I saw Jamie Cullum on a PBS special and was amazed by this young "20 something" man whom just captivated the audience with his class and hip style. Jamie takes "jazz, blues" to a new level, writing fresh new material showing that no style of music becomes extinct. Truly enjoyable!

This is the first Jamie Cullum Album, more focused in a Jazz Style, This cd has great Songs like High & Dry, Pointless Nostalgic, I want To Be a Popstar or his own version of Devil May Care.

All are Great Songs, big quality of sound, musicians, instruments and of course, The great voice of this artist, Jamie Cullum that everybody likes.

I actually heard Jamie in person this past summer at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Until then I must confess I was unfamiliar with his work. Jamie is a real talent, polished performer, with incredible energy and pianistic fluidity. This CD is an excellent entree to his style

Listening to this early Cullum recording gives you a timeline for the expression of his talents. You can discern his emerging style in several of the songs, but his youth and inexperience are glaring. The promise of more to come is certainly there, and there is no doubt that you are listening to an exceptional person. When you follow with Catching Tales, it is astounding to witness the explosion that has occurred in the intervening 4 years. I don't know where he will go from here, but this recording gives the listener an historical perspective on where Cullum has come from.

A terrific suite of small pieces suffused with melancholy underneath even the most upbeat melodies. This is a composer with whom I was unfamiliar until seeing a San Francisco Ballet piece choreographed to music from this CD. The program notes to BLUE ROSE which was a World Premiere in the 2006 season say in part:

"On the heels of his decision to create one new work for the 2006 Repertory Season, Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson launched into a second premiere for the Company, Blue Rose. After hearing composer Elena Kats-Chernin's CD Ragtime and Blue, Tomasson couldn't resist. "It's fun-it has a kind of joy to it," he says, and you don't doubt him for a minute-just talking about the music brings a smile to his face." Unfortunately the CD seems to be available only via a UK label but it's worth waiting for - I've had it spinning every evening in the two weeks since it arrived.

This CD is pretty good. It has some nice classical guitar music. I like disk #1 better than disk #2, but I guess that is just a personal preference.

In the Persian Folk Songs album, she sings the folk songs from the beautiful shores of Caspian sea; Gilan, Mazandaran, to the songs coming from the green peaks of the Kordestan mountains, from the pleasent music of the planes and mountains of Lorestan to the happy tunes of the sweet people of Shiraz and from the brave tribes of Boyer Ahmadi, to the pleasant sounds of the slopes of the proud Alborz mountains.

Persian Folk Music Revived.......2001-10-05

I was very lucky to come across this Album first in Los Angeles and then on Amazon.
For me the Album brought back memories of Iran, all its diverse cultures and its people, which even though far away, we can never be apart from.
I had heard bits and pieces of Persian Folk music as I grew up on Iran's National Radio on Friday mornings in Tehran. Those are days long gone. For me this album was a link to something, which has not been tangible to me for almost thirty years, My homeland.
The quality of the recording is superb. Both the Artist and the orchestra are exquisite.

This is the first CD I have from Maggie Sansone. I saw that she has several out. It is very melodic and rather traditional Celtic music; very enjoyable. I would definately purchase another of her CDs.

Compelling, mature and mysterious.......2004-01-02

This recording, subtitled "Celtic Explorations", is a masterpiece of understated intrigue. Ever changing, the moods and styles range from lilting, traditional Celtic and dreamy New Age to shimmering Persian taxims and innovative modern chamber music. Maggie Sansone's original compositions and arrangements are defined by her scintillating playing of the hammered dulcimer and supported by guest instrumentalists who provide gentle, multilayered accompaniments. Featured prominently is Bobby Read, an amazingly versatile musician who seems to play just about every wind, keyboard and percussion instrument under the sun! Also contributing are a host of other artists, many of whom appear as soloists or accompanists on other releases produced by Sansone under the label "Maggie's Music". They are: Al Petteway on guitar; multi-national fiddlers Bonnie Rideout (Scottish), Sara Nisenson (Irish) and Andrea Hoag (Swedish); flutist Aran Olwell; harper David Sheim; Debbie Hunter on viola da gamba; T.J. The hammered dulcimer is a perfect instrument. It's melodic in a percussive way, perfect for combining with other instruments. With the right musicians, the dulcimer rises from simple folk instrument into a highly expressive, extremely moving one. Maggie Sansone is a worthy musician who has developed a true feel for its capabilities. She wrings every ounce of emotion from it. In her hands, it not only dances, it swings. Her understanding plus her musicianship allows her not just to adapt traditional tunes but also to write pieces suited to it. A Traveler's Dream delves nicely into different cultures while retaining Celtic toots, with Sansone leading the way, assisted by the occasional addition of fiddle, guitar, percussion and more

Mystical Moods of Celtic music and more!.......2000-10-25

Maggie's sixth solo release and it exlores in innovative ways.. music from Ireland, Scoland, Sweden, Cape Breton and the Northumberland region of England. Also are Persian and sufi-influenced compositions by Sansone and sets celebrating the ancient Celtic holiday's of Samhain and Lughnasa. This album is one of the most innovative album featuring hammered dulcimer around with its multi-layer textures and layering of sometimes 3 hammered dulcimer sounds together, plus various tonal qualities are explored with different textures of mallets on the strings and use of other mallet struck instruments and along with complex origianal compositions more like tone poems that takes the listener on a mysterious journey. A visionary meeting of Celtic and world music influences.

A trip, not an adventure.......1999-07-02

Like Maggie Sansone's other recordings, this is tasteful, exquisitely performed, and a pleasure to listen to. The tunes span the Celtic world, and the arrangements enhance the qualities of the acoustic instruments rather than blurring them in an electronic mist. What seems to be missing is guts: the traveler doesn't actually take a journey (and return with blistered feet and a pack full of silk and incense), she just dreams about it! Or, to paraphrase the title of one of her other albums, she dances on the shore rather than diving into the waves. This is possibly my personal taste rather than anything actually "lacking" in the CD. But some tracks (such as the "Dervish" improvisation and the intriguing "Bear Dance") show hints that she's capable of considerably more original and passionate work, and I'd like to hear what would happen if she turned loose the Wild Woman side of her personality!

"Generations" is the original theme music composed to accompany "The Generations Music and Photography Exhibit," which featured historical family photographs taken in the 1920's by George Skaroulis' grandfather,Theo Patronis. Patronis was born in Greece in 1897 and came to the US in 1913. With his camera, Patronis documented the family history as well as the old and new worlds he called home. The photography exhibit opened in Patmos, Greece in July 2000, and then had its premiere in the US in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2001. Pianist George Skaroulis' music captures an appreciation of life's simplest moments, as do the photographs in the 8-page booklet that accompanies the CD. For the most part, the music is quiet and peaceful. Some of the tracks have additional instrumentation, but the album is gentle and serene, and some of the pieces are breathtaking in their simple elegance and heartfelt emotion.

"Hopes and Dreams" opens the CD with piano and oboe in an almost wistful duet that sets the tone of the album. "Photographia" is a beautiful piece with a simple melody that mirrors the poignance of the photos. As the title implies, "Nostalgia" is a reflective, bittersweet piece, remembering times gone by. The title track begins with a variation on Chopin's Prelude in Cm, and evolves into a wonderfully flowing piece that includes flute and strings along with piano; this is one of my favorites on this album - very soulful and emotional. "Dreams of Children" captures a gentle innocence along with a moving forward. "Se Ymnumen" is another favorite - a very minor piece full of passion. It was inspired by a liturgical piece heard often in Greek Orthodox church services. (It was also on Skaroulis' debut CD, "Homeland.") "Melodia" is a simple, compelling piece that is reflective and very poignant.

A self-taught pianist, George Skaroulis doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles in his music, and none are needed. The messages are clear and straightforward, and Skaroulis is one of the more expressive pianists on the contemporary scene. Another exceptional album by an exceptional artist. Very highly recommended!

The most beautiful, calming music..........2001-11-28

This music is sooooooo beautiful. What a lovely surprise to discover this musician! I received a brochure with some Greek tapes, videos and CDs in the mail and came across the name of George Skaroulis. I had never heard of him, but decided to try amazon.com to listen to some of the selections... ahhhhhhh...
as I listened to each selection, my breathing began to slow down and my body began to relax...and a peaceful feeling began to take root. I am SOOOO grateful for this beautiful music.

Also.. his "Season Traditions" CD is one of THE most beautiful albums... Its music is sooo calming and beautiful that you can truly listen to it ALL YEAR LONG. Put this CD on and curl up with a good book by the fire... ah.. a little bit of heaven.

Peaceful Escape.......2000-08-31

I purchased this CD after I skimmed every track for about 10 seconds each. I play this cd almost everyday. George's rendition of Shenandoah evokes different deep emotions out of me everytime I listen to him. All of the other songs bring such peace and is a great relaxer or backround music while I'm at work. Hopes and Dreams, Castelli, My New Friend, and Dreams of Children are my favorites. I think I might have to buy another copy of this cd before I wear out my current one. And a bonus, George is a great guy.

Good intro to a few artists.......2006-06-13

This is one of my favorite musette compilations. It has a couple of very good Emile Vacher songs (Tant que... and Radieuse...).

Plus it has a song many people will recognize: Les Patineurs. Most of the other selections are good, too.

If you're looking for a good introduction to bal-musette music, this is a good bet.

The only downside is that it relies heavily on a few artists, while ignoring others (Gus Viseur, Colombo, etc).
