About the Artist
When I wrote this album Venetian Summer with a triple echo effect, I had the Roland Sound System added to give the listener a feeling and presence of actually being right there with the breaking waves and seabirds flying overhead, as I play my flute along the shores. To get the best listening experience from this CD, would be from a good home surround sound system.

I've always tried to find different types of sounds with a technque away from the main stream styles. I feel that giving the listener an open, warm and peaceful experience of music is relaxing right down to the heart and soul.

This is an amazing collection of Mendelssohn's works! However, the recording is a little on the soft side, so you sort of need to crank your speakers, but all in all, it's a must have for collectors of classical music. Enjoy! Oh, and may I strongly suggest track 3 of disc 4 - it was my whole reason for buying this collection. The entire set is amazing, but that track is worth the price of admission.

This is no doubt to me great piano music played by a great performer. I can't find anything wrong with that. The only problem is the recording quality is very poor, almost intolerable at times. This was recorded in the early through late 70s. I disagree with the previous reviewer, the sound isn't crisp or clear at all, it's very staticy and recorded at a very low volume so you have to crank up the volume creating more static. It's also hard to hear how beautiful the piano really is. To confirm what one of the other reviewers said it does sound as if the piano is underwater. Too bad the recording was not cleaned up to sound at least a little better.

Even at the price I paid ($25)it still may be over priced. It is a great way to get all of his solo piano music but if you want quality skip this and spend the extra money.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Most Complex Music of the Period!.......2005-02-22

Mendelssohn's piano music is an amazing body of work and if you are a classical music fan who has not been exposed to it yet, this is a wonderful way to get his entire piano output. Nimbus has Marvin Jones( winner of the 1968 Myra Hess Award ) performing this for us, recorded in the 1970's. It is in ADD, which is what one would expect from that time, but the sound is very crisp and clear, with the microphone placement not extremely close to the piano, so as to capture the room acoustics. Mr. Jones plays with great brilliance, clarity, and enthusiasm, and, most importantly, he seems to capture the true spirit of Mendelssohn. The set is nicely packaged in two triple cases in a sleeve with a booklet.

For the price, you really can't find a real deal... but in a lot of places, it's obvious why the price is as low as it is. First of all, the recording is awfully muddy and the piano's tone suffers as a result, often sounding more like it's underwater than anything else.

The second thing is that the pianist makes a fair amount of mistakes in the music he is playing, some of them often grating, something that is unacceptable in a studio recording. But I'm still giving it a middle-of-the-road score because the performances aside from the mistakes are often quite good.

      This CD is like being in the ocean breeses without ever leaving home. I enjoy listening to this wonderful flute music while sitting or as I am doing things around the house. The music is very well done and has such a great anointing on it. Thank you, John, for sharing your gift in your music.

      I'm no musician, but I love this music. Although, I may not be able to put it into words as eloquently and as knowledgably as others, I am a painter and believe this music to be of the best quality of art. I would suggest it to anyone, especially someone beginning to appreciate classical piano music. It's given me so much satisfaction to hear something so acceptable to my ears. I feel Walter Gieseking illuminates this music in subtle ways I cannot fully understand but sincerely appreciate.

      Walter Gieseking was gifted of this particular feature. His pianissimos were simply enviable; the slender approach to Mendelssohn works out as ring to finger. All of us know about his supreme eloquence around Debussy performances, but Gieseking underlines the admirable lyricism provided with an enraptured approach, sounding much more eloquent respect the most of pianists who tend to remark glissandos and arpeggios forgetting many times the absolute chamber work character, where elegance, panache and nuance shake hands.

      This is one of the most successful records ever performed, but if you have besides Rena Kyriakou, Guiomar Novaes and Anna Dorffman, you should not have to worry about it, because you would have the cream of the cream versions about this work.

      I own two other recordings of the lyric pieces: one by Gilels on Deutsche Grammophon and one by Sviatoslav Richter on Live Classics. Although I am a huge Richter fan, I actually prefer Gieseking's account. He truly was a brilliant pianist. His account of the Lieder ohne Worte is also quite good. All in all, if you can find this set (I think it may be out of print), buy it immediately. It is well worth the purchase price.

Included on this CD are songs about passion, beauty, love, tragedy, triumph and bittersweet melancholy. Other artists who have performed these pieces on published CD's, such as Ilse von Alpenheim, play them fairly well from a purely technical standpoint, but they haven't captured the emotion needed to evolve the music into story telling 'songs'.
