About the Artist
International Violin Showman and Composer MARTIN LASS has broken the mold of the usual traditional violinist. His classical beginnings - which included playing as principal and soloist with orchestras such as the Sydney Symphony and Australian Chamber Orchestra - led to the creation of a solo career that spans all kinds of music. He presents modern interpretations of such greats as Beethoven and Vivaldi alongside the jazz of Brubeck and Ellington, the Gypsy music of Eastern Europe, the world's great Love Songs, Broadway Showtunes, and his own Original Compositions - even adding the odd Bluegrass fiddle tune to produce a cavalcade of listening pleasure.

An energetic showman, he plays the fiddle as if it were both an athletic feat and an artistic creation. Martin believes that the violin - being the closest instrument to the human voice - is capable of expressing the full range of emotions through all styles of music. He also feels that audiences want to be entertained, captivated, transported, enthralled and wooed on the wings of music - and that he is the man to do it!

Born in Chicago, USA, Martin's interest in the violin began at the age of 8, when he saw world famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin on television. Menuhin became Martin's earliest idol. Furthermore, Martin's father instilled in him an appreciation of all styles of music from classical to jazz to country to pop, with Martin's mother's reputed gypsy background adding to the spice of his musical upbringing. Martin's family moved to Australia when he was eleven, and by his early twenties he was already an accomplished classical musician.

During this time, responding to a brazen dare (the exact details of which will never be released!), Martin appeared on a nationally televised talent show - Australia's equivalent to Starsearch. He was like a 19th century romantic figure, with flowing hair, frock coat and rapier flourishes of the bow. He blitzed all opposition, winning everything and receiving standing ovations from the judges! Television hosts fell over themselves to invite him on their programs.

The result? From second fiddle in an orchestra, Martin quickly became one of Australia's most sought after popular entertainers. Clever television commercials immediately attracted attention and built audiences, blazing fresh trails with the violin. Martin appeared on every major Australian TV show - making over 200 television appearances. He released 10 CD recordings - including a Gold Record, and an Australian Grammy nomination - , toured Australia with his band and performed alongside many distinguished international names in concert.

Taking his next career step, Martin has recently relocated to New York, where he is now furthering his career as a performer, composer and writer, and garnering rave reviews from the press.

Martin's albums are available nationally through GALACTIC MUSIC INC, and are featured in all Borders stores, amongst others. His new album "SONNET", featuring his own original music, is due for release across the USA in August. He is working constantly around the world, opening and exploring new markets and new audiences, and taking his magic to people of all cultures, countries and ages.

Rockabilly Swing.......2006-05-17

This is the best "Texas" Country performer and signer. Aaron Watson combines hillbilly rock or "rockabilly" with some western swing that just makes you want to get up and dance. This album is my favorite of Aaron Watsons because he has a good variety of upbeat fun songs and heatbreaker waltzes. So now Im back to listen to Aaron Watson's cd, and Im going to "Shutupanddance".

Real-deal country . . ........2004-11-08

Aaron Watson is the real deal, singing honky tonk, rockabilly and western swing like he really means it. His music is pure Austin, TX, and Nashville be danged. The upbeat opener sets the tone for the whole set, "I Don't Want You to Go (But I Need You to Leave)". The humorous lyrics capture the dilemma of a man attached to a woman he can't handle.

Most of the songs are about relationships in one stage of difficulty or another. A favorite is the guilt-laden waltz "Notel Motel." Another is the regretful "Wish I Could Say I'd Been Drinking." The real heart breakers are the road song, "Lonely Lubbock Lights," and the divorced man's lament, "Off the Record." A comic song of desire over reason is the wry "Wrangler Butts," the only song I've ever heard in praise of male posteriors in a particular brand of jeans.

There's lots more, including a great western swing song "Something With a Swing To It" and a darkly soulful song that comes close to social protest, "Kentucky Coal Miner's Prayer." Watson writes his own material and for a young performer has a well developed talent. You can dance to his songs, like he says, but it's hard to shut up when you know enough of the words to sing along.

Real Country Music.......2003-07-11

Aaron and his band make real country music. He writes it all. The single "Off The Record" is awesome!!! You gotta have this CD. They also have the best drummer in the music business.

The first time I saw Aaron Watson and the Orphans of the Brazos, he was opening up for Roger Creager in my hometown. Aaron has been back 3 times since then, and I haven't missed a show! I love good country music (NOT the pop crap that passes for country all to often recently), and this music is some of the best country I've ever heard. Aaron's voice and songwriting ability AMAZE me, and the rest of his band is a huge pool of talent as well. [go Haystack!] Definately buy this!

William Orbit's Pieces in a Modern Style is an ambient album that rejigs 11 works by classical composers in a particularly tacky fashion. Even though Orbit has proved his mettle as an innovative and exciting producer for others--Blur's 13 and Madonna's Ray of Light--this is an ungainly meeting of the sublime and the absurd that, frankly, doesn't work. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," Ludwig van Beethoven's "Triple Concerto," Henryk Gorecki's "Piece in the Old Style I," and Antonio Vivaldi's "L'Inverno" are four that unfortunately meet their maker in a crude pileup of flat, belching synths and wallpaper flourishes. If he had combined live instrumentation with a playful reverence for the arcane glories of the past, perhaps he could have managed to make reality out of that most elusive of notions: experimental music that actually sells. However, Orbit fails to do anything more than resemble a second-rate Vangelis. --Maxine Kabuubi

Outstanding. A classic........2007-06-06

I have been working in electronic music for almost 20 years years. I have a massive library of music for almost any reason, mood and itch. Tonight, I am taking the five minutes to stop and write how unique, amazing and consistently refreshing this album is everytime I go back to it since the day it was released.

Highly Melodic, very electronic and overall lacking the percussive elements most have come to know when listening to Orbit.

Much more sophisticated than the average listener might appreciate.Consider it a staple for anyone serious about electronic music.

I believe anyone rating this poorly is looking for a pop appeal that you just won't find here, thankfully.

Pay not attention to the crab behind the curtain.......2006-06-22

I don't know who Maxine Kubabi is. She's certainly untitled to her opinion. An "ungainly meeting of the sublime and the absurd?" What a sublimely empty and inadequate statement.

You have to know something about a genre before you can be an effective critic inside it. You should be able to specify why you don't like something in some detail, rather than resort to crabby nebulousities ... that's greasy kid stuff.

What Orbit has done is to realize some old, familiar works in an electronic medium, using smooth and musical strokes. He's taken many big chances. Some of them worked out well, others not as well as one might hope. But he deserves kudos for taking a risk and for making some of it work.

Why would anyone who *likes* electronic music complain that it doesn't have live instrumentation? That's like complaining that jazz has no rock and roll in it. "Reverence"? "Second rate Vangelis"? so: you were disappointed that Orbit didn't create more of the kind of schmaltz you personally like. Yanni, anyone?

For those who actually like electronic music, and like Beethoven's Opus 132, please, give that track a listen. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have been a fan William Orbit since Water from a vine leaf and I have to admit while this ins't exactly a electronica per se it is still amazing to see what he has done with our classics. The listening experience depends solely on the listener. More ambient than anything else I have heard though.

If you're looking for something to pop in late at night to dance to...this is not the album. This album is eery and some of it is painful. It's not full of upbeat electronics like originally thought it would be. But, I love it. It's great to listen to while just thinking...relaxing...reading...it's beautiful.

Pieces in a peaceful style........2005-11-28

Being a fan of ambient and electronica for some time, I decided to give this a try. I can understand how some may simply hear this as a cheesy reworking of the classics, just a man and his keyboard, but it's really much deeper than that if you just sit and listen. I suggest not comparing to the originals as much as enjoying what these pieces are themselves. A few tracks do lag, and there are quiet spots, but as a whole I find "Pieces In A Modern Style" to be almost hypnotic, and as I said in my review title, rather peaceful. The tracks I prefer the most are "Adiago For Strings", "Cavalleria Rusticana: Intermezzo", "L'Inverno", and the music-box sounding "Triple Concerto". However the others are fine as well. I say, if you think you might like this, you probably will. It's well worth the used price if nothing else.

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08

Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline,candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.

If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.

The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Polished Texas country.......2004-10-04

Watson's third full-length is an impressively confident album of Texas country, honky-tonk and swing. The thirteen original songs offer up both bona-fide twang (spurred along by producer Ray Benson) and more polished radio-ready crossover-pop. Watson's praise of his roots can seem a might self-conscious, but his joy as a country singer creates the sort of infectious likeability upon which George Strait's built a career.

Watson's songs include weepers ("What She Don't Know"), upbeat two-steppers ("If You're Not in Love"), and Western Swing ("Honky Tonkin' Around Texas"). He edges into pop with rockers like "Reckless," and rekindles the country-pop balladry of early Garth Brooks and Clint Black with "Mackenzie Park." It's a delicate balance, crossing over to a broader palette without losing one's roots, and Watson does so successfully.

Willie Nelson trades verses on the title tale of fading glory, and Dale Watson adds fuel to the trucking canon with "Diesel Driving Daddy." Amidst this Texas star-power, Aaron Watson remains the focal point, singing his finely crafted songs with enthusiasm and spirited tradition.

I didn't think you could outdo Shut Up and Dance....but you did!! This CD is so fun and lively and so easy to listen to. Makes me want to dance. Your music just keeps getting better and better.

Amazing! This album even tops Shutup and Dance, which was one of my favorite CDs. I didn't think Aaron's stuff could get any better, but it did. So many fun and awesome songs. You know you're a hit when Willie Nelson records with you. Go out and buy this album and buy Shutup and Dance if you don't already have it. Aaron is keeping country at its roots. I love this music. Way to go Aaron, you managed to top a great album!

Honky Tonkin' Round Texas.......2004-04-05

WOW!!! Aaron Watson blows me away again! I first heard some of his stuff on Lone Star Saturday Night and immediately went out and bought Shutupanddance, his second album. I couldn't wait until he released his third album,"The Honky Tonk Kid." It was more than worth the wait! This music is what country music ought to be! It doesn't take much to picture yourself back at Floore's Country Store or Gruene Hall listening to Asleep at the Wheel and Aaron honky tonk around Texas or as Aaron and Willie sing about a honky tonk kid. Go out and buy this album and soon you'll be sippin a Lone Star in Gruene Texas!

Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas May

Ned Rorem is the last survivor, since the death of Virgil Thompson, of the long reach that Paris exerted over a generation of American expatriate composers, many of whom drifted overseas between the wars to study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Rorem's songs sometimes have American folk roots, but mostly he writes chansons, and like their French counterparts, his are crystalline, spare, sophisticated, and precisely defined emotionally.

If he were more tlaneted he might have wirtten masterpieces, but mostly this sounds like Samuel Barber on skim milk. Rorem often sets minor, if not trivial poetry. His lyrical gift is modest. But there's no doubt that he has been neglected, largely because of his stubbornly tonal conservatism, and now that tonality is repsectable again, he is being accorded last-minute honors. I'm glad for him, and his best work, which consists of his multi-volume memoirs, has added much to American culture. But even when skillfully sung by an artist of the caliber of Susan Graham, a hour's worth of Rorem's tiny jewel-like chansons is about twice too much at one sitting.

wonderful perforance of excellent songs.......2005-01-20

I'm a neophyte to Ned Rorem's work. To be honest I purchased this CD because I really enjoy listening to Susan Graham. Although I really love hearing Ms. Graham's opera performances, I find it refreshing to hear her singing something in English. I also appreciate how she's taken time to perform something other than opera. Susan Graham's performance of Ned Rorem's songs has me seeking out other performances of his work.

Classic Rorem Songs!.......2004-05-18

Susan Graham has a remarkable mezzo voice and sings Rorem as though she really is a sounding board for the composer. Kudos to her and this CD comes highly recommended to newbies to Rorem songs and those many die-hard fans!

Come To Pop, Baby!.......2004-03-12

Recently, I heard Susan Graham on Garrison Keillor's "Prarie Home Companion" show. Wow! I didn't know who she was, but she had so much humour, verve and style while singing some show tunes, and that incredible voice. I rushed to amazon but all the English language songs I could find seemed to be on this album of Ned Rorem music. Well, whatever the weight lieder songs carry for the Germans, it seems that art songs in English mean songs you can't snap your fingers to, can't slap out a beat to and would never, ever, sing with your friends. I know, I know, I'm a Philistine, but please, Ms. Graham, give us an album of American popular classics, show tunes and the like. When I listened to you on Mr. Keillor's show, if I had been a bell, I'd have been ringing too! You are simply great. Don't let the classical music fans have all the fun. Throw a little our way too. Pretty please.

Worthy indeed - a gem.......2002-08-27

I cannot disagree with "A Music Fan"'s panning of this CD. Having first purchased the Hearing CD which he/she references, I reached the conclusion that Rorem's music was too knotty and "20th century" for repeated listenings and enjoyment. This CD with Susan Graham completely reversed my opinion. The songs are indeed chosen to be accessible, but they are much more than that. They are, simply stated, lovely. This is a disc I will play again and again, and has caused me to investigate many other Rorem CDs. I just came on line to buy it as a gift for a friend. Rorem deserves his due, and this disc gives it to him.

One of my Favorite CDs.......2004-02-19

In this wonderful collection of Shakespeare settings, Mr. Rolfe-Johnson creates a magical atmosphere using his unbelievable musicality and gorgeous, gorgeous voice! The songs themselves range from the sweet and charming "No more Dams!" to the heavenly interpretation of "She Never Told Her Love", but for me the high point of the whole CD is his incredible performance of the early version of Vaughan Willams' "Orpheus with his Lute"...this song alone is worth the price of the album! Mr. Rolfe Johnson is truly one of the worlds most exquisite tenors! A must have for every fan of English Song!

Frank Martin was arguably Switzerland's greatest composer. His shimmering Mass for Double Choir, completed in 1926 as "an affair between God and himself," is one of the finest settings of the twentieth century, yet it had to wait forty-one years to be shared with others in its first performance. This collection of his choral music also includes his cantata for Switzerland's national day (August 1), and the Ode to Music, along with some charming part-songs. Eclectic and technically superb, these pieces display a style that is serenly individual.

Reissue of 2 Major & 9 'Minor' Martin Pieces.......2005-05-08

This is a reissue of a 1996 Collins Classics CD. Here's what I said about that disc, slightly updated:
With the exception of the enormously popular Mass for Unaccompanied Double Choir (1922/26) & the oft-recorded English-language Songs of Ariel (1950) to texts from Shakespeare, Frank Martin's most significant choral music is found in his 4 large-scale oratorios: In Terra Pax (1944), Golgotha (1945-8), Le Mystere de la Nativite (1957-9) & the Requiem (1970-1). This CD gathers together some of the shorter pieces from throughout his career, together with the Mass & Ariel Songs. Some of the performances come off better than others, largely because the various works were written for very different resources. The Sixteen do very well in the challenging 5 Songs of Ariel, composed for the professional Netherlands Chamber Choir; in the 2 occasional pieces, the Cantata for August 1st (1941) & the Ode to Music (1961), one wants more voices & more sheer enthusiasm. Likewise, the charming little folk-like songs would probably carry more conviction with amateur forces - or at least French-speaking ones. (The French throughout is carefully coached but clearly not native.) One programing error: The settings of the Ronsard Ode and Sonnet, sung here in reverse order & interleaved with other songs, were previously thought to date from 1931; they actually come from 1912, & when played together in the right order are far more effective. Overall, I'd recommend this disc primarily to those who already enjoy Martin's music & want to hear the 9 rarer pieces not otherwise available on CD. If you're interested primarily in the Mass & the Songs of Ariel, consider 2 recent CDs, both excellent: On Harmonia Mundi [HMC 901834], Daniel Reuss leads the RIAS-Kammerchor in a coupling with 2 fine pieces by Messiaen - an outstanding release. For an all-Martin program, hunt down Q Disc [Q 97056], where the Netherlands Chamber Choir under Tonu Kaljuste adds an important piece, Et la vie l'emporta (1974), Martin's final composition, a luminous & moving chamber cantata.

Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.
