JILL EICHENBERRY ASTOUNDS IN THIS VERY MUSICAL BROADWAY DISASTER . . . . .......2006-12-26
". . . appealing and gutsy . . . " (William Raidy, Newark Star-Ledger) ". . . An engaging musical . . . a musical with a message and a welcome surprise . . . " (Jeffrey Lyons, CBS Radio) ". . . the show casts a pall over the audience." (Frank Rich, New York Times) ". . . a lifeless score and humorless book . . . " (John Kendrick, [...]) "Considered by some to be one of the ten worst Broadway plays. " (Victoria Woodhull website)
After three weeks of previews, ONWARD VICTORIA opened (and closed) at the Martin Beck Theatre on December 14, 1980. Eight months later, members of the original cast gathered at RCA Studios in New York to record the show. I, for one, am extremely grateful that they did and am indebted to Original Cast Records for its remastered 1994 CD release. Usually in agreement with John Kendrick, I do not find the score "lifeless." Rather, I find it refreshing and inventive; an "old-fashioned" Broadway score in the very best sense of the term.
Economic reality has extracted a heavy toll from the Broadway musical, primarily in the number of singers and dancers employed and the size and quality of the orchestra. String sections have been replaced by synthesizers; a crack dance corps and a separate big-voiced chorus have given way to 16 or fewer singer/dancers who do neither as well as they did in the good old days; the overture has all but disappeared; excellence has been replaced by ordinary. Not the case with ONWARD VICTORIA.
Just give a listen to the excellent vocal writing and choral work in the opening number "In New York The Only Sin Is Being Timid" (listed as "The Age of Brass" on opening night), Victoria's campaign song "Onward Victoria" (or, "Victoria's Banner"), "You Cannot Drown the Dream," and the hymn-parody "A Valentine for Beecher;" and the stand-up-and-cheer second act finale. Incidentally, are those Bach-trumpets I hear in "Valentine?" Maybe the book was humorless, but catch the references to incest as per Sophocles in "Something for the Lord," artfully sung by Jim Jansen, and this line - and others - from "Beecher's Defense": "Plymouth Church should be proud to have a preacher so endowed." Not all the lyrics are as inspired as these ("Love and Joy" is a case in point), but even Oscar Hammerstein, II, penned a few clinkers. How about this gem from SOUND OF MUSIC: "You need someone older and wiser telling you what to do-ooh. I am 17 going on 18. I'll take care of you."
The cast is uniformly excellent, but Jill Eikenberry is a revelation! Known primarily as "Ann Kelsey" on TVs "LA Law" (153 episodes, 1986-1994), she reveals herself as a fine singer-actress in the role of Victoria Woodhull, a feminist who, decades before women won the right to vote, was the Equal Rights Party candidate for President, running against incumbent Ulysses S. Grant. In addition to her campaign-style numbers, Ms. Eikenberry gives us two lovely, character-building ballads, "I've Had a Taste of Forever" & "Another Life." Beth Austin, as Woodhull's sister Tennie Clafin, joins Victoria in "Magnetic Healing" & "I Depend on You" and gets her chance to shine in the big, brassy, show-stopping "Respectable." Lenny Wolpe (Feldzieg in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE), as restaurateur Charlie Delmonico, has a great time with "Unescorted Women;" Jim Jansen (Post Office prosecutor Anthony Comstock) gleefully reveals "Every Day I Do a Little Something for the Lord;" Michael Zaslow (Henry Ward Beecher, charismatic preacher of Brooklyn's Plymouth Church) explains away his wife's infidelity with "A Woman Like Beth" and joins Victoria in "Love and Joy," the only number that, in my opinion, doesn't succeed.
A "lifeless score?" I think not. Rather, a delightful score that transcends its appallingly bad book. (See also WHOOP-UP, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, et. al.) Without a complete rewrite of the book, it's doubtful that ONWARD VICTORIA will ever again find its way onto the stage, so let's be grateful that this fine recording, with members of the original Broadway cast, is here for us to enjoy.
Highly recommended.
Melodies for a change - Thank God!.......2002-12-13
I thoroughly enjoyed ONWARD VICTORIA'S lush score. I am unable, even after 2 weeks, to get Mr. Herrmann's melodies out of my head. It is unfortunate that the theatrical environment of today only encourages the big, garish, pop scores of the talent-less British wave of writers. I hope Mr. Herrmann keeps on doing what he is doing - Thank you Keith Herrmann!

Album Description
The album, being released on Zacksongs, contains 11 tracks of diverse original material with Garrin's words, voice, and guitar as its centerpiece. From the concise, electric Beatle-esque pop of "What You Wanted to Hear" and "Answers" to the aggressive, punky throttle of "Don't Panic", this CD balances song craft, melodic innovation, and a radio friendly aesthetic that has become Benfield's focus. Where Joy Kills Sorrow is a journey that also includes lush acoustic balladry, ambitious guitar excursions, and direct, thought provoking lyrics.
Where Joy Kills Sorrow is Benfield's most radio friendly and concise collection of songs. At the same time, this record is more acute in it's musical accomplishments. The result is a blend of complex arrangements and serious pop. Benfield performs all vocals, guitar, baritone guitar, mandolin and much of the bass guitar parts on the album. All 11 tracks are full-band recordings using Benfield's regular performing band.
Customer Reviews:
Garrin stretches out and it's a delight!.......2004-11-21
It's a joy to hear Garrin expand his musical horizons and grow as an artist. His first two ("Living A Dream" and "Nowhere Is Brighter") showcase his singer/songwriter strengths, and the lyrics reflect his passions. The little noticed (and hard to find) "August Live '03" give you a sense of his ability to rock and jam instrumentally. "Where Joy Kills Sorrow" takes Garrin beyond, with a host of musical expression. My favorite is "The Loop" for lyrics, and for its clever guitar work. "Be Love" echoes his Beatles influence. And the title track is dramatic and subtle. Is it really about a phone call to an old lover? Or is there something else going on? Garrin's a genius and deserves your attention.
Catchy tunes.......2004-11-03
I have to confess I was a little disappointed when I first played Garrin's new CD. But the best music grows on you, and this does too. I think Garrin puts the music together almost too carefully - I bet he's something of a perfectionist. If you compare his style with say, Josh Ritter, Garrin's music is more... `technical', perhaps even more subtle. Josh Ritter is looser, more earthy.
Garrin's last album was a showcase of different styles. This one (which is probably more cohesive, stylistically) alternates between jangly and dreamy pop, the latter richer and more successful, underpinned by attractive acoustic guitars and laid-back percussion. Garrin's voice is, as ever, clear and warm, and it's the title track that best demonstrates all these elements. The final track does too, and is for me the standout on the album.
'Where Joy Kills Sorrow' is a very listenable album and will no doubt grow on me further, just like Garrin's first album did. It lacks a little richness at times perhaps, lacks the lyrical brilliance of someone like Josh Ritter, but counters these things by burrowing quietly into your subconscious and planting melodies in your head that you won't at first be able to identify.

The Ultimate "Feel Good" CD of the Summer!.......2006-07-05
Michele Lane's sound is like a warm breeze washing over you, taking away all your cares and woes. If a beautiful smooth sound is what you crave at the end of the day, or while your entertaining, this CD is for you. Michele's warm, rich vocals are unique and inspiring. I loved each and every selection especially "Girlfirends", a tribute to "real women" everywhere.
Debut album from Michele a winner! A+ from start to end........2006-06-02
Wow, what a way to blast onto the scene! Play this album once and you'll play it over and over. A fresh new sound in the style of the classic jazz singers, Michele has the vocal quality and song selections -- great classics and a few originals of her own -- plus a terrific band that will make this album a big seller. Recording quality is superior, clearly a professional production.
Her original songs are truly the caliber of the classics, so expect to hear more new material from her over time. Her upbeat and humorous "Girlfriends" song cleverly says it all about women relationships -- what a gift for a girl's girlfriend! "Letting Go" speaks optimism about daring to make changes. Her rendition of "At Last" rivals the very best -- and at last Michele treats us to her great jazz sound!
I find this album to be so "listenable" from the first track to the last, it'll just own one slot of my 6 CD changer. And I'll reserve another slot for her next album - bring it on, Michele!

Album Description
Tim Carless is returning with a new album; both an arrival and a departure, his first as an instrumental composer. Previously an analogue purist, he has embraced the realm of laptop recording and audio processing, and dispensed with all prior self-imposed rules during the making of this album. The album is rich in both geographical and musical influences from the last two or three years; traditional guitar, bass and piano nestle with sounds sculpted from extreme and irreverent audio processing. The initial spark came from Tim being approached to compose for independent film, this coupled with his new-found pallet of the digital domain has produced some astounding work that weaves and turns through a collection of beautiful, poignant music, that displays both his strength as a composer and his craftsmanship as a producer.
