About the Artist
LYDIA MCCAULEY combines Folk, World Music and New Age elements in an intoxicating celebration of life! Reminiscent of Medieval, Celtic, and Appalachian music, Lydia's original songwriting is laced with traditional tones that take her audience on a journey through the past and into the present. Her concerts are at once joyful, poignant and luminous, touched with a sense of humor. Alongside her husband and co-producer Kurt Scherer, McCauley formed the independent music label BRIMSTONE MUSIC in 1996. The couple began building a cadre of five talented musicians culled from an eclectic bouquet of musical influences. With great fanfare, McCauley's multi-talented ensemble began performing original and traditional music at major festivals, performing art centers, and various venues on the West Coast from British Columbia, Canada to Southern California. The magical stage setting of McCauley's performances has captivated and transported audiences to ancient times, and "the mystical power of her singing immediately enthralls her audience and invites them to a place of enchantment." Lydia and Kurt have produced three albums of primarily original music and a fourth recording of obscure Christmas and wintertime songs. Their critically acclaimed CD releases are currently featured on NPR radio, and syndicated radio programs such as Atlantic Crossing, Contemporary Celtic-World Radio.

Joy to the world.......2005-09-27
The Cambridge Singers have made several Christmas albums, and all of them are top notch. This particular one was done in 1989, and has several songs in honour of the Nativity. Their performance was done at one of their regular recording spots, the Great Hall of University College School, London.
--Music--
The music here consists of 21 carols, motets and oratorio choruses. These range from the great 'For unto us a child is born' of G.F. Handel's oratorio 'Messiah' to well known familiar Christmas carols to folk/traditional tunes from France, Canada, Basque, Germany, and England. Composers represented in addition to Handel include Britten, Victoria, Adam, Mason, Sweelinck, Sceidt, Adam, Berlioz, and Cambridge Singers' director, John Rutter, who provides two of his own compositoins, 'Angel's Carol' and 'What sweeter music'.
This is a beautiful recording, with the Cambridge Singers presenting grand voices and good spirit in honour of the Christmas holiday. There is tenderness, vibrancy and light in these songs that remind one both of the power of the Christmas miracle as well as the family emotions that holiday seasons draw forth.
--Liner Notes--
One thing that this has is a brief description of John Rutter and the group itself - it may sound strange to say, but many of their CDs lack these important pieces. This also includes an introduction to the CD, a listing of the tracks with composer, arranger and lyrics. Where lyrics are in other language, an English translation is provided.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
Their performance is a wonderful gift for the season.
The only Christmas CD ever played in my home.......2004-11-02
I am pretty picky about my Christmas music, and this CD is the only one I ever need for the holiday season. The division of the CD into joy/peace halves is really nice. Rutter's arrangements are the best I've ever heard; I was first exposed to him in my high school choir and have been a fan of his Cambridge Singers ever since. My favorite track on this CD is the Rutter original composition, "What Sweeter Music". Simply gorgeous. A must-have for any caroller or carol enthusiast!
A Christmas Album to Fall In Love With.......2003-10-08
About ten years ago, I got a part time job at Christmas time at a music store. As soon as one of the local classical stations played a few Cambridge Singers tracks, the store sold out of the CD's. Knowing that I was missing something great, I hid the last disk in the store so I could purchase it. It was this disk and it was after listening to it that I fell in love with this wonderful musical ensemble. The recording's version of "O Holy Night" is probably the best available. "The Shepherd's Farewell" is moving. "Still, Still, Still" is gentle and reflective. Rutter's own "Angel's carol" is probably my favorite track on this disk. If this is your first Cambridge Singers recording, believe me, you too will be addicted and it will become a favorite in your Christmas collection.
Absolutely glorious Christmas music.......2002-12-11
Not to sound like a commercial for them, but thanks to Amazon.com's superb referral and list system, I was lucky enough to find The Cambridge Singers for the first time this holiday season. I'm a huge fan of the King's College Choir and others in that vein, but The Cambridge Singers have a sound and style that is, while similar, all their own, and absolutely *glorious*. Simply put, this is Christmas choral music at its finest. And without even hearing them -- aside from the few "samples" on their Amazon.com pages -- I have two more of their Christmas CDs on the way to me as I write this.
There are a few Christmas standards here, such as "Joy To The World" and "Ding! Dong! Merrily on High", but there are also lesser-known jewels like "Somerset Wassail" and "The Shepherd's Farewell". And if your favorite Christmas carol is, like mine, "O Holy Night", you won't find a better recording of it anywhere than the one you hear on this disc; it's stunningly beautiful, with all three verses of the carol sung, unlike most interpretations that are out there today.
If you're a fan of choral music, just go ahead and buy this disc; you *won't* be disappointed.
Beautiful, spiritually uplifting music!.......2001-12-22
John Rutter brings us another beautiful Christmas CD! I purchased two Christmas recordings of the Clare College choir (also conducted by John Rutter) and they were so beautiful I ordered this about a week later. I was not disappointed, and if you love beautiful, heavenly Christmas music, you won't be either! Some of my favorites were "Angels' Carol", "O holy night", and "What sweeter music", but there isn't a bad song on this album. I plan on playing this music year-round. I've gotten to the point that I am able to recognize John Rutter's sound on the radio (and I'm not a music expert). The gentle yet vibrant voices are very unique and frequently bring tears to my eyes.

Customer Reviews:
The best Christmas Bells yet!.......2001-06-09
I am so glad I have this wonderful CD of Christmas songs with bells. The bells are truly played as one instrument and you can really get into the Christmas spirit. It's so hard to record bells well, but they did it! I always tell my friends to BUY this CD to add to their Christmas music collection. In fact, I give the CDs away as gifts! A GREAT RECORDING!
A nice departure.......2001-06-08
While we all associate bells with Christmas, we think more of bells ringing wildly in their towers. And when we think of Christmas music, we think schmaltz. This album features a different kind of bells -- handbells -- and music that is anything but schmaltzy. As I listen to this beautiful, seamless music, I am in awe of the skills required to make it sound that way: a dozen people handling dozens of bells, sounding as one instrument. The musical selections are varied, the performance top-notch, and the experience of listening is marvelous. I do not hesitate to recommend this CD to any listener.
In my opinion.......2001-06-08
Sonos is very accomplished, yes, and they play what they do very well, but nothing really appealed to me as "exciting" bell music. I have nothing against classical music, but they need perhaps faster songs or something of that sort. Other than that, it was great!
A smooth, relaxing Christmas album.......2000-02-01
"Christmas with Sonos Handbell Ensemble" continues the tradition of excellent playing and fine engineering pioneered on Sonos' first disc. The repertoire runs the gamut, but leans toward the quiet, mellow carols and tunes, and the other instruments featured (flute & clarinet) are perfectly balanced and blended with the overall sound. The acoustic is marvelous, greatly benefitting from the superb room at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and audiophile-quality production.
Of special interest is the bluesy/gospel "Christmas Tidings" (Mary Had a Baby Boy/Go Tell It On the Mountain) with clarinet, the lovely "Panis Angelicus" with flute, and a quirky arrangement of "Carol of the Bells," which does not do what you expect! There's the ever-popular nutcracker, along with the Leroy Anderson's hit "Sleigh Ride." A moody "Veni Emmanuel" is paired with a mediaeval-sounding "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." There's even a little Prokofiev: the "Troika" (another kind of sleigh ride), from Lt. Kije.
This CD is great for parties and background music but can also be brought up and appreciated for its detail and finer qualities. A rare combination.

Resonant, artful arrangements of seldom-heard Christmas carols.......2006-10-01
A lovely collection of traditional carols and dances from Western Europe--some haunting, some jaunty, and all richly orchestrated for voice, keyboard, dulcimer, viola, recorder, guitar, mandolin, double bass and world percussion. This album has the same depth, quality and wholesome honesty of McCauley's other work, and while it starts off on the gentle side, it picks up in intensity as it goes along. Although all the tracks are great, my favorites are towards the end, including the rowdy "Bring Us In Good Ale," the inventive, Mid-East-tinged "Star of the East," and Frank Jackson's folksy arrangement of the 14th century Italian dance "Trotto," which is full of fiery fiddle, thrumming guitar and hints of progressive folk. Throughout their recording career, McCauley and husband/co-producer Kurt Scherer have maintained a core group of truly talented musicians, whose camaraderie and sensitivity to each other's improvisations continues to shine through in each new endeavor. Phil Heaven (bowed strings) and Frank Jackson (recorders and whistles) have been with them since their 1998 debut album, "Sabbath Day's Journey," while guitarist Brian Cunningham and percussionist Jason Darling have been around for at least the past one or two. Joining the team on this album is Lynne Givler on double bass, adding a nice depth and grounding to the sound. Everybody seems to have a Christmas album these days, and "The Moon of Wintertime" is a great one, with a distinctive mood and flavor all it's own. Compare and contrast it with some other stylish favorites of mine, also highly recommended: "A Winter Garden" and "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" by Loreena McKennitt, "Celtic Christmas I & II" and "Joy! Joy! Joy!" by Kim Robertson, "Celtic Christmas III: A Windham Hill Sampler," One Wintry Night" by Jerry Read Smith and Lisa Maria Smith, "Sanctus" by the Angels of Venice, "Christmas" by Tino Izzo, "Poets and Angels" by Ottmar Liebert, "Wolcum Yule" by Anonymous 4, "An Angel's Noel" by the Ware-Patterson Duo, and "Christmas Morning" and "Silent Night" by Lisa Lynne.

Reviewing Flor Peeters.......2003-12-23
I first heard the Entrata Festiva in 1965, and used it for my wedding recessional in 1967. Until the internet came along, I was frustrated trying to find a professional recording if that piece. Peeters is one of the finer sacred composers, and I would like to find a professional recording of his Mass in honor of St. Joseph--sung in the original LATIN, if possible. The whole Mass is just as awesome as the Entrata, but the Credo touches the high point of Catholic Liturgy before Vatican II. I also used the St. Joseph Mass at my wedding, but the choir sang it in English. The Latin is more poetic, but the music is first class either way.
Excelent source of inspiration for all seasons!.......1999-11-12
Dr. Keiser once again shows us why she is known as one of the foremost organists and church musicians of our time. The fabulous organ and chourus from Fairmount Presbyterian are also very impressive, as are the Cleveland Lyric Brass. Two favorites on this album for me include the awesome "Baptism Dance" from Dan Locklair's Windows of Comfort, and Flor Peeters' awe inspiring Entrada Festiva. The sheer power of organ, brass and percussion sent chills up my spine. This album showcases well the talent and skill of Dr. Keiser, the well known professor of music at the exceptionally prestigious Indiana University School of Music. Brava!
