5 out of 5 stars Verrett Is a National Treasure.......2003-11-11

The two tracks of these women singing Rossini and Bellini are more than worth the price of this CD! I have an extensive collection of operatic LPs and CDs and have heard many others sing all the duets on this CD. These two women do it best! If you can recall seeing Olympic ice-skater Scott Hamilton in his prime, imagine TWO perfect voices PRECISELY hitting their "marks" (notes) in a beautifully prancing, rapid succession the way Hamilton's feet used to do! And Diva Verrett, now about 70, is currently passing her craft on to others at U Michigan as a voice professor! I only wish that more of her recordings were available now. If you are new to bel canto singing, this is an excellent CD to begin with. If you are a more experienced listener, this CD belongs in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Caballe & Verrett dazzle in bel canto, Verdi AND verismo!.......2003-03-26

One thing that is enjoyable with this CD is that it includes duets from operas of different styles. Here we have bel canto, late Verdi and verisimo.

It is amazing how exquisitely these two ladies sing all the different styles! Moreover, they feel every word they sing. Other reviewers compared this duo with the Sutherland-Horne one. I admire both Joan and Marilyn but they show little understanding of what they are singing; they are too busy impressing us with their high notes and fast coloratura.

The best moments are the bel canto duets (if only there was more). Caballe is unsurpassed in this area. Try to get her complete recordings (Norma, Il Pirata, Lucrezia Borgia). Verrett too had a big success in this repertoire. Pity they didn't record the Stuarda duet as well. The Barcarolle is ethereal, the best I've ever heard while the Aida duet passionate and moving, just as it should be. Caballe and Verrett don't really have verisimo voices but the two selections on this CD are enjoyable.

I join the praise of the previous reviewers and highly recommend this recording!

    5 out of 5 stars Top-quality duet singing.......2003-03-11

This recording is fantastic! Both Caballé and Verrett are great. Caballé has her lush, powerful voice. Verrett has her dark, rich, equally powerful voice. The two sing very well and are involved dramatically. The duet from "Semiramide" is great. However, Sutherland and Horne do it better. Their coloratura is cleaner and more spectacular than Caballé's and Verrett's. The duet from "Anna Bolena" is done well. However, I prefer Verrett's version with Sills. Sills is dynamite as Bolena and she has a top register equal to that of Verrett's. The duet from "Norma" is fantastic. In the case of this duet, I find Caballé and Verrett to be every bit as good as Sutherland and Horne. The duet from "Les Contes d'Hoffman" is great. Their voices blend beautifully. The duet from "Aïda" is done very well. Verrett is a subtly menacing Amneris, which is quite effective. The duet from "Madama Butterfly" is terrific. Caballé did not sing Butterfly very well, but here, she is magnificent. Verrett is a sympathetic Suzuki. I don't think she ever sang the role on stage. The last duet is from "La Gioconda". No complaints here. Both singers are in top form. I wish they had included the Confrontation Scene from "Maria Stuarda". All they needed to do was to cut out the lines of the other singers in the scene. Caballé and Verrett were great together on stage as Maria Stuarda and Regina Elisabetta, respectively.

This duet album is the perfect compliment to "Belleza Vocale" with Hei-Kyung Hong and Jennifer Larmore.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Magnificent.......2002-10-08

Of all the great opera solo and duet recital discs (Jussi Bjoerling singing almost any Verdi or Puccini; Sutherland/Horne in Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti; Fritz Wunderlich, Edda Moser or Margaret Price in Mozart; [name your favorites]), this is probably the most thrillingly beautiful I've ever heard. The gorgeous sound of these 2 great voices and the almost palpable excitement they generate are as glorious now as when I first heard this on LP about 25 years ago. Whenever I'm trying to convince a non-lover of opera what he or she is missing, this is my ultimate weapon when all else has failed -- it always works!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! These women are butter!.......2002-02-03

I bought this CD based on the reviews and am thrilled with it. I agree that the price is worth it just for the The Tales of Hoffman: Barocelle. This song is exquisite and the voices blend so perfectly that it is the most moving piece of music that I've experienced. Check this out!!!

        1 out of 5 stars hugely disappointed.......2006-09-21

Having been introduced to the Lisbon sound of Fado with the likes of Madredeus, Mariza, Christina Branco, Ana Moura, Dulce Pontes, Amelia Rodrigues, and a host of other fine singers and discs, I had always been impressed with the arrangements and accompaning guitar ensembles. For this reason I decided to perhaps broaden my exposure to Portuguese music and ordered this disc.

I was hugely disappointed. Not only does one song nearly sound like the next and the next and the next and almost seamlessly flow into each other (you can tell they end by the long pause between each one) but the overall recording quality of this disc is very poor.

I can not recommend this disc to anyone. Hey, that's my opinion, but isn't that what these reviews are about? For my money, I'd stick with known guitar ensembles and quality recordings from the likes of Madredeus.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous piece of music by one of the most virtuous player.......2001-05-29

This is a great CD, where you get to know some of the standards for Portuguese Guitar, as well as some great compositions by this great player. Pedro Caldeira Cabral is, after Carlos Paredes, the best Portuguese Guitar player of our times. It's a great experience for those music lovers who enjoy virtuous playing. It's a must.

5 out of 5 stars A first rate Puerto Rican tenor!.......2006-12-05

How do I begin? Well, Antonio Paoli had an enormous, vibrant, forward, sometimes hesitant, color varied, pingy, puissant bel canto heroic tenor voice. Lauri-Volpi wrote in Parallel Voices of his massive vibrations that set him, along with Bernardo de Muro apart as the largest of the dramatic voices of his time. Lauri-Volpi also sang during Del Monaco's time. In fact, one could say that Del Monaco's Otello was definitely inspired by Paoli as there are similarities in their tonal delivery - but only perhaps in Otello - (as otherwise) del Monaco recalls Galliano Masini. One could also say that de Muro must have used Paoli as the supreme example for his style of singing in that if played track to track it is difficult to distinguish them especially at the top. The difference being that Paoli used a forward bel canto tone, and de Muro was more chesty in the verismo manner, pushed.

It is exactly that uniqueness of the bel canto approach that distinguishes Antonio Paoli and what may have contributed to his loss of popularity in the height of verismo. His tone is not always beautiful but it is never pushed - ever and it is one legato line. He does not obscure consonants to obtain legato like dramatics in our time. Words have less meaning in our time, which makes sense - expressive artists are generally not employed. Musically, he has an exciting way of creating tension in the line by raising the pitch by a quarter-tone or less, and attacking the notes before the beat on which they fall. He seems gifted to find those oppurtune places in the music.

His bel canto method does not prevent any dramatic use his voice, for even though minimal breath escapes in the line, his Pagliacci scenes (on this set) possess supreme accent of dramatic timing and a full exploitation of the chest vibrations which ring more than any singer I have heard. Once again, he possesses bel canto, dramatic, and rhythmic gifts, and here in lies Paoli's contribution, uniqueness, and genius. Paoli is probably the most underrated tenor I have encountered.

Yet, a strange tentative quality abides much of the time - the same one Rosa Ponselle battled with.

            5 out of 5 stars A re-enactment for an infamous Duke..........2005-12-18

The Duke of Lerma's reputation hasn't aged well. Accused of bankrupting the Spanish Empire's banks, reducing the army and navy to a paltry shadow of their former selves, and miscalculating the horrendous economic effects of exiling thousands of moriscos (Christianized Moors) from Spain, biographies of the Duke often contain numerous less than complimentary passages. King Phillip III took the Duke under his wing and was subsequently treated to events of great religious splendor (allegedly to keep the Duke in the crown's favor as his reputation amongst the nobles melted like wax in a furnace; even the Duke's own son joined the plot against him).
The music on this CD attempts to recreate one such elaborate event. The Duke hosted Phillip III in Lerma in 1617, for the last time before the Duke's fall from favor, to a spectacle of theater, music, games, and religious ceremonies. At San Pedro church the King was treated to a lavish performance of First Vespers and Salve Service. And to this very church in Northern Spain Paul McCreesh and Company set out on their mission to reenact this same service. The results were incredible.
If the Duke wanted to curry the pious King's favor, he could not have chosen more inspiring and exhaulting music with which to do so. Mateo Romero's "Dixit Dominus a 16" provides two unbelievably moving creshendoes at the piece's end (though some doubt remains as to whether the piece actually appeared in the service). Tomás Luis de Victoria's "Magnificant a 12" provides eleven minutes of musical ecstasy. The track following it, Alonso Lobo's "Antiphona ad Magnificant" and Victoria's "Salve Regina a 8" provide the choral highlights of the disc. They may induce swooning. And these tracks only represent the highlights of the disc. Nearly every minute of music stands out on its own, particularly the choral pieces. Also, the four hundred year old organ of San Pedro church managed to hold together for this recording. Altogether, the ambience of the on site recording, the sonorous choirs, the amazing performances of all the musicians, and the wonderful gritty sound of the original organ all meld together in an amazing combination that would probably cause anyone to re-evaluate the historically maligned Duke (but they would come to their senses after reading his biography, of course; but it apparently worked on Phillip III). Regardless of the historical statuses of the Duke or Phillip III this CD represents a great example of beautiful and moving early seventeeth century music. Any fan of "early" music will revel in this disc through repeated listenings. The tracks mentioned above are worth the price of admission alone, but the totality of both CDs (comprising an hour and a half of music) won't dissapoint. Not only that, the 84-page booklet contains voluminous background information, photographs (including the famous Rubens equestrian portrait of the Duke from 1603), and all of the lyrics in French, German, Spanish, and English. The infamous Duke of Lerma (Fransisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas) may or may not be worthy of such a musical tribute some four hundred years after his controversial reign, but McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players put on such a spectacular performance that the exploits of the Duke (who, despite everything, also managed to become a Cardinal in 1618) fall nearly completely into the shadows. At least the Duke had great taste in music.

I agree with the previous reviewer 100%, some of this music is almost too beautiful for words. In particular, Tomas Luis de Victoria's Magnificat a 12 (track 24) on disc 1 & Salve Regina a 8 (track 11) on disc 2 really stand out. I also liked Alonso Lobo's O Quam Suavis Est. The "warmup" (track 1) on disc 1 also caught my attention right away. It sounds almost like light children's music which is a bit misleading in a way. I was soon floored by the overwhelming beauty & intensity of the rest of the album. The tracks by Tomas Luis de Victoria sold me. He's a real 'unsung hero' of the renaissance & his works on this album show why. The rest of course is also excellent. This is definitely one of my favourite McCreesh discs (I've got most of them). The other one would be Biber's Missa Salisburgensis, which has a totally different feel though. From what I've read, the Duke of Lerma was one of the most corrupt, sinister politicians there ever was. To get an idea of what he was like, check out

He could sure put on a concert though!

5 out of 5 stars Almost unbelievably beautiful.......2004-09-22

There are only a handful of choral pieces here among many instrumental arrangements (which I don't care for), but those have become favorites in my collection of Renaissance polyphony. One or two of the songs are the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

            5 out of 5 stars An event.......2002-08-21

McCreesh and his Gabrieli consort & Players has done a marvelous record again. I must say that I really like (and admire) McCreesh way of bringing life to "odd" rare stuff like this.

This is something rare, personal and it must have be a lot of hard work with this. The old church organs (two of them) and other old period instruments give this an extra dimension and singers are at top level. This is spanish medivial/rennaisance (looking a bit forward to early Baroque) at its best and an event.

It probably costs a lot to do something like this (research) and this package is well worth its price, even if last disc only contains ca 40 minutes of music (first disc has ca 72 minutes of music), because it comes with a nice, beutiful, informative booklet, great well engineered church sound and lots of good, great choral singing and music.
