a nice sampling of his various soundtracks and convinced me to get more. His music is very melodic and fits well with each movie, yet each has his distinctive sound. Nice background music for a quiet Saturday afternoon.
totally moving.......2000-11-26
I bought this album because of the song "Forbidden Colours" from the movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence". This song alone worth more than the price. It is a perfect masterpiece: the music, the lyrics and sylvian's voice.. my heart just melt whenever I listen to it, yes, everytime. It's so powerful, try it yourself and you will feel it too... (The other famous orchestral tracks are also great... but they became extras to me)
A vexed effort, but valiant.......2000-05-12
Including some of his most renowned themes, CINEMAGE is a collection of works primarily composed to accompany visual events established on film. Known for his syncretism, particularly of East meets West, Sakamoto offers a unique, unabashed glimpse into his melodic universe, remaining one of the few film composers not submerged in the musical polyglot of the Hollywood scene.
Recorded live on tour in 1997, CINEMAGE boasts an unrehearsed, but convincing performance by the Orchestra. Conducted by Sakamoto, with Yutaka Sado, the recording occasionally glistens with the imaginative elements of the music's inception intact. The graceful `Little Buddha' and `The Last Emperor' both evoke a sense of Romanticism and tragedy. `Replica' glimpses into the more playful, jazz-like harmonies of Sakamoto's compositional style, as well as the ferocious 1992 Olympiad theme `El Mar Mediterrani' which is bold, and episodic in nature. The centerpiece of the album lies in `Forbidden Colours' the heart rendering theme of Nagisa Oshima's emotional 1983 film "MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE." Along with guest musicians David Torn, DJ Spooky, and David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto proves that his music has the tenacity to reach farther than the silver screen, and onto the concert stage.
beyond film music?.......2000-03-21
Sakamoto's global fame as a composer and musician may lead to expections of unmerited praise, but don't be mistaken; "Cinemage" is certainly a work that speaks for itself. Utilizing mainly the piano and orchestra, Sakamoto relives some of his paramounts as a film composer in this recording. His technique, interpretation, and composition is beyond doubt; music lovers will enjoy Sakamoto's firm understanding and presentation of such classical elements ranging from Vivaldi to Barber. However, it is observable that the music seems to lack a certain maturity, that which that makes compositions classics instead of another piano-and-bar piece. Sakamoto's phrasing is sometimes abrupt and premature, and perhaps that is to be attributed to the fact that film music will remain film music, lacking the coherence that traditional compositions emphasize. Highlights of the recording include "Forbidden Colours", featuring the most beautiful and emotional piano and vocal parts. "El Mar Mediterrani" borders on the fringe of classical and new age; its sometimes chaotic and erratic melodies are truly inspirational and make this track a gem. All in all, Sakamoto delivers a range of material with such sophistication that reasserts his genius and fame. "Cinemage" is certainly a recording that music lovers cannot afford to miss.
A new--and live--orchestral recording.......2000-03-03
Sony says: CINEMAGE consists of 'New recordings of Sakamoto's best-known music for film and television, including "Forbidden Colours" from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence with vocal by David Sylvian, the Oscar® winning theme from The Last Emperor, and "El Mar Mediterrani" composed for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Sakamoto on piano is accompanied by a large orchestra in these new arrangements of well-known themes.'
