When the announcement came that George Strait was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, there were those who thought it was premature. After all, Strait is only in his early 50s, and with 53 #1s, more than anyone else in Nashville history, he is still an active working artist, not the sort who sits back on a million-acre ranch remembering when. But one spin through It Just Comes Natural and it's obvious why the quiet Texan deserved his induction now. He simply has no mainstream peer, for either his consistency on the charts or his continuing to raise the bar with his confident, nuanced performance. Here, on an album recorded in Key West, Strait sounds even more relaxed than usual, as if he took more time to live with the songs--15 in all--before he recorded them. Throughout, he amply demonstrates his ability to choose material that pushes the country genre beyond its core themes of God, family, and patriotism while still staying traditional. So many of the songs catch one off guard, either because of their different subject matter (the way the lyric of "Come on Joe" gradually tells us the dead never really leave the living) or in their sophisticated approach to a routine topic (the head-spinning recognition of an old flame in Bruce Robison's "Wrapped"). Then there's the artistry with which producer Tony Brown's handpicked studio cats elevate an already great song even higher (a sizzling cover of Guy Clark's folk/honky-tonk/Western swing classic "Texas Cookin'"). For the first time, Strait recorded NATURAL in a new setting - Jimmy Buffett's Shrimpboat Studio in Key West, Florida, where Strait and Buffett recorded "Sea of Heartbreak," from Buffett's LICENSE TO CHILL album, a few years ago. "I thought it might be a good idea to try something different," says Strait. "You couldn't tell that we cut this down there, there's no island flavor at all, but we just had a blast doing it. The studio is probably the smallest I've ever been in, with the musicians all crammed back in a little room - but we got a great sound, and it's such a relaxing atmosphere. I think I'll probably go back again." Recorded once again with Strait's frequent co-producer, Tony Brown, the sounds on the album reflect Strait's characteristic blend of traditional country structures shot through with a healthy dose of honky-tonk spirit and Western swing. Moods range from the introspective "Come On, Joe," in which a man's late wife tells him to be strong and move ahead with his life, to the raucous "Texas Cookin'," which is about just what it sounds like. An array of Nashville's finest songwriters contributed to NATURAL, including Bill Anderson, Bruce Robison, Lee Roy Parnell, and Guy Clark. "This album's got fifteen songs, which is more songs than I've ever put on a record before," says George Strait. "But I thought they were all so good, there wasn't one song on here that I would have felt right about leaving off. I really think we came up with one of the best albums I've ever done." The album in question, titled IT JUST COMES NATURAL, is being released in a year that marks Strait's 25th anniversary as a recording artist, and coincides with the announcement that he is the most recent addition to the Country Music Hall of Fame. It's also coming out alongside the jaw-dropping news that George Strait has become the all-time leader for Number One Country singles, as the album's opening track, "Give It Away," recently became his 53rd song to top the charts.

You cannot go wrong with George Strait. I have not ever disliked one of his songs or his voice. I saw him in concerts (more than once) and he is every bit as good every single time.
Looking at him is a really sight for sore eyes. Listening to him is great as well.
This is the really country boy from Texas. Geroge Strait is the real thing. (Unlike the other George who claims to be from Texas, but lives on D.C.)

Love this whole CD, I may be a late comer for being a George Strait fan, this being the first CD I have bought by him (due to the 3 amazing songs I have been hearing on radio) but is a fan now anyway. I recommend it foir anyone who wants to discover George Strait.

I have been a George Strait fan from the beginning - I own every recording and have to say that he never lets you down. This album is really one of my favorites - the songs are all excellent.

This is a Must Have.......2005-08-04

About 20 years ago, I saw the VHS version of Natural States playing on TV's in a local Radio Shack. They used it for TV sales, but they did not sale the tape. They only had one copy, and I had no idea where to buy a copy at the time - it was not available in the local music stores, no one had Internet back then. I really liked the scenes and the music, and just had to have a copy. I knew the manager of the store quite well, since I went in there rather often (I was an electronics buff and majoring in electrical engineering). Least I say more.

Anyhow, since then, I have bought the Natural States CD and the Natural States DVD, and a couple other CD's by Lanz and/or Speer. The Natural States music is as good today as it was twenty years ago. It never ages. Get this CD or DVD (if you want the scenery), sit back, relax, and enjoy all the music. You won't regret it. A beautiful piece of work. I'm not into most easy listening, instrumental music like you hear on NPB radio stations. Lanz's music is a step above that.

Early progressive sound.......2005-06-25

This release has been out for 20 years now, and many of the tracks sound dated. However, Paul Speer's two tracks (Allegro/984 and Lento/985) are a great example of early progressive electronic music and sound just as great today as they did in '85. Worth buying just for those two tracks.

Relaxing, soothing, and beautiful!.......2003-04-21

I couldnt believe how relaxing the music made me feel. The instrumental music is very well played and at the same time, it makes me relax quickly. This is real music for the soul. When I read the title of the track, "Behind the Waterfall", I thought it may have real sounds of the waterfall but it didnt. Still even without the sounds of water, the music smoothens everything out.

When I was a kid going to EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World, I remember hearing "Behind the Waterfall" in Future World in the background. It is amazing how sometimes you hear something years ago and then you hear again for the first time. I heard it for the first time 5 years ago and it is still something I will never forget. "Behind the Waterfall" is a piece that will always be part of my childhood. Definitely worth picking up.

I also had this on a cassette which was played so much it wore out! Now that I have a CD player I had to get Natural States on CD.

Pretty good, actually........2006-06-15

I think that the previous reviewer - C. Cross "Music Lover" - failed to realize that this album came out well before Franz Ferdinand's first album (Sept.'03). It's true that they were also influenced by Gang of Four, and you can definitely hear it. Their sound isn't exceptional or incredibly unique and the lead singer's voice is rather lackluster. However, it IS a good album for this genre of music. The songs are eclectic and the melodies are pleasing. This album will be liked by people who enjoy The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes, The Killers, Constantines, Idlewild or any of the other indie-revival bands.

The Natural History's "Beat Beat Heartbeat" isn't a great album, but you'll probably like it. The singer is relatively good, although I can picture some people not liking him. Musically the album sounds like indie rock that uses Gang Of Four/Franz Ferdinand inspired angular guitar sounds. It's kind've creative, but not entirely new - they definitely have their own sound, though. The production is prettyThe lyrics tend to be impossible to make out, so I can't really comment there. Every song here is good, but it lacks a standout track ("Watch This House" comes close). It's not a great album, but chances are if you liked Franz Ferdinand's album then you'll like this one, too. Recommended!

The glory of The Natural History is brevity. Spoon is one of the most lauded bands of the new millennium for being minimalists; they've been topped. Now, minimalism is this sense, is not cutting out inessential parts, rather, it's never constructing a song beyond the point where any part becomes an accessory. Spoon vs. Guided By Voices mixed with the wanna-hate-'em NYC hipterism of the Strokes. Too many bands make too long albums, and that might result in a biased review for Beat Beat Heartbeat. But heck, sometimes you need a record that gits in, and gits out. "Facts Are," "Watch This House" and "Right Hand" are a trifecta.

I saw the Natural History play in NYC and fell in love, and now finally they have a long player! I went to their record release party and bought it immediatley, and I haven't stopped listening to it. If you like the Kinks, or even the Hives, you will love the Natural History!!!

Good, but lacks.......2007-04-06

There's no real problems with the album, and each song is distinct, so it's overall a good mixtape. However, no songs really stand out as incredible, none you find yourself singing along to in the car. If you want some unique and good rap to listen ot in the background, this is it, as it beats 90% other albums out there.

Martha's best!!!!!!.......2006-03-30

These two albums are by far the best of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. It is so refreshing to finally see them on CD. 'Natural Resources' is far better than 'Black Magic.' The best song I feel on the album is 'The Hurt is Over,' which would have skyrocketed to No.1 had it been released. Another standing out is 'Easily Persuaded,' which Reeves has said she thought could have been a No.1. Too bad Diana Ross squatted Berry Gordy. It's sad to say that sex gets you farther than talent, that of which Ross had very little of, if none at all. I also love the track 'Something,' which is filled soul, and 'Didn't We' which shows Martha can sing standards like the best of 'em. In fact ...all of the tracks not used on the album, were issued on the 'Spellbound: Lost & Found' 2-CD set. Those tracks are 'Talking 'Bout Love,' 'Build Your Love on a Strong Foundation,' 'Earthquake [stereo mix],' and 'There's Love in the World,' just to name a few. "Black Magic,' boasted two fine tracks, the highly collected 'No One There,' now a cult classic, and a very emotional 'Benjamin.'

Two early seventies albums.......2003-05-25

By the time these albums were recorded, Martha and the Vandellas were no longer the attraction they had been in the sixties, but the albums are still worth a listen by committed Motown fans.

The first album, Natural resources, was released in 1970. Only one single was released in America (I should be proud, which failed to chart) and no single was released in Britain. I should be proud is an anti-Vietnam song, which Martha delivers with real feeling. There are some covers here, including Something (Beatles), Put a little love in your heart (Jackie De Shannon) and Everybody's talking (Harry Nilsson), but most of the songs are original, though none are as impressive as I should be proud.

The second album, Black magic, was released in 1972. The cover of Something re-appeared on that album but is not duplicated here as no changes were made to it. The American singles from this album were Bless you, In and out of my life and I want you back. The British singles were Bless you and No one there. None of these singles climbed very high and some failed to chart at all. The only cover here is Anyone who had a heart.

Three bonus tracks include I gotta let you go, another minor hit, and an alternative version of People got to be free.

While this set could hardly be described as essential, it is enjoyable.

Worth The Wait.......2002-12-14

This compilation includes two of my favorite albums I purchased 30 years ago as a teenager. I don't think there's a bad track on either album with many of the songs favorites of mine until today. I'm sure many fans of early Motown have never heard these songs as neither album sold well at the time. I was thrilled to finally get remastered versions of two albums I wore out years ago.

They Saved the Best for Last.......2002-06-21

After criminally neglecting Martha Reeves in his obssessive quest to make Diana Ross the greatest star who ever lived, Berry Gordy Jr. began having second thoughts. In "Natural Resources" the Vandellas were allowed to move beyond albums of random tracks to something a little more ambitious mixing Motown originals with important material from outside the company and the orchestrators were given the go-ahead to be experimental and imaginative. "Natural Resources" glows with this freedom for the group, as does the cover which frees them from evening gowns and girl groupiness and lands the trio squarely in the middle of the back to nature movement. The album is terrific start to finish (the harmonies on "Something" are something!) and Martha finally is allowed to show she can do more than be a Vandella, that she can do ballads, showtype tunes, whatever, but the release went barely noticed as Motown was frying other fish. "Black Magic," with the best cover the Vandellas ever got, was strictly the result of Martha's own enterprise. The company had moved to L.A. and left her behind in Detroit but, again, had second thoughts. The idea was to put her on the new MoWest label out of L.A. working with the Jackson Five's producers the Corporation. That project never got completed, but some of the tracks ended up on this album. Beyond that, Martha got attention from George Gordy, resulting in one of her greatest records, "In and Out of My Life;" Ashford and Simpson for "Tear It on Down" and somehow got the gorgeous ballad "No One There," which opened the album and should have been a #1 single but--guess what--never got out AS a single in the U.S. Martha herself found some of the tracks at Motown and managed to get herself recorded with them and from this total botched mess comes surprisingly a beautiful piece of work. "Benjamin" is particularly noteworthy, showing Martha way, way beyond her shout days to being a thoughtful, deep singing actress. Meanwhile, Motown, mysterious as usual, repeated "Something" from the previous album while leaving off two amazing tracks, "Baby Don't Leave Me" and the followup to "In and Out of My Life," "I Won't Be Fooled The Way I Was Before." They appeared 30 years later. This album (originally to have been titled "Black Lace") got zip promotion and was hard to find. But together on C.D. these two albums represent a revelation--here is a truly great singer truly ignored by the record company she helped raise to success and, despite it all, she ends up triumphant. And doing better than ever now, thank you very much.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas always had a loyal cult following in Britain, so it's not surprising that Motown UK has finally reissued all their original albums as twofers in CD format. The good news is that they're all given the royal treatment (similar to the Supremes reissue), with annotated track listings, bonus tracks including alternative takes, glorious colour pictures on the covers and booklets and above all. great audio quality from digital remastering. The not-so-good news is that the albums themselves are of variable qaulity and not always essential to all but hardcore fans. The best of the 3 later releases is to my ears "Natural Resources/Black Magic", the weakest and least essential being "Riding High/Sugar & Spice". "Dance Party/Watchout" is worth buying if only for the dance set.

Released in the early 70s when the group was considered to have passed its sell by date, "Natural Resources/Black Magic" contained surprisingly some of the most accomplished and mature work Martha ever did with Motown. By then, the music scene had changed and the practice of loosely throwing together a bunch of familiar covers for an album release was considered passe for artistes who wanted to be taken seriously. So, with these two albums, Motown tried to upgrade the group's image a bit by getting them to record more contemporary material. The results were mixed. But vocally, Martha was in peak form. She never sounded better. On gems like "I Should Be Proud", she lets rip with a new confidence, allowing her gorgeous voice to soar and her passionate vibrato to convey emotions that must have registered on the richter scale. Her phrasing on some of her earlier recordings could be sloppy occasionally, but by the early 70s, she had tightened up professionally and was hitting the sweet spot with deadly accuracy.

The release of "Natural Resource" went virtually unnoticed. It yielded no hits. But even with its fair share of fillers, it was memorable for the half dozen songs that genuinely worked and showcased Martha's growing prowess as a vocalist. Aside from the devastating "I Should Be Proud" - a high watermark of the group's latter day work with Motown - Martha also experimented with jazz and come up with the goods on Jimmy Webb's "Didn't We" and a searing performance on "Love, Guess Who". Another particular highlight for me was the raunchy "Easily Persuaded" featuring some of the most impressive and soulful singing Martha ever did. Unfortunately, their covers of the Beatles ("Something"), Nilsson ("Everybody's Talking"), Jackie de Shannon ("Put A Little Love In Your Heart") and the Rascals ("People Got To Be Free"), though respectable, didn't work so well, reflecting Motown's own A & R limitations.

Nevertheless, the group went out in style with "Black Magic", which like its predecessor, wasn't perfect but delivered some truly good stuff. By 1972, the Jackson 5 was Motown's priority act, so Martha & the girls benefited from the spillover effect. "Bless You", written and produced by The Corporation, was their most catchy number in a long while and a modest sized Top 40 hit for them. Their cover of the Jacksons' "I Want You Back" was also different and interesting. But the piece de resistance was "Benjamin", an emotional ballad which showed off Martha's vocal dexterity to great effect. There was also Ashford & Simpson's "Tear It On Down", which once again distinguished Martha's choices from Diana's when they were picking from the same songbook. Martha always went for the heavier, grittier, though less tuneful stuff. The non-album single "I Gotta Let You Go" was a good bonus track.

"Natural Resources/Black Magic" is my own personal favourite and the most satisfying of the 3 later twofers.

Fair Skye is a gorgeous record meant entirely for healing, meditation, and yoga. It is so relaxing, yet overflowing with introspective music and lyrics. Much of Fair Skye is sung in Lisbeth Scott's native language, Armenian, a luscious, soft language which lends to the quiet passion of this beautiful release.

Love: The word "love" repeated over and over. You would think it would get annoying, but it doesn't. It's a very good intro. 3/5

Water: Started with fluid piano and later joined by other beautiful instrumentals, this is absolutely transporting. So amazing. 6/5

Home: Instrumental with a Celtic feel, totally and completely amazing. Makes your heart go wild. 5/5

Fair Skye: Also joined by a Celtic sound, Lisbeth's voice finds its place in this as well. Beautiful and moving. "Take me to the sun, and wrap me round the crescent moon, and teach me to be the one." 5/5

JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME.......2005-03-15

Remember the first time you heard "HooDoo Man Blues" by Junior Wells? Or maybe the first Butterfield album? Howzabout getting your head cleaned out by the Clash? I may be an old poop, but, to me, most everything these days sounds homogenized and prefabricated. This stuff is raw and unfiltered. It's like being onstage with a guitar master who, as one critic put it, is "the angriest player on earth." Sometimes it's crisp and clean, and the next minute it's fuzzed out of an old, shredded Fender amp. It's funky, country, screaming, rocking... there's even something that sonds like reggae. I can't get it out of my head. Stop me before I play it again!!!
