5 out of 5 stars A voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-02-07

This is an excellent sampling of Handel's music and it is indeed "heavenly". Much of the music in Handel's operas, cantatas and oratorios are wonderfully vivid pieces of musical painting, and show Handel's genius in a light that is somewhat unfamiliar to modern musicians. Such passages as the sleep of Somnus in 'Semele' and the moonrise in 'Ariodante', to name but two instances out of many, form an important link in the history of programme music. But to those who understand and enjoy the Handelian idiom its beauty appear eternally new, and its unfailing dignity and loftiness of style recall the words in which Edward FitzGerald summed up his opinion of Handel: "His is the music for a great active people." I have many of the discs already, but some of the songs were new to me for which I am grateful! Some of the high points for me: the duet from Guilio Cesare sung by contralto(Stephanie Blythe) and countertenor (Derek Ragin); the solo from Alcina sung by Arleen Auger(soprano)and David Daniel's rendition of "Ombra mai fu" from Serse. I have Andreas Scholl singing "Ombra" and I never realized how much more there is to that song till I heard Daniels sing it. Anyway this record is a great buy for Handelians.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best...Handelian Masters for the Uninitiated.......2005-04-21

For those who would prefer their Handel in bite-size portions, this excellent two-disc set may do the trick. Virgin Classics has chosen stellar aria and duet selections from their extensive Handel discography (1978-2003) and in the process, come up with as definitive a collection of the prolific composer's work as any on the market now. With a running time of well over 2 ½ hours, this compilation covers a broad canvas drawn from some of Handel's finest Italian operas, such as "Rodelinda", "Giulio Cesare", "Rinaldo" and "Deidamia". Even more, there are selections from his English works ("Hercules" and "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato"), as well as miscellaneous vocal Italianate selections.

You know you're in for a world-class set when you have the amazing countertenor David Daniels book-ending the collection, beginning with his platinum-standard version of the much-covered "Frondi tenere...Ombra mai fù" from "Serse" and Bertarido's mournful "Pompe vane di morte!...Dove sei, amato bene" from "Rodelinda". And the set ends in a dream-like state with his wondrous Sesto/Cornelia duet with contralto Stephanie Blythe on the heartbreaking "Madre...Son nata a lagrimar" from "Giulio Cesare". In between is a veritable feast provided by a who's who among the world's leading Handelians. Highlights on disc one include soprano Sandrine Piau and alto Sara Mingardo melding effortlessly on the graceful and vocally challenging "Sorge il di" from the Neapolitan serenata, "Aci, Galatea e Polifemo". Blythe captures Dejanira's requisite madness beautifully in the air, "Where shall I fly?" from "Hercules". Countertenor Gérard Lesne does several thrilling turns on an entire Handel cantata, "Splenda l'alba in oriente". From "Giulio Cesare", legendary contralto Janet Baker contributes a heroically measured "How silently, how slyly", equally revered countertenor James Bowman glides over "Upstart, barbarian and traitor" with true panache, and soprano Valerie Masterson holds her own among these giants showing a diverse range of emotion on "Flow my tears" alternating easily between sonorous and vibrant.

Disc two starts with mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux displaying some genuinely impressive runs on two arias from "Arminio", "Fatto scorta al sentier della gloria" and "Fiaccherò qul fiero orgoglio". Soprano Arleen Auger does a defiantly passionate turn on "Ombre pallide" from "Alcina", which compares favorably with Renée Fleming's more familiar version on Elektra. Daniels has yet another powerful vocal turn on the victorious "Venti, turbini" aria from "Rinaldo". Piau returns as well, this time intertwining atmospherically with mezzo-soprano Gloria Banditelli on the splendid "Prendi l'alma e prendi il core" from "Rodrigo". Operas are not the only source here. There is a charming duet between soprano Suzie LeBlanc and countertenor Derek Lee Ragin on the effusively Italianate "Tanti strali al sen", and a more dramatically diverse one between tenor Paul Agnew and soprano Patricia Petibon on "Caro autor do mia doglia" - both showcase yet another dimension of Handel to which I have not been exposed. Truth be told, if you enjoy these selections, you should purchase the original recordings, for example, Daniels' wonderful 1998 "Handel: Operatic Arias". But this will do in a pinch for the uninitiated who want an overview of Handel's musical genius. Trust me, with this stellar group of Handelians, you will beg for more.

5 out of 5 stars Andrea and Giovanni.......2007-05-10

I can only say "ditto" to all the previous reviews. This recording has to be the best one of Andrea's works, which are all too rarely performed. Love the strong, low-register, at-times-blasting brass! Surely this is how the Gabrieli's intended the music. It makes the hair stand up on the back of one's neck! McCreesh's dynamic's instincts are spot-on and are a dramatic departure from his previous efforts. I cannot praise this CD enough.....

5 out of 5 stars This CD won several awards .......2007-03-24

The other reviews here are spot on and i agree! This is a very special disc.
May i also add that it was awarded Record of the Year 1990 by ABC-FM Stereo
here in Australia and Gramophone (UK) 1990 Early Music Award.
I also suggest looking at abcshop dot com dot au for a superb selection of High quality classical music most of which is produced in Oz and not seen in huge quantities overseas. Amazon does have a few also. Type in ABC Classics
and browse through the selection.

5 out of 5 stars Venetian Coronation CD.......2007-01-09

The item arrived in a good time and was well packed and in excellent condition. It was less than ordering it elsewhere. I learned of the music on PBS radio and was enchanted by it. Having a copy is a joy.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This is the best I've heard Gabrieli.......2005-01-19

The performance of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli is quite amazing. The acoustical effects of brass, organ and voices bouncing of the walls in natural stereophonic sound is really beyond description. A good mix of brass ensemble, vocals, organ and gregorian chant. I had not listened much to Andrea Gabrieli before I bought this CD and I have to admit that his contributions to this CD are very powerful.

The "omnes" at the end of the cd has extraordinary musical power. It builds to an amazing climax that has caused many a chill to go up my spine. On a personal note, I listened to this song on my way to see my alzheimer's stricken mother who had died just moments earlier. The finale to this CD represents the finale to my mother's life to me and will always be an important piece of music to my soul. I truly love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars doesn't do this recording justice.......2004-12-28

There is little to say about this superlative recording that hasn't been said before. It represents the high point of the recording career of Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players. This recording happens to be one of the best recordings of the music of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli available.

If you only ever buy one recording of Gabrieli's music, make it this one. There are a few good recordings of Gabrieli's music but none are better that 'A Venetian Coronation'. The recording 'Venetian Church Music', by the Taverner Consort & Players, is similar in quality to 'A Venetian Coronation', only Andrew Parrott did not choose to present the music as a recreation of an event.

The cornetts, Baroque violins, Baroque trombones and organs are all played with great style and panache in this recording. The choir features men's voices - from soprano to bass, and the sound blends beautifully with the cornetts and sackbuts.

Listen to 'Deus qui beatum Marcum' and you'll buy this recording.

This recording was a miracle and a wonder in its time and it is still the most impressive recording of its kind.

    4 out of 5 stars Overall, a good cd.......1999-08-02

This is a pretty good cd with a wide variety of music. The "Goldrush Suite" is fun to listen to, as is the Phil Woods excerpt. "American Sketches" is played fine, and is written to represent the ethnic background of each of the players. The whole composition of the piece could use a little more sparkle, but the players do it justice. Overall, a good cd, well played, though not outstanding.

Eighteenth-century American harpsichord music isn't something you hear everyday, but the delightful sounds of Enlightenment in the New World can be appreciated by any keyboard lover. Using a French harpsichord built in 1774, Olivier Baumont performs lively (not to mention "enlightened") works by seldom-heard composers William Selby, Alexander Reinagle, Victor Pelissier, someone named simply Mr. Newman, and a few others. There's nothing monumental here--James Hewitt's "Yankee Doodle with 9 Variations" may be too silly to fully appreciate--but the playing is exquisite and there are some great discoveries. European roots can be heard all over these works--Reinagle's "Lee Rig" is a lyrical arrangement of a Scottish jig, Pelissier's work is a hornpipe dance--as composers struggled to find their own voice and national identity. Hewitt's 10-minute-long "The Battle of Trenton," where Baumont's keyboard and a narrator recount one of General Washington's most famous battles, closes out this disc. For those who love the sound of a harpsichord but have grown tired of hearing the same baroque repertoire, this disc is a real find. --Jason Verlinde

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and moving music.......2002-06-11

[...] I enjoyed this disc very much. Although this music is not stellar in a Handelian/Mozartian way, it captures an interesting moment in Early American History...the quality of the music is admirable, charming and well performed. If you are a fan of baroque music and harpsichord music in particular, I would recommend this disc. I've always been interested in music that has fallen "between the cracks" of music history. Who cares if it is not "great music"....There is much delight to be had from it and you can easily see inspiration from better known European composers.
As for the Picture of the Twin Towers on the front of the disc (a happy accident)...I received this disc in the mail only one day after Sept. 11. The picture shows the towers in a very good light...almost mystical and very peaceful. This struck a very pleasant chord in my psyche..much the same way the music did.

3 out of 5 stars nice playing, bad music.......2002-05-24

The title of this review says it all. This is excellent playing from a technical and musical standpoint, but nothing recorded on this disc is really worth hearing even a single time. CDs that focus on a single, unknown genre are asking for trouble, especially when that genre (in this case, 18th century American harpsichord music) is unknown for a perfectly good reason. There is too much great keyboard music to hear from that age to waste a second listening to this CD.

          Album Description

          Through the Mist:
          Nature as the Door;

Mist on our porch screen gives view to nearby trees and hint of mountains beyond. All beautiful in itself but also a door to inner spaces and to comforting spirit's glow. Healing love brings us to our true self ...

The entire album is a single event, but each piece, Throught the Mist, Ice Mountain, and Glenalyce, and its individual tracks may be enjoyed on its own. Throught the Mist is a full symphony. Ice Mountain may be considered a suite, and Glenalyce was my wife's family's summer retreat. We spent many happy years visiting Grandma there. This album's cover was a misty day's view from the porch.

With Nature, so familiar and so loved, as the door, this music is an inner journey to life's sacred goal. Full of orchestral sounds, familiar but new, this album explores the limits and subtlties of electronic music with a message of spiritual hope for our age.

Listeners' comments include; “Wow ...” “ Profound ...” “ If everyone in the world heard this music, crime would be extinguished ...”

            Album Description

Introducing a new level of heroism to the New Age, the music of “Rokka's Return” is transforming and deeply moving. With the opening track we are instantly transported to a higher realm of reality. Intense, ringing, soaring resonances depict the Hero for the Good. The very molecules of our bodies are vibrated, penetrated, rearranged--transforming the listener through tones into the hero. Thus transformed, we, the hero, experience the drama, the wonder, and the sacred joy of the return home. In the five tracks of “In The Fields,” musical colors reveal beautiful fields, a valley of sadness, and then lead us beyond to uplifting moments culminating in the stirring grace of “Angel Voices - Wendy's Flowers.” Reaching the final track, “Woodland Hills,” we and the music are now alone. Lifting us up into the hills, spacial tones of bravery, strength, resonant with truth, take us to that place of divine harmony and we are touched by eternity. This CD is also marked by new sonic beauty which further enhances the listeners' experience.
