Product Description
How many times have you longed for music with substance and found that your only choice was to return to what is familiar? To return to songs that felt like liquid memory, transporting you to a place that you had forgotten?

The Lock is just the thing to quench that thirst for substance. Their music invokes images from a time when you, the listener, didn't need music television to paint the picture for you. The movements and the emotions presented here count on you to use your mind. This is the intelligent listening for an intellectual audience.

Formed in 1999, The Lock had a goal of creating a piece of music that would be timeless, not trendy - thoughtful, not mindless and most of all, to bring the audience a piece of performance art.

The melodies and counter-melodies on the song "Seasons" fold in and out of each other like water over rock, cold and cleansing. In "Butterfly", an uplifting epic looks at the other side of the passing of a loved one. The true gem of this CD is "The Tower". Projecting images of a wife who waits in vain for her husband's return. The years pass and she is now an old woman still waiting on the beach for his ship to crest the horizon - a true homage to undying love. "In The West" with its reprise of "Points West" is a geographical honoring of all of the things one has to leave behind in order to achieve a dream.

This will be the sort of record that you will want to share with those who important to you. We are proud to offer you the self-titled debut album from The Lock and we wish peace through music.

Shirley Bassey can only garner praise for this new cd. She sounds absolutely fantastic particularly on "get the party started". A must have for old fans and an eyeopener for new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo For Bassey.......2007-08-02

When you've got it, you've got it! And it just shows that it doesn't matter how old you are as a performer - Bassey has got IT to burn. Dame Shirley Bassey is back better than ever with an album that would give any of the one-hit "Lohan/Hilton/Spears" wonders more than a run for their money. Shirley's version of Pink's "Get The Party Started" is almost a Bond Theme for the new millennium! This septuagenarian diva has a Top 10 UK album and deservedly so. If the likes of Madonna and Kylie and Cher keep re-inventing themselves - why not Shirley. You go girl!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great but why buy...........2007-07-16

This is a great CD but why buy it at such high prices when you can download it for $9.99 at itunes?

Shirley is incredible on this CD. There's no one like her.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN I THOUGHT.......2007-07-15

When I first learned that Shirley was releasing yet another remix album, I was disappointed, as I was hoping for an album of all new material. But I was pleasantly surprised. The entire album is very enjoyable, and the two new songs, Get The Party Started and The Living Tree, is some of her best work. At 70, her voice is still amazing and a joy to listen to. I would have rated this album 5 stars if it contained all new material. To this day, Dame Shirley Bassey rocks my world!!!!

5 out of 5 stars DAME SHIRLEY DOES IT AGAIN!!.......2007-07-11

The CD is out at long last...the party has started! Dame Shirley Bassey shines as always! She is a world treasure! A MUST buy CD.

Sure, they may have been the kings of heavy metal Cheez Whiz, but unlike many image-conscious '80s rockers, Dokken wrote genuinely appealing songs. Frontman Don Dokken's voice carried better than most belters, and George Lynch was a ferociously gifted guitarist who could tug at the heartstrings as easily as he could burn down the bedroom. Under Lock and Key, which wasn't as combustive as Dokken's first two albums Breaking the Chains and Tooth and Nail, seemed like an effort by the band to attract a larger following. It worked. Candy metal softballs like "It's Not Love," "Unchain the Night," and "In My Dreams" were heavy enough to keep the guys rockin', but sensitive enough to attract the chicks. And isn't that what '80s metal was all about? --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of Dokken's best.......2006-11-11

This one is up there with Under Tooth and Nail and Back for the Attack. If you like those two then you'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2006-03-02

This isn't as heavy as there album Tooth And Nail but it's almost as good and just as popular. The heavier Lightning Strikes, Til the Livin End, It's Not Love and Unchain the Night are and the more melodic In My Dreans, Will The Sun Rise and The Hunter are excellent too. The 2 ballads Jaded Heart and Slipping Away are excellent power ballads too. The whole band here performs just as well as they did on Tooth And Nail. If you like melodic rock, hair metal, classic rock, metal or good music in general than get this.

5 out of 5 stars Rokken w/ Dokken.......2006-02-25

Excellent example of 80's metal. Don Dokken's vocals shine on this cd and George Lynch's guitar work is by far some of his best. This whole cd rocks. I love all of the tracks, but a few that really stick out are: The Hunter, In My Dreams, Lightnin' Strikes Again, & It's Not Love. A must have for any 80's metal fan. You won't be let down by purchasing this one!!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT pop-metal offering.......2006-02-24

This release was more commercial friendly then their magnificent TOOTH AND NAIL, but it is still just as enjoyable - just different. Lyrically speaking, there are at 4-5 songs on here that explore the "having been wronged by the femme-fatale" theme that appears often enough on Dokken releases so as to almost make those lyrics a Dokken trademark.

Anyone who has ever been disappointed in love should be able to relate to Dokken's thorough covering of the subject, whether it be "searching for love on the lonely streets again" (The Hunter), betrayal of confidence (Don't Lie To Me), yearning for a love that still flourishes although it is history (In My Dreams), or the helplessness one feels when a loved one exits one's life (Slippin' Away). I think that has been a big reason Dokken has had such a lasting appeal to their fans because this is a subject so many of them can relate to.

I love Don Dokken's voice. He doesn't exhibit the same range as someone like Rob Halford (then again, who does?), but his voice can suit perfectly for all-out rockers like "Lightnin' Strikes" or ballads like "Slippin' Away" with equal justification. Can you imagine Rob Halford or Ronnie James Dio singing ballads? To me, it just doesn't work as well as Don Dokken's would on Dokken's ballads. Don's voice and style works out great in either capacity.

The first three songs, plus "Don't Lie To Me", are what I would classify as "melodic metal" - musically speaking, similar in style to the Scorpions. A theme and beat is recorded and diversified with George Lynch's intricate guitar work so as to maintain listener interest through the songs.

"Unchain the Night" is a great opener to the release - a mid-tempo track with a thumping bass hook and Don Dokken's soaring vocals. Dokken had opened shows with this number on tour before.

"The Hunter" is a another mid-tempo track, similar to the previous one. Lyrically it's about a broken-hearted guy "searching for love on the lonely streets again" that he himself acknowledges may be in vain.

"In My Dreams" - remember the video to this? George Lynch's fancy fingerwork in this guitar solo is AMAZING. (Incidentally, some techno-dance musicians call THE PARTY redid this in 1991 that promises an intersting comparison.) "Don't Lie To Me" on the same CD is similar to this song.

"Slippin' Away" is a power-ballad similar to "Alone Again" Dokken had released a year earlier. "Jaded Heart" is the other slow song on the CD.

"Lightnin' Strikes" and "Til The Livin' End" are the all out, rapid fire tempo songs on here with the thunderous drums and Lynch's lightning fast fretwork. That is stuff to crash your car to.

"It's Not Love" got a fair amount or radio and MTV airplay It does not happen to be one of my preferred Dokken recording, but it is a fan favorite, so let the other reviews tell you more about that track.

"Will The Sun Rise" sounds like a song that could have appreared on Def Leppard's HYSTERIA. It is a political statement against war. Listen to the song "Give It Up" from Don Dokken's solo CD UP FROM THE ASHES. They are lyrically similar.

Give this Dokken offering a serious listen - it ranks up there with "Tooth And Nail" as their best release.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Dokken.......2005-11-09

Dokken prove there one of the best metal bands to come out of the 80's with another great album. Dokken's music was a lot more serious than a lot of the hair bands as Dokken had maybe the best musicians out of them. Anyway here's my review...

1.Unchain the Night- 10/10 A great soft intro that leads into an awesome heavy rocker. This song has a heavy riff and great vocals. The bridge is great as Don's scream leads right into George's awesome solo where he shreds his ass off. George's second solo is better than the first as he plays with a ton of feeling.

2.The Hunter- 10/10 A great Van Halen type song with some great vocals. This song has an awesome riff and chorus. George's solo is excellent as he shreds a little but plays with a lot of feeling and makes every note count. This classic ends with a great note hold from Don Dokken. Great pop metal song.

3.In My Dreams- 10/10 This great melodic song starts with some good harmony vocals. George's riff is excellent. And Don's vocals are great and they sound a little like Joe Lynn Turner. The chorus is great as the harmony vocals work perfect for this song. George's solo is incredible again as he shreds away and shows off his great vibrato. One of my favorites and this song is a little similar to the Yngwie song "Heaven Tonight" One of Dokken's biggest hits and a great pop metal song.

4.Slippin' Away- 10/10 A great ballad with an excellent vocal performance by Don Dokken and an amazing solo by George Lynch who plays with so much emotion.

5.Lightnin' Strikes Again- 10/10 One of Dokken's best songs ever. George's riff is great and Don's vocals are great. An awesome fast paced song. George's solo is great as he shreds away and overdubs some harmony. Don's vocal performance is brilliant as he belts out a lot very high notes towards the end of the song.

6.It's Not Love- 10/10 A few great riffs from George Lynch. Very unique riffs. A great chorus and good vocals during the whole song. George's solo is excellent once again. George's second solo is as good as the first too!

7.Jaded Heart- 10/10 An excellent Alone Again style ballad with an excellent chorus and riff. Don's vocals are very powerful and are filled with emotion. George Lynch's solo is awesome too.

8.Don't Lie to Me- 10/10 A great melodic song that sounds a little like Breaking The Chains. George's solo is excellent as he throws in some tap, some great bends and excellent shredding lines. The guitar tone is excellent as it sounds like the Scorpions guitar tone. This should have been a big hit. The riff is great too. Another one of my favorites.

9.Will the Sun Rise?- 10/10 A great melodic song. The vocals and riff are excellent. The chorus is one of the best on the album. George throws in another great fast melodic solo. This is one of my favorite Dokken songs and George plays with a lot of feel. Maybe my favorite song on the album. A masterpeice!

10.Till the Livin' End- 10/10 An excellent melodic, agressive, fast paced song with another great chorus. A classic George Lynch riff and excellent vocals from Don Dokken. George's solo is probably the best on this album as it has some of his fastest player ever and the high note Don hit's after the solo is excellent. Don's ending note hold and the ending drums and guitar are excellent too. A real classic track.

This is another brilliant album from Dokken. You can't go wrong with there 80's albums but this is very high on my list as Don's vocals and George's guitar work has never been better. Every song is a classic. This album is also more of a pop metal album than Tooth And Nail however it is very diverese and has 4 pop metal songs, 4 straight forward metal songs and 2 power ballads. The glossier production of this album sounds good too. The band is

this a real good 80's album from sammy and crew not as strong as standing hampton! but a must for hagar fans

5 out of 5 stars Break the locks and unleash this rock masterpiece!.......2005-05-26

Three lock box is vintage hagar, I love this album! The release of this 1983 was just a glimpse of things to come from Sammy Hagar for the NEXT 25 YEARS: Great vocals, superb songwriting, melodic & anthemic rock that filled a niche, then overflowed and overpowered most around it!

Three Lock Box is a rocker
Remote Love is a sweet poppy tune
Remember the heroes is a DEEP heart felt rock tune dedicated to all of our veterans!
Your love is driving me crazy - Great pop tune with excellent melody, great riffs on the guitar as well!
In the Room - Dark, spooky tune, quite a trip! Reminds me of some prog rock space tune or something of a meidevil background.
Rise of the Animal - The Room song jumps into this hard driving rock tune.

The rest of the tunes are fun and rockin' as well. If you have not heard sammy hagar, or liked some of his work with Van Halen, you should start with this album. I personally feel his best solo works are this, VOA, and Standing Hampton. All are gems, and all are multi-platinum recordings.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Sammy Hagar's Best.......2002-09-20

THREE LOCK BOX is good-time rock album that has some serious lyrics- "Remember The Heroes" is about Vietnam, and "I Wouldn't Change A Thing", describes life's experiences. The blend of Bob Seger/Ted Nugent Detroit rock, Skynyrd/Outlaws Southern rock, and Humble Pie/Foghat/Montrose heavy metal that was present on STANDING HAMPTON remains, but a bit of Journey-esque pop-rock creeps in on the hit single "Your Love Is Driving me Crazy." This and its predecessor, along with MARCHING TO MARS, RED VOODOO, TEN 13, and NOT 4 SALE, are Sammy Hagar's finest solo albums. The fact that Hagar currently advocates sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's recent trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as more funding for law enforcement, makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The best all-around Hagar album.......2002-08-08

There aren't as many hits here as on Sammy's predecessor "Standing Hampton" or the follow-up "VOA." Both of those come pretty close, but just because there's very little filler here, this marginally wins.

"Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" is Sam's biggest hit and my favorite song of his. It's almost never played on the radio anymore, though. It's a typical '80s Hard Rocker, but slightly more pop, due to keyboard use. Many other songs here use them too. "Remote Love" and "Never Give Up" are carbon copies and excellent album tracks. The other hits were the title track and "I Don't Need Love." These are more like his standard fare. The latter is also one of his best, fast-paced, sex and party, but 'safe' song.

"I Wouldn't Change A Thing" was, I believe, a minor hit that should've been bigger. One thing about this album that were LESS present in others was the slightly serious thoughts on top of the usual party rock. The part ballad "Remember the Hereoes" (about soldiers) was the only completely dramatic song, but it fits in well and is a nice addition. "Growing Up" was a self-explanatory look at just that. (One thing I like about Rock stars is they don't have an age limit for subjects. Sammy was in his late 30s when this came out, but he can talk about coming of age and make it sound totally natural). "In the Room" was another change. The only song I can't get into. A little darker, it talks about dreamland vs reality. "Rise of the Animal" is similar to this, but somewhat more musically engaging.

3 Lock Box is more or less forgotten probably since it's sandwitched between albums which have the near Metal of "One Way to Rock" and "Heavy Metal" as well as the classic road song "Can't Drive 55." By the time I discovered this, I was a die-hard fan of those too, so take my word, don't pass it up.

Writer-director Guy Ritchie's street-tough look at London's decrepit underworld and the unsavory dealings of four best friends whose cockiness is undercut by some serious trouble features a soundtrack of quick dialogue sound clips, a smattering of classic rock, pop, and reggae, and a few current submissions as well. Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves," known most to rock audiences by the Clash cover, is a great piece of political resistance and laidback dub groove. James Brown's "The Payback" and "The Boss" and Iggy and the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" stake out the sharp end, while the late Dusty Springfield paints the softer corner with "Spooky." Ocean Colour Scene delivers the backwards guitar driven "100 Mile High City," and Stretch's "Why Did You Do It?" is a great recreation of early '70s soul. --Rob O'Connor

Normally soundtracks don't find their way into my changer very often. I'll usually just put one or two tracks on a compilation disc. But this bad boy is a compilation disc already made with every song being top choice. The tracks on this CD were chosen be someone with taste as opposed to the usual bunch of Muppets. Enjoy!

Lots of comedians like to think of themselves as rock stars, but Leary makes good on that threat with Lock 'n Load. Leary's frantic concert ranting is intercut MTV-style with comic song parodies (including a gothic mocking of the Love Boat theme), idle chatter, noise bursts, sound collages, and guest spots from the likes of Janeane Garofalo (slamming Fiona Apple) and musicians Adam Roth and Greg Dulli. Leary takes no prisoners as he goes after Michael Flatley, Marv Albert, Hanson, the Kennedy clan, the pope, ecology activists, 7-Eleven counter help, fat Vegas gamblers, and even his own kids. He's at his angry, acid best when he takes on the annoying '90s trends of multiple body piercings, microbrews, and flavored coffee. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Whinig f-ing maggots.......2006-08-03

Leary is a darn funny guy. I do not care if he stole each and every joke from some other guy. He is a riot - and he put it out there. I am sick of reading all these little crybaby comments about how he has ripped off Hicks and blah, blah, blah. Go cry about it on some Hicks website, forum, message board, or whatever. Nobody cares about Hicks when trying to read a review of a DENIS LEARY CD. I do not know who this Hicks guy is, and I never want to know who he is, because of all the whining and crying going on here. Hicks apologists shut your cake-holes.

4 out of 5 stars This was the breakthrough, not "No Cure for Cancer".......2006-01-08

"No Cure for Cancer" is the top selling album that catapulted Leary to success, but here he develops into more of a unique individual. People always bug him about ripping off Bill Hicks: On No Cure for Cancer, he may have crossed the line a few times. But by this point he had headed in a different direction; rather than becoming a spiritualist and misanthrope like the late Hicks, Leary got married, had kids, and became the "crazy guy trying to adjust to mundane, family life and never quite fitting in". A bit commercial? Maybe. But Leary's always been a talented, aggressive performer, and here he's working with a fresh perspective as well.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest rants ever.......2005-09-06

The "Coffee" rant is one of the best I've ever heard. The fat f-cks routine was great and his jokes about his kids was excellent. My only complaint was that there some short songs that were lame. Still, there were so many great takes this album is well worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2005-01-14

I thoroughly enjoy listening to Dennis Leary rant and rave about life. But, this was a dissapointment. Too many skits (not even funny), this was more of a let down than I had hoped. There are moments where it is funny, but I do not recommend purchasing this

1 out of 5 stars Exact Bits Leary Stole from Hicks.......2005-01-07

Leary is a hack. He wasn't "influenced" by Bill Hicks, he STOLE material. That makes him a hack. How can you Leary fans argue with the definition of the word hack? Take it up with Webster's Dictionary.

The exact bits Leary stole are described in the book AMERICAN SCREAM on pages 201-202. Bill Hicks was incensed when he heard Leary's tape.

On behalf of Bill's memory, give credit to the original.

3 out of 5 stars A step down, but still not bad.......2007-05-24

In 1990 Ronnie James Dio released the fifth Dio album, Lock Up the Wolves. It was the first Dio album in three years and featured a whole new band. The results were very mixed, ranging from excellent to mediocre.

Like every other group Ronnie James Dio has ever been associated with, the musicmanship here is first-rate.The new band features drummer Simon Wright of AC/DC fame, and he fills Vinnie Appice's shoes very well. Bassist Teddy Cook is actually an improvement over Jimmy Bain; his lines are no less solid but much more interesting to listen to. Keyboardist Jens Johansson, formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, is not featured very heavily on this album but does a great job of adding texture. The new guitar player is an eighteen year old kid named Rowan Robertson, and he's actually very impressive, displaying a tasteful combination of chops and melody and coming up with some killer riffs. As for the vocals... well, it's Ronnie James Dio. He's at his absolute best here; this may well be his finest recorded vocal performance. This album is superbly recorded as well.

The songwriting is unfortunately where this album falls a little flat. Certainly there's great material here, but it's surrounded by an awful lot of filler. Interestingly enough the fast rockers, which are usually high points on a Dio record, are amongst the weakest tracks on the album with "Wild One", "Night Music", and "Walk On Water" coming across sounding generic and tired. One notable exception is the wonderfully paranoid "Why Are They Watching Me", which rocks. The songs which stand out on the album are slow yet heavy in a way that reminds me of Black Sabbath. Such songs include "Born On the Sun" which is the best track on the album, "Between Two Hearts" featuring some killer riffs, and the epic "Lock Up The Wolves". There are also a couple of interesting departures from the norm on this album, such as the blues-meets-metal "Evil On Queen Street" and the world-weary ballad "My Eyes".

Overall there's more good than bad here, but after four classic albums in a row (not to mention the classics he'd previously recorded with Rainbow and Black Sabbath) we'd all come to expect a lot more from Ronnie James Dio. This is worth picking up, but I'd at least get Dream Evil, Holy Diver, and Master Of The Moon first.

5 out of 5 stars Dio's Most Underated Album.......2007-01-14

"Lock Up the Wolves" is probably my second favorite Dio album. It did not sell that well, got little or no radio airplay, but is his strongest work since leaving Black Sabbath in my opinion. The original Dio band is long gone by this point with only Ronnie himself remaining. Dio brings in a young 18 year old guitarist named Rowan Robertson to fill the guitar duties and he does so admirably. Former AC/DC skinsman Simon Wright is on drums, and Swedish prog keyboard maestro Jens Johansson (Stradivarius, Mastermind) is also on hand along with bassist Teddy Cook. This is the first Dio album to feature a truly great keyboard player and for me at least, the difference is humungous. The keys are still mostly in the background, but what Johansson does would be missed if it was not there. Much of this album is slow and brooding which makes it in my opinion the most Sabbath like of any of Dio's solo discs. Pretty much every song on the album is good and many of them are great. One of my favorite all time Dio songs closes out the album. "My Eyes" is a reflection on his career up to that point as he references Rainbow and Sabbath in a weary look back in time. The single and opening track "Wild One" is a rocker that ranks up with the hardest and fastest music Dio has done. "Born On The Sun", "Night Music" , "Between Two Hearts", "Lock Up The Wolves", "Evil On Queen Street", "Walk On Water", man they are all great tunes. Dio's vocals are in top form throughout and even most of his lyrics are well thought out and meaningful. I actually rank this album better than all of his 80's output. Many Dio fans won't agree with that assessment, but I think this is by far his most underrated album.

4 out of 5 stars Four and A Half Stars-DO NOT Write This One Off!!!.......2006-12-27

The ONLY issue I have with LUTW is the length: clocking in at just over 60 minutes, the overall mid to slow tempo of the album DOES make it drag a bit. So within that context, some criticism is justified. Other than that, Dio managed to release a fifth album that just barely misses the "classic/essential" category of the band's first four albums. The classic line-up is no longer present; the band Ronnie James assembled here is quite a motley crue: Drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC) fits in well, keyboardist Jens Johannssen (Yngwie, etc.) I would have expected more from, bassist Teddy Cook I know nothing about. Finally, we have the star of the album: teenage axe prodigy Rowan Robertson, who is quite worthy of the priviledge of working with RJD. It's a shame he hasn't become more well known since this album; he is an EXCEPTIONAL player. The sound on LUTW is much darker and bluesier than any other Dio album. And Slower. But again, don't let that scare you off! MOST of the songs are well written, produced and performed. For newcomers, I recommend Holy Diver and/or Last in Line. For established fans...shame on you for not owning or appreciating this fine effort!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pulse-Pounding!.......2006-07-24

Lock Up the Woves is an incredible metal album!
Powerful, powerful, powerful...
This is a classic album that no true Dio fan, or any fan of hard rock and heavy metal for that matter, should be without.
Every song had electrifying guitar riffs that absolutely blow the listener away.
Although slightly below "Holy Diver," this album is absolutely breathtaking!

5 out of 5 stars An underrated classic........2006-03-02

This album is as good as Holy Diver, Last In Line, Dream Evil and Sacred Heart. The slow songs are great and the faster power metal songs are great too. Ronnie's voice has never been better and Rowan Robertson is as good if not better than any other Dio guitarist. Robertson was only 16 but his riffs and solos are amazing. The best songs are Born On The Sun, Lock Up The Wolves, Walk On water, Why Are They Watching Me and My Eyes. Every song on this album is worth listening too. If you like Dio's other albums or good metal music in general than buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUNDTRACK!!! UK version.......2002-07-10

I nearly bought the US version until I stumbled upon this one, compared and realised that so much was left off the US one. If you like this one, you will like the Snatch Soundtrack. I did get the US one on that. But the only difference are the dialouge tracks, which I was able to live without, considering I own Snatch VHS and have it memorized. in fact i have L S & 2S B memorized too, but it is ten times funnier.

Guy Ritchie is not only an amazing director, but he's attached the most unusual and awesome mix of music to this classic-to-be movie. This CD is for anyone who enjoys something away from the normal. BE WARNED!! There are two versions! I myself accidentally bought the American version, HUGE MISTAKE!!!! It lacked many delicious songs that were vital for maximum enjoyment. Please do NOT make the same mistake I did, buy the Imported version, do your research, you'll see. ENJOY!!

5 out of 5 stars Rock and roll roller coaster soundtrack.......1999-05-07

First, go see the movie. Then by magnetic force you will be compelled to buy the CD in order to once again experience the rock and roll rollercoaster ride of the movie. An ecletic mix of rock, James Brown blues, and brit pop - along with a nice dose of classic soundbite snipits from the movie (a la Pulp Fiction). When I first got this soundtrack I was reading the playlist and thought "who are all these artists?" Now I will go out of my way to find their albums. The whole CD is great driving music - don't skip any songs!

3 out of 5 stars Second Rate.......2005-10-04

An extra star to this recording, as it is the only complete recording of the stage version of Student Prince ever made. Kudos for the idea.

Unfortunately, the performance is not up to the standards of any of the numerous excerpt recordings. The bright spot is bass-baritone Norman Bailey in the supporting role of Dr. Engel, who even at the age of 56 sounds terrific. Although his voice is a bit heavy and his tesiturra a bit low for the part, he sounds perfect for the avuncular role of the Prince's mentor/chaperone.

It is hard to believe that the Philharmonia of London can sound this bad, or that Edwards can conduct a theater orchestra so ineptly. The orchestra sounds like an oom-pah band, and vocal entrances and attacks are softened beyond comprehension. The Ambrosian chorus sounds the worst of any chorus to record Student Prince. I can only ascribe at least *part* of the blame to an inept sound engineer.

David Rendall is quite adequate in the title role and I would be delighted to hear him in a live performance. Unfortunately, his recorded competition -- Mario Lanza, Robert Rounseville, Gordon McRae -- outclass him by far. (And he's lucky that the fabulous Richard Crooks, Romberg's first choice for the original production, didn't record it.)

Marilyn Hill Smith sounds like Jeanette McDonald suffering a bad head cold, with a blanket over her head and a big dose of soporific medicine in her stomach. She has neither power nor tone, and she even struggles to keep up the tempo in "Come Boys". Considering the sopranos that have recorded Student Prince -- most notably Roberta Peters and Dorothy Kirsten -- casting Ms. Smith in the part is inexplicable. She is simply inadequate.

Most of all, I cannot fathom the recording quality, which, to put it kindly, is spotty. Some pieces are barely acceptable in sound quality, but others sound as if they were recorded in somebody's garage in mono.

In summary, this is the worst version of "Student Prince" that I have heard recorded, but it gets an extra star for including the complete score.

4 out of 5 stars A long overdue entry in the list of complete recorded shows.......2000-06-30

The British seem to be doing a more thorough job lately in giving us complete scores of Broadway musicals. They have so far given us the first complete recordings of "South Pacific" and "The King and I", and whatever the merits of those recordings may be, their example puts to shame the American ones, who,at this point, are woefully behind in giving most of our greatest shows complete recordings.

And now the British have shown up the Americans once again. This is the first recording of Sigmund Romberg's Viennese-American operetta"The Student Prince"(lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly) to feature the entire score of the show, and for the first time ever, audiences who have never seen the show can now get a taste of what a huge score it is,although part of the hugeness stems from the fact that about six of the many memorable tunes that make up this score are sung at least twice--some as many as four times. And although "The Student Prince" does not have a score that can measure up to the best of Jerome Kern,George Gershwin,Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc., it still boasts such songs as "The Drinking Song", "Deep in my Heart,Dear", and the haunting "Serenade".

The sound is quite good, with a few reservations discussed below, and the orchestrations, from the New York City Opera presentation, are based on,and apparently quite similar to the ones featured in the 1924 original Broadway production. The voices are,on the whole, excellent, even if David Rendall,as the Prince, occasionally sounds as if his tenor got stuck somewhere in his throat and something were preventing it from truly ringing out. Wagnerian baritone Norman Bailey,as Dr.Engel,is clearly past his prime, but still has quite a good voice. And Marilyn Hill Smith's Kathie is truly gorgeous, even if she can't quite meet the standard set by Roberta Peters in the excellent 1963 Columbia LP of excerpts from the show. The only drawback in this recording--and it is truly a shame--is that the diction of the singers is not as clear as it should be. I don't know if it's the placement of microphones or the British accents, but in order to get a full appreciation of the music, I had to crank up the volume because the singers sometimes don't seem as if they're singing loud enough.(However, the effect here isn't NEARLY as bad as that on the soundtrack CD of Zeffirelli's film of Verdi's "Otello".)

Nevertheless, this recording is a milestone in recorded musical theatre, and should be heard. It is a sharp rebuke to recording studios who have made up their mind that this music is too old-fashioned and have regularly ignored the world of Broadway operetta as brought to life by Sigmund Romberg,Rudolf Friml, and Victor Herbert.

5 out of 5 stars F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Music, stupid words, and at times boring.......2004-02-17

I guess I would have to be the decenting voice here. I really thought this opera was a waste. I really care less if Gertude Stein wrote the words. There is nothing in this work. The music is interesting, that I will admit. The singing is HORRIBLE, not because the notes are sung badly, but once again the English is incomprehensible (and to make things worse, the meaning of the libretto is just as incomprehensible; combine the two and what in Heaven's name is really being communicated). Virgil Thomas has never excited me as a composer. His operas are so forgettable, and this one is no exception. I wonder, though, what the great voice of Leontyne Price sounded like in the work, after all, she did sing in it. But even her English is incomprehensible much of the time when singing these sorts of operas (I have some highlights of Barber's Anthony and Cleopatra with her singing Cleopatra's death scene, and I believe that is about all we will ever find of Price in this work; of the entire scene I think you may understand what would amount to half a sentence of the words). I feel really alienated when listening to an opera and I can't figure out what they are singing about. I have no trouble with singers singing German, French, Italian, or even Russian. Most of the time their diction is super, and if you speak the languages, you are well aware of what is going on. English is my native language, and I find it so disheartening when I have more ease understanding everything sung in a foreign language than when I hear it sung in my native tongue. I would advice all librettist of the English language to not bother writing any real words, just make some groupings of sounds, and throw in a harsh consonant or two, and we would understand just as much of what you write as we do when you write real words. And I guess there is nothing wrong with being strange with the language as Stein is, for her words are as silly as those by E.E. Cummings, total nonsense. I rated it a four star because it is a great representation of the work, a million times better than the recording of "Mother of us all." It left me cold, and it bored me. In many ways, I was left feeling, "well, when she learns to actually write words that are worth listening to, and he learns to actually write music and what it is all about, then we will have something worthy listening to." Add to that, when the singers actually learn to sing their own mother tongues with meaning and with clarity. It is terrible to feel that way after listening to a work. Sadly, that is what this recording did for me.

5 out of 5 stars Allusively elusively and very much as it may.......2001-09-23

I've characterized this as "surealists invading a camp meeting"... but that doesn't do it justice. Much of Stein's text seems cryptic (though it sings beautifully in Thompson's hands), but moments like the chorus singing:

"St. Teresa being photographed dressed like a lady and then they taking out her head changed it to a nun and a nun a saint and a saint so."

followed by St. Teresa singing:

"Can women have wishes?"

are crystal-clear. Thompson invokes Wagner and Puccini, adds (with Stein's help) a patriotic opening and a Spanish ballet, and even tosses in a witty though perfectly appropriate parody of "The Trumpet Will Sound" from Handel's "The Messiah" while never straying too far from the two-chord base of the music. The singers and sonorities are wonderful. This is timeless music and text, wonderfully performed, and certainly worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Say what....?.......2001-03-28

What fun this opera is! Virgil Thomson likes to play with the orchestra and singers as much as Gertrude Stein likes to play with the English language. It's nonsense, but it's not. Part of the fun is trying to make some sense of the cryptic libretto....indeed, you can't help it. Your brain wants to make something of it. The music almost gives it logic, but (cleverly) stops short of filling in the blanks for you. (Regardless of the original intent, the opera has something to say about the difficulties of expressing the divine experience....I think) True, Thomson's music is not plumbing the depths of the human psyche, but it is inventive and witty. Indeed, many modern "neo-romantics" could learn a lot about being accessible without being sentimental or schmaltzy. Well worth multiple listenings.

5 out of 5 stars Unimportant.......2001-03-21

I can't understand why the presentation of this item omits the relevant fact of who wrote the libretto. The text is by Gertrude Stein. Virgil Thompson asked Gertrude Stein for an opera, and she wrote the text.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful music and complete, but prefer the Thomson CD.......1998-11-14

This is wonderful music -- inventive, tunefull, distinctive. This recording is complete and digital, but the RCA re-issue of Thomson's 47 is to be preferred. I own both.
