About the Artist
Harley Gittleman has a truly rare gift called Synaesthesia he is able to internalize music and color images. With his additional gift of Absolute Pitch both elements are building blocks in composing his pieces enhancing his music with a mystique. His composing background stretches from contemporary, jazz, children's music and world music, to serious orchestral works. As a jazz trumpet player, he gained insight into the idioms that later influenced the strong harmonic qualities that are replete in recent compositions.
Harley started his music lessons at age 11. He went on to perform in many of the jazz bands and orchestra programs that were offered throughout his school age years. From the beginning, Harley's ear was so sensitive that he was called upon to tune the choirs, orchestral ensembles and jazz groups by humming a perfect A 440. Harley gave a mulitimedia presentation for the American Synaesthesia Association in May 2002, at the University of California at San Diego. The presentation encompased the melding together of the tones in Harley's music and the color responses that were invoked in a realtime demonstration. As the only composer invited to present a multimedia experience to the conference, his music, along with the tone to color demonstration, was greatly appreciated by the conference attendees.

This is the first composition in a series of five exploring and acknowledging an inner journey that the traveler must make in order to come to grips with the essence of one's nature. 2.Shiva's Shadow
This piece addresses the tearing down of the old to make way for the new. The piece invites the traveler to become immersed in the here and now and to transduce the extraordinary from the ordinary by letting go of the past. Predominate color is Green other colors are several hues of blue.
3.Road to Shangri-La
Personal evolution is the most challenging when one is confronted with the uphill ascent. Drawn from a tonal surrealism, the swirl of harmonies attempts to capture the dawning of internal lampposts along the way. The piece concludes as the climber is guided ever closer. Predominate color is gray.
4.Neti Neti Not this, Not that
Along the journey, the traveler has arrived at an inn where he is heralded forward to a pristine temple. Once there, he is led to a cavernous chamber where he is asked to make a choice: which path does he wishes to take? Having chosen, he's led to a giant procession. Sitting in utter splendor, a buddha-like persona greets him and extends his being to him. Together, they hasten toward the light. Predominate color is green.
5.Nirvana
The traveler reaches the pinacle of his life's experiences, the threshold of all that is unifying and blissful. Through captivating melodies and harmonies in motion, the denizens are here to welcome the traveler. Is it a dream or is it real? Predominate color is blue.
6.Blue Rays of the Sun
This selection pictures rays of the sun projecting a strong blue hue along a path in which the destination may not be known, but the way chosen is full of splashing mandala-like images thrown onto the skies. In this joyful state, it is possible to see and hear in ways unfamiliar but nonetheless enchanting. Truly in the moment. Predominate color is blue.
7.June 1990 Sense Memories
Actors can tap into sense memories to identify key emotions relating to their character in the here and now. Similarly, artists can call upon the opportunity to present strong feelings that time has not erased into the immediacy of their own moment. In this selection, feelings of nostalgia and pathos are strongly evident as I went back to a time when the moment truly felt that there was never a past or a future connected to it. The word Kal in Sanskrit means yesterday or tomorrow. Losing oneself in the moment is either the act of a fool or a very wise man. Predominate color is green.
