Using The Drone as a canvas upon which to paint the music, these spontaneous improvisations occurred with no plan or direction other than who would begin. The resulting rhapsodies reveal the playfulness, passion and pathos visited upon two classically trained musicians who simply got out of the way in order to allow the music to "play them."

Very hard to listen to.......2006-04-18

In general, I'm a big fan of insect noises (cicadas, crickets, etc.), and I've discovered that it's really hard to find good field recordings. So I was pretty excited about this CD, even though I'd never heard any of it; I was sure I'd love it. However... it doesn't sound at all like I expected. There is no soothing drone, no happy chirp, no peaceful hum. These insects make some impressive and intense sounds, but it's not something I enjoy hearing. At best, it sounds sort of like an AM radio that's not tuned to anything, but more often it just sounds like high, piercing shrieks of feedback. Genuinely painful, even when listened to at a reasonably quiet volume.

This recording is astonishing -- it sounds for all the world at places like jet engines warming up. The intensity of the audio generated by these insects is powerful -- but I found it to be almost trance-inducing. The subtitle 'insect electronica from Southeast Asia' might cause some listeners to believe that the recorded sounds have been altered in the studio in some way -- but the notes state that they have not. The sounds were recorded in Laos, Burma and Thailand, then brought back to the US to be assembled -- nothing further was done to them.

My only complaint about this disc is that it's not long enough (it times out at just under 40 minutes) -- but I guess that's what the 'repeat' button is for, right?

This is a great find -- I've been pleased to discover that it fits with just about anything I'm doing.

For the curious, there are some examples out there of insect sounds being incorporated into musical compositions. Alio Die does it seamlessly on quite a few of his works -- and Graeme Ravell (of SPK, now having made quite a name for himself doing film soundtracks) has an incredible recording (a bit hard to find, but well worth it) entitled THE INSECT MUSICIANS, in which he uses insect sounds as a base for his compositions.

Mr. Chiu offered this listener arguably the most gratifying recorded music experience. He approaches Prokofiev ( and other great composers ) first as a musician, with a depth of expression that left me breathless! But because his piano technique is flawless, his instrumental skill is almost a distraction, but Mr. Chiu somehow allows his fingers to feel every nuance. If you have ever loved the music of Prokofiev, this is a recording which will bring tears to your eyes with it's beauty. Mr. Chiu is equally understanding and expressive with Vol. 9 which I also have. Why this superlative pianist is not yet recognized among the top 3 pianists ever to record, along with Glenn Gould and Rubenstein puzzles me.I don't understand how any human being can be so gifted ! Thank you, thank you, Frederick Chiu.

Essential for Prokofiev Fans.......2000-07-23

Although this is Prokofiev's second most popular ballet (next to 'Romeo and Juliet'), the complete ballet has been rarely recorded on LP or disc, the most famous being Andre Previn with the LSO, Ashkenazy with the Cleveland (recently re-released), and Pletnev's much heralded 1995 release w/ the Russian National Orchestra on DGG. Rozhdestvensky eclipses them all by a wide margin. Tempos are generally brisk. He accentuates the dark passages lurking within, adding dramatic tension in passages lacking in the other recordings. And his lines are stunning at times. Consider Previn's more popular account by comparison -- it is downright moribund and sluggish.

The orchestral suite from 'The Steel Step' is also excellent. It offers a glimpse into Prokofiev when he tried to write a ballet on Soviet themes at the behest of Sergei Diaghilev. It is a monotonous, steely, dissonant work, but vividly brought to life by Rozhdestvensky's expert conducting.

The only criticism of this title is the recording quality -- the liner notes do not indicate when it was actually recorded although it is likely from the 60s or 70s. As a result, aural defects typical of Soviet recording equipment of the period can be heard, namely shrill brass and tinny violins in the upper treble regions. However, this should not detract from the musicality of these recordings.

By far the very best recording.......1999-09-27

Rozhdestvensky's is by far the very best recording of Prokofiev's neglected ballet masterpiece. Neither Previn's nor Pletnev's comes anywhere near it.

All of the rhapsodies received their names after many listenings, with the exception of "Kosovo." This haunting piece was named in the middle of the night, soon after its birth. Recording during the height of the bombings, this music carried deep and powerful images of its meaning and message even as it came upon us. We dedicate this rhapsody to peace and harmony among the peoples of the world.

This is real music.......2002-12-27

If you want beautiful melodies, thrashing guitar, and just plain old good music, this is the cd for you. The Dragonflies use a unique "space rock" style to captivate the listener. It's not your everyday music. It's something new and it's something very special. I recommend this album to pretty much anyone who can appreciate good music.
