This is a very commercialized version of paraguayan songs. I'm from paraguay, and did not enjoy listening to this CD. I highly recommend Explorer Series: Paraguay - Guarani Songs and Dances
instead.

This magnificent compilation of the music from Paraguay is a great introduction to this unique harp style which is the "harp of Paraguay", not existing other of its kind in the whole world. With its melodious rithm you can feel the sence of the beatiful fresh and warm life of central south america with its ucomparable sun & forrest along with its exotic and contagious melody. It's been an unexpected and a real pleasant surprise to find this album here

Paraguayan Harp.......2001-05-23

Much of the best performance (and solo performance at that) of masters of the Paraguayan harp has not yet found its way into the CD format in the international marketplace. This recording by Aldo Malaquias and his group "Iguazu" offers one of the best introductions to what is arguably the most brilliant style of folk harp as played in today's world. Other widely known styles of folk harp are the Irish/Scottish, the Welsh, the Mexican and the synthesis of traditional styles with contemporary styles heard in the work of such masters of the folk harp as Kim Robertson.

This album features traditional Paraguayan tunes, a composition or two by Aldo Malaquias and a treatment of a well-known Mexican song "La Feria de las Flores"-typical Mariachi fare-done as a Paraguayan "huapango". This is definitely music to relax with and has a good instumental mix for a recording done by a group, although as mentioned above, aficionados of the Paraguayan harp may well wish for the solo virtuoso performances that show the brilliance of the Paraguayan harp at its best. All in all, this album is a must for lovers of Paraguayan music, the folk harp and "Latin" music.

This is the type of collection that presents an interesting dilemma for parents: The kids will love it and be entertained and occupied for hours. The only drawback is that you will have to hear it. Like most things that appeal to kids, there's something initially charming that soon loses its luster. Great sing-along classics are featured like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells." "Up on the House Top" unfortunately has audience participation built right into it with its "click click click" line. "O Tannenbaum" is rather touching, but the inclusion of "Winter Wonderland" just might leave some children asking all the wrong questions. --Steve Gdula

This album is as close as you can possibly come to the Christmas spirit. I first bought this album to play during the holidays at my store in Concord, MA. I never knew the reaction it would bring. I had customer after customer asking for the title of the album. Eventually, I just placed the cover near the register. And Whitney Keyes has one of the purest voices I have ever heard. Her rendition of "Winter Wonderland" is reason enough to purchase the CD.

Good enough.......2001-03-10

I think this is a good example of the coastal music of Venezuela with all the African influence that is commonly seen there. However, the few joropos (folk music from the plains) in this CD are not well performed. Overall, it is an OK CD.

Can't go wrong with that one!.......1998-08-03

Venezuelan music has different roots and rhythms. This one has a definite Venezuelan touch, with a more rapid rhythm than music from the plain, I should say a more costal beat than other Venezuelan traditional music. It is very dynamic but never hypnotic. Good singing, good humor and happy mood, different from the deeper nostalgic music from the plains (musica llanera). Although having no vested interest in that CD manufacturer, I would say that regardless of the price it is worth getting if you like South American music. Now when you start looking at the price, you realize the bargain this CD is.

Classic Irish.......2007-07-30

A long number of years ago I was shopping at Michaels near St.Patricks day. This CD was for sale by the counter super cheap...so i grabbed that too! This CD quickly found it's way into my favorites pile. I play Celtic Music and spend alot of time at Renaissance Festivals either performing or just listening. And this CD really holds up. Ironically the Maid of Amsterdam piece that others have commented on stuck in my head. So, when I lost this CD (this makes the 2nd time I've lost it) and went on an internet search the Maid allowed me to find this beloved CD again! While I will agree that the piece stands out a bit in the album I don't necessarily find it completely out of place. And I do like this version of it, very perky and memorable! This CD includes lots of time tested jigs and reels. Great to play along with if you're learning pennywhistle and need something to guide you!

Best Irish record you've never heard.......2000-03-13

I found this CD some years ago when I was searching for Irish tunes to add to my repertoire. Given the LaserLine label and low price, I didn't expect much, but even now, it's one of the best Irish records in my collection. Besides excellent musicianship, the Kings Galliard offer top-flight arrangements that are well crafted and executed, but never stiff or overdone. I agree with another reviewer that The Maid From Amsterdam is a misstep of sorts -- it's not bad, but it's an odd choice. My only real quarrel is the track titles, which list only the first tune of each set. Standout tracks include O'Carolan's Dream (followed by The Rakes of Kildare and The Ten Penny Bit) and the title track (followed by Cooley's Reel).

Best Irish Instrumental.......1999-05-04

In my relentless search for the best pure Irish instrumental music, I finally lit upon this remarkable CD. I'm sorry Chieftans and Bothy Band, neither of you have recorded an album of this caliber. Absolutely the best violin/flute interplays of any Celtic music I have ever heard. There is one bummer on the CD however, and that is the only vocal, a sea chanty called "The Maid from Amsterdam". Perhaps my aversion to this song on this album is personal. When I was a child, my Dad had an LP of sea chanties sung by renown baritone, Leonard Wilson, and Maid from Amsterdam was one of the songs. My advice to King's Galliard is let a master like Leonard Warren sing songs, and you guys stick to your instrumentals, as good or better than anybody in Irish music.

Living Language: German (CD).......2000-08-12

I purchased this CD hoping it would be something I could use in my High School German classes. Although the spoken German on the CD is lovely and articulate, I would recommend this only to people who have already had training in German and wish to brush up on pronunciation and fluency. This is a good CD, but I wouldn't use it for beginners.

A good start, but nothing beats a real class.......1998-05-13

Lots of companies are putting foreign language materials on the market these days. This is not a bad product among these, either. Its focus on spoken German and everyday German, the kind you need to pick up to get around and deal with people, transportation, bureaucracies, etc., is practical and intelligent. However, don't be mislead by this CD or any other product that claims to simplify language learning: Nothing can ever beat the tried and true flash-card method, nothing can replace spending time a class once a day for a year or two. Better yet, use this CD for a couple weeks before going to LIVE in German-speaking Europe for a couple months. But don't use it to replace any of that. The CD format is a great advance, incidentally, over cassettes, in terms of repeating dialogs and sentences, custom-programming what you hear, etc.

Album Description

Afrissippi's debut album, FULANI JOURNEY, tells the story of GUELEL KUMBA, a singer-songwriter from the delta of Senegal, West Africa. Kumba moved to Oxford, Mississippi, in 2001 where he jammed with ERIC DEATON, apprentice to the late R.L. Burnside. The two discovered the similarities between the hill country blues of North Mississippi and Kumba's traditional Senegalese melodies, and the nucleus of Afrissippi was born. On FULANI JOURNEY they enlist the region's finest including drummers Cedric Burnside & Kinney Kimbrough, wildman Jimbo Mathus, sax legend Herman Green, and the Taylor Grocery Band.

Recorded in two nights with no overdubs at Mathus's Delta Recording Service in Clarksdale, Mississippi, FULANI JOURNEY shows the head-on collision between Kumba's music and the full-throttle drive of its descendant, the hill country blues of North Mississippi. This enhanced cd also includes a special behind-the-scenes film shot & directed by Scotty Glahn, director of BEANLAND: RISING FROM THE RIVERBED as a bonus track. The film features a rap by Afrissippi's high priest poet, the legendary JOHN SINCLAIR, as the band channels the "future primitive" vibe of Mathus's studio.

Excellent Fulani-Blues fusion.......2006-11-03

Afrissippi is a band whose core members are Guelel Kumba, Justin Showah, Eric Deaton, and Kenny Kimbrough. The latter three are all musicians from North Mississippi and have excellent blues "pedigrees:" Kimbrough, for instance is the son of the late Junior Kimbrough, while Deaton is an apprentice of the late RL Burnside. Guelel Kumba comes from the Macina Toro region of Senegal, where he comes from a long line of musicians. Other North Mississippi musicians contribute their talents on certain tracks.

Kumba's music is the basis of the music on "Fulani Journey," and is very similar to the music of other great musicians from Macina Toro such as Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck: long, fluid and occasionally gritty vocal lines with sparse, bouncy guitar backing. With the steady drumming of Kenny Kimbrough and Cedric Burnside, the powerful guitar of Deaton, and the unstoppable trance-inducing blues bass of Showah, it seems like the music was always meant to be together. And yet Kumba is perfectly capable of shining on his own, as he does on the track "Bambangel."

The only problem I have with this CD is the title track, which features John Sinclair speaking about Fulani history while the band jams in the background. This has the potential to be interesting, if Sinclair didn't speak....so....slowly....about....the....Fulani....journey....across....the...African...continent.

But despite this one flaw, the album has wonderful music. I look forward to more releases (and perhaps collaboration with?) from Afrissippi.
