Customer Reviews:
Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12
If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.
Good music........2007-03-09
I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.
Magnificent!.......2007-02-27
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.
Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).
I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.
I loved it!.......2007-02-22
Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.
The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15
Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

Album Description
The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, scored for solo violin and Western orchestra, is one of the best known of all contemporary Chinese compositions. It has become indelibly linked with Takako Nishizaki, whose seventh recording of this hugely popular work features on this disc. Songs and Dances from the Silk Road, by the Slovak-born Peter Breiner, is based on traditional melodies to be heard in the West of China, from where the famous Silk Road takes its course through Central Asia to the Occident. Takako Nishizaki is one of the world's most recorded and appreciated violinists, especially beloved in China and other parts of Southeast Asia through her many popular recordings and personal appearances in concerts and in the media. She also lies at the very heart of Naxos' rich recorded offering of music for the violin.

Fantastic .......2006-08-06
This is a delicate, soothing, mastery of East meeting West. My favorite selection on this CD is "Spinning," which is so very beautiful. I think that anyone would do well to add this to their collection.
Butterfly Lovers Concerto.......2005-10-07
A lovely recoding...not as breathtaking as the live performances I've heard, but divine to be able to hear this piece at will...no ticket required

From Amazon.ca
Like a Great White North-ern version of Johnny Cash, Ian Tyson is a walking legend, the lines on his weathered face roadmaps to his historic life. Tyson started making indentations in the '60s as a folk musician (one half of Ian and Sylvia) whose music has been covered by everyone from Neil Young and Judy Collins to Suzy Bogguss and Gordon Lightfoot. Songs like "Four Strong Winds" and "You Were Always On My Mind" were among Ian's contributions to Canadian musical history. He also hosted his own TV show, won the Order of Canada, and temporarily quit the music industry, preferring to be a rancher and rodeo rider.
Tyson could've played it safe on Songs from the Gravel Road by bringing in straight-up country pickers, but he decided to shake things up with the inclusion of respected jazz musicians, including Guido Basso on trumpet and Phil Dwyer on sax. As a result, straight-ahead country melodies like "So No More" become jazz-backed twang. That cut leads straight into a traditional cover of "One Morning In May", a song made famous by James Taylor; the tune is high on charm, complete with an exemplary fiddle solo and whimsical delivery. Tyson's great players also breeze through a host of other tunes, everything from songs infused with Spanish undertones ("Silver Bell", "Always Saying Goodbye") to a reggae track, "Range Delivery". That song is the disc's most charming cut, attributed in part to the tune's co-vocalist, Cindy Church (one fourth of the country group Quartette). There is nothing out of left field on the album, just an hour of country-laden comfort from one of Canada's most enduring roots legends. --Denise Sheppard
Customer Reviews:
Not Ian's good cowboy music anymore.......2007-06-28
I have many many cd's and cassettes of Ian Tyson and his with Sylvia as well. This is not the good cowboy music as he has done previously. If you want a new sound with brass and sythysizer style music buy this. If you are interested in Ian's signature sound of his cowboy music don't.
"Casey's Gone" is worth the price of the Album.......2006-12-06
The tract "Casey's Gone" is a classic. Great sound, lyrics and sentiment. "Heaven was a flatbed on a gravel road." "Just an old yellow dog. Just another sad song." Any one who ever had a cow dog can identify.
Another miss by a great singer.......2006-05-01
As much as I want to like this CD, I just don't. As with "Lost Herd," Ian has put out a CD so bland, mellow, and listless that I haven't bothered to listen to it after the first three tries. I know that nothing can compare to "Cowboyography"--Ian's best album and one of my top five country-Western CD's ever--but I still expect a lot better than Ian's last two albums. Even "Live at Longview" missed the mark, containing few of his fabulous country songs from his earlier albums. I know Ian's up there in age now, but damn, I wish he'd do more songs like those from "Cowboyography" and "And Stood There Amazed" and "Old Corrals And Sagebrush."
KLP-Ian.......2006-01-16
We were disappointed with the type of music on this CD. We have Ian Tyson previous CD's and just did not care for the music on this one.
Amazing!.......2005-12-23
I used to love Ian Tysons music to death but when he came out with "Eightteen Inches of Rain" I was a little dissapointed and I was even more Dissapointed when "Lost Heard" came out but dont get me wrong! the songs on lost heard are great but the jazz arangements really turn things down on it. Songs from the gravel road dose have those arangements on one or two parts on the song but they are not as noticeable. But all the other songs are great
GO OUT AND BUY IT!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29
I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

A great addition.......2005-08-20
Joan Morris and her husband, composer William Bolcom, take another trip back to the early days of Broadway musicals and earlier. In the same groove as their earlier albums, After the Ball and Vaudeville. A great addition to your collection if you love this kind of music, performed the way it was meant to be heard.
Joan Morris and William Bolcom return to their roots.......1999-03-13
Back in 1974, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and her husband, William Bolcom, recorded "After the Ball," a collection of turn-of-the-century popular songs, some of which hadn't been recorded since the early part of the century, if ever. Now, after bringing their talents to the music of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and most recently, Vincent Youmans, they return to the turn of the century with this delightful collection. Note: no compromises were made with the original turn-of-the-century lyrics; this CD is not for those obsessed with "political correctness." But then, those obsessed with political correctness generally don't have much taste, anyway.

Still singin' those mountain ballads after all these years.......2006-12-05
Country music fans today, just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, but did we ever really think about the starts of country music? Who started it? What kind of songs did they sing? Were they any good? Did their children follow in their footsteps and were they sucessful?
So many questions!! This CD is the answer. The first family of country music was the Carter Family, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle of Clinch Mountain, VA. But they were much more than mountain hilbillies who liked to party on friday nights. They wrote songs about lost love, the place they knew and loved, and most of all, just fun songs.
We start off with the legendary. "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter's theme song. This song is basically about how if we just look on the bright side of things, they aren't so bad after all. "Storms and clouds will in time pass away, and the sun again will shine, bright and clear."
Hey June Carter fans? Did you know where "Wildwood Flower" came from? It was from the good ol' Carter Family! Actually, it was one of their first hits, probably the most reknown carter family song in the world. About lost love, it's a song you'll want to sing 24/7!
"Worried Man Blues," is my very favorite Carter Family song. It has a catchy tune, and a good beat. The song is about a man who is sentenced to go to prison, but he has no idea what he's done. Filled with fun and laughter, this will become and family favorite.
"My Clinch Mountain Home," tells you alot about the Carter's backaround history. It reflects the carter's lives from "Ole Virginny."
"Foggy Mountain Top," is a great song. It features Sara's yodeling, and Maybelle's great guitar pickin'. This song, like "My Clinch Mountain Home", secretly shares backaround information about life as a Carter as well.
Ah, "Single Girl, Married Girl," the Carter's first hit, and undoubtfully their most sucessful. This is a solo for Sara, and also a solo for her autoharp.
In "My Old Cottage Home," A.P. does most of the singing, which is rare since he usually only did backup. Very similar to "My Clinch Mountain Home," but also very different. It's one of my favorites, so yuo will proabaly liek it too.
"The Valley of Shanandoah," is a very sad song. It tells a story about how a man fell in love with a beautiful girl in the past summer and promises to return to her next year so they can be married. Sadly, when the man returns, he finds that his true love had passed away into the great kingdom above. Teh song may be sad, but it capture your heart.
"Chewing Gum," is a really fun song to sing, and it really helps past the tiem away. A song that Sara wrote when she was a child, "Chewing Gum," features many funny lines that will make you laugh out loud as if you were watching Hee-Haw!
If you buy this CD, it's liek hearing the Carter's story through music. It's truly any country msuic fan's treasure. Be sure to read my other revies for June Carter Cash's "Press On", "Wildwood Flower", "Keep on teh Sunyn Side: Her life in Music, and "Live Recordings from the Lousiana Hayride."

Customer Reviews:
A document.......2005-02-13
What a joy! A shining example of great singing. This is dramatic singing at its finest. The voice is a phenomenon - I only wish I heard her live in the opera house. A voice of breadth, power and beauty, like a doric column - even from top to bottom, a true soprano dramitica agilita. (This is a woman that sang Bach cantata arias constantly as a member of the famous Bach Aria Group as well as the great dramatic parts).
I feel there are several definitive interpretations here, 'Ozean der Ungerheur' - the cantilena and coloratura are mind boggling for a voice of this size - Nilsson cannot even compare in this regard. Also the Menotti aria, what drama, what sound, what DICTION!
This recording is a document against which every serious, professional singer should test their 'mettle'. The collaboration with Thomas Schippers is very fine.
A magnificent artist.......2005-01-10
Eileen Farrell sings amazingly on this CD. She is superb in the opera arias; I especially like her in "Suicidio!", "Adieu, forêts!", Il est doux, il est bon", and "L'année en vain-Azaël! pourquoi mas-tu quittée". In the "La Gioconda", she sings with much passion and pours out glorious torrents of sound. Her singing of the phrase "un dì leggiadre volavan l'ore" is exquisite. She shows remarkable delicacy in the French opera arias, as well as her huge sound during the climaxes. I really am not as impressed with her "Ozean, du Ungeheuer". She doesn't do it for me in this aria the way Birgit Nilsson does. Also, the engineers scale back the sound during the cabaletta. This lessens the impact of Farrell's immense voice, which is really an incredible instrument. I love her singing of the aria from "The Consul", "To this we've come". She displays extraordinary emotion and fire in this aria, all the while singing in very clear English.
In the English-language songs, she sings with emotional warmth, sincerity, and great restraint. Her voice displays a timeless beauty in the song "Down by the Sally Gardens". Her rendition of "Danny Boy" is heartfelt and very touching. Her English diction is exemplary, every word clearly enunciated with care and clarity.
One thing I admire tremendously about Eileen Farrell is her seemingly natural way with any type of music she sings. She always adapts her voice to the demands of the piece. Also, her sincerity and utter guilelessness is very refreshing to hear. She never fakes emotions, overemotes, or wallows in her own sound. Listen up, Renée Fleming!
Farrell demonstrates on this CD why she is such a legendary singer.
Stunning vocalism.......2004-02-26
This recital is a great tribute to a sadly underrated singer. Some of the less familiar items are stunningly sung (e.g. the Debussy and Massenet arias), but the highlight for me is the "Suicidio." This just might be the best recording of this area ever (with nods to Ponselle, Callas, Tebaldi, et al). I think it blows the sox off the competition, much the same way the "In questa reggia" from the Puccini album does. Hopefully, Columbia will see fit to reissue the Puccini someday.
After they revived me...........2003-08-26
Nevermind the technical merit and attention to detail that a review should have, this is purely and simply a rave review. Nothing more, nothing less. I love opera, am hard to please, and generally don't like albums of arias, preferring the complete works to the fancy bits. But, God in heaven, what a voice. I've listened to it twice in the first day, and I can still hardly believe it's true. Don't wait. For heaven's sake, buy the thing NOW! THIS MINUTE! MOVE! Now I'm going to lie down to recover... Thank you.
One of the most impressive dramatic sopranos i've heard.......2001-06-20
I heard this recording many years ago (the operatic arias only), and it was high time for it to be reissued. Farrell is one of the most impressive dramatic sopranos i've ever heard. It's also probably her best recording, in full command of (majestic) voice and style.
