wonderful partnership.......2007-06-21

The music of Vangelis really gave Anderson the dimensions he needed after initially leaving Yes. The collaboration should have lasted longer. Italian Song is a breath of bliss and one of Jon's career peaks. But missing is Deborah, another piece of magic from this team's Private Collection.

YUCK! But there is one great song.......2006-11-29

Take the rock group Yes... remove the awesome guitars, virtuous bass, bombastic drums, innovative keyboards, strong songwriting skills and group dynamic and what you have left is this.

Jon Anderson has a weird, high pitched voice that is fine when laid against the backdrop of Yes but on its own, it is a bit grating. The eccentric lyrics, that you do not pay much attention to because of the incredible virtuosity of the musicians, also sounds silly. THis is boring elevator music with lyrics.

However, "I'll find my way home" is a stunning and majestic masterpiece of sheer beauty. If a used cd is less than $8, the one song is worth the purchase.

Not what I expected.......2005-12-23

I really, really liked "Chariots of fire." I expected similar quality of music especially on a "Best of. . ." album. I like new age music, I like synthesized music, I like keyboards, but this album is really tepid. The "Italian Song" is not very Italian. Not like a Verdi or Puccini opera, not folk-like as "O Solo Mio," not like "Funiculi, Funicula," not even like the modern ballads that Josh Groban sings so beautifully in Italian. Only the title is Italian. It is bland and boring. It does not even do a good job of minimalism. Track 2 tries to be progressive Rock, but it fails just as the first track failed. Track 3 attempts a jazz sound. It has lots of good rhythm, and it gets better as it goes on, but the intro is cacophonous. The lyrics sound as if they were written by someone tripping out on drugs with some perseveration on previous religious training. The intro to track four sounds like a child found the synthesizer and said, "Let's see what this does." It is disjointed and unmusical and has nothing to do with the song once it begins. The actual song, "One More Time," is not too bad, although it gets very repetitive.

Track five is my favorite. Vangelis produces melodious sounds with the sythesizer. Jon matches the reflective sound with his voice, then it bursts into an energetic middle section, eventually returning to the slow, moody feeling of the beginning. I found this piece intriguing and wanted to know more. What is "Play Within Play?" Alas! There are no decent liner notes. "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" sounds like a sound track for a Dick Tracy movie. It clearly is a spoof of old gangster flicks. It is light-hearted and fun even though it is in a minor key. The music is okay, the sound effects add the spice that make this track interesting.

On track seven as I was listening to the vocals, I realized how much more romantic Kathie Lee Gifford sounded on the last album I reviewed. I thought I would give her a bad review, but her voice was beautiful and I had to objectively rate the album accordingly. Here I expected to rate the album highly and again, listening objectively, I have to alter my original intent. The vocals are not grating, but neither are they great. They are like the album as a whole, merely tepid.

Did I say track 5 was my favorite? Perhaps it should be track 8. "He is Sailing" has a really catchy beat. Here Vangelis approaches the sound that he demonstrated on "Chariots of Fire." The melody sings nicely, the rhythm moves you.

The same can be said of Track 9. As a compilation, tracks 5,8 and 9 work well together. The other tracks seem out of place. In fairness, a "Best of . . " album is not comprised of songs meant to flow well together as an actual album would. It is only designed to run through a list of songs by a person or group that are considered the most popular or most definitive. Still, one gets the feeling that perhaps the tracks should have been arranged in a different order.

Some individual tracks are good, but as a CD this leaves much to be desired. There simply are not enough really good tracks. If you are a Vangelis fan, I suspect you would do better to buy complete albums after having a listen and leave this "Best of Jon and Vangelis" on the shelf. It leaves you feeling shortchanged and the lack of decent liner notes adds to that feeling.

An almost excellent best of.......2004-06-06

The reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because I'm rating this album on how good of a best of it is. If I was rating it on the music alone it would easily get 5 stars. The reason I'm docking a star is because the saxaphone interlude in State of Independance was cut out, and some lines I loved to harmonize. Also, the intro to I Hear You Now was cut, as mentioned. But I didn't really like that song anyway.

Someone on the private collection review page said that people either "get" J&V or they don't. I totally aggree. Buy this album, and see if you "get" them or not.

Now, a little about the duo. For anyone used to Jon Anderson's voice on Yes, this will be of no surprise - except that the songs he's singing are not rock. They're quiet, beautiful, ornate and intricate songs, with plenty of echo. For anyone not used to his voice - prepare yourself for a shock! Personally I love it - but it's a matter of taste. His lyrics, as always, make little sense. They're used to enhance the music, in my opinion. I don't know as much about Vangelis...Greek, experimental synthesiser player, movie soundtracks, collaborations. He's a hard man to track down though... But he's a musical genius!

As a child I loved listening to my parents cassette tapes. This is how I came to love Jon and Vangelis. I must have rewound that tape 5 times when I first heard I'll Find My Way Home!

Then one night, I was sitting in the car with the engine turned off. One More Time came on, and I heard every beautiful sound and musical "Vangelis touch". I was just learning music theory at the time, and I marvelled at how Vangelis could stick in the weirdest chord and resolve it perfectly, Jon Anderson's pure falsetto carrying the tune all the while.

The Friends of Mr Cairo - the full 11 and a half minute version - is an epic piece, especially in the second half. Despite being so short (for an epic) it is geniunely huge, with huge ideas, huge tunes, large sweeping melodies - it's great!

Ouside of This, one of the most beautiful J&V pieces I've ever heard, is an even more experimental song. The vocal range and lyrical expertise of Jon Anderson is stretched to the max.

The rest of the songs are nice, but The above are my favourites.

hope that helps! I recommend this to anyone - but if you don't like it don't complain. It's not for everyone, despite me recommending it to everyone. um...yeah.

Good Best Of Collection............2004-01-17

....but WHY ON EARTH did they edit out the 30 second begining of "I Hear You Now" ???? OH! I just Hate when they do things like that!!!

Otherwise....very satisfied.

Best of ~ Vangelis.......2005-04-22

This is an amazing 2002 compilation. I found it in the bargin bin in Loddekopinge at the local Maxi Ica. I was a bit suspicious since the prize was rediculousy low but I wanted to give it a try since Vangelis is a true master of electronic music. This compilation covers mainly his works from the 70's with one exception that being track number 9 which was released 1991. Vangelis work from the 70's is heavily influenced by the soft keyboard sound of the time and it sounds a bit like Jarré's work at the same time and a bit of a touch from Kraftwerk. Anyone that thinks that electronic is played by muisicans that could not handle "real" music will be in for a surprise as this kind of music is not for the novice but requires the same skills as for a classical piano player. Vangelis is truly an amazing artist, musician and composer. The book-let features a very nice photo of Vangelis playing and inside it has very to the point and well written story covering the artist and his music. This is a grand compilation for a very reasonable price.

what is this? sweet memories with the sappy love songs like rain and tears? where are the powerful legendary heavy bands such as Deep purple, led zeppelin, lynyrd skynyrd or the CREAM? Aphrodite S child did not belong to the classic rock bands.

Everyone have heard the sweet songs like Rain And Tears, I Want To Live, Spring Summer Winter And Fall. This CD gethers a few pieces of wonder. And those who are familiar with the Band, will miss the sweet Marie Jolie, witch bring us back nice moments from early teenage. In most of the pieces you can recognise in the backgroud, the firsts chords of what I would call the Vangelis Music, a singular atmosphere. And also the greek folk music in the voice os Demmis Roussos. Buy it, you will really love it.
