Month in the Brazilian Rainforest: Dawn Chorus
Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Dawn Chorus....sunrise stirs animals from their sleep. Dew drips from the leaves as the sounds of frogs and crickets join a crescendo of birdsong. Every voice contributes its unique texture to the sonic chorus of the forest.
For each purchase in the A Month In The Brazilian Rainforest series of the Atmosphere Collection, a donation will be made to The Nature Conservancy
Dawn Chorus. Rain Forest. Jungle Journey. Evening Echoes. These four recordings comprise A MONTH IN THE BRAZILIAN RAINFOREST, the newest chapter in Rykodisc's Atmosphere Collection series. This series is designed to provide relaxing natural soundscapes as a palliative to the aural pollution of our environnment. These Brazilian recordings are also intended as stimuli for the urgent action needed to protect and preserve the disappearing rain forests by revealing the beauty of these vanishing habitats.
The recordings were collected at two sites in Brazil's Amazon rain forest by conservationist and biological anthropologist Ruth Happel, with the assistance of bio-acoustician Bernie Krause. Happel is the president of Animal Audio Arts, dedicated to raising awareness of the fragility of the natural world.
The Amazon rain forest represents the largest remaining tract of rain forest in the world. Home to over l.5 million species of flora and fauna, with as many as 30 million as yet undiscovered, the tropical rain forest is the most richly diverse ecosystem on earth.
It is also the most endangered. Slash & burn agriculture, cattle ranching, collecting of fuel wood, and the development of plantations are contributing to a rate of deforestation unprecedented on the planet. By the time you listen to one of these four albums, 6,000 acres of rain forest will have been lost.

The Music of Nature: listen.......2006-10-08
These and similar atmospheric recordings seem to have several types of buyer: those who want a sedative or sleep-inducer to calm their agitation or put them to sleep; those who want the hear an anthology of sounds they expected from watching nature shows or reading illustrated nature books; those who have a meditative ear of the music of nature and human ambience, like that of John Cage; and those who want an exotic background for routine daily activities to put themselves in another place, as if living in a hut in the field. I seek no application other than an appreciation of new sounds. I just listen to the virtual volume of space. If you are of like mind, this recording should be a worthy addition to your collection, like those of the splendid Ryko Cape Cod series.
a bath in crazy wildlife.......2003-09-29
with all respect dear fellow review-writers... To me - this is one of the most delightful experiences to dwell in. Lie down, shut the mind and swim in sounds of animals never encountered, sometimes a bird comes close to the microphone while the background carpet of jungle-sound embraces. If you have been to the rainforest or not - it is a strange world which is great to recuperate in and an awe to fall into for the massive of species on the planet and the magic their sounds can produce.
It's froglicious!.......2001-07-18
This is, without a doubt, the best frog album I own. If you like frogs, or mosquitos, or large bulbous things that chirp very loudly, you owe it to yourself to purchase this CD. In retrospect I have no idea why I bought this, and I certainly don't have any idea why this CD exists in the first place, but frog fans will be in frog heaven with this froglicious frog album.
Yee-ouchh! A painfull cacophany of jungle sounds........2000-10-04
I bought this CD because of the impressive-sounding credentials of Ruth Happel, the lady who recorded all the sounds found on the disc. I was searching for a relaxing ambient recording, and I hoped that this would be a genuine, high-quality representation of actual rainforest animals, bugs and birds going about their daily routines of hooting, grunting, buzzing, and singing, accompanied by the gentle pattering of rain on leafy canopies.
Never having been within nine or ten thousand kilometres of an actual rainforest (!) I can't say for sure whether this CD actually does accurately capture the sounds of rainforest life. I can say however that this disc is painfully loud; I'd liken it to Nature's version of a heavy construction site, complete with a regiment of pneumatic drills, the revving of bulldozer engines and the hammer and clang of men, metal and concrete. Ouch!
I've played this disc twice in the six months since I bought it, and each time I've had to struggle to listen to the end, the sounds simply proving too disagreeable to make it worthwile. It isn't what I was looking for. If you're hoping to relax while this CD plays softly in the background you may be disappointed. I would recommend instead a CD called "Rainforest" by Echoes of Nature". In my warped and twisted opinion that particular CD is much more subtle and calming.
Crickets and rain.......2000-07-25
20 minutes of crickets followed by 20 minutes of rain followed by (oh goody) another 20 minutes of crickets. If you listen real hard you can hear a bird or two. Too bad I didn't see the last review before I ordered it!
