Product Description
One of the best-known musicians in the southwest has released a long awaited compact disc that's sure to create even more buzz about this in-demand pianist, conductor, arranger, and composer. "In A Sentimental Mood" is a fluid jazz recording that appeals to a wide range of listeners, from jazz aficionados to those who simply love piano music. Arranged and performed by Lisa LeMay, the solo piano recording includes familiar tunes, such as the title cut and her richly lyric and passionate rendition of All The Things You Are. The disc includes less familiar fare, such as Bloodcount, by jazz great Billy Strayhorn. Also on board are two self-penned originals delivered with tender-hearted finesse and clarity. LeMay's devotion to classic melody and harmonic form is evident in this rhapsodic nod to the American Popular Songbook. The listener embarks on a rewarding ride.

Mac Rebennack's long commercial drought finally ended in the late '80s with In a Sentimental Mood, an album of pop standards bearing almost no connection to New Orleans R&B roots. His album-opening duet with Rickie Lee Jones, "Making' Whoopee," was a big hit after it was included on the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack, and it's easy to understand why Harry Connick Jr. fans who'd bought When Harry Met Sally were seduced by this coy come-on. Still, it's odd to hear Rebennack's scruffy baritone in service to such lush, sweeping orchestration (and to hear him sing a line like "I've got a sweet tooth for your sweet heart"). The Doctor does lend a nice bluesy feel to a Satchmo favorite, "My Buddy," and to Charles Brown's classic, "Black Night," and his version of "More Than You Know" is a small miracle of understatement. --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Oh so cool.......2007-03-09
I was staying at a tiny bed and breakfast in Cape Town when I heard this CD. I asked who it was and the owner said - oh my father-in-law loves him and so does my husband - as if that was answer enough and handed me the cover. I wrote it down and the very first time I got near a computer ordered it and several other Dr John's from Amazon. I have played it over and over since, straight repeat or shuffle. It is a lovely listenable delightful rendering of some great songs. The man's voice is magic - I am no expert but I know what I like and I love this.
Don't mess with Mister In Between........2005-11-21
This is an album of Dr. John performing standards. Standards with a New Orleans influence. It's a good album, tastefully done. Fans of "The Night Tripper" should enjoy it.
JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED.......2005-10-27
A too brief dose of mellowed down blooze/jazz/RNB (and practically any other genre you can conjure up) as only New Orlean's own funky maestro can administer it. Like Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, and damned few others, the gravelly, soul-sational Dr. John can literally cover any standard and own it forever. His sly, steamy duet with Rickie Lee Jones on MAKIN' WHOOPEE is the perfect intertwining of two of modern music's most intriguing talents, and the ivory tinkler's breezy rendering of DON'T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYING is pure laid back nirvana. No matter what kind of mood you may find yourself in, the doctor's got your prescription. RATING: FIVE BLACK KEYS
Cool tunes.......2002-09-15
Some of the tracks on this CD are singularly special. "Makin' Whoopee" featuring Rickie Lee Jones is an absolute treat, a very nice pairing. "My Buddy" is just achingly good, as is "More Than You Know." There are some fine musical performances, notably the sax solo by Joel Peskin--edgy and cool. The charts are altogether mellow and Dr. John's gruffly appealing voice is a perfect compliment to his fluid piano playing. These are true "oldies but goodies" -- songs by Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter. Classic songs by the classic Dr. John.
Recommended.
Great mood music.......2002-05-10
This is an excellent CD for setting the mood at a patio gathering of friends, or a small dinner party for two. Some feel-good music with a touch of sentiment. Highly recommend.

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07
I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.
Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.
I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.
I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.
Delight in every note.......2006-03-10
To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.
So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.
I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.
While they last..........2005-05-17
Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.
Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.
Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05
Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25
Treasures from a Treasure.
Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.
What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.
I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)
Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.
More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15
As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

The Right Person for Sentimental Jazz.......2001-05-23
Houston Person just gets better, and this 2000 album from HighNote shows the tenor saxophonist at his ballad-playing best. Stan Hope on piano, George Kaye on bass and Chip White on drums do a fine job of letting Person express himself on the 12 tunes. It's just under an hour of romantic but interesting mood music for you -- either by yourself or, better yet, with someone very special.

Romeo and Juliet were the original star-crossed lovers; Shakespeare coined the phrase in his tragedy about their young love and tragic death. But the expression can be applied to doomed couples of all kinds: Faust and Marguerite, Othello and Desdemona, and of course Tony and Maria in West Side Story, which updates Romeo and Juliet to modern New York. This recording, taped at a gala concert in Chicago in 1998 and videotaped for a telecast on the PBS series Great Performances, presents music about doomed love composed by Leonard Bernstein, Charles Gounod, Franz Lehar, Duke Ellington, and others, including several Spanish songs that show Plácido Domingo in top form. After all the tragedy, there is a duet that signals one happy ending: the Merry Widow waltz. Domingo and Renée Fleming are two of today's greatest singers, and they live up to their reputations. The voices are too operatic for West Side Story, but Bernstein would have disagreed. For his definitive recording of the show, he chose similar voices: José Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2002-09-01
I must say that this album was not what I had hoped, and as it was my introduction to Renee Fleming, it was sometime before I bought another of her CDs. Domingo, I would hope, would have better judgement in his recordings, for I found this album nowhere near standard.
Please only purchase this item if you have enjoyed better works from both artists, for it was my introdution to them both, and I regret to say that I was most dissapointed! ~
How Can You Give This Less Then Five Stars ???.......2002-08-16
This recording is just great. When I first saw it in the store, I was so affraid that this would be a live recording. Its not! Yay! The only thing I did not like about this recording was the West Side Store Prologue. Renée would make a really good Maria. Placdio would not make that great of a Tony. He really is limited to opera and art song. Renée, however, can do it all. I really love Renée's "Prelude to a Kiss". I have this song on a recording with Kathleen Battle and I have to say that I really prefer Renée's rendition much better. I say so because I think jazz should be for bigger voices. Renée shines on this recording and blows Placido out of the water. Get this for Renée but not for Placido.
This is really very nice!.......2002-02-17
I loved this. I thought Renée was just wonderful. It's so wonderful when we have opera singers who grace our ears with doing something out of there element and doing it PHENOMINALLY!! So it's nice to have Renée singing the "Tonight" duet with Domingo in West Side Story. But I do agree with the reviewer below me, in that Domingo sounds a little operatic for this role. After all, it is a musical (not everyone's as versatile as our diva). Her "Somewhere" is just gorgeous, althought, my favorite "Somewhere" is sung by Jessye Norman (for all you West Side Story finatics out there). My personal favorites on this disc are the jazz songs by Renée. Who knew she had such a talent for jazz? I wish there were more Renée Fleming jazz recordings out there.
Below Their Standards.......2000-02-22
While both Domingo and Fleming are among today's outstanding singers, this is a very dissappointing disc. Even in the Othello selection, which comes from their normal operatic repetoire, they are not engaging. The dramatic tension is suprisingly slack. Unless you need to have every disk they made, pass this one up.

Diverse offering full of laughter, love and the blues!!.......1998-12-24
This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.
I love it!! I believe you will, too.

Album Description
When Eroica originally released Volumes I and II of Bela Bartok's solo piano works, featuring world class Hungarian-American pianist June de Toth, our primary mission was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. With that mission accomplished, Ms de Toth is now engaged in completing the Bartók cycle. She will be the first woman to record the Bartók solo piano works in their entirety. These beginnings have launched Eroica on a fast track to our goal of international acceptance and recognition. We have initiated an intensive series of auditions, which have resulted in the signing of over a hundred brilliantly gifted new artists. We are honored by the fact that these artists and ensembles have chosen the Eroica label to introduce their CDs to a world wide record store and internet audience. Auditions and negotiations with other world class classical artists are also underway at this writing. You may order them directly from Eroica or Vitaminic, as well as by phone, fax or secured credit card orders.
You will find Eroica CDs listed in the Schwann Opus catalog, and at all Muze kiosks. You can also order for CDs from your favorite record store, including Tower, Borders Books and Music, Hastings, Sound Warehouse, Media Play, Blockbuster, and all other record stores. Just tell the sales person to look us up in the Alliance One Stop and/or Muze kiosk data bases. Eroica CDs are distributed internationally by Myong Eum Music Co., Ltd. (Korea) Francemp3 (France) Diapason (Italy); PeopleSound and AvantNoise (Great Britain); CD4 (Portugal); H&B Direct (22 Countries); and in the U.S. by Amazon.com; Barnes and Nobel, Borders Books and Music; CD Now; CD Universe, Every CD; The Orchard Music Distributors; Piano Tonight; the ClassicalHub;Follett Audio Visual; MP3.com; Yahoo Music; and most other major internet sites.

Another Great Album by Boston Jazz Ensemble........2005-08-18
Stumbling onto this music seems to be in vogue. I first heard it being played as background music in a book store. It was so relaxing that I knew I just had to get it.
I also found another album by the same group entitled "Sentimental Over You". Amazon lists the second album artist as Gerry Beaudoin. More correctly, the artists for both albums should be listed as "Gerry Beaudoin and The Boston Jazz Ensemble". Both rated as five stars.
DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD.......2005-04-05
As with another reviewer, I "stumbled" upon the cassette of the Boston Jazz Ensemble several years ago. I have it in my car and play it all of the time. I listen to the car radio or the Boston Jazz Ensemble...nothing else...that's how much I like this recording.
I keep coming back to Amazon, hoping that I will find another offering by this group of musicians, but I am sorry to say that I have found no other recording. If you want hot jazz, this is not the CD for you.
However...if you want a mellow recording, by world-class musicians who "know" their instruments, then you should definitely purchase this CD. The reviewer who gave it three stars must have hit the wrong key. This is a five-star recording all the way!
There are ad libs on this recording that are executed so flawlessly and with such ease, this recording should be in music schools as a reference tool on how ad libs are supposed to be played.
And...if you are a member of the Boston Jazz Ensemble and are reading this review...PLEASE make another recording in this style.
Our favorite CD to play while entertaining.......2001-12-01
This is a great CD. I've not bothered to review a CD before, but when I saw 3 stars by another review, I had to speak up! We like all kinds of music, but when we have company for dinner we always play this CD. It is a beautiful and truly classy sounding collection of songs. You feel like you're sitting in a small intimate club in Soho. We have other CDs of classic tunes from the Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, etc. era ... but this one stands out from all the others. This is a super CD.
This cd has already become one of my favorites.......2001-05-02
It's funny how sometimes things just happen. In the case of this cd I just stumbled on to it. By all means i'm not sorry for this stumble. It has turned out to be one of my many cherished treasures.
The music on this cd is just grand. The song selection and band seem to be made for each other. They fit together so nicely. I would like to purchase more of this product when it becomes available. WITH LOVE AND MUSIC, PHILIP SCOTT

Customer Reviews:
All you need to know about this CD.......2001-11-28
The only thing really missing from this CD is the Grammy Award it was nominated for -- it's Johnny Mathis that's really all you need to know.
Unnecessarily High Keys Distort Ellington's Material.......2000-03-26
When I was young, Mathis was a big idol of mine but last decades only brought pro, not brilliant performances like this tribute. Mathis seems to wish to prove he's able to explode his throat to the extremely highest keys what undeniably distorts the sense of ellingtonian environment. Professionally performed and recorded but ... something's missing.
An unrecognized hallmark in American recording history.......1999-12-25
My favorite singer is Frank Sinatra, yet my favorite album in the whole world is this terrific tribute to Duke Ellington by Johnny Mathis.
Some called it progress when live orchestras were abandoned for computers and tracking. This album recaptures the magic of reuniting artist and orchestra. The results are terrific.
Mathis is in great voice. The arrangements are terrific. Great song choice (although I would like to see what he could have done with "Caravan"). My choices for best tracks? Probably "In A Mellow Tone" and "Come Sunday".
I hope that Mr. Mathis eventually drops his current tendency to record with synthesizers and computers and goes back to what he does best--great American songs.
Also check out Tony Bennett's "Hot and Cool" tribute to the Duke.
As Close To Live as You'll Get in a Studio Recording.......1998-10-06
This recording was nominated for a Grammy in 1991 for best Traditional Pop recording but lost to a recording by Tony Bennett. They like to go with whoever's popular at the Grammys. But no matter: I have my own nominations and awards to dole out for this beauty.
BEST USE OF CD SPACE. You get 57 whole minutes of music on this one. This is done primarily with the help of 6 short instrumental fillers between 12 great songs.
BEST USE OF A CATHEDRAL IN A NON-GOSPEL SETTING. Mathis recorded the whole thing at Petersham Church in London, England. You can hear every shuffle, the occasional sniffle and cough, as well as Mathis' rich, reverberating tenor.
BEST SUBJECT MATTER. The music of Duke Ellington is almost forgotten nowadays, especially to those who don't follow jazz. Mathis offers up this reminder of past greatness for a new generation to witness.
BEST USE OF BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY. George Hurrell's beautiful cover photography is reminiscent of the works of James Van Der Zee and the great publicity photographers of the jazz age.
This recording is clean and satisfying. The opening gives you a start with its instrumental tribute to Harlem nightlife, but it settles down by the time it gets to Daydream. This recording is a series of one-and two-take sessions that is the closest thing to a live recording you'll find in a studio recording. Very little monkeying around technologically speaking, just pure, clean song. Which is what Mathis excels at.
