Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.

An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06

I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).

As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.

If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.

It's not That bad..........2004-06-14

It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!

A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.

There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.

Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02

One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.

It's Roger Bobo, what more can be said. This is one of the finest albums of tuba music recorded by one the world's greatest tuba players. You're doing a disservice to yourself by not owning this.

This is Yizhak Schotten's fifth CD on Crystal Records. He has been called "one of America's finest string players" by STRAD Magazine. Schotten is formerly principal viola of the Houston and Cincinnati Symphonies, and a member of the Boston Symphony. He is one of the most respected violists in the world. He now teaches at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This is one of the only available recordings of the beautiful Suite by Vaughan Williams, and is the only recording of the Variations by Michael Colgrass.

Excuse me?.......2006-08-23

I'm sorry.. but I have to chuckle after reading these reviews. Serious trumpet players know David Hickman and his capabilities on the instrument, and, to be blunt, any comments that suggest that Hickman is "all technique" would be simply laughed at. He is a world-renowned performer and teacher who has done groundbreaking work with the Summit Brass and St. Louis Brass Quintet, not to mention on his numerous solo albums. Also, I suggest you look at the roster of his students at Arizona State University and write down some of the names. You'll see them again when they are successful orchestral players, chamber musicians, or solo artists.

Attacking the quality of Hickman's tone is pretty silly, anyway. If you've ever recorded an instrumental performance before, you know what I mean. Microphone placement and the acoustic quality of the venue (and many other things) make huge differences in how the recording will sound. It's not a good sound/bad sound issue; everyone's sound is different. Additionally, sound engineering technology today can make an 6th grader who started playing trumpet yesterday sound like Wynton Marsalis.

I apologize for not really reviewing the album (which is fantastic) here. Trumpeters, brass players, and all musicians would be doing themselves a favor to listen carefully to this album. Some fabulous and important trumpet repertoire being performed by world-class musicians.

Good Technique, Tone needs some work.......2005-10-21

For all trumpet players, we all know that tone production is what we always strive for. Producing an amazing tone...that is a great accomplishment.

Hickman obviously is a good trumpet player but I don't think he's anywhere near the top trumpet players. His tone is very heavy, and loses liveliness. When you hear him playing the 16ths and 32nds, his tone seems to turn a bit feeble and the sound IS NOT CONCENTRATED....each note is not clear enough

If you want to know what I mean, listen to Hakan Hardenberger. He has got a very focused tone and a beautiful tone at that.

Also, Maurice Andre has incredible tone and technique, but a different style from Hardenberger. Andre's playing may sound different too since he prefers to use French trumpets.

Hickman is okay, but...........2005-09-20

For a REAL trumpet player, search for Amanda Pepping's newest CD. She is truly amazing.

Trumpet Student Must-have.......2000-10-04

Serious high school and college trumpet players will be well served by owning this album. It contains several pieces with which you will spend a great deal of time during your studies, and gives you a clear, precise, and very musical account of them. The Kennan, Stevens, and Dello Joio are probably the most often performed works, but the other works on this album make a strong case for more inclusion on recitals as well.

David Hickman is an excellent player who makes every phrase and articulation clear to the listener. I don't advocate trying to make one's performane a carbon copy of Hickman's, but this CD is an excellent model from which to work, and the number of pieces contained on the album make it a good buy for anyone who is interested, and particularly those who plan to study seriously, the trumpet.

Sumptuous English Horn.......2002-11-27

One of the premier English horn players combines with outstanding instrumentalists such as percussion, strings and winds to provide a masterpiece eclectic demonstration of the rich, syrupty, sumptuous sounds of this double-reed.

Hove interacts with classic guitar and flute on great chasing rythmatic piece by Mario Castenuovo-Tedesco, followed by magnificent percussion and english horn piece by William Kraft.

You'll find yourself mesmorized and pleased with the delightful talent and magic of this recording. The Gerhard Samuel piece with two violins, cello and Hove is just exquisite and full of passionate playing.

One of Halpern's best.......2006-08-02

This is one of the best of Steven Halpern's best releases. Although the music themes and melodies are repeated on many of his other songs/albums, this one has always been my favorite for relaxation.

By the sounds of it this is a cool CD and a must get for any Bishonen fan! I mean look at the cover!

Very Good.......2004-05-11

VERY nice, al lot better than OST1. The highlights of the CD are Kumikyouko Chi no Ryu, Crystal, and Requiem. A good CD if you are a fan of the show, but I would even reccomend it to people who haven't seen the show.

This cd is great.......2004-02-29

I love this cd and I play it often. The music is simply amazing.
The first soundtrack had mostly "fighting" songs, whereas this one has calmer songs and more songs with lyrics. This cd also has songs that were not played during the anime series, such as 'Strength' and 'Crystal' (which is sung by Kamui's Japanese voice actor). Also, 'Suite (Dragons of Earth)' is on this cd and I like it more than 'Suite (Dragons of Heaven)' on the first soundtrack. With 'Suite (Dragons of Heaven)', I think it was a generalization of the characters, and did not play a melody for every seperate one of them. 'Suite (Dragons of Earth)' has a melody for each of the Seven Angels in an 8 minute song.
'Last Battle' is a great song which was only played once in the series, and not even in it's entirety. I find that very unfortunate, but it's another reason to buy this.
Last but not least, 'Crystal', sung by Kenichi Suzumura, is the final song on this soundtrack. I really wish that this song was played at the end of the series, however, since it ends with a sense of finality and is sung from Kamui's point of view. Oh, well. ^_^
What don't I like about this cd?
I don't really think they needed to put eX Dream and Secret Sorrow's TV edits on this cd. Not a big deal, though.
This is my favorite anime soundtrack that I own, and hopefully it will be yours, too!

How can anyone not love the music to X! Everything is worth it and it's perfect for any mood! Give this to anyone who loves X, or just loves the background music to movies and shows. Or get it for yourself, there's nothing wrong with that ^.~

A great introduction to brass-focused musicology. Playing works from a variety of composers from around the world and from different centuries, this showcase informs the listener of the composer's background and of the composer's intent. There are danceable selections, as well as those that make you think - interactive listening!

excellent recording of tomasi, and other works.......1999-05-19

a good mix of original and arranged work, very well performed. both wagner arrangements are particularly thoughtfully performed, with some excellent bass tbn. highlights in gotterdammerung.

the highlight of this disc is the tomasi 'fanfares liturgiques', afaik the only recording of this piece on CD. a stunning piece, the only way you can ruin it is to play it badly, which is easy to do. millar don't. some of the solo work (tbn in 2nd movement) is a little lighter than i would like, but that's not a fault, just a clash of opinions.
