The tale of a mother who poses as her son's estranged father in letters, yet eventually has to enlist a stranger to play the role, director Shona Auerbach's intimate indie became a film festival perennial. Given the movie's tearjerker tendencies, its musical score becomes an even more crucial component of its deft, if relatively non-manipulative dramaturgy. Young composer Alex Heffes more than rises to the occasion, providing a delicate score fueled by spare, elegant piano and emotionally-longing string arrangements. Heffes work here mines the same intimately scaled, soulfully resonant vein as Rachel Portman's Oscar-nominated music for Lasse Hallstrom's Ciderhouse Rules and Chocolat, a skillful musical tack that's openly emotional, yet seldom cloying. The contributions of modern rockers Clarksville (the buoyant "Everyone Will Have Their Day" and more intimate ballad "Reprise") and singer-songwriters Obi and Jesse Harris organically mesh with Heffes' score in a way that's all to rare in an era where pop songs often contribute little more than marketing shuck to film projects. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
My Dear, Dear Frankie.......2007-08-06
I enjoy discovering music from around the world and often find that film soundtracks can offer a convenient intro. From the first scene in Dear Frankie, I was completely drawn in by the delicate balancing of narration and the haunting musical score.
Uhhh... It's Ok..........2007-05-01
I really loved the movie and especially little Frankie. There where three songs that just stuck in my head for weeks, so I bought the CD... unfortunatly out of the three songs, only one was on the CD... I was alittle dissapointed but overall it is a good CD. I really like Jesse Harris. He is the best on the whole CD.
Key songs are missing.......2007-02-21
After watching "Dear Frankie" on cable several times, I decided to buy it and the soundtrack album. I did not read the detailed list of songs before buying. Although the soundtrack is good for what it is, I was disappointed that the song "Delicate" by Damien Rice was not included. Nor was the song about the "white horse" that was sung twice during the movie, once by Lizzie and once by the club singer. It would have been nice also to have the "Macarena" song which was in the movie.
Nice mix of score and soundtrack.......2007-02-07
This album is nice because it has all the score music along with all the other music played in the movie on one CD. The "Dear Frankie Main Title" is especially nice to have. I bought this CD for my sister for Christmas, but now the whole family wants to listen to it. I would recommend it for anyone that liked the movie!
Beautiful, sensitive, sad and hopeful. .......2007-01-21
I stumbled upon this quiet little movie and feel like I've discovered a wonderful jewel. I was immediately enamored by the soundtrack and worked hard to purchase it right away. The music along with a few dialogue excerpts communicate much of the emotion and power of the movie. There's one song that was, regrettably, not on the soundtrack but I recommend be added to the CD or your collection: Damien Rice, "Delicate" from the "O" album. The music communicates such a sense of loss and longing while maintaining just enough of a glimmer of hope that you end up feeling alright.
It's a wonderful soundtrack and definitely worth the purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Broadway Divas.......2007-01-22
Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.
Love the choices.......2006-08-11
This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.
coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15
The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.
Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03
OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.
Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.
Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

Customer Reviews:
Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31
The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.
Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09
I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.
Great Collection.......2001-12-25
Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!
Exceptional.......2001-11-30
I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!
A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29
To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection of beautifully sung arias and songs.......2000-12-05
I am a newcomer to Yvonne Kenny's singing. Her performance at the Olympic Games in Sydney (at which she sang the Olympic Hymn) certainly left an impression on me. I was struck by the richness of voice, and this recital disk shows that quality off to great effect.
At this point in her career, Kenny's voice is not flashy; there are no coloratura fireworks or even high C's. What there is however, is someone who sings with clarity, charm, and ultimately with beauty. Kenny, like a great actor with the words, lets the music do the "talking" and proves an elegant and impassioned conduit for the composer whose work she is interpreting.
Hers is a mature voice, an intelligent voice perfect for Mozart and Strauss, the former of whom is represented here. On the disk she excels in the arias by Mozart, Purcell, and Handel. She also dispaches with class the songs of Gilbert/Sullivan and Cole Porter (in truly disarming fashion in the latter case). There is a elegance to her singing that is rare, but she does not sacrifice passion or committment. She comes across as a consumate musician above all.
On the technical side of things: Her diction is pristine. Enough said. She has one of the most beautiful middle registers of any soprano active today, and her vibrato is fresh and lively without being obtrusive. To be picky, the upper register can sound the tiniest bit forced. Yet taken into consideration with the rest of her efforts, this is a minor quibble which seems silly when I think of Kenny's deft negotiating of Handel's ornamentation or her solid trill throughout the disk.
Outstanding contributions also come from tenor Barry Banks in duets from "The Pear Fishers" and "Linda di Chamonix" (where he really shines) and mezzo Della Jones in a duet from "Semiramide".
This is one of the most satisfying recital disks I have ever heard, and I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of a simply beautiful voice.
A treasurable record of a truly great musician.......2000-08-26
Those who have not seen Yvonne Kenny in the theatre have really missed out. I have been fortunate to experience many of her great performances in the UK both in Handel and Mozart(perhaps the composers to whom her light, silvery soprano is best suited) but also her fabulous Feldmarschallin, a performance that for its subtlety and understanding of this enigmatic lady stands with the all time greats. It is partly preserved on a Chandos recording of Rosenkavalier highlights which for those unfamiliar with it is a real gem.
Kenny's voice has changed over the years both for better and worse. There is some scratchiness at the top nowadays (the aria from La Wally suffers seriously here and could perhaps with profit have been omitted) but her gorgeous timbre in the middle range remains seductive and fascinating, with its deliciously rounded production and seductive, resinous edge. She can still float a sensuous pianissimo. Above all, for a recording of arias in English. her diction is exemplary, and her understanding and use of text a model for others to follow.
The selection of works here is certainly eclectic and contains a number of relative rarities. Leila's and Mathilde's arias are beautiful pieces, beautifully sung; there is some lovely Handel and - especially - Purcell ("Fairest Isle" is all the more powerful for its simplicity) and the operetta and musical numbers are delivered with charm. She is probably too mature now for Ann Trulove, though "Gently, little boat" is touching. As a reminder of her past achievements in Bel Canto, she sings a duet from Semiramide and one from Linda di Chamonix ably partnered by Della Jones and Barry Banks respectively. Banks returns as Nadir to her Leila in a passionate account of an Act 2 scene from Pearl Fishers. The highlight of the set? Perhaps for me it is "So in Love" from Kiss me Kate, a performance that captures the bitterness and tragedy of this great piece perfectly.
David Parry, seriously underrated here in the UK, conducts stylishly and sympathetically. A serious blot on the recording is the horrible cover, though the English texts are all in the booklet along with some photos of Kenny's great performances. Her retirement from the opera circuit may be in sight before too many years, but at least this disc captures many of her best qualities for posterity.

Beautiful Victor Herbert.......1999-05-19
This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

Average, Average, Average.......2005-12-06
I just had to respond to all the great reviews RPWL in general, and this CD in particular, are getting. I've listened to a couple of their CDs now, many times each, and all I can say at that this band is very average. "Trying To Kiss The Sun" really deserves 2.5 stars, an average rating. The music is good, pleasant, but not really anything special. I've listened to a lot of prog music, and have heard stuff that gives me shivers (in a good way). This CD made me yawn. The main problem is the singer. Yogi Lang has a thin voice, nothing like David Gilmour's, and he always sounds to me like he's struggling to stay on pitch. If you listen to their live album, he sounds even worse there. Also, the vocal lines he writes are, again, average. Not terrible, just not really catchy or memorable. If you want memorable symphonic prog, go for Spock's Beard, or Neal Morse's new stuff, or just go with the masters: Pink Floyd. Don't spend your hard-earned money on RPWL. They'll just make you yawn.
Psychedelic Gem!.......2005-03-14
The amount of talent in this band is quite amazing. I am not talking just about the fantastic songs, but the placement of the instruments. There are no glaring out of place instruments, which really points towards at least an understanding on how to make a very good psychedelic recording, not really accomplished with any regularity since Pink Floyd.
Some songs that I feel need to be pointed out:
Waiting for a smile. This is a very good song... and the lyrics are written so well.. the music takes you on a good ride. Enjoy!
YOU. This song has a very nice slide guitar staggering around in the background...and it has to be the most subtle use of a slide I have ever heard. Very nice.
Side By Side. This is my favorite song on the CD. I can't really say why, but the acoustic opening... and the build up and trim down really remind me, in a way, of music that just isn't made anymore... of course PINK hasn't made any music in over ten years, but this really could fit neatly in any collection of Pink Floyd fans. I think it is just that great.
I have two CD's of this group, (this one and World Through My Eyes) and both of them are solid. There is NOT one weak song on any of the recordings. This really is outstanding when you think of the music that is out there on the scene today.
I recommend this band to anyone who might like Pink Floyd, and I also recommend this band to anyone who likes a great floaty sound that has strong instrumentalization. Any fan of Progressive rock will love this recording.

New blood in old veins..........2004-09-25
Having come across RPWL as a band influenced by Floyd and other notible bands, this CD is everything one could hope for. This bands years as a Pink Flod cover band really come through in their music without tarnishing the ground they are breaking on their own. This is the first CD in a long time that was pure pleasure from the start. Every member is truely performing at a a high level. It is wonderfull to hear talented musicians playing in the genre defined by bands like Floyd, Rush, Porcupine Tree and the like.
I will agree, the lead singer very much has a David Gilmour quality to his vocals. The overall sound to the album is quite mello at times, but also has nice bursts of energy as well. The boys will get caught in a groove but the lift you around with unexpected chord changes and great layered vocal harmony.
If you are someone who is looking to add to your collection of quality progressive rock, this is a must have.
excellent.......2004-06-12
This is an album my prog hating wife liked on her first listen. These guys write impressive melody and the music is very passionate. Great prog and great pop at the same time.
