An Interesting Recital Program with Some Odd Mannerisms Mixed with Marvelous Pianism.......2007-05-11
Like the previous reviewer (villegem), I heard Mlle de la Salle play this precise program in a live recital at Middlebury College just two weeks ago. But I've also listened carefully to this 2CD set (and watched the half-hour DVD about her) and I must say that I share some of villegem's concerns about de la Salle's tendency towards mannerism. In the first movement of the Mozart D Major Sonata, for instance, she does some strange pushing and pulling of the basic pulse usually when she approaches a change from loud to soft dynamic: at those times she suddenly puts on the brakes, inserts a brief caesura and then does a (to me) irritating agogic prolongation of the first soft chord. I have no idea why she does this -- and to be honest she does it a bit less obtrusively in the recording than she did the night I heard her recital -- and she also does some old-fashioned chord rolling, something I haven't heard many pianists do like this for possibly forty years. I wonder where she got this? Having said that, otherwise I quite like most of the set. The Mozart Rondo is quite lovely. She plays the 'Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman' variations without a speck of whimsy or wit and thus they come across as more serious than they need be.
Once we get to the Prokofiev, though, it's an entirely different matter. Here she mostly shines. Her Toccata (with which she ended her recital but which comes first on the second CD) is a barn-burner. This is a certifiable knucklebuster that can easily get out of control. Mlle de la Salle displays fantastic control and one has the sense that she is making music as well as playing lots of notes; this is one of the best performances of it that I know. One has the same feeling in the faster portions of the cocky Third Sonata which was, all told, the highlight of the set for me largely because de la Salle understands Prokofiev's ironic nose-thumbing. When we get to the Romeo and Juliet pieces she turns on some entirely appropriate romantic sensibility. My only complaint is that she isn't perhaps as swept away with ardor as the music might suggest. But she gets the hieratic style of 'The Montagues and Capulets' just right.
The DVD is actually the flip side (Side B, if you will) of CD 2, the Prokofiev disc. I'd never seen this arrangement before and it took me a while to figure it out. It contains a short documentary that consists of some short musical excerpts along with conversations with the pianist (who has just turned eighteen) and those who have been involved in her career -- e.g., her teacher (Pascal Nemirovsky) and her mother -- which are conducted, of course, in French. English (or German) subtitles are supplied. I didn't find it particularly revealing and doubt if I'd watch it again.

In concert a loud disappointment.......2007-05-04
Reading a review of her Canadian debut in Vancouver on April 29, 2007, one would imagine that a rousing standing ovation greeted Ms. de la Salle's performance, hardly the polite slow rising one she received. Ms. de la Salle credentials are impeccable, so impeccable that the CD pitch came before the recital not even at intermission: simply put, we had to like it or else... And the reviewer, not surprisingly, proceeded from the same line of thought.
Juxtaposing classical Mozart and neoclassical Prokofiev set the stage for an interesting programme indeed! I concede that the recital started well and the Sonata offered some nice moments although slightly contrived: it was the art of representation as opposed to the art of transformation i.e. the feelings portrayed were acted not lived. Granted, a teenager won't have Mr. Brendel's experience. Virtuosity is a blessing but could also become a curse: in her case this led to exaggerating every move, fast or slow, breaking the classical pulsation. This out of style Mozart culminated with the Rondo which became openly romantic Chopin like, quite surprising for a Paris Conservatory pupil. The final Mozart piece "Ah Vous dirais-je Maman..." variations kept on pressing the same obvious style where delicacy, grace and tenderness were absent. By now one was looking towards Prokofiev for relief as it was becoming increasingly evident Ms. de la Salle had nothing new to add to her heavy handed Mozart.
Ms. de la Salle sound is forced rarely graceful. Her shoulders are tense because she presses on keys a lot instead of controlling the hand weight with a free arm. Thus it was no surprise she muscled her way through Prokofiev. The Sonata became an intellectual exercise, virtuosic and abstract. But it is the Romeo and Juliet suite that exacerbated the misgivings of Ms. de la Salle forceful approach. Romeo and Juliet, a tender love story set in a backdrop of violence and family feud immortalized on the silver screen by Zeffirelli. Prokofiev's brilliant music reflects this classic tale and offers soaring moments of absolute beauty. Well, Ms. de la Salle rendition offered none of this. Her insistence to over blow musical traits led her to almost lose it during the syncopated "Montagues and Capulets" renowned theme. Moreover, slow movements were painfully lacking colors and dramatic tension as her sound faded quickly, failing to carry her thoughts. The audience mind wandered away, lost count of the movements, and as a result they applauded too early or too late... Finally, it was an understandably tired soloist who concluded with a rough Toccata.
At 14 Ms. de la Salle in her first recording revealed a promising talent. Her second CD did not confirm as Bach, like Mozart last night, was treated romantically. Her emphasis on the right hand melody at the detriment of counterpoint betrays a rather homophonic hearing. It is truly sad to see how a brutal rise to fame can damage the blooming of a precocious talent and one wishes her to meet a teacher truly interested in freeing her from this over hyped mono dimensional impasse. She would then become the voice the media claims she already is.

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

Nothing but Gene and George: the hard work and the happiness in music, conducting by the magician Vince.
Noone is better, noone could do better.
American masterpiece with european feelings.
Filled with musical gems.......2004-02-17
This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.
TOO LONG !!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-17
I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!
GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12
Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.
Ga Ga for Gershwin.......2000-12-13
Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films. As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.

Not So Grand??.......2007-06-26
While the quality of the music is adequate, I was disappointed that many of the selections from the actual production were missing from this CD. The compilation of R/H classics is well sung, but some of the songs are almost comical in their presentation, in my opinion - w/ a hurried rendition of "It Might as Well Be Spring", and a "too jazzy" version of "Kansas City", just to mention two. Some of the castings were interesting, as well: females singing traditionally cast male vocals. If you're just looking for nostalgia, this fits the bill, but you might be disappointed in the presentation.
Awesome CD.......2002-07-11
I am currently in this play and the cd goes exactly with the play. However, there is a few songs not on the cd in the play. The cast that did the CD did a magnificent job!!
I adore this.......2001-02-10
I purchased this album years ago at the recommendation of a friend. I've loved Rogers and Hammerstein since I was 6 and my grandmother brought me home The Sound of Music, so I was really excited to hear this. This recording is so enjoyable, and it still gives me the fuzzies every time I listen to it. The performers are amazing, and they perform the songs like no other people I have heard. Rogers and Hammerstein fans must have this, as must fans of Victoria Clark, Jason Graae, and Greg Edelman for some really priceless moments.
All of them are very unique and interesting!.......2000-11-26
This is a must for R&H musical fans. Wonderful wongs are turned out to be very "up-to-dated" and sung well by these cast members. If you want to hear the new style and new arrangement of R&H's song, I recommend it highly to you!
Amazing CD.......2000-11-20
I have adored Rodgers and Hammerstein music for the longest time. This was a very creative approach to their music and the singers sound as though they are having a blast with all of the music. This is a valuable asset for anyone who appreciates show tunes.

A must add for Bach and Liszt lovers.......2007-07-07
As a complete piece, this recital is very satisfying, and it has remained in my short-list rotation for the last several months. In this respect, it is much like the recent Liszt recording by Arcadi Volodos; the more I've listened to the music on these discs--music that, in the hands of lesser artists, can be inscrutable and tedious--the more I've been drawn into their respective visions.
I have dozens of discs with the same material performed by Richter, Perahia, et al, and yet I would still place de la Salle's effort among the best. Are there more electric, barnstorming versions of some of the individual pieces on this disc? Yes, but this fact is beside the point. In my view, there are very few discs of this material that are so engaging from start to finish. I also disagree with another previous reviewer who complained about the sound. I don't know what kind of stereo equipment he has, but this disc sounds terrific on my system. Can de la Salle, sound the depths like Volodos? Not quite, yet she certainly makes the most of her vision and abilities. Don't hesitate on this one, unless, of course, you dislike artists such as Argerich!
This angel is a true master!.......2006-01-04
It's difficult to believe that the pianist in this recording is just 16 years old. Is she real or it's just a dream? Her playing is both elegant and virtuosistic. Her interpretation is serious and essential. Her technique is prodigious! If you have not listened to her first cd recorded while she was fourteen and dedicated to Rachmaninov and Ravel...hurry up! There's also a DVD (La Roque d'Antheron - Les pianos de demain) but i think it's just Region 2; anyaway she's performs live some pieces present in this recording. Lise de la Salle's vision of the music is perfectly exposed in her own words "Concentration on the essential". She's an ethereal pianist.
A great pianist of the 21st centaury .......2005-10-25
I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer (villegem) assessment of Lise dela Salle performance and the quality of the recorded sound. I find the piano sound to be one of the best I have ever heard on a CD. To my ears, the Mephisto Waltz and as well as other pieces on the disc have a very solid base sound. Over all, the piano recoded sound is well balanced. As to the performance, I was especially moved by the Sonetto 104 Del Petrarca, which I felt had been delicately and beautifully played. I compared Ms. Salle Sonetto performance with seven other pianists from the Great Pianists of the 20th Centaury series (including among others Barenboim and Horowitz). In my view, it ranks very well among the giants. In the past, I have been only moderately interested in Bach's keyboard music. However, Ms. Salle performance gave me a new incentive to explore this music. My prediction is that this sixteen year old is destined to be one of the greatest pianists of the 21st centaury, if she is not already.
A young promising musician, a smart program but disappointing.......2005-08-23
First: the recorded sound of the piano lacks lower register. Everything is concentrated on the sparkling of the upper register but you could not imagine a concert grand is 9 foot long and weights 350kg!
Thus Liszt and particularly the Mephisto Waltz lack solid base. The diabolic, rapturous waltz becomes a lightweight exercice.
The climax building in St Francis is not climbing much of a mountain.
And of course there is Bach. Lise de La Salle is talented, musical but Bach "a la romantique" is really out of place.
Heavy pedalling, homophonic as opposed to the polyphony of Bach make hers sound like film music, lacks the architecture and pulsation of Baroque music. The counterpoint and symbolic motives of the Baroque writing melt into a one liner thrill, unsure of its own meaning.
That is a disappointment and clearly the young musician is not comfortable in this element.
With its hints of annoying Argerich like accelerandos, Lise de la Salle first opus had the benefit of youth and novelty. It was worth the discovery. The second opus should have been better.
Let's give some time to time and revisit this young virtuoso in a while!
A Young Pianist to Watch.......2005-05-18
There is no question that 16-year-old French pianist Lise de la Salle is a young musician with phenomenal technique and musicality. This is, I believe, her second release; the first featured music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel and received pretty unanimous praise. The program on this CD has been carefully thought out. It consists of Bach keyboard works or transcriptions--some might balk at their being played on the piano, as they do at the recordings of Glenn Gould, András Schiff, Murray Perahia and others--followed by some of the rather more familiar Liszt pieces. As Amazon has not yet listed the works I shall do so:
Bach: Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903; Organ Chorale Prelude 'Nun komm der Heiden Heiland,' BWV 659 (transcription by Ferruccio Busoni); Toccata in D Major, BWV 912; Chorale Prelude 'Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,' BWV 639 (transcr. Busoni); Organ Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, BWV 543 (transcr. Franz Liszt)
Liszt: 'Saint Francis of Paola Walking on the Water, S 175/2; Sonetto 104 del Petrarca, S 161; La lugubre gondola, No. 1, S 200; and the First Mephisto Waltz, S 514
There is absolutely nothing amiss in these performances except that, for the most part, they do not catch fire. Considering that there are magnificent performances of some of these pieces in the Bach, on the piano, by such masters as Schiff, Arrau and Edwin Fischer (Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue) and in the Liszt by Cziffra and Kempff (St. Francis of Paola); Bolet, Ashkenazy, Cziffra, Kapell, John Ogdon (Mephisto Waltz No. 1), Brendel (La lugubre gondola), Bolet, Horowitz, Kapell, Janis, Kempff (Sonetto 104) one has to ask what this release contributes. And the answer is that these are more than passable performances by a new pianist, a very young and talented pianist who, I believe, has the makings of a major musician and who bears keeping an eye (or ear) on.
In the Liszt she manages, unlike some, in the bombastic pieces (St Francis, say) to play cleanly and also bring out inner voices with clarity and insight. She also never bangs. It does sound to me that she occasionally over-pedals, especially in the Bach transcriptions, yet she coaxes unfailingly gorgeous tone from her piano. I suspect she has not found her niche yet -- that is, the kind of music that brings out her best -- but I would love to hear her in some Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, say.
A little background. She was born in Cherbourg, her talent was evidenced early and she had an early admission to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique-Paris. Her primary teachers have been Pascal Nemirovski, Pierre Réach, and Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux. She has won a number of competitions including, in 2004, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York.

First Dance.......2007-01-09
I ordered this CD because I heard it playing in a store and it seemed very relaxing. There's nothing better than at the end of the day to put on a soft cd and relax to it. So far, this Cd has helped my fiance and I do nothing but relax! I recommend this to anyone who just needs to chill out after a long, stressful day. Most songs sound just like the originals, some are a little off but all in all great cd. We will be getting married soon and there about 2 or 3 songs I definately want to play at our wedding. Coincidentally, our "first dance" song we had in mind is NOT on the cd, which is okay because we only like it sung by the real artist.
Last Dance by Anne Lise.......2006-11-10
After really loving her "Rendezvous" album, I sought out more of her work. Was disappointed in "Last Dance". She seems to have abandonned her soft expressive voice which made "Rendezvous" so great and now sings much too loudly and comes across as almost shrill.
Diamond in the rough!.......2006-06-10
Wonderful voice! Velvety, sultry great to listen to on a summer night with a bottle of wine. She does an excellent job on these songs. She mastered the blues, jazz folk music mixture.

Lise de la Salle is an angel........2005-12-08
Imagine an angel playing the piano...then you have the right idea of who this young pianist (she's fourteen here, now she's seventeen) really is. Masterful and ethereal playing! She's worthy to be considered one of the best living pianist virtuoso. The future of this instrument is in her hands!

Customer Reviews:
Cosmic Zen.......2003-10-25
"What are you playing?" she asked. "It's driving me insane" as we drove down Ocean Blvd in my 1969 convertible Mustang. "It's Margaret Lang Tan playing Somei Satoh" I replied as I hit the eject button on the CD player saving the music for myself later on...Do you want to hear something different? Profound? Cosmic? er...Zen? This is the CD for you but be careful who you play it with. Somei Satoh has several hard to find CD's all in a modern multi-cultural (East meets West) minimal Classical music with tape loops & sound effects. Highlights are: "The Heavenly Spheres Are Illuminated By Lights" sounds like the western theory of Universal Big Bang meets Zen Buddhism with prepared piano in tape loops birthing the human voice. "Birds In Warped Time II" again with prepared piano in tape loops setting free Jonathan Living Seagull expressed as a violin. If you like this CD, check out other Margaret Lang Tan or Somei Satoh CD's.
