    If you are fascinated by percussion like I am, you will surely
    learn to appreciate these very entertaining and well recorded
    performances.

    In fact, several numbers sound overall as quite militaristic,
    in matters of the robust and beautiful accentuation of the
    bass drums, coupled with the parade-style mood of several
    passages.

    Also, the opening number STENKA RAZIN shows a catchy melody,
    that is upbeat, albeit simple.

    The numbers are well balances, never repetitive or boring,
    and is guaranteed to keep the listener entertained for well
    over 45 mins.

    Rather than complain that Glazunov came after the Mighty Handful, but before the great 20th-century Russian composers ... I hear in the Opus 13 "Stenka Razin" echoes of Sibelius - really, a charming musical borderland between the Sibelius of "Finlandia" and Tchaikovsky.

    Come, let us admit it: if Glazunov had been Finnish (where fine composers were rarer than in Russia) and if the motto of this piece were a Finnish hymn rather than the "Song of the Volga Boatmen," this piece would be a staple of American orchestras.

    For the very reason of my great love for the music of Sibelius, I liked "Stenka" from the outset.

    The "Slavic Holiday" is charmingly folksy, in a manner which will recall Dvorák's Slavonic Dances.

    The Solemn Cortege and Fantasy "From Darkness to Light" were written in Tchaikovsky's honor, shortly after that composer's death.

    While I speak of this or that piece as suggesting or recalling this or that other (and better-known) composer, I do not mean that Glazunov's music is merely pale imitation. It is well made, puts the orchestra to splendid use, is eminently an adornment of the concert hall. To hear this disc, is to wonder what sort of conspiracy has kept the music from being performed by American orchestras, whose audiences would take an immediate liking to it.

    The Moscow Symphony Orchestra sounds terrific here; the Mosfilm studio can holds its head high, and this disc can serve as Exhibit A.

    In this disc a good overview of Glazunov is given by an orchestra from Wales. It is very similar to Rimsky-Korsakov symphony 3 and Skazka, but that is no problem for me. Here, the recording is impeccable. Both Rimsky and Glazunov share that Russian and Eastern feel to the music. I own a copie of the music by Yondani Butt and London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Orchestra director Petr Alrichter and Concertgebouw under the direction of Kondrashin. Thbe Kondrashin version is of course the best, but all versions are quite good. Next to this work, I have known Chant du ministrel by Glazunov. That is also good. This composer is great, but not much heard of in the west. Why?

    4 out of 5 stars Glazunov's slavonic sound world well portrayed by Otaka........2002-05-05

    Glazunov's Second Symphony is a rather strong and an assured work. Sometimes referred to as "civilized barbarism" for its bold and spontaneous gestures (and in many ways more daring than customery for this great, if not intriguing composer) this piece absorbs the Borodinian sense of heroics on a grand scale. Written in 1887, along with Stenka Razin and Suite Characteristique, the Symphony symbolized Glazunov's formitable period under a considerable influence of the Russian Five (most particularly of Borodin). The first movement begins with a theme announced by the brass tutti, which, while Russian in character, repeats itself throughout the first two movements. But the following exposition (in allegro) is dramatic and epic in nature. The second movement is rather mystic and in ways melancholic. Its seriousness and its tragic nature is carried onto and throughout the Scherzo third movement, which is among the strongest and direct of Glazunov's scherzi. The finale's optimism is notably attractive here, with some memorable ideas especially at the recapitulation. The movement is longwinded, but it nevertheless gives the piece a greater sense of unity and the closing is as genuine as might be expected. The Symphony is not a masterpiece, but strong and compelling enough that even Sir Arnold Bax transcribed the work for pianoforte. Upon closer examination, echoes of its magically slavic second movement are detectable in the slow movement of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.

    The two other works on this disc include the Mazurka in G major and the Orchestral Fantasy "From Darkness to Light." I really enjoy the Mazurka at every listening, for Glazunov's manipulation of ideas and his orchestration never flag. Chopin, among Glazunov's favorite composers, was an influence behind this work. But it's quite astonishing how skillfully Glazunov could give the piece its strong Russian fervor and color (as he did with Mazurka-Oberek for violin and orchestra written twenty-nine years later in 1917). The vivid, very Russified orchestration gives the work a much greater appeal. The Fantasy, though, is not among Glazunov's stronger works, but the narrative nature of the music holds up well enough.

    Tadaaki Otaka was well acclaimed for his Rachmaninov series under the now defunct Nimbus label, and with good reasons; He has this penchant for detail and dynamics that makes even a lesser work sound more worthwhile than it actually is. It is safe to say that he comes up huge in this CD, with the same BBC National Symphony Orchestra of Wales responding euphoniously to every measure, even with Otaka's tempo changes. What I admire about Otaka is his attention to detail while giving a given piece a sense of spontaniety without sounding ill-disciplined or indifferent. And I find myself in rapport with his tempi, though I think his approach of the Andante movement of the Symphony a shade too swift, especially at the beginning. The fire and enthusiasm are axiomatic in these works (marginally more so than Polyansky & the Russian State Orchestra under Chandos). Although the orchestra lacks the Russian zest and sonority of, say, the USSR Radio and Television Large Symphony Orchestra under Fedoseyev (VoxBox CDX 5118), the commitment and vividness it displays cannot at all be dismissed, even on merit. The recording, though, somewhat lacks bloom, with me reaching for the bass of my stereo only to discover that it's already up.

    So, while I'll place the Fedoseyev recording clearly on a pedestal, with Polyansky's Chandos recording relatively a close runner-up, Otaka's recording is truly worth checking out.

            Ariane's CD is a collection of very original, well-crafted and beautiful songs. It would be impossible to compare her music to another's or categorize it, as each song is a fusion of styles (techno beats, ethereal instrumentation, spoken word, etc.) and the album a mix of very different songs. Ariane's music is intensely personal. Inspired. Definitely worth picking up.

              Out of all of the compilations that I've owned, Soundbombing 1 and 2, Any of the Wu Tang compilations, Lyricist Lounge 1 and the LL that was from Echo unlimited, you get the picture, this is one of the best. All of the tracks are bangin. This had the old Xzibit, who wasn't caught up in the Paparazzi, before Pimp my Ride took control of him and he sold out. Great tracks from Scaramanga, I Born, and Tommy Gibbs, one of Big L's boys. Every track had on point lyrics, and the beats were one you could do a lot of head noddin action. The only complaint I have is I wish KRS would actually rap instead of just do chorus lines. But it was nice to here him chant We up from da underground listen to the sound, pop pop, you get the drift.

              I didn't even know this album exist until yesterday when I found in a 99 cent bin. This album is worth the full price. This has some classic tracks on it. Very education. Very creative...not just an album full of loose air. A definite must listen for those into concious and gritty hip hop.

              this album right shows the potential and range hip-hop music has. cats down with the underground, and cats on the mainstream tip can all knock this without having to skip tracks. even the innerludes is educational and something you need to listen to.
