Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
Great overlooked CD.......2007-07-30
There isn't a bad cut on this. I bought the LP shortly after it's release and to this day it remains my favorite Donovan record. Great backing band, great songs and well worth the investment.
just as i had hoped it would be.......2007-07-28
this has always been one of my favorite donovan albums. i was thrilled it was available on cd and have enjoyed listening to it in my car over and over again. it is a classic!
May be Donovan's finest moment.......2005-04-27
As it all too often seems to happen, an artist produces his finest work at the same time his commercial appeal starts to slide.By the time this album was released in 1970, Donovan's string of hit singles was coming to an end. Riki Tiki Tavi was a minor hit on radio, and then...nothing.But, as I have said before, that doesn't mean the creative juices have dried up, or that artist is no longer relevant, only that the tastes of the mass market have shifted and are looking to something new. That's when an artist's fan base takes over and supports him
(or her). Concerts are well attended and albums continue to sell to some degree, but the artist in question no longer finds his face on magazine covers or mentioned in the same breath as the current entertainers. This album,"Open Road" was, and still is, a magnificent piece of work. Riki Tiki Tavi, Changes, Clara Clairvoyant, People Used To, New Years Resolvolution (no, that's not a misspelling) are wonderful, well crafted, intelligent songs
written and performed by an artist in his prime. It seems that Donovan went a little bit backward, toward his folkie style of music, but with a late sixties, early seventies twist. My opinion is that this is Donovan's finest album. If you know Donovan only as the guy who did "Mellow Yellow", then have a listen to the Open Road album. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
You'll find that life is so much more rewarding sometimes if you kill your own snakes, instead of depending on the church, the government, the schools to do it for you.
A True Nostalgic Gem Piece.......2005-01-07
After 34 years (!) OPEN ROAD is still my Donovan's favourite album and one of those to which I have returned all along those years, over and over again, and with the same pleasure (it has always been in my top 5 albuns of all time). And when Repertoire Records edited it on CD, in the beginning of the millenium, I felt myself one of the luckiest people on earth. Because this is a true nostalgic gem piece from the old days, full of happy memories...
Eureka! I've Found It.......2004-06-18
I bought the vinyl (twice) and had it pinched at parties (twice). I bought the tape (new technology then!) and well, you know what happens to tapes. When I went online, I scoured the internet for it. No luck. I even bought the sheet music just to prove to myself that I hadn't actually dreamed it.
I was just about to get a different vinyl album changed to CD for a considerable charge and I thought.....why not.......give it one more go on the internet. I looked for that album and Open Road and couldn't believe my eyes...
I can only echo what everyone else has said - you've not had the full experience of Donovan till you've heard this one. As much as I like his other, better known work, there was an extra magic here that infiltrates your mind and memory. Be warned! I hadn't heard the songs for 25 years but I could still sing them to myself so these are the type of songs you'll sing in the shower and hum in the supermarket.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29
I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

Rather than compiling a mix tape for the road, Pete and Maura Kennedy went one better. For the husband-and-wife duo's first covers album, they put their signature stamp on 14 of their favorite songs for the van. Since the Byrds have always provided a touchstone for the Kennedys' blend of hooks, harmonies, and guitar jangle, it's no surprise that their transcendent version of "Eight Miles High" highlights this collection, along with dips into the songbooks of Byrds alumni Gene Clark ("Gypsy Rider") and the Flying Burrito Brothers ("Sin City"). In addition to the folk-rock of the '60s, the Kennedys show a penchant for '70s troubadours such as John Stewart ("Jasmine") and Bob Neuwirth ("Eye on the Road"). Yet the album's wild-card eclecticism also includes a transformation of Stephen Stills's "Pretty Girl Why" into a Brazilian samba, while material that ranges from Nick Lowe's "Raging Eyes" to Jimmy Webb's "Galveston" to Mahalia Jackson's "I'm on My Way" shows that musical inspiration knows no categorical bounds. The album ends as it must, with a Nanci Griffith song ("Late Night Grande Hotel"), for it was in Griffith's band where vocalist Maura and guitar virtuoso Pete came together and decided to go out on their own. --Don McLeese
Album Description
On "Songs of the Open Road," their ninth and latest CD, The Kennedys forego their own buoyant songs of transcendent twang to present new versions of their favorite traveling music written by others, a cosmic jukebox of folk, rock, country, pop and secular gospel material with philosophical underpinnings.
The first seconds of the CD's opener, Victoria Williams' "This Moment," are like slipping into a cool, calm pool, as Maura sings of appreciating each instant in life. After attuning us to the eternal now, The Kennedys head for the skies in a soaring version of The Byrds' "Eight Miles High," with a psychedelic swarm of guitars, electric sitar, and kinetic rhythm section, multi-instrumentalist Pete providing shadow-close harmonies to Maura's sweet 'n' sassy lead vocals.
The California folk-rock-country sound is heard often here as The Kennedys honor many great West Coast-based writers. Three former Byrds are represented: on the cautionary "Sin City" (co-written by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman while in the Flying Burrito Brothers) and on Gene Clark's elegantly mournful "Gypsy Rider." The bossa nova lilt of Stephen Stills' "Pretty Girl Why" soothes the apocalyptic anguish of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," which precedes it. "Galveston," Jimmy Webb's 1969 hit for Glenn Campbell, is a more oblique anti-war commentary as an overseas soldier yearns for his distant home and lover. Americana pioneer John Stewart provides the wistful "Jasmine," an alluring siren's call to tour, while Bob Neuwirth's "Eye on the Road" spells out the dangers of answering that sweet summons.
The ache of the traveling musician is also heard on "Late Night Grande Hotel," written by The Kennedys' friend and former employer, Nanci Griffith. Pete and Maura honor another soulmate, the late Dave Carter, by covering his twinkling "Happytown (All Right with Me)" and the yearning "Gypsy Rose."
Rounding out the CD are a rousing version of Mahalia Jackson's gospel declaration, "I'm on My Way," and a rocking rendition of Nick Lowe's "Raging Eyes."
With its wide assortment of source material, delicate thematic threads, and sparkling vocals and arrangements, Songs of the Open Road can't fail to expand The Kennedys' reputation as imaginative, joyful musicians, conceptualists and "a positive force on all things human" ("Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange").
Customer Reviews:
Love it........2007-05-13
I heard the tail end of a PBS special of the Kennedys. I wasn't even watching the program and honestly had never heard their music before. The program was on in the other room while I was on the computer and I stopped what I was doing to listen to them. I came on to amazon to see what was offered by them and picked this cd. I have to say, I just LOVE it. There is one, maybe two songs that I don't care for but I have been listening to it constantly in the car since I got it. Track 5, 9, and 11 are my favorites. It is getting a bit irritating though because the songs are in my head even when I am sleeping. I wake up hearing them. LOL. I encourage anyone to buy this Cd.

Strong Album - Would Give it 10 Stars if I Could.......2005-03-31
Having been a fan of Take That, I was quite interested when Gary Barlow released his solo debut. When I bought this CD, I realized what a musical genius he truly is. This entire CD is wonderful. Gary's voice is like an angel. And the fact that he wrote or co-wrote many of the songs proves that he is not just a former boyband pretty face (although he is that as well). His cover of "So Help me Girl" far outshines the original country version and should have been a #1 hit here in America. The follow up single, "Superhero" was equally impressive and should have been a much bigger hit. Other stand-out tracks include "Hang on in There Baby" and the title track, "Open Road". Since the follow up to this album was never released here in the States, I have not heard it. It is a shame that American radio ignored Gary, because I think he is an amazing talent. I like his former bandmate Robbie Williams as well, but why does Robbie get all the press and Gary is overlooked? If you like beautifully crafted pop songs and have never listened to Gary Barlow, I suggest you buy this CD and give him a try. He is every bit as talented as anyone performing on "American Idol". Let's hope he puts out more CD's and finally catches on here in America.
as beautiful as a sigh.......2005-01-26
In 1996 upon the split up of Take That the world was watching the moves of the man by the name of Gary Barlow. I for one did not anticipate what the follow was going to entail. When I first heard this earth shattering album I wept for I knew that things could never be the same again. Each track on the album has the ability of conjering up different emotions, and by the end, the emotional wirlwind leaves me dizzy. The album's central theme of encountering genuin beauty in our world of technology, yet being unable to shake a certain feeling of unease, comes across perfectly. It's funny that the people who are angered by this album may be the people it was really geared towards. It attempts to send the message that you don't have to be compliant all the time: treasure your individuality, don't let anyone take it away from you. At least that's what I got from this album, which brings the point across beautifully with it's layered sounds and melodic, peircing, and haunting vocals. I'm genuinly moved by this album everytime I listen to it. For those that think I'm saying this just to be hip, and cannnot and do not want anyone to have opinions different than their own, I'm with Gary Barlow saying 'So lets just keep walking down that Open Road'. Not just that but as Garys pet for his entire life fragments of this album kept on propping up to influence a diverse range of artists from the Beatles all the way to Nirvana to Radiohead. One persistent rumour which keeps propping up is that 'Smells like Teen Spirit' was a throwaway. It pretty much sums all you need to know about this album which is the greatest ever in the history of history
So why does the album only get one star. Because I gave my heart to Gary and he broke it 12 months 11 days later.
Fine Adult Contemporary.......2004-01-31
He has more than capable vocals for the music be does. If you like A.C. or romantic and emotionally passionate music, this CD is for you. He has great vocals throughout the entire album. He is a great songwriter as well.
Is Gary Barlow the most TALENTED person ever?.......2003-09-08
Is he? Does he have an attractive face shape? I LIKE his face shape.
is this album actually any good? Do I merely give him 4 stars because I feel sorry for him? NO Its because I like his face shape.
Gary Barlow INTENDS to make a HUGE comeback sometime in the near future. I SIMPLY can't wait!.......for the VIDEO....

Another work of art from Johnny Reid.......2007-04-18
KICKING STONES is a great follow up to Johnny Reid's first album, BORN TO ROLL. It has quite a different sound to it, with fewer power ballads and more emphasis on instruments. I especially like the addition of the backup singer and the horns, which enhances the soul feel of the music and further detaches it from the country genre. Like BORN TO ROLL, every song on KICKING STONES is a unique and worthwhile experience. There are light-hearted celebrations of love ("Darlin'" and "Love Sweet Love"), inspirational numbers ("Out of the Blue" and "Feelin' Alright Today"), songs that are intensely personal and moving ("Thank You", "That Kind of Lonely" and "Kicking Stones") and more. Johnny Reid consistently and skillfully conveys beautiful sentiments through his music and his albums are a valuable addition to any music collection.

Product Description
The official CD of the 2005-2006 Art Of The Motorcycle exhibition, this CD covers classic American road songs and is sure to "get your motor runnin'. It's the kind of CD that goes into your CD player and the miles just disappear. Apart from blues and rock, it features a jazzy rendition of "King Of The Road," a folk song ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning") and even a country song (Wally Ford's hillarious "A Harley Someday").

the best !.......2006-07-16
As I'm mostly drawn to Celtic music with singing (Karen Matheson, etc.), I was surprised to find how fully satisfying this recording is - there is dancing and singing, and even flying in it!
The finest instrumental Celtic I've heard so far.
Incredible as always.......2000-11-16
While I am sad that 1/3 of Helicon (Chris Norman, a flutist) is not on this CD, I am ecstatic that Bullock and Kolodner, the other 2/3, are expanding their roots. I was first introduced to Laura Risk at Helicon's annual Winter Solstice Concert in Baltimore a few years ago, and there was something very unique about her. Her playing wasn't fancy, it was just pure and from the heart. I am glad to see that Risk, Bullock, and Kolodner decided to release this magnificent album of mostly Irish music. Having not listened to this album for a while (I had begun to listen fiddlers like Natalie MacMaster, Ray Ellis etc.), I was amazed to hear the same Irish fiddle tunes arranged for a trio. It gives the music a whole different spin that is truly unique to Greenfire. For example, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetland," "Dinky's," and "Jackson's" are very popular fiddle tunes normally heard in Celidh-like settings, but here take on a whole different meaning without losing their raw energy. Although this is a celtic string ensemble, it is nothing like a chamber orchestra where things tend to drag some. This is 3 professional musicians who specialize in international music, and keep the tunes as pure as possible. "Sean Ryan's," and "Chief O'Neill's Favourite" are also popular tunes that the seasoned celtic listener will recognize. All in all, this is a magnificent recording, and I encourage you to not only buy this CD, but Bullock's and Kolodner's solo efforts as well. You will not be disappointed.
three great musicians...one great disc.......2000-11-11
This is a first rate recording by an excellent collection of musicians. The tunes vary greatly: from the rollicking sound of the set of reels and rants on the first track to the hauntingly spare and introspective "The Rolling Wave." Robin Bullock, Ken Kolodner and Laura Risk are each excellent musicians in their own right. Together on this recording they are magically enchanting. Mrs. Risk is one of the greatest fiddle players I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Her disc with Jacqueline Schwab (Celtic Dialogue) is a favorite of mine. This disc is just as impressive and fun to listen to. The track titled "First Light in the Mountains/The Open Road" is by itself more than worth the price of this disc. By the way...I also want to recommend Ken Kolodner's wonderful album "Walking Stones"--it is great too. This disc gets a high recommendation from me. I hope that you'll get a copy if you have the chance. There's plenty of great music here.

While at first wary of an all-string recording, I was quickly put at ease. The skill of the players and the mix of the instruments (guitar, cittern, piano, dulcimer, fiddle, and viola) makes listening to this recording rewarding. Many of Greenfire's tunes, particularly "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" and "Over the Moor to Maggie" are on my "Fiddle Tunes to Learn" list. Get this!

Hammering a Pleasant Debut.......2005-12-24
Prime Cuts: East Bound and Down, Heart With a Four Wheel Drive, Girl on the Billboard
Needing a testosterone boost? Look no further than this debut CD from the Road Hammers. Women, four- wheel drives, trucking are the calling cards of these five Canadians served over soaring electric guitars and overdriving percussion. Fronted by Canadian's CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Jason McCoy, the Road Hammers' hardcore and beef-eating constituency has had already been causing ripples in the 49th Parallel. As already noted, "The Road Hammers" is a concept CD revolving around theme of traveling, sometimes literally and at other times figuratively to describe life and love. Sonically, the Road Hammers join with other acts such as Montgomery Gentry, Confederate Railroad, the Tractors among others in the fraternity of turgid country-rock with an occasional coating of blue-collared ethics and Southern down home living.
But as much as the Road Hammers may front a self-made man image, they have enlisted some of Nashville's finest writers to add credibility to this set. Worthy of mention is the import of Robert Ellis Orrall who penned "Overdrive" with Jason McCoy. This philosophically uplifting tune about persistence in life is underscored by some muscular sounding guitar lines over McCoy's bluesy baritone. Also quite ear grabbing is the creative "Heart with a Four Wheel Drive." Written by Billy Maddox and Paul Thorn and formerly covered by 4Runners, this pop-slanted swampy rocker tells the tale of a love stricken man unable to escape love's entanglements.
On the other hand the cheeky "Girl on the Billboard" is about the protagonist drooling over a billboard girl wearing nothing but a smile. This is no schmaltzy Nashville's sensitive love number. Rather, this is an honest confession coming from a red blooded male that today's country music has emasculated. On the more rustic side, "East Bound and Down" about speed-driving is lyrically on the fluffy side. But it is redeemed by some driving-banjo bringing to mind Ryan Shupe. On the smothering bluesy side is Lowel Gorge's "Willing."
But the main malfeasance of this CD is that there's nothing here that is exactly mind blowing. If these guys are to cut into the terrain of their Southern neighbors, they need a couple of hit songs, which are not to be found here. Also somehow constrained by the album's theme, the songs here are sometimes lyrically contrived and there are a few frivolous trinkets (such as the reprisal of "I'm a Road Hammer," an outtake and the extremely short "Absolutely Nothing"). Maybe a Nashville producer, a more focused major label and a more lavished budget, could be the antidote to these problems. Nevertheless, "The Road Hammers" has enough mileage for testosterone-loving fans to put the forward gear.
Love at First Sight (and hearing).......2005-09-20
Fresh! That's what they are! Fresh! I did the same as the person above me here, went right out and got one. Lotsa talent, plus respect for Old School Country. That's what I'm looking for...plus, they're easy on the eyes....
The Road Hammers are the real deal.......2005-05-30
I saw the video yesterday for "I'm A Road Hammer", and I immediately headed out to buy this album. I'm blown away at how great these tunes are. I'm no trucker, but these songs really get you going. "Keep On Truckin'" is sure to be released as a follow-up single...the same can be said for "The Hammer Goin' Down". McCoy sounds terrific on this album, especially on the cover of "Willin'", a slower song that has radio-play written all over it.
Rockin' country is what this album is all about. Right now it's the number 1 country song (I'm A Road Hammer), video (I'm A Road Hammer), and album in Canada...that says it all. Do yourself a favour and pick this one up...you won't be disappointed.
