It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
delightful experience.......2007-07-04
this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!
Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20
I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.
Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23
Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.
Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.
Excelent!!!.......2006-01-15
One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)
One of the Best !.......2005-12-06
This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

Album Description
For Lisbeth Scott, her recent Cd "Fair Skye" is a departure from the norm. Well known in the Pop/New Age world for her previous and stunning release "Dove", and for her work on Windham Hill's "State of Grace for Paul Schwartz, Lisbeth takes a different turn with the music on "Fair Skye", creating a collection of pieces meant for healing, rejuvenation and a peaceful escape to one's inner landscape. Suitable for use with yoga and meditaiton, this music truly soothes the soul. The music on "Fair Skye" was created originally for the Sacred Lens recording "Healing Light" as accompaniment to the magical and physically healing guided imagery of Dr. Jan Berlin, and is now being released on its own. Turning to her Armenian roots, much of the text on "Fair Skye" is written and sung in Armenian, a lush and passionate language that lends itself to the spiritual nature of this release. For lisbeth "Fair Skye" represents her first journey into the world that combines both healing and music, her two greatest passions. Using the rich cello stylings of Nathn Barr, the intuitive and emotional fiddle playing Gave Witcher, and the lyrically organic flute work of Darryn Songbird, Lisbeth builds a beautiful tapestry of sound, the foundation of which is her own work on piano, guitar, harmonium, and of course, voice. "Fair Skye" is the perfect welcome to the dreamy, sensuous, and super-natural world of this truly unique artist.
Customer Reviews:
Fair Skye.......2005-03-30
Fair Skye is a gorgeous record meant entirely for healing, meditation, and yoga. It is so relaxing, yet overflowing with introspective music and lyrics. Much of Fair Skye is sung in Lisbeth Scott's native language, Armenian, a luscious, soft language which lends to the quiet passion of this beautiful release.
Love: The word "love" repeated over and over. You would think it would get annoying, but it doesn't. It's a very good intro. 3/5
Looysuh: Absolutely gorgeous. Ethereal, but with quiet strength. Pure, raw, wild beauty. "Beneath a golden sky, come with open heart..." 7/5
Flow: This is mostly instrumental, best for meditation. Very, very pretty. 4/5
Water: Started with fluid piano and later joined by other beautiful instrumentals, this is absolutely transporting. So amazing. 6/5
The Light: Fragile and soaring, and so pretty. "Fear not, children of the light..." 5/5
Home: Instrumental with a Celtic feel, totally and completely amazing. Makes your heart go wild. 5/5
Fair Skye: Also joined by a Celtic sound, Lisbeth's voice finds its place in this as well. Beautiful and moving. "Take me to the sun, and wrap me round the crescent moon, and teach me to be the one." 5/5

Specially remastered reissue with new artwork. The English prog legends 1993 album for the Red Hot Records label. Strongly reminiscent of their classic albums for Island in the '70s, the band's Tom Newman both engineered the recording & co-produced it. Ni
Customer Reviews:
No, thank you (a retread)........2005-12-29
I dunno about this album. I've got everything Jade Warrior did in the '70's, and this just sounds like a forced, uninspired return to their glory days (the drum machine is horrible). It leaves a bad taste in my mouth....it's almost like a parody of their Island material. I have to force myself to listen to it to write this (not a good sign). If I was gonna be more diplomatic, I think I enjoy this one more during the mellow bits, but it's nothing they didn't do MUCH better earlier on albums like Floating World and Kites. It seems like they were adhering too closely to a New Age aesthetic. Just look at the song titles...."Evocation"...."Timeless Journey"......."Night Of The Shamen"? Cliche.
And by the way, for the guy (girl?) who was asking if the lyric "And it's alright, sitting in firelight" was Jade Warrior, yes it is, and it's the first song on Last Autumn's Dream (my favorite JD album), "A Winter's Tale".
3 & 1/2 really.......2003-01-25
This is the second weakest link of all Jade Warrior albums ever released. True, it is well performed. however Jon must have had a contractual obligation to put this album out. Breathing The Storm is a superior post Tony Duhig release, both in writing and in arrangement. To be fair, this CD's flow on a happier note from track to track. The arranging is simular to something like The Way of the Sun, though the songs are less intense and fairly floaty. I think it would appeal to the new age crowd more so.
Buy everything released by these guys........1999-12-28
I was turned onto Jade Warrior in the mid 70s with the first album, 'Released.' Subsequently I bought the next album 'Last Autumn's Dream' (where the lyrics in the above review come from). Both rock, but have a strong jazz influence. That is about as much as anybody can describe their style. Since then, I have bought every one of their albums, which are rare and often hard to find. Distant Echoes is more jazzy then the earlier releases, as is most of their music after the very early days. It reminds me of Horizon, which I have only seen once, on a used cassette, which of course I bought. I do agree with the other reviewer that it is also reminiscent of Voice of the Sun, but I find it much smoother. DE has many of the trademark JW sounds: Floating, ethereal, passages; Sharp crescendoes; Bitchin' grooves; An exotic feel; Outrageous guitar playing (although not by founding member David Duhig, R.I.P.); Lush texturing,; Multi-dimensional flut-playing; etc. Need more? Listen. Never the same, always good.
Is this the band I am seeking.......1999-08-30
I am trying to find the song titles from these albums, I am looking for one song in particular by a group of this name, I do not know which album it is on. The chorus goes "And its allright, sitting in firelight, making the room bright, keeping us warm. And its so good, smeeling that pine wood, burning like pine should, glowing like corn." Is this chorus in any of the songs by this group? I have an album titled Floating World by the same group but do not see it listed here. Please help if you can, Thank you
WONDERFUL! Non-traditional instrumental & arrangements........1999-04-30
The only bad thing about this CD is that it ends! For the long time Jade Warrior fans, "Distant Echos" is reminiscent of "Way Of The Sun" in some ways . . . completely unique in others. For the new JW fan, prepare to be dazzled, titilated and amazed! From the teaser opening with clanging swords in "Evocation" to the methodic pounding of the drums in "Spirits Of The Water," one is taken effortlessly to places in the mind not nornally visited . . . the vocals are mostly female and are very well coordinated . . . no real words are sung, only well executed hi-pitched notes of exceptional tonal quality . . . this is perhaps most notable in the song "Snake Goddess," as the mental images conjured are so vivid they defy my decribing them here! The various saxophones, bass clarinet & flugel horn are almost unrecognizable as these instruments normally sound! Suffice it to say that, for a short time, I find myself in another world when this CD is on . . . I almost don't want to come back . . . and if I had a choice . . . maybe I wouldn't . . . From the liner notes: "About three and a half million years ago three hominoids were heading north. Walking side by side they skirted an active volcano leaving their footprints in the ash. Who made these ancient marks now turned to stone? We cannot imagine their dreams and beliefs any more than they could imagine ours. Whatever we have was once theirs. Wherever we are has been their hunting ground or sacred place. When we poison the soil or dam the rivers we bury their spirits deeper. As we follow these footprints we must tread carefully lest we trample on their dreams these distant echos of ourselves."

Album Description
The brilliant progressive rock pioneers, Jade Warrior are renowned for their musical style. Distant Echoes features Tom Newman, who worked with Mike Oldfield on Tubular Bells 1 and 2, Jon Field (flutes, EWI, congas), Colin Henson (guitars) and Dave Sturt (Cipher on fretless bass). The theme of the album focuses on footprints made by 3 hominids, three and a half million years ago in the volcanic ash. Thoughts must go to who made these marks now turned to stone, and what their dreams and beliefs must have been. This recording will carefully take us through the mystery so these ancient people become distant echoes of ourselves.
Distant Echoes was the band's most recent album from the 1990s which never got the distribution it deserved. Now, specially mastered for CD with brand new artwork, this is a truly atmospheric album, which will appeal to both Ambient and Progressive Rock fans alike.
