Album Description

Produced by the legendary Johnny Rivers himself, the 36-song, two-CD set Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006 is the most comprehensive collection of his music ever released. The anthology features 19 of his chart hits, including 15 hard-to-find tracks released on his own label. This set also features two brand-new recordings.

Johnny Rivers vaulted to worldwide fame during the height of Beatlemania, when he released a series of albums recorded at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go, all featuring hard-charging versions of rock Â'nÂ' roll standards. In the late Â'60s, he changed direction with the self-penned #1 hit, Â"Poor Side Of Town,Â" a soulful ballad that he soon followed up with another hit in a similar vein, Â"Summer Rain.Â" In the Â'70s he returned to his rockinÂ' roots and over the next 30 years released album after album of vibrant rock Â'nÂ' roll. Secret Agent Man is the definitive collection from this legendary artist.

This is a great conversion from vinyl to CD and remastered to sound just great. My fav is 'Sugar Pie Honey Bunch' and missed not being able to play it occasionally while on record. There are a few new songs too that I hadn't heard before. Good deal. Great 'Johnny Rivers History' booklet comes with the interesting package design.

I am very pleased. A very complete collection of his work. Good sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars Career-spanning but not "ultimate".......2007-04-05

After years of commercial invisibility, in 1964 Johnny Rivers' energetic, unpretentious, yet solidly crafted studio-enhanced live recordings blasted onto the charts offering a refreshing, all-American alternative to the onslaught of British invasion music. After several chart successes in the "Whiskey-A-Go-Go" vein, Rivers changed musical direction and topped the charts with his self-penned "Poor Side of Town". Next came a pair of phenomenally successful covers of Motown songs, "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Tracks of My Tears". For another ten years Rivers stretched from bluesy rock to lush balladry with two more songs making the top ten, keeping Rivers on the radar of the fickle music-buying public into the late '70's. All told, Rivers saw nearly 30 of his tunes make it into the top-100. With this legacy of music, anthologizing his recordings is no small undertaking. Two decades ago, Rhino did a respectable job with its two-disc collection that has held up over the years. Shout records now offers a new alternative in this "ultimate anthology". While this piece does delve further into Rivers' more recent recordings and offers two previously unreleased songs, it does this at a price. While most of his top-40 songs are included here, nearly a third of Rivers' charting singles are absent. Among those omissions, and though only a minor hit single, "Ashes and Sand" from 1977 continues to evade reissue on CD, somewhat surprising in that it was originally issued on Rivers' own Soul City label. While 18 tracks on a disc may seem to be generous enough, for an "anthology", ratcheting the count up to 24 would have allowed the inclusion of many of the missing singles and would have better justified the claim to being "ultimate". So, down one star for this perceived "stinginess". Otherwise, this set rates highly for the packaging, 20-page liner notes booklet and overall sound quality. Choosing between this and the Rhino one comes down to whether you're looking for more of Rivers' classic single records, in which case the Rhino set wins hands down, or the inclusion of Rivers' more contemporary work served only by this Shout/Soul City collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rivers Fine Sound Rolls Over Four Decades.......2007-03-06

This is a wonderful collection from an artist who should have been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame years ago. The intelligence, energy and quiet integrity of the music of Johnny Rivers has never been clearer than on this career-spanning collection. The Hall of Fame can have the Ramones and Sex Pistols. I'll take these two discs to my desert island.

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favour Get This CD.......2007-02-24

The excellent sound quality on this cd was a revelation especially when the songs date back to 1964. My previous Johnny Rivers compilation cd sounded very thin. This is not the case with "Secret Agent Man - The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006".

You forget just how many hit records Johnny Rivers had until you have them all on a cd like this. His music is very much in the feel good mode and this disc has seldom been out of my player since it arrived. If you are a Johnny Rivers fan or simply like good music this cd is highly recommended.

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music, rich with imagery and color..............2007-05-13

I was honestly surprised how underrated and underappreciated JOURNEY THROUGH THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS was, upon first release in 1979. Stevie Wonder, who received glowing reviews for his classic SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, was riding the high of well-deserved positive musical critiques, and veered off in a new, innovative direction that he hadn't explored until PLANTS.

JOURNEY THROUGH THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS was music composed for a documentary (of the same name) based on what was originally a very engrossing book. The film celebrated and explored the "secret" world of plants, their mating habits, interactions and cycles in a way that was previously unexamined in quite the same way in nature films and on public television. This film sounded fascinating.....unfortunately, it was unreleased to the general public, and remains unreleased today. Except for the two weeks it was in the theatres, and its rare appearances at smaller film theaters, it remains unknown and impossible to find. Through this beautiful album, we are transported to that secret world. Wonder's innovative and beautiful attention to detail in his distinctive percussive numbers, that incorporate African-derived rhythms, djembe drum and chants in songs like "Kesse Ye Lolo De Ye" (on disc 2), Japanese-inspired melodies ("Ai No Sono") and synthesized dance numbers, illustrating the journey and (even) social life of the plant ("Power Flower" and "A Seed's A Star/Tree Medley") are just beautiful. A song particularly worthy of more appreciation and airplay is the beautiful and haunting "Come Back As A Flower" (Stevie's duet with Syreeta Wright), and sounds like a life affirming anthem, promoting love, peace and environmental awareness.

The lyrics in many of these songs are rich with double meaning, alluding not only to the environment, the life cycles of plants ("Black Orchid" and "The Secret Life of Plants"), but also to the African/African-American experience in the world. The lyrics make reference to appropriation, forceable possession and exploitation. I truly don't think the critics were ready for Stevie, when he took on such strong subjects. It's surprising to me, because in SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, he sang about ghetto life, growing up and the like and the album was received far differently. I only hope that we one day have the privilege of seeing THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS, the documentary that this music was inspired by. It couldn't come at a better time. What's more, the book is definitely overdue for a reissue. Don't overlook this beautiful album! It's poetry set to music.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I remember.......2007-03-24

I had this on LP decades ago, and have been looking for the CD set (or MP3/AAC) for years. I am so happy to have found it. The sound is so much clearer on CD--even after all these years. As for content, I didn't buy it for "Send Her Your Love"... you can get that cut anywhere. I got the set for "Outside My Window" and "Come Back as a Flower". Both have such clarity. You can hear the fingers stick to the accoustic guitar strings between chord changes, and the vocalist breathe.

3 out of 5 stars A movie soundtrack........2007-01-28

This was meant to be a movie soundtrack, not a regular album. Stevie isn't trying to increase his melodies-per-square-inch count here, but HAS written some marvelous music, spread across 4 sides of vinyl. There is some uptempo music, and some pretty low key stuff as well, but for a movie you NEED the low key, his music obviously can't be the focus all the time but simply something nice in the background. This isn't necessarily an album to bring out for a party, but playing on your car stereo as you patiently, carefully pick your way through a wintery drive. There is some great music on here, I don't care much for the Chinese and Indian influenced songs especially "Voyage to India", "Ai No Sono", but if something interesting was going on onscreen, you'd hardly notice.

The overall themes, summarized at the start and end, are pleasant enough. Race Babbling is an interesting funk/disco experiment (how often does disco get to be experimental?) Send One Your Love is a nice ballad along Stevie's usual lines, the instrumental version of it is just as nice as the one with a vocal. Flower Power is a nice bit of soft R&B, hinting the direction he was heading. My favorite songs are 'Outside My Window' with a very catchy singalong chorus, the spooky, weird, solemn instrumental "Eccliastes", and the "Seed's a Star" medley, these would have been good picks for an album of pop songs. "Black Orchid" is pleasant, but sounds to me like a somewhat inferior rewrite of "I Believe When I Fall In Love" (especially in the verses with his voice doing the big melodic jumps), "Power Flower" is an acceptable song with nice harmonies. "Venus and Flytrap" is another rehash of the themes in this album, with interesting arrangement.

I think you could have taken the best from this album and from his next, "Hotter Than July" and come up with an album of 10 songs that stood with his best works (i.e. everything from 1971 to 1976). People don't realize that Stevie Wonder is also an ordinary person whose tastes and motivations change over the years - do you listen to exactly the same music now that you did ten years ago? For this album, he got to experiment and try things out, not caring if it was a hit or not. I mean, when you have millions of dollars, probably scoring the next big hit is a lot less pressing then when you're living dirt-poor, hoping for a breakthrough. So he gets to indulge himself here, sometimes it's really good, and even when it's not, it's far from 'terrible'.

5 out of 5 stars Weirdly great!.......2006-10-01

I remember waiting for this album to hit the UK stores after just loving "Songs in the Key of Life". Quite a surprise, but a few plays later I was hooked. This soundtrack is more like a journey, serenading us with some of the most beautiful ballads and instrumentals Mr. Wonder has recorded (IMHO).

"Come back as a Flower" still gives me goose-bumps, "Same old Story", the title track and "Black Orchid" are stand-outs.

At the time, critics panned this work, but almost 30yrs later, things have changed. This title is well worth tracking down or splashing out for an import. There are still some new ones out there!!

5 out of 5 stars Criminally Overlooking, This album is Worth a Critical Reassessment..........2006-06-27

Between the period of 1971 - 1976, few could argue that brilliance of Stevie Wonders musical output. A period that saw such groundbreaking releases such as: "Talking Book", "Innervisions", "Fulfillingness' First Finale", "Songs in the Key of Life"....all albums that took driving funk & Motown Soul, and mixed them with warm keyboards, and lyrical content that touched upon: Politics, Love, Social injustice, Joyous Good times, and religion, and self-belief....to conquering effect. Which is what made this release of after 1976's "Songs in the key of Life", all the more curious and bizarre. Because instead of following on, from the ambitious wide-ranging arrangements, exuberant synthesizer, and tightly sequenced funk of "Songs in the key of life". Stevie instead bucked all current convention, and released this...a meditative mostly instrumental album of quietly intimate sounds, Precious moods, and reflective arrangements. Gone were the finger-pointing political statements, Biting Funk, and celebratory grooves. This was an album that was a decidedly much softer proposition, with an overall sound, that was considered, too intimate and inward-looking to suggest Radio air-play, and a cycle of loosely themed (semi-linked) songs, that were too downtempo, to be really considered hit single material (although "Send One Your Love" and "Outside My Window", were released as singles). What followed was mass confusion, on the radio/Critics part....with most, simply baffled by Stevie's musical direction, and large-scale indifference on the part of consumers. And so, this left the album, largely ignored by the general public, and quickly lead to Stevie reverting back to type, with 1980's upbeat soul/funk workout "hotter than July".

Looking back on "Journey through the secret life of Plants", and giving the album a much need re-evaluation, it's not hard to see why, it was so off-handedly dismissed on its release. This was such an unusual release from what had gone before, it's a soundtrack to a film (that may or may not have been released) and at the time it was like throwing a musical `Curve-ball', to the record buying public. But, that doesn't mean that it deserved to be largely passed over. No, in fact it's quite the opposite....looking at this album now, long after his most recognised work, has become familiar to us all, highlights what (with hindsight), is a massive mistake on the critics/buying public. What was tight and edgy in his previous albums, has become a softer, more reflective sombre mood, the instruments take the centre stage here, with the few vocals tracks that are contained throughout the album, mostly limited to assisting the instrumentals (rather than being at the forefront). "Voyage to India" is probably closest to a regular Stevie track, "Ai No, Sono" features a lovely children choir, and "Power Flower" has the vocal pushed firmly into the background, and sounds like a vocal instrument that complements the instrumentals. I defy anyone to not be moved by the sheer elegance of the arrangements, the contemplative mood, and gentle lush keyboard work, that runs throughout this album. For a rough idea of what to expect, if you are familiar with the track "You've got it bad, Girl" from Stevie's "Talking book" album, well imagine the warm electronic arrangements, sentimental template, and innocent conception of low key R&B, without the vocals. Then that will give you a rough idea of what to expect. I don't know if it's because it's a (mostly) instrumental soundtrack album, but it sounds like Stevie worked long and hard to get these arrangements, up to such a highly proficient level. This is probably because, seeing as this music would be judged on a purely musical level (with no lyrics, as such to fall back on). That this release really had to be able to stand up on its own, without Stevie's lyrics to fall back on, and it is arguably some of the most gorgeously expressive (instrumental) music that Stevie has committed to record. With such stylistic exercises in composition, and a beautifully subtle kaleidoscope of contrasting textures, this is a unique, and peerlessly melodic sounding record, that stands on its own, as something vastly different, from anything that Stevie had attempted before (and probably one, of the reasons, for its commercial failure). But looking back on the album some twenty odd years on, it's a truly remarkable sounding record that, rewards each listen with little sounds and glistening moods, it's a soundtrack that sounds unlike anything else (although how well suited to the film, is hard to ascertain, as nobody seems to have seen the film). And if that sounds like something you'd want to listen to, they you really owe it to yourself, to give this a listen. Sure!!...there will be those that think this album is a pointless exercise, like listening to a "Marvin Gaye" album minus his singing. But it'd take a cold, cold heart not to acknowledge that Artistically, Stevie has taken the bold step of creating something that pushed his music into an entirely new (although unsuccessfully commercial) direction. And listening to it today, without having judged it, after having come off the back of an incredible run of albums, this is one of those albums that will rope in new fans, that are prepared to put any preconceptions to one side and meet the music on its own terms (rather than what came before it), and although it probably can't quite stand up as well as his peak-period albums, this is arguably, deserving of almost as much recognition of any of Stevie's other landmark releases.

Folks, I just received my disc from England today (the cover is different!). This disc is one of the best collections that I've listened to in recent memory. The value is outstanding for what you get! The shortest song on the disk clicks in at 4:04. No "short" songs are on this disc. Now, go forth and get your copy of this disc while you can (before they're gone!) Five stars for this collection...

I originally bought this on cassette back in the early 80s when it came out. It sounded fantastic then and even better now. There isn't a single bad track on the whole album. My favorites are "Rio De Janeiro Blue" and "Rainy Nights in Georgia". I agree with all the other reviewers that she has one of the purest voices in the industry.

In a way, it's a shame that Luther Vandross' Songs, his 1994 album of other people's hits, became the biggest hit of his career, for it obscured one of his greatest talents: songwriting. The best soul singer of the '80s is back with Your Secret Love, his first album of original, non-Christmas songs since 1993's Never Let Me Go. He hasn't lost his knack for big, emotional melodies and for scenarios that find happiness tantalizingly close, but still out of reach. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My first Luther Vandross cd.......2007-06-10

One Saturday, I had to made a choice between 2 cds in the record shop. It would be either 'Never let me go' or 'Your secret love'. I did not know any of the two, so, Mike (the shop manager and personal friend) let me listen to bits of all tracks from both until I made my decision. It couldn't be 'Never let me go' because I did not like the way it sounded. I was not into upbeat or mid tempo songs.. I did not think it really suited Luther Vandross' style, although I love 'Power of Love/Love power' to date, and still think of it as a powerful track to dance to. So I opted for the ballad-loaded 'Your secret love'. It was too compelling for me not to make this choice, and I would lie if I said I ever regretted my choice.

That afternoon, I was the proud owner of my first cd by the Master.
Of course, his singing and I were old quite old friends. I owned several of his recordings on vinyl, but the record player was not in good shape any more.. Since then, I compensated by owning several 'collection' and 'best of' cds..

That was quite a long time ago, and since then, I have had the time to appreciate 'Your secret love'. The cd as a whole is really good contemporary music, and the ballads are wonderful, all of them winning my heart, and feel ever-new at every listening.
'It's hard for me to say' is my favourite song on the cd because the lyrics meant a lot to me at the time, but, above everything else, that powerful soul voice swept me off my feet. The whole album in fact is still a pleasant treat whenever I give it an attentive listening, which still is quite often. The epic ballad 'Crazy Love' still stops the world from revolving around me as the intense singing catches hold of me.. Well, as does the rest of the songs in this album. How could it be otherwise?

It was no secret for anyone who had an ear for music that Luther Vandross had the one of the best voice of the last decades, if not the best. But more than that was his incredible ability to mold with his unique velvet voice every ordinary word into a guilty pleasure for our senses. Did the man sing at home instead of talk? Abilities such as his were unique indeed, as he proved by giving new life to the songs he covered, and most importantly, by turning all his songs into his precious legacy to the world of music.
Sometimes, I think about him, but I guess I can't even wonder what it must have felt like for him knowing how well he could sing. Even now, it feels like it was too easy for him.. His own voice was his masterpiece, the very essence that would give birth to his everlasting songs.

Luther Vandross, wherever you are today, you will always be missed. And I shall always secretly wish I were you.

4 out of 5 stars Luther's return to form.......2004-08-03

This was Luther's first album of all-new material since 1993's underrated NEVER LET ME GO, and it's another successful recording that hit #9 on the Hot 200 and went Platinum in sales. YOUR SECRET LOVE was recorded and released right around the same time that Luther was ending his 15 year venture with Epic/Sony, which may account for bittersweet tone that runs throughout the entire disc. While it's definitely a bit ballad-heavy, YOUR SECRET LOVR finds Luther finally leaving behind techno-heavy trappings that dated portions of THE POWER OF LOVE and NEVER LET ME GO and returning to sound that made much of his earlier work so timeless.

There is some terrific material here, especially the yearning title track (#52 Pop, #5 R&B) and the old-fashioned "I Can Make It Better" (#80 Pop, #15 R&B) - both of which were justifiable single releases. "Love Don't Love You," "Hard For Me To Say," and "This Time I'm Right" are just as good, and the attempted hip hop crossover "I Can't Wait No Longer" works far better than it should. Interestingly, "Crazy Love" and "Too Proud To Beg" are not covers of the songs performed, respectively, by Van Morrison and the Temptations, but are well-written, original compositions that are impeccably performed and produced.

I wouldn't be surprised if the two actual cover songs, "Knocks Me Off My Feet" and "Goin' Out of My Head," were leftovers from the Songs sessions. However, that's not a complaint as both tracks are standouts - especially "Knocks Me Off My Feet," which will make you wish Luther would record an entire album of Stevie Wonder's material. Really, the only songs that miss the boat with me are the dragging "Nobody To Love" (which suffers from an ineffective hook) and the lame duet "Whether or Not the World Gets Better" (which features some of his lamest lyrics and Lisa Fischer doing a bad Mariah impression), however even these songs remain tolerable. During his 15 years with Sony Luther rarely released an album that wasn't a solid effort, and YOUR SECRET LOVE is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars On top form..........2004-05-27

In 1994 Luther's album of covers `Songs' saved him from falling off the map. With his 1996 follow up `Your Secret Love', the big man returns with a set of mostly chilled love songs that ride over Marcus Millers smooth & slick grooves nicely. Like `Songs', the choice of material showcases his full vocal range, two of the highlights being the two singles `I Can Make It Better' and the title track. LV checks one of his heroes again with an impressive cover of Stevie Wonders classic `Knocks Me Off My Feet', and `Lets Do This' hooks him up with Pepa for a dance floor number with a hip hop beat that works surprisingly well. I guess Luther was trying to cover all bases, but the other numbers are basically a collection of sweet, understated ballads. The closing `Goin' Out Of My Head' is a beautiful heartfelt song that steals the show with its dramatic ending & yes I really dig the wanting someone who doesn't even know you exist theme.

Overall this is an impressive work from my man, an elegant album kind of in the Quiet Storm vein, playable with all moods and will easily please fans of `Songs' or just R&B in general.

4 out of 5 stars LUTHER BACK ON FORM.......2002-03-03

this 1996 album undid most of the damage from 1993s horrible NEVER LET ME GO. unlike that album, the production on YOUR SECRET LOVE is top notch, and hes singing better than he has in years.

this is a soft, romantic album, with luther seeming happy and content, and it works in late night scenarios if you know what i mean. the higlights are the last 2 songs, "goin out of my head" and "knocks me off my feet", which are incredible. there are many other great songs present here too, including the title track.

the only blip is the "lets do this" track, with a poor female rapper, this is out of place and breaks up the flow of the cd.

but overall this is by far one of luthers most enjoyable albums.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Comeback.......2007-05-05

THis album has steadily gotten 5 star reviews since it came out for a reason. It is a terrific rock album by one of the best rockers ever. Erics' singing is as great as it ever was. He writes great human interest stories in his songs, and the band is fantastic. I have the old Eric Burden albums. Great stuff, but always had some duds on em. This album is super all the way thru. If you like Eric at all, this is a must buy, as it is definately one of the best albums he ever made. You get hard rockers, ballads, and some blues& boogie. Great variation and a well thought out comeback. His songwriting is better than ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Burdon disc of the past 20 years.......2007-02-26

Much as others have said... interesting variety, solid production. I think his voice is much stronger here than on other releases of the past two decades.

5 out of 5 stars Truely cool.......2006-10-07

Eric Burdon is one of the most underappreciated artists of his time. This CD was put out in 2004 and Eric's voice can still growl and belt out tunes better than guys 1/2 his age. There are some truely cool tunes on this CD. Track 5 - Factory girl is blues tune with Celtic tint - Burdons voice is haunting as it's complemented by the Uillean Pipes and Irish whistle -superb! Track 2 - Motorcycle Girl is the just plain good - and others - Highway 62, Over the Border - all excellent.

Eric Burdon is a storyteller - he's been recounting stories in his music since the 60's and this talent is undiminished. I can listen these songs for hours.

Listening to his stories on this CD makes me wonder just what kind of journey his life has been for him to write such thought provoking and moving tunes.

This CD is a joy to listen to and a trip to take - enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Look, there isn't much to say........2006-06-24

Get this recording and listen to it four times. I guarantee at that point you will be addicted. It has it all and then some. A man of 63 singing like this? Just spectacular. I love Mick, but with all due respect (and he deserves a lot,) I don't think Mick could do the same justice to some of the material here as Burdon does.
If you're looking for a bright star in a dark universe... If your looking for some fun or have been yearning for an album you can sink your teeth into, look no further. I have rediscoverd Eric Burdon and he never left the building.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Burdon has gone to the cross roads!!!!.......2006-01-18

I bought this record strictly because of the reviews I read on Amazon. Im glad I did!!!

Perhaps only God or the Devil could make a man sing like this! Incredible vocals, technigue, and interpretations. Ultra great band too - where did these guys come from? Super production - beautiful sound. Great songs with cool lyrics. One of the best records ever to be heard anywhere - anytime. Chilling. Still cant believe anyone can do those things with a voice, with complete ease and always comes off completely natural. Mr Burdon's voice is never a put-on, no matter whether he goes for gentle whispers or Louis Armstrong type growls - he's the real
F-n deal! Every time he does something with his voice - you go -oh man I cant belive he can do that - do it again! - and then he does something else totaly new. Always stikes the right mood. Rock, blues, jazz, latin, folk - it dosnt matter - this guy is great. As well as all the musicians on this album. The song "Jazz Man" is an instant jazz classic - Mr Burdons Jazz vocal style is better then music -right in the groove - outstanding!

Please Mr. Burdon - Please Guys - do a Jazz songbook!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cameo's 1979 Album is Funk On The One!.......2002-09-21

This is one of Cameo's most essential albums-probably one of the best they ever made. It has all the makings of the perfect old school funk album. It's filled to the brim with energetic jams, funky dance grooves,finger-pickin'style guitar, throbbin' bass lines, and of course a strong brass section and synth layers on the top. This album is a nostalgic one, with classic jams such as the groove-intoxicating R&B hit, "I Just Want To Be", the rhythmic "Energy","The Rock", and the slow-jam "Sparkle". Plus, it also has a remake of "Find My Way", which is even more of a disco song than the first one; Since there was this big disco craze in 1979, it made sense for cameo to do this song and it fitted this album fine cuz it was in touch with the time. At one time or another, every funk band experimented with disco.
They don't make good albums like this anymore. I have this on LP and I think this album would be a great addition everybody's funk collection. It's very necessary that you purchase this album today!

5 out of 5 stars My first Cameo Album that I still love.......2002-03-17

I remember sneaking out of my parent's house to buy this album in 1979. This album shows why Cameo is a Funk Legends group. I love "I just want to be" and "Sparkle". This album is still slammin' and you must get it.

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2002-02-12

It was released back in 1979 while disco craze was at the peak of it's popularity. I miss those days really.
'I Just Want To Be' sounds still great to me with it's thumping bass and groove line. 'Sparkle' is a very good example of Cameo's ballad side. Energy, New York and the rest are classic Cameo trademarks. Consequently, I recommend this album to all the die-hard Cameo fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good Disc.......2000-03-18

Sparkle is still the song.that's one of the tightest slow Jams over the past 25 years.I just want to be is so Funky.all the trademark Cameo Sounds are all here.it's a good disc.

This cd is not new but the world needs to know how good this cd is...iam a preacher in the wilderness. If this cd is in your collection, dust it of and give it a listen again. This is by far one of Patti Austin finest work and needs the attention it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-04-07

It's my first CD bought from Amazon and it's one of the best albums of Patti. Different styles but a unique big voice! Hear her Aretha's voice in the track 5, for example! Track 1 is a new version of the first song in her album "Havana Candy". Track 2 shows us her "Ability To Swing". Tracks 3-4-10 are beautiful ballads. Track 6 is the reggae one. Tracks 7-8 have a sweet sound. Track 9 is my favourite of the album, in a gospel style.

5 out of 5 stars Talent sometimes goes unnoticed by the masses!.......2003-01-02

In the world of motion pictures, the character performer tends to have a longer career than the so-called "leading man/woman" because the former can become whatever the script requires, providing necessary support. In the music world, there are some artists that never become the star that they should but that does not diminish their talent. They simply become a delicacy to be savored by a select few.

Patti Austin is one of those delicacies. She has had a long career as solo performer and guest artist, never quite gaining the status that she so richly deserves.

1994's "That Secret Place" is the perfect introduction for the uninitiated to the beautiful jewel that is Patti Austin. Backed on several cuts by the likes of Lee Ritenour (guitar), Bob James (piano), Paulinho da Costa (percussion), Greg Philliganes (piano/synthesizer), with string and horn arrangements by Jerry Hey, Austin travels a musical road consisting of jazz, pop, R & B, and shades of a little gospel influence.

"Ability to Swing" is a masterly executed mixture, allowing the singer to show her shills as a vocalist and scat singer. The band also gets to "cut loose" in its accompaniment and solo interludes.

"Broken Dreams, written by El Debarge (who also does guest vocalist duties), his brother Darell and Tony A. Redio, is about the breakup of a relationship and the possibility of a reconciliation. Both Debarge and Austin play off each other quite well, somewhat reminiscent of Austin's work with James Ingram.

Austin successfully covers the "Queen of Soul's" territory on the funky remake of Aretha's classic "Rock Steady".
"Captivated", with its reggae influence allows Austin to show a side not often found on her usual recordings.

"Reach" makes the listener want to "jump the pews" while the tune that follows it, "Stars in Your Eyes", is a quiet yet powerful love ballad.

The best of all is "Hurry Home", an obvious plead for the hasty return of a long absent lover. This tune shares many qualities with the Oleta Adams' hit "Get Here".

Patti Austin has done more in this one album than most of today's chart-toppers can do in several.

She is what good music is all about and maybe one day she'll get her much-deserved "props".

5 out of 5 stars PATTI AUSTIN - - THE RARE SINGER WITH THE ABILITY TO SWING!.......1998-07-31

Whereas it's really hard to go wrong with a Patti Austin album this last album of new material from her time with GRP Records is as good as self-titled '84 Qwest Records release as a showcase for her unique gift of embracing any musical genre with depth and conviction. Again it becomes more and more frustrating as the sterling tracks move along and Austin sings with both technical finesse and stylish, knowing reserve. For she has recorded yet another record that SHOULD HAVE BEEN a blockbuster SMASH HIT!

Once more she makes it hard to pick favorites, but the Grammy-nominated "Ability to Swing", and the anthemic pop ballad "Somebody Make Me Laugh", along with the kool scat of the title song are enough reason to smile for the overlooked blessing of fine, classic contemporary music.

The arrangement on Aretha Franklin's evergreen "Rock Steady" makes you want mo'. Producer Lee Ritenour is obviously in love with old friend Austin's silk! y, powerful voice. He clothes it well all over this outing. "Broken Dreams" (w/ El DeBarge) is soulfully sweet Quiet Storm magic, while "Reach" is funky R&B aided by vocal powerhouses Tata Vega, Phil Perry, and Vesta!

"Hurry Home" finds Austin offering up a more raw, seductive plea, and "Stars in Your Eyes" is an emotion-packed, soaring prayer, from a melodic angel.

Another desert island CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of those albums that gets better & better!!.......1998-07-21

Patti Austin has one of "those perfect voices" -- clear, always in tune -- but with rare depth and sincerity. This is a real "has it all" album, and I heartily recommend it as THE "definitive" Patti Austin -- a "must have" for anyone with a grown-up appetite for jazz voice.

5 out of 5 stars The Best..........2002-02-04

....my favorites are "Closer Than Close" and "Circles", but this has enuff of those ol' skool flavored jams to shake up even the purists' points of view. Seduction CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just love this music.......2000-09-04

I already wrote a review but I don't see it here so I'm going to do another one. I just love this cd! My favorites are "Silver Shadow", "Circles" (brings me back to high school!), and "Touch a Four Leaf Clover". It is very upbeat music and makes me happy. Let's face it the '80s music is the best and especially R&B!

5 out of 5 stars Very uplifting..........2000-09-04

This cd is so uplifting. I especially like "Circles" (remember that one from high school!), "Silver Shadow" and "Touch a Four Leaf Clover". I have been listening to it over and over again and I don't get tired of hearing it. Just beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars very solid hits.......1999-10-13

this album has so many great songs on it that you wonder how come this group wasn't bigger? cuz the songs were great then as they are now.be it up-tempo circles or the cheating heart secret lovers they could come up with good songs.and they gave you a story.that's lost in today's music scene.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1999-08-17

If you're a fan of Atlantic Starr, don't pass on this. It is a collection of their best hits in their origional format (not re-recorded). Excellent!!!!
