Album Description

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, pianist Michel Camilo's career spans three decades, two hemispheres and a range of jazz and classical styles. Since joining the Telarc label, he has crafted brilliant recordings in the trio, solo and orchestral settings. Each of them has captured the essence and spirit of this ever-evolving artist at various points along his creative journey.

Following up on the intimate 'Solo' in 2004 and the adventurous 'Rhapsody in Blue' in 2006, Camilo makes his triumphant return to the straightahead jazz trio setting with 'Spirit of the Moment'. With sympathetic backing from Cuban-born bassist Charles Flores and drummer Dafnis Prieto, the leaner, three-man configuration allows plenty of room for the fiery keyboard work that has become Camilo's trademark.

What can I say.....another superb album from Michel Camilo. The group is tight and the arrangements are meticulous, from track 1 you are taken on a journey that twists and turns from the classic fun of a light blues/jazz into the deepest blue channels of the soul and back again to the present moment filled with light. Michel, you are a master of your craft and a guide for the listener whose ears lucky enough to discover you.Spirit of the Moment

Latin Jazz Virtuosity.......2007-06-14

My first taste of Michel Camilo came years ago when I heard One More Once playing in a local music store. I liked what I heard and bought it but then forgot about him until last year when I picked up both of his excellent Tomatito collaborations. Those had me so excited, I didn't hesitate to order Spirit of the Moment as soon as I saw it had been released.
If you haven't heard Camilo before, you are in for a treat here. This is pure Latin jazz virtuosity. If Camilo had strayed from his roots over the years, you'd never know it when you hear Spirit of the Moment.
Though I like most of the CD, I mostly prefer the uptempo pieces. My favorites are: the splendid opener Just Now; the delicious title cut; the thrilling Repercussions; the Miles Davis/Bill Evans composition Nardis, which carries a whiff of Spain on its notes; and the ever-changing Trilogy.
Spirit of the Moment represents a successful return to the jazz trio format for Camilo and his group. Note that I give it four stars only because it starts very strongly and finishes on a weak note. A closing tune of the caliber of Just Now or the title cut would have sent this soaring into five-star territory.
If you are a fan of either Latin jazz or piano jazz in any way, I strongly recommend this CD. You'll find yourself enjoying this over and over.

Como siempre, Michel me sorprende con su estilo , su sonido , sus composiciones y sus arreglos. Tengo que decir que Camilo es un virtuoso extraordinario y que por tal razon no deberia sorprenderme con sus magnificas ejecuciones, pero es que creo que cada vez se supera a si mismo. Es como un buen vino...mejora con el tiempo.
Este es un gran CD para oir y disfrutar con tranquilidad. Es la mejor manera de apreciar sus ejecuciones.
Esto es Jazz del mejor.

This CD an outstanding for the sportsman. Anyone who engages in any aspect of the outdoors and appreciates the bond with nature will understand and appreciate the songs and lyrics from this CD. The message that uncle Ted puts out is clear and motivates others to enjoy the spirit of the wild.

Five Stars for Fred Bear Alone.......2005-02-12

This album is great. Ted's guitar and vocals are very very good. The album isn't as good as Cat Scratch Fever, but it's worth the 10 bucks just for Fred Bear. All the people who said this album was bad and the lyrics & guitar were laughable don't know what music is. They couldn't play a guitar if they tried (no-talent morons), otherwise they'd realize that Ted was one of the revolutionary guitarists of the 70's. Just listen to his solos and you know he's the real deal. All of his songs are interesting and innovative. This album's totally worth it.

The song lyrics are laughable, the vocals are sorry, and the guitar is even below Ted's previous capabilities. All in all a pretty pathetic effort from Ted the Sledge.

don't get me started.....it STINKS. don't get me wrong, i love a little wang dang sweet doe tang as much as any guy, but this has to to be one of the top three or four worst albums ever produced (and i own tubthumping by chumbawumba). fred bear in particular was such a poor and pathetic tribute to the legend that had it been written 15 or 20 years ago....it still would have stunk. this guy has no guitar chops and has the most asinine lyrics i've ever heard. pure garbage...use this one as a coaster.

I love Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music, so I've been collecting their music for other holidays as well. I wish they'd avoided the occasional speaking parts in this but I love most of the musical parts. They did a good job on the Aaron Copland piece! I'll be listening to it other than on July 4th.

This album contains the sound of the "Rolling Om," a continuous tone created by a roomful of people chanting the OM mantra. Goldman recorded this rolling sound with the latest technology underpinned by his knowledge of sacred sound, intentionality and psychoacoustics. The sound utilizes the Pythagorean ratio of 2:3, which is an aspect of the Golden Mean, and vibrates in the keynote of C (256 cycles per second), which is considered a harmonic of the resonant frequency of the earth's electro magnetic field.

On the first listen, it just sounded like a slowly evolving hum with flutes weaving in and out of the mix. Subsequent listens have revealed the beauty of this gentle humming sound, whilst the "flutes" are really voice overtones as I subsequently discovered. These overtones or harmonics that float in and out of the mix were created by Goldman and Alec Sims and are the natural result of an overtone singer chanting the OM. They colour the overall sound in an intriguing way, ensuring a gentle but profound spiritual listening experience.

The CD booklet contains fascinating information on mantras, the pronunciation of the OM, the creation of this recording, the science of psychoacoustics and the qualities of harmonics. As I write this the Steve Vrana and James Carragher "Spotlight Reviews" have thoroughly described this excellent compilation.

I would add that an older('94) version The Essential George Jones: The Spirit Of Country contains a 36-page booklet with writing credits, release dates and chart info for all 44 songs. Also included, a history of the at-that-time 70 year old legend, quotes from famous admirers, and many interesting photos.

For a 2 CD set this is unbeatable.

A good starting point.......2007-03-10

If you are just now discovering George Jones, this two CD set will serve as a good starting point. For the truly hardcore Jones fan however, this set is found wanting. Cup of Loneliness-The Complete Mercury Recordings is a much more complete compilation though it does lack his hits from the 70's and 80's.

It's difficult to get a complete discography of George Jones due to the fact that he changed labels about as often as he changed his socks in the early to mid 60's. Not included on this set are his Musichoir hits (Love Bug, 4033, We're Watching Our Step, etc), nor the minor successes such as Where Corn Won't Grow, Burn All the Honky Tonks Down and many others. That said I am NOT damning this album with faint praise. All the selections included here are truly essential George Jones songs to have. You could spend your money on a much more incomplete set than this very easily and have half the music, but as I mentioned earlier the hardcore fan will have a little trouble with what's not included.

George Jones, at 75 years old, is still the single greatest County Music performer of our time. He is symbolic of a time when Country Music had it's finest days. His album, "The Spirit Of Country" is truly a masterpiece and will bring many years of pleasurable listening to anyone who is lucky enough to own it.

BEWARE! (of remakes).......2006-03-29

I admit that I'm probably a much less rabid George Jones fan than most of the people who have contributed reviews here. I bought this collection mainly for 2 songs -- "The Race is On" and "Good Year for the Roses". You can imagine my disappointment when I played "Race" and it was either a re-make or just re-mixed terribly with the vocals turned up so loud, they drown out the music! Then, I listened to "Good Year" and discovered to my horror that it was a complete re-make! What the hell? I don't want to hear a re-made version -- I, like almost everyone in their right minds would, want to hear the original versions! I thought this was common knowledge! C'mon! This is ridiculous!

Classic Country.......2005-05-14

This is a great two disc set.
You can not go wrong in buying it.
You would also do well to add to it by getting "10 years of Hits", which has many of the same songs but some very good ones not on here.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

A wonderful new cd by a brilliant vocalist who deserves much more notice. Surrounded by some of this country's finest musicians Kendra Shank pays tribute to mentor Abby Lincoln: and she does Abby as only Kendra could. Kendra's vocal range is amazing, her phrasing impeccable, she has produced a cd worthy of many listenings. Each time you put it on you'll hear something new. This isn't easy background music - this is the stuff you put on, stop for a few minutes and just get lost in the music. I highly recommend this CD.

The Underrrated Extolling the Underrated.......2007-03-08

Amongst the great old-time jazz singers, probably none is more underrated than the great Abbey Lincoln. Unsurprisingly, this is the first Abbey Lincoln tribute album ever. How fitting that the bearer of that tribute is Kendra Shank, one of the most underrated singers on the scene today and one who calls Ms. Lincoln a Mentor.

In his liner notes, Gary Giddins predicts that this won't be the last Abbey Lincoln tribute album, but will be the standard by which future ones will be measured. I don't disagree, but I'd put it this way: this album is to Abbey Lincoln like Carmen McRae's "Sings 'Lover Man' and Other Songs of Billie Holiday" is to Lady Day. Both are albums which match up very favorably to the best albums of the tributee--and that's saying one hell of a lot.

What makes this album, consisting of difficult yet accessible, heavily African-influenced, music so good is the musicianship of the 7 musicians. Check out the raw emotion on "The World Is Falling Down", a 9-11 memorial, for example, or the sensitive interplay among the musicians on "Down Here Below." "World" just chokes me up, every time I hear it.

Kendra Shank sounds great, to be sure. She has a clarion, bell-ringing timbre to her voice; but rarely has a singer sounded more musical than here. Her intonation (for the most part), her diction, her phrasing, her emotion, her breath control (check out her last notes on "I Got Thunder" and "Being Me"--wow!!) and her sound are just spot on, consistently. Whether the rhythms are tricky ("I Got Thunder" or "The Music is the Magic") or the chord changes are difficult ("Bird Alone"), she knocks it all out like nothing could be easier. She is not merely a "singer with the band"; she is a musician.

And what musicians she has to play with! Her usual quartet with Frank Kimbrough (p.--one of the finest in the business), Dean Johnson (bs--probably the most-featured non-singing musician here, if there is one) and Tony Moreno (drums) are joined by Ben Monder (g.--also one of the finest around), Billy Drewes (saxes and bass clarinet), and Gary Versace (acc.--including a very charming duet with Ms. Shank, "Natas"). The musicianship of these 7 is stunning. Let me give you but two examples:

Ben Monder is capable of blowing anybody off the bandstand with his playing. But on "The Music Is the Magic", he plays his intricate, note-filled lines so softly that you have to listen carefully to hear him. Like the others, he is going for the gestalt, which is an African sound. The idea is to sublimate the ego and let the sound enhance what everyone else is doing. He does so.

And on "Throw It Away", Kimbrough dampens the strings on his piano so that the instrument sounds like a marimba--because the sound of a marimba better works with the sound the musicians are trying to create for this song than the sound of a piano. But then he plays the piano like Bobby Hutcherson or David Samuels, for example, might play the marimba. Again, the idea is to sublimate the ego and go for the gestalt.

The only thing that bothers me about this exquisite album has nothing to do with the album itself. These musicians recorded this album in early January of 2005. Kendra Shank co-produced it, and I suspect shopped it to a whole bunch of labels, not having the resources to distribute it herself, before the tiny label of "Challenge Records" bit in 2006. And even then, Challenge didn't release it until about 3 weeks ago.

It makes you wonder: how many other "unreleasable gems" like this are out there? This is true art; and if the public at large never gets the opportunity to hear it, where does that leave us as a society? I guess I should just count our blessings that this got released at all. It is truly Grammy-worthy material. RC

One Of My Newest Favorites.......2004-07-14

I've just discovered the awesome marches of John Phillip Sousa in the past year. I have several very good Sousa compilations that feature his best known Marches like "Stars & Stripes Forever" and "King Cotton." What I enjoy about this compilation is that it contains a plethora of great Sousa Marches, most of which I never heard before.

I'm strictly a layperson when it comes to classical music, so if my take on Sousa sounds choppy & neanderthol, please pardon me!

This is the third Sousa CD I bought that is conducted by the United States Marine Band, and so far, I enjoy their take on John Phillip Sousa Marches heads above the rest. When a Sousa March moves me, it is because it is more than uplifting; it is sheer elation, a pure mood enhancer when waking up in the morning. "The President's Own" delivers this spirit better than any other source I have heard. The pace is brisk, but not rushed. I've heard other bands' versions of Sousa where the conductor seems to let the chief instruments overshadow others (the flute often seems to be one of the characters drowned out), where the instrumentals in The Marine Band sound so beautifully distributed that I often find myself listening to a March I've heard countless times, and suddenly hear a rhythm or melody from a wind instrument I had never noticed before.

If you have never heard many of John Phillips Sousa's Marches before, this is a good place to start. "Fairest Of the Fair" starts with such an optimistic and energetic pace that it is a hard act for the following tracks to follow. This was the first time I heard the March, and it has become one of my top five Sousa favorites. The next track delivers with "Hands Across the Sea." The persons who compiled this collection have a great ear for Marches as nothing disappointed me. Two tunes that especially grabbed me are "High School Cadets" and the exotic "The Picador."

John Phillip Sousa is one of the most enjoyable musical discoveries I have come across in years. Give this CD a shot, I think you will find it a fabulous listening experience!

GOOD OLE SOUSA.......2004-01-14

Indeed it is a must have classic of a truly great American Composer. Taken from the vaults of the amazing and historic Marine Band this is a classic for any true American Band Lover. The product is superb and well mixed, Bravo to its creators and bravo to those who bring this hard to find music to us in such excellent form.

Not Great Sousa!.......2003-11-07

Despite the fact that this is the Marine band playing Sousa I would not rcommend this product. The selection of Sousa marches is standard, the length of the CD is too short for the price, and the recording quality is poor. There are better Sousa albums elsewhere.

I love Triangulo and Live at the Blue Note, but this album is lame. Who is this Dafnis Prieto guy? Is he playing with feather dusters? As much as I love Camilo's keywork, this album proves one thing to me- the trio is boring without Hernandez behind the drum kit. His dynamic, rhythmic style is very sorely missed on this album.

I recently saw the Michel Camilo Trio at the International Jazz Festival in Bern, Switzerland. They performed some songs from the new album, including a debut performance of Liquid Crystal. It was literally BREATHTAKING!

Look forward to a tour-de-force of latin jazz at its best. As with all of Michel Camilo's ensemble works, this trio has an extremely vibrant and exuberant personality. Michel seems to command the piano in an utterly ethereal fashion that oftens leave the listener awestruck. Charles Flores is coming into his own as Michel's bassist. In his sophomore performance with the trio, he is much more expressive and makes his instrument speak directly to the soul of the audience. Rounding out this trio is drummer, Dafnis Prieto. A critically acclaimed composer and bandleader in his own right, Dafnis gives this ensemble exactly the percussive edge it requires. With a uniquely latin flavor, he lays down syncopated rhythms that make you wonder whether he has a small percussion section backing him up!

Although the band stomps through uptempo selections, fans should also look forward to the lush ballads presented by the trio. All three musicians use their instruments to communicate emotion that can place you in a different world while listening. From upbeat latin, to swing, to ballads, this ensemble is truly first rate! Michel has never disappointed his fans, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed by his latest release.

Good album on par with their usual qaulity harmony and selection of material.

The Statlers are among the best in the business. Music can be such a huge part of peoples lives, we sometimes need the harmony to get over hard times, or rememeber simpler times we have grown so fond of.

These classics are heart felt, songs like "Blesssed Be" are reminders to us that God loves us, and we will all get the chance to hear his word, so listen up.

These wonderful songs paint a picture right from the Bible.
Stories of David, and a song to remind us the "King" is coming, You'll enjoy these Statler version Hymms for some time.

When I saw that nobody has yet to leave a review of this album I jumped at the chance to bring my perspective to a web site that has many.many visitors.

This album is a great rush hour traffic ride, it will calm the nerves and you'll learn a lot listening to the message.
