Planet Heart
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
Planet Heart promotes a psychological movement inward. Planet Heart is music that will conduct the listener inward and upward to a higher plane of consciousness. The listener is enveloped within three bodies: gross, subtle and causal. The gross body, also known as the physical body, requires gross food. The subtle body requires subtle food. The causal body requires causal food.
The sustenance of the gross physical body is food grown in the soil. We eat dust or the product of dust. The sustenance of the subtle body is ideas. The subtle body or the body of mentality is idealistic and ethereal, and thus feeds from the dust of ideas. The sustenance of the causal body is happiness or bliss. Imagine happiness as an unseen organ within your body. The music of Planet Heart is food for the causal body. This music is the dust of bliss.
Sound is the Light of Lights. It is the creative principle that advances through Kinetic agitation under the static polarized region. It pervades throughout all that is and all that is not. Nothing can exist without it. As composer and exegete, Samuel David Steiner has brought healing music, as he perceives it, from the Static Sphere. Music manifested from the Sanctum Sanctoru

Great Gig.......2007-04-04
The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).
CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.
Commander Cody at His Best.......2006-06-25
These are all of the Commader Cody songs that have made him a legend. Highly recomended for any one into Rock-a-billy or Texas Rock.
Should have been a double live..........2005-12-08
...And it almost was a double live...the commander wanted it that way, record company said no...what do record companies know? Not much, sadly, becuase there WAS a WHOLE LOT more music from this concert at the world-famous Armadillo World Headquarters...the rest of this concert can be found on one of three albums...Sleazy Roadside Stories, Bar Room Classics, or Texas Roadhouse Favorites...the third mentioned is hard to find, apperantly a UK only release. Sleazy Roadside Stories has two tracks missing from the other two, but any of those are good if you want the rest of the concert. This is a great album, it has, arguably, the BEST version of "Riot In Cell Block #9" ever recorded...was that July 27 1973 or 1963? Hmmmm Anyway, crank this one up, crack open a lone star, and drift away to 525 and 1/2 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX...in 1973, was there a better place to see the greatest progressive country band in history?
Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19
There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.
Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06
Following a third album that didn't shine as inventively as their first two, the Airmen returned with an absolutely brilliant document of all that their music meant. Recorded live at Austin, Texas' "World Armadillo Headquarters," the Airmen sound like the Buckaroos in their prime: relaxed, confident, and deadly across a wide variety of inter-related musical genres. They even cover Owens' "Crying Time," much to the crowd's delight.
The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."
The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."
This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

Great voice, pious, self-righteous, lyrics.......2002-03-05
Dick Gaughan is a wonderful singer. I bought this after hearing his Song for Ireland on a sampler. What an amazing voice! But these songs are so lame, so chock-full of mis-guided and pompous sensitivity, that listening to that voice mouthing these words is a classic case of cognitive dissonance. Games People Play works brilliantly...an astonishing performace that is worth one of these stars all by itself.
But Stand Up for Judas, in a world where religions are killing right now for religion, sounds breathtakingly silly (I admit, I'm a Christain, but turning your pal into the hated authorites to get him to act is hard to comprehend under any circumstances). And calling Reagan a broken-down actor is just dumb. People still wish Carter had won that election--geez, even I voted for him--but Carter and his thought were bad for this country.
Those who prefer a Socialist state are free to have them, but the voters who are voting with their feet are choosing America in overwhelming numbers. Dick Gaughan doesn't get it. And he seems angry that anyone would choose something so obviously decadent and foul.
ARGUABLY GAUGHAN'S BEST.......2001-05-08
This fine album from 1983 showcases Dick Gaughan's songwriting and political conscience, as well as some fine writing by others. A little more 'electric' than his earlier releases, the sound and arrangements should come as no surprise to those familiar with his fine, earlier work with the band Five Hand Reel (O that their work was available today on cd...!!!).
Every song on this cd is a strong one -- and this release, thanks to the good folks at Appleseed, contains two bonus tracks, including Leon Rosselson's wonderful tribute to the Diggers, 'World turned upside-down'. Also present here is another Rosselson classic, 'Stand up for Judas'. The title track sums up Gaughan's philosophy of song very nicely -- entertainment is all well and good, but these are songs to shake the listener's mind and soul, to make them think about their world and what they can do to make it a better place. The pairing of 'Prisoner 562'/'Song of choice' drives home the lesson of the evil that mankind is capable of, both by acting directly and by standing idly by, choosing to do nothing in its face. 'The father's song' is one of the most poignant expressions of a parent's wish for a better world for his child that I have ever heard. 'Think again' holds the stupidity of the cold war mentality up in society's face. And only Dick Gaughan could take Joe South's 60s anthem 'Games people play' and make it meaningful for the present-day listener.
This album can entertain, but it can also make you angry enough to ask yourself, 'What can I do...?'

The Scots guitarist, song interpreter, and sometimes-songwriter has succeeded in creating a fine album that is full of biting political insight, but which doesn't lack for romance, either. He is an active proponent for liberation in Scotland and around the world. Songs include Michael Martin Murphey's "Geronimo's Cadillac," Pete Seeger's anti-war tale "Waste Deep in the Big Muddy," and his own socialist manifesto, "No Cause for Alarm." The political high point is probably Brian McNeill's "No Gods and Precious Few Heroes," a powerful work about the real Scotland, delivered with just his voice and guitar. His guitar playing is not to be overlooked. On Richard Thompson's "52 Vincent Black Lightning" he takes the twisted love song and adds his own unique guitar sound to it, making the piece very much his own. A few songs have a stock rock band backing that does not detract from the strength of the singer and the song, but compared to his remarkably sensitive reiteration of "Ruby Tuesday" with just guitar and harp, the pop numbers pale. This is one of the more acoustic records Gaughan has made this decade, and a welcome addition to the collection. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Emotional power.......2004-08-10
Gaughan has been a cornerstone of my collection since I first heard the mesmerizing, traditional Scottish folk album, 'No More Forever' which is still my favourite work of his. His guitar playing here is nimble and deft, and that voice capable of such a range of emotion, up there with the greats. It's really something to say that his version of.'Vincent Black Lightning' is superior to its author's, Richard Thompson. And his take on'Ruby Tuesday' brings an entirely fresh resonance to bear on a song that had died in the 60s. There's not a weak thing on this CD. My quibble with the ratings is only that I prefer the aforementioned & his outings with his early group, Five Hand Reel, which are well worth looking for.
A must-have for any Dick Gaughan fan!.......1999-09-29
If I were stranded on a desert island with only my CD player, this is one of the CD's I would have to have with me. With everything from traditional ("Freedom Come All Ye") to rock ("No Cause for Alarm") to the Rolling Stones ("Ruby Tuesday"), Gaughan shines on this one! And for everyone, like me, who ever needed encouragement at a very low time in their life, "Sail On" is the one song you need to hear and pay heed to.

Pleasant but mediocre.......2002-01-03
I'm not sure what I expected from the now grown Aled Jones but I have to say that I was disaapointed by this album. The once exceptional treble voice has matured into a very pleasant but very mediocre tenor. The odd electic collection of songs belies a person with such backround and training. Still having said this, to be fair the album is at least pleasant easy listening.
He's still got it.......2001-06-09
I own and love many of Aled's renowned treble recordings, and was delighted to come across this recent album by the now young tenor and BBC broadcaster. I must say that "From the Heart" has become one of my favorite easy-listening choices, somewhat to my surprise. I find the collection of songs a bit disjointed (e.g., what's The Christmas Song doing next to a Beatles piece and Tears in Heaven?) - that's the only reason for the 4 stars - but Aled's gorgeous tenor voice is a straight 5.
He has an extremely even and smooth straight tone, save for a slight (and rather attractive, I think) vibrato flutter at the very end of certain lines which he has had since his soprano days. It is an unusual treat to hear such exquisite phrasing and control brought to pop standards (he puts me in mind of The King's Singers, a group in which I think he would fit marvelously). In these songs, you can literally hear the years of cathedral training; Aled has probably been studying singing since he could speak.
Among my favorites are I Found a Dream, Because, and Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. Be prepared - the sincerity and perfection with which the latter is delivered may actually draw your tears. Although it seems that Aled has not chosen to pursue the full-time classical performance career which would have been very open to him -- and one can rather understand his choice, after spending his entire childhood as a working professional -- I'm sure that many people the world over would welcome future releases from this exceptionally polished and unusually experienced young artist.
Its the voice............2001-05-09
I bought this album after hearing Aled Jones on BBC's Songs of Praise. He really does have a powerful voice. Nothing fancy - just a really clear, defined voice that is seemingly perfect. And the songs, although traditional, are a healthy mix of new, old, loved and uknown. Try it out - its the sort of CD where you can put it on while in a traffic jam, ...and relax.

Ghoultown couldn't put out a bad album if you held a 6 shooter to their collective temple. These guys consistently put out hard core gothabilly that could make you shiver in your velvet, here, gothy kids! I personally took a chance and bought the Album That Started It All, and this one is a gem!
Worst CD Ever.......2006-01-16
A local band that is just terrible. Needless to say it is bad. Some bands can at least crank one good song out but this is a prime example of music that is just plain wrong. Rent if you can but do not under any circumstances buy.
