David Arkenstone never fails to please !.......2007-04-01
I own many of David Arkenstone's cds though not all of them as yet. This was the first one I purchased and since then I continue to find more to like about his music compositions. Celtic Book of Days is one of my favorite cds to pull out and listen to over and over again. I never get tired of it. His other cds have never failed to please either though this is by far my most listened to cd. I recommend David Arkenstone highly.
A well-crafted album.......2006-10-08
The Celtic Book of Days (released in 1998) is David Arkenstone's eleventh full-length album. The material consists of Celtic music--15 tracks. Overall, I find the songwriting to be gratifying, the musicianship to be proficient, and the sound quality to be satisfying. Arkenstone sings on "The Boats." My favorite pieces are "Equos Fair," "Heart of Spring," "In the Ancient Time," and "Cailleach's Whisper." The kinetic "Equos Fair" provides infectious melodies. "Heart of Spring" is plaintive and pretty. The beautiful, serene "In the Ancient Time" is sung a cappella by a choir. I like the mournful "Cailleach's Whisper," with its attractive uilleann pipes. Included in the CD foldout is text dealing with Celtic lore. The album cover artwork is also interesting, and the color photo of Arkenstone on the back of the CD jewel case is nice. The disc is almost 67 minutes. Arkenstone is a talented artist. Actually, I rate this piece of work 3.5 stars. The Celtic Book of Days is recommendable.
CELTIC BOOK OF DAYS.......2006-09-20
Being a dancer and of Celtic spirit; I am enchanted with the song "DRAGON'S BREATH." I attend Celtic and Renasaiance Festivals. This piece of music is my favorite. The melody is sensual and free spirited.
Very Good Album, very much worth your time........2005-10-19
As a long-term fan of David's, I have stayed with him as he explored different directions of his craft. While some critics are correct in pointing out Celtic Book of Days is not "true" Celtic music, this is nonetheless a fine album in it's own right. It's not meant to be a study of traditional Celtic musicology, rather a picturesque romp that happens to have a Celtic flavor to it. If you like David's other works, I'm sure you'll like this as well. I received this album for Christmas 1999 and played it to death for the first few days. To this day it is still one of my comfortable favorites. As an aspiring writer, I credit the repeated listening to this album with helping me create a story about olden times in Britannia when life was simpler and filled with adventure, wonder and, most of all, MAGIC!
Let this album so inspire you as well.
New Age Drivel.......2005-06-29
David is a fine composer. He's written some very lovely new age music. This is his attempt to jump onto the Celtic bandwagon and it fails miserably. Dirty Linen magazine tore this album to shreds. It barely registers as Celtic. There's no fire here, no spirit. It's like the Disney version of what Celtic music should be. David should stick to his etherial compositions and leave the Celtic music to those people who make a living at playing celtic music. This is an insult to musicians who spend years learning the nuances of Irish/Scottish music.

Customer Reviews:
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04
There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.
Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15
I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.
A great album.......2001-01-28
Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

Customer Reviews:
Exquisite.......2004-06-26
I can imagine being there again, in Norway, contemplating the magnificent fjords in majestic silence, listening to the pure waterfalls.
There are so many sounds, many images, many moods that other pianists were incapable of capturing. Pletnev makes you dream and feel, he tells you simple stories of life, and you listen, fascinated, wondering how such simple things could be so complex.
There's a grace, a refinement, a harmony, a sensibility never heard before from Grieg. It's melancholy. It's joy. Iridescent beauty...
Splendid Grieg from Mikhail Pletnev.......2004-03-21
Mikhail Pletnev is unquestionably one of our finest pianists. His splendid playing is not only replete with much drama and pathos, but also has a strong intellectual streak that is as vivid as Brendel's. This splendid recording of Grieg's piano sonata along with some of the most famous Lyric Pieces demonstrates that he is as convincing an interpreter of Grieg as he is of Chopin, Rachmaninoff or Haydn. Along with Leif Ove Andsnes' recent recording of Grieg's Lyric Pieces, Pletnev's splendid account is as brilliant as the classic Deutsche Grammophon recording by Emil Gilels. Indeed, in some of Pletnev's performances, most notably the Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, I doubt I have heard the Lyric Pieces played better with such warmth and vividness approaching Impressionism. Pletnev's exceptional performance of the Piano Sonata may be the finest I have heard. Without question this fine CD is among Deutsche Grammophon's best recent recordings of works for the solo piano.
Judge for yourself!.......2002-03-07
Please ignore the editorial review of this album. I just heard it on the radio and am rushing to buy it. I've heard a number of recordings of most of these pieces, and have never heard them more beautifully played. Grieg can sound really rinky-dink or absolutely profound and moving; this playing is the latter. And the piano that he's playing on has one of the loveliest tones for this kind of music that I've heard.

Customer Reviews:
extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21
I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.
While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.
An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29
This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).
For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.
For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.
I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!
I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!
I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!
Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30
It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31
The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.
Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09
I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.
Great Collection.......2001-12-25
Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!
Exceptional.......2001-11-30
I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!
A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29
To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

A Return to greater things.......2007-03-25
This offering is haunting, brooding and a recording that brang them back from the depths of mediocrity. This IS my favorite Furs recording and I get a kick out of the fact that when my friends ask me what am I listening to and I tell them they say are they still around? This is one of those rare recordings that sounds timeless, you wouldn't be able to say what year it was done unless you knew. If you like The Furs grab this and enjoy. Elements of The Cure and Joy Division abound and at the used price here a bargin. Interpol wishes they could have recorded a follow up album to their debut this good.
Ahead of its time.......2006-04-11
The Furs went for the wall of sound effect on this one, which is very different than any other of their albums. When this album was released in 1989 the shoegazer movement was beginning and they took some ideas with the help of an expert of building this type of sound, Dave Allen, longtime producer for The Cure, so I say that it was ahead because they actually made songs using this effect on the contrary to the early recordings by My Bloody Valentine which were messy, and if you listen carefully at the end of "entertain me" you'll see that MBV used some of the sound for their masterpiece "Loveless". This album has no hit singles and it's enjoyed best as a whole, it's a shame the timing of the release, because if it had been released in the early 90's it would have gotten more attention, instead of releasing "World Outside" a few moths before the alternative music revolution.
The best furs / the bleakest furs.......2006-02-15
i have to agree with all the reviewers below. after some really lowest-common-denominator albums, the furs struck back with this onslaught of bleak / depressed / pissed-off songs. like the cure's pornography in it's tension and anger, this is the best the band recorded. dark, cathardic and painful. snatch up one of those 98¢ copies that are selling in the zshops..... this is amazing stuff!
Do you like music...are you depressed, or English, or depressed about being in England?.......2005-12-02
This is a great English band, and by English I mean from England, not speaking in English, which ironically they do! The Furs (as many fans call them, as well as "The Psychedelic Furs") are low-key, and brooding in their style and if you are depressed and sad, they will help you dive perhaps even deeper into that mindset to be able to fully become one with your sadness. If, however, like me, however, you are more often looking for something to mellow you out and have as mood music in the backgroud this excellent music and I have two copies of this album. The first copy was a tape and now that tapes are so 1980s and so on..., I had to break down and buy the CD so I could put it on my computer (lap and desk, top) so I could listen more. Note: I actually put it IN the computer for the computer illererate, not ON it). By the way don't let the name Psychedelic Furs turn you off because if you are reading this, you have listened to the band before and so have other, more accurate, ways to judge them as a band. I guess (hope) you could be reading this as a friend just to give me votes so someday... I can be a top 1000 reviewer and be a somebody...please vote...thanks. so overall, this is a great album and better than some of the greatest hits stuff I bought from the Furs, which I think is...interesing, that I would think that. so take care and remember, it's your parade and you get to make desicions about it...what will be your theme music???
With care,
Sam
My favorite Furs album.......2005-06-26
While "Book of Days" has a similar melodic sound to the Psychedelic Furs previous album, "Midnight to Midnight," it is darker, and superior in every respect -- musically and lyrically. This categorizes "Book" as a truly superb album - in my opinion the band's best - since "Midnight" is quite good. Here, Richard Butler sings of feelings of regret, hopelessness and squandered time, which is a marked departure to the feel-good theme of the previous album.
Interestingly, "Book" starts off with one of the less stellar tracks, "Shine," a song which doesn't reflect the general tenor of the album. It can be argued that, on all of the band's previous albums, the first track is the strongest one on the album, or close to it. This is definitely true on the prior two: "Midnight" ("Heartbreak Beat") and "Mirror Moves" ("The Ghost In You"). The second track, "Entertain Me," is probably my favorite song on any Furs album (tied with "India"). "Entertain Me" starts off with what sounds like a jet plane or a race car, which leads into an intriguing bass line, reminiscent of The Cure's "Shiver and Shake." I wonder if Kurt Cobain was influenced by this song when writing the lyrics for his masterpiece "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
The title track, "Book of Days," about a women who feels she's wasting her life away, is superb, as is "Should God Forget," "Parade," and "I Don't Mine." There is no filler on this album, and it can be listened to repeatedly without getting stale. Perhaps the debut album of "The Psychedelic Furs" was more innovative, but I believe that "Book of Days" remains the band's seminal work.

Customer Reviews:
A Christmas celebration for Classical Music Lovers only.......2002-11-06
The cover of this 2 disc set features half a dozen of the great voices of our time: Pavarotti, Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Leontyne Price. However, selections by these soloists comprise only 2/5 of the set, the rest being choral and orchestral works.
Nor are these fabulous voices given equal representation. Pavarotti and my personal favorite, Joan Sutherland, have four songs apiece; Price and Kanawa have three apiece; Renata Tebaldi two and only one for Placido Domingo.
However, this is basically a very good collection. The first disc is a bit on the solemn side, while the second is brighter. Pavarotti leads off the entire collection with "Adeste Fideles" and returns later on the first disc with "Mille Cherubini in Coro". His renditions of "Panis Angelicus" and "Gesu Bambino" help grace the second CD.
Joan Sutherland brightens the first disc with her "Joy To The World" and then sets the lighter mood of the second disc with "Deck The Halls" and later returns with a sprightly "Twelve Days of Christmas". She also gives us the beautiful and tender "Virgin Slumber Song". Leontyne Price gives us Schubert's "Ave Maria", "O Tannenbaum" and "O Holy Night". Kiri Te Kanawa gives us Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria", surprises us with "White Christmas" (a very beautiful & unique interpretation), and winds up the entire set with "Mary's Boy Child". Renata Tebaldi's contributions are Brahms' "Lullaby" and "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle". Placido Domingo's sole appearance is with the dynamic "Hosanna in Excelsis" from Lloyd Weber's Requiem.
It is a splendid feast of vocal performances. However, the choral and orchestral selections have weak spots. I was especially disappointed in the Chicago Symphony & Chorus rendition of "For Unto Us a Child Is Born", and also thought that a good rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus would've worked better. The orchestral selections did have bright spots such as "Sleigh Ride" (Mozart's, not Leroy Anderson's), Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Snowflakes" from the Nutcracker, and the "Skater's Waltz".
All in all, this is a collection which belongs in your Christmas Classical collection, but can't be considered an absolute essential.
This may be a good album; the marketing ploy is shameless.......2001-11-15
I have not listened specifically to this edition, but I can tell you with near absolute certainty that this is a classic example of marketing at its most shameless. This is nothing more than a reissue of "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", but with a different title! (Something similar was done back in 1963, when the Harry Simeone Chorale's ever-popular 1958 LP, "Sing We Now of Christmas", was retitled and re-released as "The Little Drummer Boy"--its current CD title--, but at least the advertising there seemed slightly more honest.)
Everything on "The #1 Christmas Album" is exactly the same as on "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", right down to the order of the musical selections on the album. Only the cover design is different. Decca/London apparently believes that it can fool its customers into thinking that they are buying another album if they simply change the title. Of course, the album itself is reasonably good, though not on the level of most of my favorite Christmas albums, not even the now-deleted RCA Victor "Christmas Treasures", a collection culled from RCA Victor's Living Stereo series. The offense lies in the marketing gimmick, something I have never seen in all my years of avid CD buying. This is worse than all those "collections" which just rehash old material--at least each collection is a newly organized album.
Touch of angle, touch of heart.......2001-11-14
If you enjoy opera or choir, this is a must collection. The Choir of King's College probably knows the secret how to make the listener flying among thousands of Christmas candles. Pavarotti's opening is so mighty that remind people, this year, to be courageous and to believe (not limited from religious sense but the humanity perspective.) And his Mill Cherubini and Panis Angelicus can vibrate one's tear from the heart, reflecting to the tragedy and the war in 2001. As for the sopranos, this collection is a Jewel. Joan Sutherland's Deck The Hall and The Twelve Days of Christmas bring out the merry atmosphere of the season and cheer one's mood to celebrate. Also her Virgin's Slumber Song has so much beauty and grace . Kanawa's Ave Maria is so dramatic performed that perfectly drawn out the human's longing for love and protection. All the orchestra also have done a splendid job. The arrangement is perfect there is no dull moment from the beginning to the end.
