Has it's place..........2007-07-24
I understand that Michael's songs are available on the Totally Buble album, and I also understand that Sinatra's songs are available on other albums. So what's the big deal? If you, or someone you know, enjoys both of these fine crooners, and the "swing" style of song, then get the album!
I have a hard time believing that Michael would say such things as mentioned above - especially because the reviewer didn't cite the exact location of such statement in print or online. He's just not that kind of person to say such a thing seriously. (He may have been kidding around, as it's much like him to do so.)
Either way, songs like "That's How It Goes" and "I Get A Kick Out Of You" are true classics, and can be a major relief during a long car ride or even while prancing around cleaning the house. No matter - they're great songs, great music, and great voices.
Buyers Beware.......2007-07-15
These are the same songs from Totally Buble.
From review of Totally Buble
Although this CD is Michael Buble who does have a great voice, and shows to be a big star some day, he DID NOT wish to have this CD released! This is what he had to say about it himself:
"Totally Buble" is not an album that I wanted to be released. They were songs I recorded for a film called "Totally Blonde" many years ago before I was signed to 143/Reprise Records. The decision to release it as an album was made by the film's producer, and I had no control over stopping him.
It is important for everyone to know, that I only want to release quality music to my fans by offering my best work and I sincerely apologize if you purchased this album." - Michael Buble

uplifting.......2007-01-16
I saw this broadcast in 1991 or 1992 and have it on video. My only regret is that the concert is not available as a DVD, because the wonder is as much in the impassioned and dramatic 'conversations' between the three stars as in the sounds they produce. Still, until then, this is unforgettable stuff.
not too good, not too bad.......2007-01-09
this was an okay cd. it had some good songs i liked, but it was not the best christmas cd i've heard.
December 8, 1991 Must Have Been Quite A Night In NYC.......2003-12-14
December 8, 1991 must have been a great night in New York City, especially at Carnegie Hall. On this evening, three outstanding performers backed by a great orchestra and two different choirs joined forces for a Christmas concert. The fruit of this effort is the recording A CARNEGIE HALL CHRISTMAS CONCERT.
When Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, and Wynton Marsalis collaborate in a concert, how can it be anything but an event? This disc shows just how phenomenal event this concert must have been. Each performer had ample opportunity to demonstrate the performer's individual talents, but there are also many duets with Battle and von Stade as well as works where all three perform together. The Orchestra of St. Luke's is conducted by Andre Previn and has a sumptuous sound. The American Boychoir and the Christmas Concert Chorus add backups that enhance so many of the arrangements. Battle and Von Stade's rendition of "Gesu Bambino" is probably one of the best recordings of this beautiful carol. The "Evening Prayer" from HANSEL AND GRETEL is a highlight as well. Winton Marsalis and his septet display their talents in jazz versions of "Winter Wonderland" and "We Three Kings." There is a great Christmas medley that concludes the disc that is simply vocal and orchestral fireworks at their best.
My only critique, or pet peeve might be the better way of expressing it, would be "The Twelve Days of Christmas." This particular arrangement has the gifts in a different order than the standard version, but since this could be open to dispute, and in the spirit of the Christmas holiday, I won't consider this a strike against the album.
I'll say it again: December 8, 1991 must have been a great night in New York City, especially at Carnegie Hall.
Voices of Angels.......2003-11-21
The stars must have been aligned perfectly, all must have been right with the world on that night of December 8, 1991 in NYC's Carnegie Hall when this Christmas concert was filmed, because it is an example, one of those rare instances when everything falls into place perfectly.
On this particular night Kathleen Battle, Frederica Von Stade, Wynton Marsalis and Andre Previn performed, not only with their instruments but with their hearts as well. All the performers relate and connect to this often performed material in ways others simply do not. This is secular Holiday music performed with fervor and an emotional connection that borders on the religious.
The highlight of this recording is the 17 minute "American Songs" (I Wonder as I Wander, Who Was Mary, etc) performed primarily by Battle and Von Stade that is so exquisite as to be otherworldly.
Christmas Concerts can be corny or at worst, maudlin. But on this particular night in 1991, the angels sang and the heavens opened and called forth these artists to perform not only with their voices but with their souls as well. This is an emotional experience that is not to be missed.
Makes your heart sing!.......2003-11-18
This is a wonderful CD. The entire performance is absolutely perfect. Its the first Christmas CD we listen to every year and now my children start asking to hear it around Thanksgiving. I can't count the number of people I've given this to as a gift. We're are on our second copy!

Customer Reviews:
Zip Gun Bop.......2004-06-28
The first album from Royal Crown Revue, pioneers of Neo-Swing and kings of gangster bop. Sound is not that big, but they are fabulous anyway! Here you'll find original Zip Gun Bop and Hey Pachuco!. Daydreamin' is a wonderful vocal ballad. Eddie Nichols sounds fabulous, Stern brothers (Adam-bass, Mark-drums and Jamie-alto sax) with Mando Dorame and James Achor too.
Primo!.......1998-09-24
Lacking the brass of Scott Steen, this album still is quite near perfection. "Stormy Weather" is classic, and "Cold Shower" is insanely fast and fun. "Swingin' All Day" makes you want to do just that. Not the best of their releases, but still a must-have.
A Great Start.......1998-08-31
This album swings from start to finish. They do indeed prove themselves to be the kings of the gangster bop. If you enjoy "Mugzy's Move", you need to hear this predicessor.
Before they were stars..........1998-07-20
If you want to know what the boys of RCR were doing before "Mugzy's Move," check this out. It doesn't swing quite as hard as their later work, but they've still got that jive going that will make your toes tap all day long. If you're a true fan of the band, this is a must have: it's got "Stormy Weather" and the early versions of "Hey, Pachuco" and "Zip Gun Bop." If you're just getting into RCR, or swing altogether, it's a great buy, too. They are the quintessential neo-swing band.

they are great! 3rd time buying this cd!!!.......2006-06-21
i heard this cd years ago, some friends introduced it to me. then i got to see them live and the show was awesome. i just bought this cd b/c i have bought it 2 other times, but people keep borrowing it and never giving it back--i guess that says something good about the music on the cd. great cd, try it out, you'll love it.
Modern Swing Must Have - Chicago Suburb fan.......2002-02-24
For a first effort this is a great album. Their is pleny of fun on the album. They pull of all aspects of music, jazz, soul, early R&B. The rhythm section is strong and just a makes you wanna dance. Ross Bon vocals are great, adds just the right touch to make every song his own. The horn section is also not bad. They put in a good effort. "Rag Mopp" is a most listen to, if you don't like that song then there is something wrong with you. It must be pointed out that the first tack "Jumpin' At The Green Mill" hooks you right and sets you up for what is to come. "Buzz Buzz Buzz" is just a classic and when if first bought is album in 96 is listened to that track over and over again for just how well the band plays together.
If you a fan of jazz and like people like Ella, or Billy, or dare I even type it Bennett then this is the album for you. There is enough fun going on here to make anyone feel good.
Upbeat swing at its best.......2001-06-10
The Mighty Blue Kings play an upbeat, vocals-driven brand of swing that is just fun to listen to -- either live at the Green Mill or on your way to work in the morning. The band are all very talented musicians, but the featured instrument is definitely Ross Bon's voice. I highly recommend this album.
This band is great, even my daughter loved it ").......1999-07-13
These guys are awsome. My husband and I were at the Munster Festival and we just absolutely loved these guys so we went out and bought this cd and I would like to say how absolutely great it is. My daughter loves it AND so do her friends. This does not happen everyday. We also bought there other cd's so we have them all. So if you don't know if you should buy this cd then just re-read this and then go out and buy it.
Bues Kings are the Swing Kings.......1999-06-01
MBK swing cats. No doubt. They've got all the clubs jumpin' and swingin' in Dayton and Cincinnati. This cd is awesome but I don't think it earned a 5 star because it doesn't compare to the rich and mellow sound of the Blues Jumpers, or the raw and hardcore sound of Royal Crown Revue. But this cd is a must have for any hep cat or kitten out there. So lace up your wing tips and saddle shoes and start swingin' to the Mighty Blues Kings.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Compilation-Mini Box Set.......2005-09-14
This is a fairly decent mini-box set of some swing artists, but it is by no means a large collection or an indepth overview of the Swing Era. It is, however, a nice little collection of some of the main showman groups of the Swing Era. The crackle sounds from the original vinyls are a nice touch and the quality of the mastering is pretty good. There's some really nice highlights like Ellington's "Caravan" and Shaw's "Stardust". It's a great intro set to anyone who is just getting interested in Swing.
Best re-recordings of original 78's I have ever run across!.......1999-11-18
We hear many re-recordings of swing era music which are taken from film sound tracks or radio outtakes, which are similar to the original 78RPM recordings. These tracks, however, had to come from original material. Every note is the same as I grew up with in the 30s and 40s, even the sour notes, which you will hear if you really listen.
My hat's off to whomever recorded these tracks. All of the 78's hiss and scratch is gone, the screech of the brass is almost nonexistant and the bass has been brought up beautifully. You have to have listened to the original 78's to appreciate the job that has been done.
If you like swing era big band jazz, you will not find a better place to spend $25.
I recommend this box set to anyone who craves to be a hepcat.......1999-08-14
This is the most remarkable box set I have seen! It offers everything from the wailin' horn of Bunny Berigan, the sentimental serenade emitted from Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra and the popular hits like Sing, Sing, Sing. All of the numbers are original recordings, and you can even hear the subtle crackle of the old players. If you want to be a modern swing enthusiast, you should familiarize yourself with the grand daddies to appreciate the Cherry Poppin' Daddy. Personally, I don't think that you will find better music anywhere else from the originals. The music seems to speak for the times. Times of modern cities, and even leaving for war. The New King Of Californian Cool.......2003-10-29
After the shut down of his previous label Permanent Press Walter Clevenger forms his own label Brewery and ends four years of silence with "Full Tilt & Swing". Imagine a world where The Raspberries, Buck Owens' Buckaroos , The Clarence White era Byrds and Brinsley Schwarz jam nightly and you're getting warm to "Full Tilt & Swing". Dominated by Clevenger's Nick Lowe-esque vocals and often witty songwriting and a band that loves to twang and thunder this is a CD for those who thought The Eagles eventual slickness gave L.A music a bad name. Hey, what's not to like? Non-dopey lyrics about love, guitars that take no prisoners and a front man who has real imagination...we have lift off. Just buy!!

The venerable cowboy band Riders in the Sky are often lauded for their dazzling instrumental dexterity, as well as for the versatility of their repertoire. But no less surprising is how the Grammy winners have kept things fresh through the years, whether championing traditional (if also original) Western music, with its complex chord structures and vocal harmonies, or recasting themselves as children's entertainers. On A Pair of Kings, they showcase their talents in yet a different way, by building the entire album around the playing and singing of band members Woody Paul, fiddler extraordinaire, and the accordion-toting Joey the Cowpolka King. Neither Joey nor Woody can match Ranger Doug's resonant baritone, but they more than carry the day with a combination of respectable vocal performances, a winning blend of material (from a Celtic medley to cowboy fare to polkas and waltzes), and sterling choices of arrangements and musical phrasing. The small fry will appreciate the cornball humor ("You Stole My Wife You Horsethief"), while swing aficionados will find much to like in their deft handling of "How High the Moon" and a tongue-in-cheek rendering of "I'm an Old Cowhand." Who says you can't teach old dogies new tricks? --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
Only for music lovers........2003-10-05
I became a fan of the Riders twenty years ago when I was in engineering school, after hearing them on programs such as "A Prarie Home Companion" and "Austin City Limits." I thought that their style of exceptional musicianship for pure fun was something special. After picking up a couple of their albums which were more spoof than music, I sort of gave up on them.
A few weeks ago I picked up "A Pair of Kings" and fell in love with the Riders all over again. This is musicianship at its finest, the way I wish I could play it. It is jazz in cowboy boots and hats, at once simple and sophisticated, and most of all, pure fun.
The Riders have added an accordian, expertly manipulated by "Joey The Cowpolka King." Just when you thought it couldn't get any better.
Dr. Woody Paul, once dubbed "the King of the Cowboy Fiddlers" shows us why with his up-tempo, soulful rendition of "Celtic Medley," track no. 6. And on track no. 10 "The Bunkhouse Race" Woody and Joey remove all doubt that we are experiencing the finest possible.
Ranger Doug Green, once proclaimed "Idol of American Youth" demonstrates his title when he sings "Texas Sand." (track 5.) Outstanding.
"Too Slim" with his stand-up bass rounds out the quartet with his own undeniable musical expertise, adding the bottom nth degree to the ensemble.
The straw which broke my back is track no. 4, an old jazz standard, one popularized by Les Paul, "How High the Moon." "Somewhere there's music," it's on this album!
If you're too cool to like accordians or anything country, pass this album by. It's definitely not on your level. If you like fun music at its very finest, check out this album as soon as possible. How good can it get? How high the moon!
