Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
The Best Band that you've never heard of!.......2007-01-09
This group is SO good! Their music has a variety of the usual influences: rock, country, and folk. Their songwriting is excellent; they have great harmonies, intelligent lyrics, good voices (all take turns with lead and harmony vocals,) and all three members make excellent contributions to the group. Basically, in their native Canada, this is a supergroup! All three of these guys have great solo careers, but still make time to record with the band, too.
I know that since this CD is an import, you can't listen to clips of this on Amazon. However, you should be able to listen to clips of their CDs "Bark" and "Kings of Love" here. ("BARK" is an excellent introduction and "Kings of Love" is another great one,) but you may just have to take my word on them.
If you like John Hiatt, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson then you will FALL IN LOVE with this album!!!!

Customer Reviews:
I was frolicking, now I'm rollicking!.......2007-07-03
Were your socks blown off by their album "Let's Frolic?" Just wait 'til you hear this one!
At the end of the song "Ole Slewfoot" you clearly hear someone in the recording studio say, "You wanna play this again just 'cause it's fun to play?" This simple question summarizes the whole CD. It's full of studio sessions, outtakes, and material that wasn't used on their previous album -- I wish that other artists' albums were as consistently good as this CD of "throwaway material."
If you're already a fan of BARK, you will instantly play this over and over again because it's that catchy and good! My favorite songs here are "Down by the Henry Moore," "Ole Slewfoot," and "Don't Blame Your Blues on Me." (If you're curious about the group in general, check out my review for "Let's Frolic.")

Sliding in alongside her rock sisters Tori Amos and Aimee Mann, Kathy Fisher's edgy, sadly beautiful vocals and alt-rock prowess lay the foundation for True North, her major-label debut. --Michael Wells
Customer Reviews:
once in a while, a perfect album appears.......2007-05-31
I came to Fisher the band the way many people did, loving the Toyota commercial and finding them on the web. At a guess though I do love Tori Amos, I'm not a "typical" Fisher fan, being of the 60's folk era and raised on the clear voices of Baez and Collins and the stories of Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Still, nothing quite prepared me for the terrific insights of Miseryland and the honesty of Human, and that haunting beautiful voice. This record was put together wonderfully, and should be listened to as a suite! Some of the songs need repeated listening. Oh, it is so good to find great lyrics and sweetness and honesty again. Oh, please reissue this as a CD, I'd love to give it to all my friends!!!!
Beautiful, sensitive, intelligent.......2007-03-08
The high harmonies & dark melody on "Never Say Never" actually put me in flight the first time I heard it. I've played selections from this cd for several friends & it has always received glowing, passionate queries, "What is this so I can go buy it??"
"Breakable" is revelational. What a completely different perspective, but so true.
While there are divas with more training or fancier voices, Fisher is extremely fulfilling because her songwriting is deep, melodic, intelligent, & perfectly suited for her voice. This was a very, very satisfying CD & I highly recommend it to you connoiseurs who know the difference between original recordings & a POS mp3.
Every Song a Love Song.......2007-03-04
Many will come to find this CD, as I did, because of the song "I Will Love You," a gorgeous and moving ballad that can break your heart every time you hear it. There is no question that this is a beautiful song, and I still love hearing it again here, but the real treat of 'True North' is the wide variety of good music on it.
The common thread through each song is Kathy Fisher's voice: sultry, powerful, and always striking just the right tone for the music. Comparisons to Sarah McLachlan or Poe or Lori Carson spring to mind almost immediately, but all these comparisons fail because ultimately, Fisher's voice is a unique addition to the world of female vocalists. It is a rare beauty that can swing from soft to sensuous to strident in moments.
The songs themselves are as unique as the voice. Showcasing heartfelt and honest lyrics ("It's all right if you fall, you are human after all, but it hurts when you land on my life.") with strong musical accompaniment (sometimes a full band, sometimes just a piano), each song is its own a story, and each one merits multiple hearings.
There is an honesty on 'True North', not just in the lyrics but in how they are sung, in how the songs express themselves as a whole. Simply put: a beautiful voice and great music. It doesn't get much better than this!
Sarah McClachlan Fans Come and Enjoy.......2006-06-08
OK, so Fisher isn't exactly like Sarah, but as a big fan of hers and someone who always has to wait such a long time for good music, finding Fisher was a godsend and has filled my CD player for months. I actually picked up this CD (and a Beth Orton one) thanks to a friend of mine who said I would love the mixture of lilting piano melodies and a deep beautiful voice. The first song, 'Hello, It's Me,' starts the album off with an emphatic bang, as FIsher welcomes us to her musical world and talents. I love this album. It's pretty steady all the way through so you can listen to it over and over again.
solid potential .......2005-03-15
This singer's voice is very recognizable because she's done a number of jingles for for commercials. It's a very sultry and deeper voice. She could have a career as a torch singer if she wanted to, but I don't think that she does. As a group they shift in a more adult contemporary direction, than idiosyncratic singer/songwriter and that kind of fits. The music is still compelling and entertaining I'm just not sure that this is the exact type of music they should be making. It just doesn't sound completely natural, but it's still good. That built a name for themselves on the online download music site trend. Now that it's over they're still releasing albums, but not for a major label. If they roll through town check them out, they are bound to be a strong live band because of her voice alone.

They formed in 1992 by a Mexican-Canadian and began as a Celtic Pop outfit. After a while they added other musical elements to the mix. Today they slide effortlessly from Americana Country to Latin Groove to Stax influenced Soul tunes or to a ragin Celtic Stomp.
This latest venture is just about the best so BUY IT!!!!!

His 19th Album.......2004-12-17
126.5 minutes with all the extras)
Now if you ask me, and a lot of devotees of compilation music anthology type deals do on a semi-regular basis, then this here monster collection of Bruce Cockburn works is the best to date... the best compilation, that is.
Before you commence to thinking that the profit hungry marketers have done it to us again and just thrown in a bunch of cuts we already purchased plus a couple of new tracks to make us pay for the entire package of songs and, thus, milk us for sales of songs we already purchased... I got news for you. There are indeed two songs that were new to this here CD when it come out, "Waiting for a Miracle" and "Stolen Land." However, there are a few more songs that are slightly different than other versions and worth taking a listen to. For example, the version of "Mama Just Wants to Barrelhouse All Night Long" on this CD is taken from the film 'Rumours of Glory' and ain't like any you ever heard before. From that same film they took the song "Rumours of Glory" and present it here on this CD. "Fascist Architecture" and "The Trouble with Normal" are versions that were, at the time, previously unreleased and somewhat different than other versions.
There are eleven tracks more on the Canadian version, ain't none of them rare or unknown for the Bruce Cockburn aficionado, but if you're going to spend the money and you want better value for dollar... then I'd pony up and fork over enough for the Canadian version. On the other hand, if you're Canadian, since the loonie don't really buy much seeing as how it is so weak, you might have to fork over even more if you want this (or any other ) CD. We folk in Chesterfield County call the Canadian loonie the "Northern Peso."
This here CD is a good way to jump in and get to know the music real quick if you never heard Bruce before. If you got six or seven albums already and are looking to buy more... I wouldn't start here unless you take careful stock of the songs on offer and make sure the majority of them are new to you. Otherwise, buy a different album that will expose you to a total collection of cuts you ain't never heard before. For all you folk out there who absolutely must have everything Bruce Cockburn has ever released, then make an effort to get this one. I write that because the cuts taken from the film soundtrack are nice deviations from what we all grew to love on the original albums and you will sleep better knowing you have another hole in your collection plugged up.
"Accidentally" heard.......2001-09-18
I am a native of Zambia in Central Africa. In 1992 as I drove going to visit my girl friend in a little town called Ndola I witnessed a terrible accident involving the then deputy minister of health (who is now the minister of finance). After helping the victims I remained on the accident scene to collect all that belonged to the minister. I picked his laptop, tapes etc among others. One of the cassettes was for Bruce Cockburn. I had never heard Bruce before and out of curiosity I decided to play the tape in my car. I really enjoyed it and since then I have become a Bruce fan. Bruce is a must for anyone who loves the accoustic guitar. I returned what I had gathered from the car to the minister and when I look back I tell myself I accidentally bumped into Bruce Cockburn for sure.
Great artist.......2001-01-08
A great introduction to a truly excellent artist. Bruce is for me the canadian Bob Dylan (for the lyrics) and Lou Reed (for the music). This Double-CD is a very good and very large overview of his work, with good sound quality. Vocals and music are fine, sometimes a bit depressing, sometimes uplifting. Its mostly for the lyrics you listen to him, which make you think. Also his good vocals and very good band playing adds to a great listen. So if you like songs, where the message is the biggest part of it, this artist is for you.
Terrific Overview of the First Half of Cockburn's Career.......2000-12-15
Canada's Bruce Cockburn has been recording for thirty years now. This 1987 2-CD compilation samples every album from Cockburn's self-titled debut in 1970 through 1985's World of Wonders, plus two previously unavailable songs recorded specifically for this set--"Stolen Land" and "Waiting for a Miracle." Although Cockburn flirted with Top 40 success with "Wondering Where the Lions Are" in 1980--it reached No. 21--Cockburn has unfortunately remained essentially a cult figure in the United States.
I bought this on vinyl when it first came out just to get the two new songs. When I began converting to CDs a few years ago, I got this collection because it had eleven more tracks than the vinyl edition. If you're familiar with Cockburn only since 1984's Stealing Fire (which garnered some MTV play with "If I Had a Rocket Launcher"), this is a cost-effective way to catch up on the first half of this eclectic singer-songwriter's career. Cockburn is a masterful guitar player (both acoustic and electric) and a prolific songwriter (he wrote all of the songs here) utitilizing a variety of music styles often with overtly political lyrics--especially on his later work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
truely a miracle.......2000-07-05
Anyone who is interested in the Canadian legend MUST own this anthology. Its a wonderful history of the artist from the classic early folk ballads, to more rockin' songs from one who can hold his own against anyone. It is good place to start, and a great cd for any collection. I highly recommend it!

Great relatively unknown (in U.S.) band.......2007-06-01
The first song I downloaded from eMusic was Saints at the Gates and I was really happy with it, it was very upbeat and likable. Then, for no real reason, I downloaded the album and with the exception of "Theresa," I enjoy it tremendously. I think that maybe because it is reminiscent of 80's stuff I am more comfortable with it and feel like I know it right off the bat.

A Little Something Lost Between Stage Performance And This Recording.......2006-08-30
The Golden Dogs second full-length album,
Big Eye Little Eye, was released by
True North Records today. After seeing them live for the first time when they opened for
Cracker last month, I was looking forward to listening to this CD. On stage, I liked almost all of their songs instantly and they are
just amazing to watch, but there seems to be a little something lost between the stage performance and this recording. The result is that a few of the tracks end up not being as ear-catching as I expected. But don't stop reading yet because there are a few exceptionally sweet spots spread throughout this album that make it worth returning to for many more listens.
The Golden Dogs have an overall sound like some other current Canadian bands and so, although they may not want to hear this, they share some similarities with both
The Arcade Fire and
Sloan. And although they may not list
Super Furry Animals as one of their influences,
Dave Azzolini's vocal style reminds me a little of
Gruff Rhys. Mix all of that with a small dose of early
Police, and you have the unique style of the Dogs.
Many of the tracks on the CD have a lo-fi sound that I wasn't expecting. Lo-fi recordings work well for bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, but after hearing
The Golden Dogs live I think this recording would have benefited from a little more fidelity. The album starts out with a two-star effort called
Dynamo that contains a repetitive guitar-riff and a fairly bland vocal melody. But I'm focusing on the wrong thing here; there is no point talking about the few songs that are
not noteworthy because more than half of the tracks are really good alternative pop/rock songs that grew on me quickly.
The second track on the CD,
Never Meant Any Harm, starts of with a bit of 80's pop synth which is not something that I would normally enjoy. But the vocals and guitar are nicely done and the song builds up over the three minutes to a point that I'm drawn in. I'm able to get past my fear of the 80's sound because there's enough depth later in the song to keep me more than satisfied. Another really strong track on the album is appropriately named
Strong. I love the reserved beginning, the amazing play between
Azzolini's lead vocals and
Jessica Grassia's backing vocals, as well as the final 60 seconds that is filled with a driving beat and wah-pedal guitar. The last song that needs to be singled out and praised is a cover of a song by
Paul McCartney and Wings called
1985 that obviously has a strong 1970's rock feel to it with loads of interesting changes, classic guitar solos, and a keyboard part that will have you hooked in under a minute. All three of these songs, including the cover, have formidable commercial promise. Other great efforts are
Runouttaluck,
Life On The Line, and
Force of Nature.
The more I listen to this album, the more I get addicted to Azzolini's guitar and Grassia's vocals. The other band members fill in the music well, and I don't want to downplay their importance, but it is the strength of Azzolini and Gassia working together that is the real allure. I could
see a connection between them on stage, and I can hear it on this album. I've added all tracks from this CD to my permanent iTunes collection and put 7 of the songs into my current playlists. When I listen to these songs, what I really want to do is get out and see
The Golden Dogs live again. My recommendation is to first buy the CD to hear their songs, then get yourself out to one of their shows. Check
The Golden Dogs Gig Page for details on where you can catch them live. Maybe I'll see you there.

Album Description
First U. S. Release! BARK marks the highly anticipated U.S. debut of the Juno Award-winning Canadian group Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson formed the band as a tribute to the much respected but little known Willie P. Bennett in late 1995. In 1996 their debut album High or Hurtin' was released to critical acclaim in Canada. All three continued their successful solo careers garnering numerous individual awards and nominations. The chemistry which first brought the trio together drew them back in 1999, resulting in the Juno Award-winning double album Kings of Love. The album's unique fusion of rock, roots, folk, blues and country influences established the band as favorites of both music fans and critics alike. Their newest effort finds the trio maturing musically, featuring some of the best material that these three talented songwriters have ever put to disc. Recorded in the winter of 2003, BARK captures the raw energy of the band, from the honky tonk twang of "Swinging from the Chains of Love," to the world weariness of "Stoned," to the unabashed and infectious rock 'n' roll of "Had Enough of You Today." BARK features 12 original songs, as well as covers of Willie P. Bennett's "Willie's Diamond Joe" and Bruce Cockburn's "Tie Me at the Crossroads." Featured musicians include Richard Bell (the Band), Gary Craig (Anne Murray, Jann Arden) and John Dymond (Bruce Cockburn, Natalie MacMaster). BARK mixes the many strengths of these talented artists to forge a uniquely entertaining and powerful record.

Customer Reviews:
The best band that you have never heard!!.......2004-06-05
Blackie & The Rodeo Kings may very well be the most under rated
band in the world. They certainly are the most under rated band in the Americana genre. Even though all three members are stars in their own right in their native Canada, there is most definitely no clash of egos from this group of Canucks. To the contrary, there is an undeniable chemistry and kinship among them that, in my opinion, makes them one of the mot talented trios of all time (I can attest to that having the opportunity
to recently meet them, and see them in concert, great guys).
In addition, their group of backing musicians including, Gary Craig, & Richard Bell, are superb. Their most recent effort,
Bark is a tasty mix of rockabilly, blues, country, & roots rock.
Their previous effort, Kings of Love, is more of the same. If you are fan of The Band, John Hiatt, Whiskeytown (before Ryan's ego exploded), etc., be sure to check these guys out.
Cool roots-rock, country and blues from Canada.......2004-04-23
Well, here's a puzzle: if it's Canadian, is it still Americana? Far North Americana, maybe? Sub-Arcticana? Anyway, this disc opens with "Swinging From The Chains Of Love," a tasty, upbeat country-billy tune, then it zips into more chunky-sounding roots-rockish territory, with a bouncy, agile slide guitar at the heart of the mix, bringing to mind old stuff by David Lindley and Ry Cooder. Mostly this is pretty darn catchy, although they do slip into some sluggish tropes, as with the forced profundity of "Heaven Knows Your Name," "Willie's Diamond Joe," and a couple of other tunes. If you like these guys, also try checking out solo albums by singer-guitarist Colin Linden.
Album of the year 2003.......2004-01-03
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings was CKUA's number one album of the year for 2003 and it was my number one album too. This roots rock endeavor for Steven Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson has a great full sound for a mere three piece band. But if you are lucky enough to hear them do the same songs unplugged, the music stands up beautifully without all the effects and thunder.
The lyrics are wicked and insightful. "I got a feeling stinging like a new tatoo black across my mind" -- (from Water Or Gasoline by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings). Moods range from rockabilly to ballads to psychadelic rock. BARK is gonna jump up and bite you.
If you only buy one album in the next while, this is the one to get.

Album Description
Since he was a pre-teen, Grammy nominated and Juno Award winner Colin Linden has been a fan and a practitioner of the country blues. After waiting over 30 years, he finally felt ready to make a CD of the music he's loved all his life. Featuring both original compositions written by Linden over the course of his career and inspired versions of tunes written by some of the greats of the acoustic blues, on Easin' Back To Tennessee, Linden captures the spirit of his early blues heroes, but his approach transcends mimicry. Voice and guitar are placed front and centre, while subtle accompaniment from the ace rhythm section of Larry Taylor (Canned Heat, Tom Waits) and Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits) graces a handful of the tunes. From the Delta infused title track to the joyous "You Can't Get That Stuff No More" and the mournful "Champ," the listener is transported to the Deep South. Other standout tracks include "Broke Down Ending," "Tears Come Rolling Down" and "Nowhere To Go." Easin' Back To Tennessee is a must have for any blues fan. Standard Jewel Case.
Customer Reviews:
Contagious Joy.......2007-03-18
From the title of Colin Linden's new CD, you might think he was trying his hand at country music. However, the title track is a classic blues by Sleepy John Estes. With Larry Taylor on bass and Stephen Hodges on drums, Linden adopts a largely acoustic traditional approach such as on 1930's bluesman Bo Carter's (Mississippi Sheiks) tune "Go Back Old Devil." On Blind Willie McTell's "Broke Down Engine" Linden looses a slow mournful howl with Hodges heavy on the brushes. By track 4, Linden pens an original tune, "Nowhere to Go," that's given very similar treatment with fast picking blues guitar. One of my favorite tracks on the set is "A True Friend Won't Let You Drown" that Linden writes with Gary Nicholson. Its slower tempo fits with the emotionally powerful lyric, "When I see my brother suffer, lost in the mighty storm; And I know the light is fading and the dark is raging on, I want to reach out and save him from the water pouring down." Linden mines T-Bone Burnett's CD "The True False Identity" and casts "There Would Be Hell to Pay" into a blues ballad about love & violence. Linden covers 1920s/30s slide guitar blues master Tampa Red's "You Can't Get That Stuff No More" that is an upbeat blues shuffle. Linden's own instrumental "Paramount" is a sweet acoustic guitar blues with plenty bounce per ounce. Linden makes a Charley Jordan tune, "Keep It Clean," with a fast acoustic blues guitar style, sound very similar to some of Chris Smither's early blues covers filled with contagious joy. Son House's "Dry Spell Blues" offers more slide guitar pyrotechnics. Blind Willie Johnson's "Trouble Will Soon Be Over" is a stately blues spiritual. The last track is labeled with a French Louisiana word "lagniappe" that means a small gift and is the emotional weeper "Tears Come Rolling Down," "She kissed me goodnight, but Lord I know she meant goodbye." This track is by senior bluesman Henry Townsend that's sung by Townsend on Kenny Wayne Shepard's newest release. On Canada's True North label, "Easin' Back to Tennessee" is an excellent traditional acoustic blues set by this master musician. Enjoy!
