About the Artist
For the last 20 years pianist Matthew Cook has been a treasure known only to those who venture beyond the Redwood Curtain in Northern California. During that time he has logged over 200 live performances each year, delighting visitors and locals alike in the area's finest hotels, resorts and concert halls, and created six wonderful collections of solo piano music on CD.

With a heady mix of unique arrangements and emotional playing Cook takes his audience on an eclectic journey through some of the great songwriting of 20th Century America. Drawing on a Classical background and his experiences with Rock and Roll, Country and Reggae bands, Cook has developed a refreshing, melodic approach that showcases his love of this wonderful instrument.

Following his 2001 release of all-original music, 'Redwood Reflections,' Matthew's 2002 project was his fourth collection of covers titled 'Stormy Weather.'

Product Description
Redwood Reflections is a collection of original compositions by Matthew Cook. With singing melodies and vast moods Cook creates an inspirational homage to the giant Redwood Trees of Northern California. Drawing from such diverse influences as George Winston, Scott Joplin, Stephen Stills and Keith Jarrett, Cook weaves together a mozaic of rhythms and textures. From it's misty beginnings to it's Latin flavored end this album flows wonderfully.

The ‘Redwood Reflections Suite' takes us on a journey through magnificent groves of these ancient trees from the stillness of the ‘Morning Fog' to the magnificence of a warm, sunny ‘Sanctuary', an exuberant flight ‘Over The Canopy' and a triumphant, refreshing return in ‘Mountainside'.

‘If I Could Fill Your Cup' is a beautiful love ballad with a singing melody. "One time I found myself without a Valentines Day present for my wife. I sat down at the piano and this song came flowing out, lyrics and all. It makes a great solo piano piece."

‘Benson's Soliloquy' is straight out of the pages of Scott Joplin. "I wrote this piece for my father who was a big fan of the way I play Joplin."

‘The End Of The Century' is a melodic lament: "By the end of the 90's it didn't look like we had come very far since the 60's. I just wonder where all that idealism went."

The album ends with the toe-tapping ‘El Cuervo', a song cowritten by Matthew Cook and his son Kai.

Redwood Reflections is a journey well worth taking for lovers of piano music.

4 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-02-18

"Redwood Reflections" is a collection of twelve original piano solos "from the Heart of the Redwoods." Matthew Cook has previously released six albums of covers, and this is his first album of his own material. I hope he will continue to release collections of original work. It is full of energy, and Cook excels at a variety of playing styles from blues to new age to rock, pop, jazz, and classical. In other words, he does it all and does it well. The suite, "Redwood Reflections," is made up of seven pieces that flow together like a medley. "Morning Fog" opens the Suite with a beautiful musical portrait of the cool, soft fog that we often encounter in Northern California. In the Redwoods, it is stunning - there are no hard edges anywhere, and when the sunlight filters through the mist, it takes your breath away. "Passage" is a bit more intense and melancholy - I like this one a lot! "Sanctuary" is smooth, elegant, and very beautiful. "Can't Keep My Mind on Business" is my favorite. Deep, funky piano blues - great stuff! The other five non-suite selections range from the sweet ballad "If I Could Fill Your Cup" to the gentle rag "Benson's Soliloquy" to the jazzier and more upbeat "El Cuervo," which reminds me a bit of some of Spencer Brewer's jazz stylings. There must be something in the water up there since "Redwood Reflections" was recorded in Brewer's Laughing Coyote Studios! Matthew Cook is a fascinating artist with his versatility and beautiful playing style.
