Mario Lanza infuses his characteristic beautiful vocal intensity into this collection of carols and Christmas songs.
The result is an outstanding album which will bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eye.
The recordings are old, but the Lanza magic makes this album a must-buy

I have just spent the past six hours listening to snippets of every Christmas CD that I can find on Amazon, and this is the best by far. It's the purest rendition of the best Christmas hymns that are sung in church on Christmas Eve. No inane flourishes, no ignorant alterations, no arrogant amendments, just pure hymnal power. Don't agree? Type "christmas" in the Amazon music search box, listen to all the renditions of all the classic hymns such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and when you are done you cannot but agree that Mario Lanza is not surpassed.

Update: I am now listening to the full CD and it is better even than I had hoped for. The beauty of Lanza's voice brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I am a fan of BRIDE since 1992. I watched them live in BRAZIL in 1993. This CD is defintely their heaviest. It is no "Snakes in The Playground," but it is an awesome CD! I hope they stick around for another 20 years!

For those of you who've not enjoyed the albums released by these classic rockers during the latter half of the 90's well listen up. Bride is BACK and back harder than ever.

Bride goes back to their roots and early days with their hard driving drums, hard hitting bass groves, blistering guitar work from Troy and Dale's classic vocals.

This new album is a mix of 'Silence is Madness' and 'Snakes in the playground' and 'Jesus Experience' and some of 'This is It'

The title track kicks off into an aggressive pounding of the double bass line and machine gun style guitar work. Dale's vocal work really sets the tone for the whole album from this one song.

'End of Days' takes the album into a direction that mixes modern style a la Marilyn Manson's 'Beautiful People' Dale shifts from his traditional growling vocals in the verses to a semi-high falsetto for the chorus. Driving pounding drums and a tight bass rhythm dominate this song.

'Inside Ourselves' deals with the subject of how we only live to please ourselves (feeding our lust, etc) but points to a Way out of that deception. This is one of the 'themes' of the album name 'Skin for Skin'

'Fuel and Fire' is reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers song (you know the one where you see people bouncing up and down during that song in concert footage). Again, Bride goes back to the 'Silence is Madness' days and combines a hard hitting, pounding drum rhythm mixed with rhythm guitar that sets the pace for the entire song. Dale pulls the same low, almost mumbly vocal section towards the end of this track like he did with 'Everybody Knows My Name' (Kinetic Faith).

'Breathless' has that 'radio friendly' feel to it - long droning guitars for most of the verse with barely a change in notes, simple sounding drumming and straight forward vocals. However, when it gets to
the chorus, the tempo is kicked up some notches and the drums and guitars show their stuff. Think of some of Skillet or Kutless style radio friendly songs. Dale should make this either the 2nd or 3rd
radio release. I think this one will catch quite a few people by surprise and make people notice.

This album is just chock full of Bride goodness I can't cover all the songs in this review.

Lyric wise, they are very bold in some of the songs, others you have to dig just a little deeper. But that has always been one of the trademarks about Bride. At least they don't make you have to dig so deep that you loose your way around the lyrics.

My Favs: End of Days, Inside Ourselves, Breathless, The Government.

I`ve been a Bride fan since 1995, and, definitly this is the VERY BEST album, after Scarecrow Messiah of course. The double bass in drums gives an energic taste and the bass chops are just great. There is no comparison, this is all different like any other Bride album. My favorites are:

- Skin for Skin: This song comes straight to your head, saturating all your senses at maximum level. I think this is the heaviest Bride`s song since Kinetic Faith.

- End of Days: I love the bass sound here! The Falseto vocals in the chorus are just thriller...When i listen it it just reminds me of a big scary spider climbing in a black background...Just Haunting!!!

- Inside Ourselves: Classical Bride sound. The bridge with double bass is so killer...

- Fuel And Fire: Play this track at high volume, and you will feel like a trailer knocking you down.

- Rise Above: "Living not dead...giving i say" This part is so refreshing...

- The Government: You cannot listen this song without closing your eyes tight and banging your head like a frantic. Beautiful chorus where Dale performs his low scales abilities, but then you hear him tearing his throat like never before.

Last, if you want to scare your neighbors and get struggled with them, BUY IT!

What a pleasure to find two excellent Lanza LPs on one CD. The compilation album You Do Something To Me, first released in 1958, was arguably the best sampling of Lanza's versatility that RCA ever put together. Whether by accident or design, the album offered stunning examples of Lanza's prowess in different genres: popular ballads, operetta, opera, and Italian song. While one might quibble at the absence of Neapolitan songs, it should be noted that at the time of this album's release, Lanza had not yet recorded his finest collection of that genre - the album Mario! (now available on the CD Mario! Lanza At His Best).

The standout tracks from You Do Something To Me are the title song; the thrilling (and rarely heard) Some Day from a 1951 radio show; the song Beloved from the film version of The Student Prince; and a sublime rendition of Che Gelida Manina from La Boheme. There are also impressive renditions of the aria O Tu Che in Seno agli Angeli from The Force of Destiny; the lovely Sylvia; Song of India; and the exciting Lolita. Unlike many of RCA's other Lanza compilations, there is nothing downright bad on the album, though Lygia and the over-exuberant Flower Song should have been remade.

The other album featured here is Lanza's first (and best) album of Christmas songs and carols, originally released in 1956. (Note: the same renditions also feature on the BMG CDs Christmas With Mario Lanza and Christmas Hymns and Carols.) Recorded between 1950 and 1956, most of the numbers showcase the tenor in fine vocal fettle. Ignore the moments of sharpness on O Holy Night, The Lord's Prayer, and Joy to the World, and instead revel in the beauty and commitment that Lanza brings to his singing here.

All in all, a splendid introduction to a vocal phenomenon.

I am a big fan of opera and know Alagna's drawbacks as most do,but this is wonderful.The best christmas album i have ever heard.classical styling for o holy night and adeste fideles.a lighter sound for "for the love of a child" and white christmas.nice renditions of first noel and o tannebaum.Glorious Silent night in french english and german.A sensationally emotional Ave Maria not over burdened by forcing the voice.Gaurdian angels up there with Lanza's version.Best of all french classic Petit Papa Noel,stunning!!!

3 out of 5 stars Alagna is too good for this 'crossover' Christmas album.......2001-03-18

I was hoping that Roberto Alagna, who is not only one of the finest lyric tenors of our time, but also one of the most intelligent and adventurous, would record a traditionally 'classical' Christmas album. This would be perhaps something along the lines of his 'Sacred Songs' CD, including many rarities instead of the same old carols everybody knows. Instead, we get the 'crossover' style Christmas album that has become popular with far too many opera singers. Alagna admittedly does include SOME carols outside the standard repertory, but not enough to be that interesting. Actually, I'm giving this disc 3 ½ stars, not just 3, largely because Alagna's singing is (almost) enough to make up for its other deficiencies.

In making this Christmas album, Alagna wanted a mix of classical and pop styles, similar to the old 'Hollywood' albums like those made by his idols Mario Lanza and French tenor Tino Rossi. The disc is a mixture of languages and cultures as well as musical styles. Alagna was born in France to Sicilian parents, and these two languages and Italian are his native tongues. Thanks to his marriage to the extraordinary Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu, he is now fluent in that language as well. His English is always clear and understandable, if heavily accented. His German still needs some work, but is by no means bad. Most of the selections are given multilingual renditions. In 'Silent Night' for example, the first verse is sung in French, the second in German, and the third in English, there are bits of Italian in 'Jingle Bells' and most of the French or Latin carols are repeated in English (a pity about the awful translation for 'Ave Maria'). It's a pity he includes no carols in Sicilian.

My biggest problem with this album is the incredibly overdone and often too loud pop style arrangements (mostly by conductor Robin Smith), complete with not one but three children's choirs. The worst 'victim' of the arrangements is 'In dulce jubilo', turning a simple, angelic tune into a headbanger. Often while I was listening I wished that had been simply Alagna and his guitar, especially for his own composition 'Gentil Pere Noel', a simple, catchy, up-and-down-the-scale melody similar to 'Joy to the World' .The one song entirely free from this overdone style, and for this reason the best track on the CD, is the gorgeous, haunting Romanian carol, 'O ce veste minunata'. It is sung by Alagna softly and sweetly with complete simplicity and honesty, backed only by a very discreet choir which actually accompanies him instead of trying to overwhelming him.

The documentation doesn't help much either. There are some cheerful notes from both Alagna and producer Jeff Jarratt, as well as lots of pictures of the very handsome tenor. But it is unforgivable that there are no texts or translations, only very brief notes about the origins about the various carols and an occasional synopsis. Translations may not be necessary for the familiar carols which he sings at least partially in English, but no matter how good his diction is, they ARE necessary for those selections entirely in other languages. Certainly we should have been given the words to 'Gentil Pere Noel'. And how many people outside Romania know 'O ce veste minunata', which isn't even given a synopsis?

However, little of what is wrong with this disc is Alagna's fault. He obviously had a ball recording it - one can hear him grinning throughout virtually every track and his enthusiasm is infectious. He also has an almost childlike sincerity that is perfect for this repertory. A few picky moments aside, he's in very good voice, and he gets ample opportunity to show off some very impressive tenor high notes. Besides the aforementioned 'O ce veste minunata', there are a few other selections on the disc that are absolutely wonderful. First is a delightful medley of 'Jingle Bells', 'Deck The Halls' and 'Sleigh Ride', where Alagna, unlike the Three Tenors on THEIR Christmas album, actually knows what the word 'yoohoo' means. 'Guardian Angels' (written by Harpo Marx!) is to my ears a very JEWISH melody reminiscent of 'Kol Nidre', sung by Alagna with almost cantorial intensity. Indeed, he very nearly left me in tears! I also liked his heroic rendition of 'Adeste Fideles' .

Alagna was a cabaret singer in his teens, and thus can sing overtly pop material more idiomatically than most opera singers. I was a bit taken aback by his John Denver-esque beginning of 'The Love of A Child' (not inappropriate as it sounds much like Denver's 'Annie's Song'), but the song grew on me as his true voice began to ring out. 'Petit Papa Noel' could have used another take due to a couple of iffy high notes, but he sings it as if to a child he loves - indeed, he HAS often sung it to his daughter as a lullaby. The one major misstep Alagna makes is with 'White Christmas', where he is obviously trying to imitate Bing Crosby and not doing a very good job of it. Note to certain critics - THIS is what Alagna sounds like when he croons. It is NOT what he sounds like when he sings an operatic pianissimo. Thank heaven.

It took multiple hearings for me to like this disc as much as I did, and I suspect that many listeners, including opera lovers who otherwise admire Alagna, will not want to play it more than once.There is material with him coming out that I am FAR more interested in, notably a superb CD of French arias, a bel canto CD, and a complete Tosca with Gheorghiu. Still, Alagna (unlike a certain other gentleman) shows here what even pop material sounds like with a REAL voice, and hopefully he can get pop fans listening to it to graduate to real opera.

2 out of 5 stars An Alagna That We Have No Heard.......2000-12-04

Well let's start with Alagna's darkened voice. I think Roberto may be developing Carreras-Itis. This is cartainly a different sounding Roberto Alagna that I have ever heard. His middle is muddy and his top doesn't ring like in the past. I like the selection of songs including a song he wrote for this album. Not all the arrangements are tradtional (some even being on the ridiculous side) and maybe this makes his efforts a little tainted. In the liner notes Roberto comments on his approach to some of the songs. He admits he tries to sound like a pop singer (i.e. White Christmas-what a butcher job). On other songs he was a tenor. Even that doesn't add up to much. Tenor fans and Alagna fans will be very disappointed with his singing. I was. This album will let him iclude himself as one of the elading tenors in the post Domingo/Pavarotti/ and Carreras era. His Sacred Aria album is much better than this one.

    I remember this album from the few Christmas records my parents had when I was a very young child, which they would play only once or twice a year. Listening to this album at such a young age formed the visual impressions of the Christmas carols that to this day I still see whenever I hear them. Mario Lanza sang with such passion, I can actually remember trembling to his haunting rendition of Guardian Angels. I guess to a 3-year old it is actually a pretty frightening song. I am thrilled that this album is finally available in CD format and will become a permanent addition to my collection.

    I really like this album (and the cute picture of Mr.Lanza on the cover) of one of Lanza's best Christmas collection. He did a very good audition of "Guardian Angels","O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "The First Noel" and he did them with allot of passion although he should have practiced a little more for the rest(but not much). His songs will make you cry. My boyfriend can sing just like him (and maybe better) this is also his favorite album. I have heard some other Christmas albums that he has done and I think this is his best! I think that they should add more songs to this album to make it even more special. We will always remember him. I hope he is singing in Heaven.

    My parents had this CD in record form when I was young. I was so happy to hear it again! "The Lord's Prayer" is perfect. "Guardian Angels" is moving beyond words. All of the Christmas songs are incredible, particularly where there are climactic endings (such as "The First Noel"). This is an absolute treasure of a Christmas collection!

    This collection has been in my family for years. We pull it out ever year and listen to Mario Lanza's wonderful voice. Time can never change the feelings that come up when I listen to this collection. The Guardian Angels song is a must for anyone that truly loves the Christmas Story.

    i'd never hear this tenor before...! now i'm looking all over to hear more things he's done, or other cd recordings, refreshing to hear his talent. just like ramon vargas, he brings something that is not the same ole thing to what we've all heard a million times sung by the same ole tenors.. its time for new blood.... this guys are great!

    When I first heard Tito Beltran several thoughts ran through my mind...just when you thought you've heard it all...voices from the past Caruso, Lanza, Peerce...bringing us up to the present with Carerras, Domingo, Pavarotti and Bocelli...this gifted vocalist has proven he can stand up to the best and then some.

    Producer James Fitzpatrick has Beltran singing one of my all-time favorite Christmas Carols from the past "GUARDIAN ANGELS"(Harpo Marx/Gerda Bellenson), played this recording as a youth by Mario Lanza, almost wore it out, quickly became a "Christmas Classic" around my house during the Holiday Season.

    Completely captivating performances by this young tenor...featuring arrangements and orchestrations by Paul Bateman and world-renoun The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra... the Crouch End Festival Chorus and Crouch End Festival Children's Choir, under the guidance of David Temple(Choir Master) on selected tracks...with some stand outs ~ "WHEN A CHILD IS BORN"(Jay/Zacar)..."PIE JESU"(Lloyd Webber)...entire CD is a "Collectors Dream", can't say enough about this future star in the heavens ~ TITO BELTRAN!
