EXQUISITE ! DELIGHTFUL !.......2006-01-22

What a wonderful collection of excellently performed and acoustically marvelous music -- rousing, contemplative, romantic, cheery - some of which were the long-remembered and not-often-heard-now favorite songs of my childhood and youth.

Make sure you read the enclosure that is tucked away into the front cover of this CD -- written in 3 languages, it proides little-known informatin about some of these wonderful tunes and their composers, and the illustrations throught the booklet are also a very nice touch.

Listening to this CD can be an intoxicating experience - what delightful selections all on one CD! From Gershwin to Gould, from Anderson to Sousa and more - a lovely Broadway tune (from Carousel), and the old familiar Arkansas Traveler as well, (and even a little barking and whistling on "The Whistler and His Dog"!) this eclectic collection of pieces was artfully and unforgettably performed, much to my great enjoyment. Although this was the first time I ever heard the New London Orchestra perform, you can be sure that now I will look for other recordings of theirs. I also plan to buy another copy so I can play it in my cubicle (quietly when at work, but LOUDER when I am by myself -- hee hee!!).

What more can I say? I love this CD with its remarkable collection of songs!!!

Good for all collections.......2000-12-09

Well, here is an English orchestra recording pieces that some American orchestra should have done long ago. This is music to have fun with and much to my delight was a piece that I have only heard on a 10 inch LP. That is Sym 5 1/2 by Don Gillis. This is one of the best light pieces written in the 20th Century by an American, but sadly little performed. Buy it just for the Gillis piece and consider all the others as frosting on the cake. Take a break from Wagner and Glass and get this one and the three CD's of British Light Music. Just enjoy. Aloha..

A Disc that is a good time all by itself!.......1999-05-17

This recording is the kind that some American "Pops" Orchestras should be making. Most of these light classics are ones that the Boston Pops have recorded before, but I don't think have been done as well as Mr. Corp and the New London Orch., have done them. This disc is a real treat and I hope just the first of many. We as Americans need to rediscover our musical works.

An excellent compilation of light American classics.......1998-12-09

British composers are well known for writing for the "Proms" concerts that feature light symphonic fare. There is much less American music in the same vein as Eric Coates, Edward German and Ronald Quilter, but conductor Ronald Corp has unearthed some real treasures on this disc of mostly short, light pieces. Amazon's listing doesn't include two of the best selections on the disc, Richard Rogers' Carousel Waltz and Don Gillis entertaining Symphony 5 1/2, subtitled "Symphony for Fun." It's a real crowd pleaser, and the fine sound on the recording is a good match for the entertaining repertoire.

lovely.......2004-08-29

Being an opera fan, I'm often disappointed by cross-over albums. I agree with one the of the other reviews that mentions Upshaw are being more successful in this type of repertoire. But Murphy is quite lovely. It was nice to hear a few pieces I was unfamiliar with like "The French Song" and "Times Like This"... and I'm a sucker for "Come to my Garden" (even though I REALLY hated the boy soprano!). Overall, a very pleasant disc - perhaps not too deep on interpretation - but beautifully sung.

Lovely, But Bland.......2003-03-14

I've often enjoyed hearing Heidi Grant Murphy at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her crystal-clear soprano is truly beautiful, light and delicate, yet solid enough to handle Strauss and Mozart. Similar singers, most notably Dawn Upshaw, have triumphed in the musical theater repertory, so why not isn't this disc more successful? First of all, Ms. Grant isn't particularly successful as an actress. While some of the songs (most notably "I Have to Tell You") are beautifully realized, most are simply sung, with very little thought as to their meaning for the "character." In recordings a singer has to paint a larger picture, given the absence of sets, costumes, dialogue etc. Perhaps if we could see Grant's face, we'd know what she were feeling; but, of course, we can't. And as the musical director has advised Ms. Murphy to sing everything on the downbeat, the chances of her actually expressing some emotion are slim to none. Additionaly, I find the arrangements to be either unimaginative or intrusive. I will say that I absolutely love the selection of songs here. "Times Like This" is one of my favorite theater songs, as is "New Words." And what a pleasure to see an album of this sort with selections from "She Loves Me" and "Fanny," one not weighted down with the obligatory Sondheim and Lloyd Weber. All in all, this is a pleasant, lovely disc, one which I don't think you'll be sorry to have. But it doesn't compare to Upshaw's Rodgers & Hart CD, Terfel's Alan Jay Lerner disc, or Te Kanawa's Irving Berlin collection, which had the good fortune to be arranged by Jonathan Tunick.

Bright and lovely.......2003-01-31

This is a CD you don't want to miss. An addition to your special collection of all time favorites. Miss Grant Murphy has a voice that is a pure delight of pleasure; a clear and lyricly treat to the senses. Her Choice of music is different and blends well from selection to selection. Her arrangement of The French Song and (Vanilla) Ice Cream is bright and underlined with wonderful humor. Miss Grant Murphy's rendition of If I Were A Bell is just that...a bell...clear and bright.

Dos partes bien diferenciadas: la regular y la buena........2003-10-26

Es una lastima que este disco no haya salido todo lo redondo que podria, por culpa de contar con una orquesta que cumple con discreccion, la SINFONICA DE CASTILLA Y LEON, que no aporta absolutamente nada a las dos oberturas que interpreta ('Barbero de Sevilla y 'La Traviata'), ni a las arias y duos que acompaña; tambien por culpa de MAX BRAGADO DARMAN, un director que por momentos ofrece tempos excesivamente rapidos que perjudican tanto a los cantantes, que tienen dificultad para seguirlo, como a la intimidad dramatica de las obras.
Tras la obertura del 'Barbero de Sevilla' que abre el disco nos encontramos a una AINHOA ARTETA nada comoda en 'Una voce poco fa', un aria que no es de su repertorio. Poco mejoran las cosas en el dúo de la misma obra con Croft, pero su version de 'Dove sono' de 'Las Bodas de Figaro' es muy interesante, asi como el aria de 'Carrillon' que cierra el cd. En el amplio duo de 'La Traviata' que aparece en la mitad del cd ella, al igual que Croft, se encuentra mas comoda en la segunda mitad del duo.
DWAYNE CROFT comienza el disco cantando con mucho brio la cavatina de entrada de Figaro en 'El Barbero de Sevilla', con extraordinaria comicidad, al igual que en el duo siguiente de la misma obra. Peca Croft de frio en el duo de 'La Traviata', pero vuelve a mejorar y a llegar al nivel notable para la Muerte de Posa, de "Don Carlo" de Verdi y para el 'Sueño imposible', de 'El hombre de la Mancha' de Leigh.
En definitiva, un disco con algunos momentos de calidad, pero con fallos faciles de corregir. Que lastima.
