I usually don`t take the time to review something for a site like this, as many others usually do a good job........but I have to write about this masterpiece........

Nowhere else today can you find music being made with this much devotion & realness, I could go on with track by track analysis, but there is no need here.......if your`re borderline on buying this cd....do not hesitate.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2007-07-11

Thank you Chris and Rich for letting us in on these intimate recordings. This cd is truly a gift to the fans. I've been waiting a long time for this disc to be released and I can say that I am not disappointed. The scaled down nature of these songs makes them come across with such an emotional intensity. An artist's heart and soul laid bare for all to see. No frills, no gimmicks. Just smokin' Amoricana music at its finest. Just listen to their rendition of Driving Wheel and you'll know what I mean. I highly recommend this disc. Can't wait for the DVD in September!

Album Description

With his latest studio album Close As You Get, Gary Moore continues in a direction not too dissimilar from his 2006 studio release Old, New, Ballads, Blues. Mixing original tunes with some interesting Blues covers that Gary has rediscovered, Close As You Get showcases Moore's exceptional talent as a guitarist and is destined to be one of the finest blues and guitar albums released this year.

Gary Moore is acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced. In a career that dates back to the 1960s, there are few musical genres that he has not turned his adroit musical hand to, and has graced the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and Skid Row to name but three.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREAT MR. MOORE.......2007-07-01

one reviewer said the Gary never made it on RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. I would have been more shocked if he did make it as that rag is extremely overrated and not nearly as hip as they think they are. That rag isn't worth the paper it's printed on and the only way I'd like it is if I was 12 years old and clueless.
Anyone with 50% hearing in their ears can tell that Gary is one of the best to pick the six strings. What attracted me to Gary way back in the day was that his licks were full of fire and passion, he played like he meant it. I love his hard rock work and I very much enjoy his blues playing.
For some odd and unexplainable reason he never caught fire here in the states and that is a damn shame. In his prime he could wipe the floor with the pretty boy posers that some people seem to drool over. Get this disc along with some of his older work and bask in the light of one of the great guitarists ever.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Close.......2007-06-16

Some say Gary is overlooked and underrated. Perhaps they are right, for he didn't even make it into RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. But that's just fine with me. Over the last many years I have become jealous for Gary; go find your own guitar god. Just keep reading and believing your rags about great guitarists and you will miss the best.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the last one.......2007-06-15

While I think the blues venture is getting a little redundant for Gary, I was pleasantly surprised. There is enough difference here from his recent albums to make this a great release. Alot better than Old New Ballads Blues. However, hopefully he'll try something new next time.

5 out of 5 stars Rock & Blues Legend Delivers Again.......2007-06-08

It's a great CD. Each one since the Scars CD seems to get better and better. Gary continues to place more effort on his vocals and is nearly back to the Still Got The Blues and After Hours era when considering the smoothness, dynamics and overall tone of his voice.

The order of the songs is mid/up tempo followed by a ballad. This pattern repeats throughout the entire CD.

If The Devil Made Whisky - A mid tempo, growling tune with a slightly abrasive guitar riff. Nice slide guitar work (which is always a treat for me). It's a great lead off track.

Trouble At Home - Slow bluesy ballad with an organ backing up the melody. Very dark and moody solo.

Thirty Days - Up tempo number with an infectious groove. The solo fits the song perfectly (you'll "whoo" right along with Gary). Fun.

Hard Times - Mid tempo shuffle with harmonica coloring the song throughout. The guitar solo is played with alot of passion and energy. You can almost see Gary making the faces. Great song.

Have You Heard - Back to the ballad, and again with organ backing. The solo is more passionate in this one than Trouble At Home. Nice.

Eyesight To The Blind - A recognizable cover tune. Gary's take is fairly predictable, but engaging. The organ is present, but a bit more in the background as Gary's guitar volume donimates it. Very good solo helps make the song distinctly Gary's.

Evenin' - Another ballad. Starts out with just a percussion beat, then the rest of the band joins in. This one probably has Gary's most vunerable vocal and delicate solo. Dreamy.

Nowhere Fast - Slow tempo song that is essentially a ballad I suppose. Not as delicate as Evenin', but not as dark and moody as Trouble At Home. Here is where I'm beginning to think that this is not the "back to the rock blues" everyone had thought this CD would be. Ha!

Checkin' Up On My Baby - Harmonica driven mid tempo. The harmonica tone is devastating. Gary's extended guitar solo becomes an extention of the harmonica tone and comes on very smoothly. Harmonica comes back together with the guitar for the outro. This would be a great song to see live. Awesome.

I Had A Dream - Very slow tempo ballad with a soaring vocal for the chorus. My buddy always comments on songs like this one. He compares the depression and despair in Gary's voice during the verses to "wanting to slit his wrists". Passionate.

Sundown - A rare treat! This one is an acoustic resonator slide guitar number that is just Gary and his guitar. It is a unique and perfect way to close the CD.

The CD runs just over 51 minutes, which is nearly identical to the last CD, and 10 minutes longer than the "way too short" Power Of The Blues. If you've loved the best of Gary's previous blues work, I have no doubt that you'll love this one too.

The 56th album by the 73-year-old godfather of British blues is a tribute to one of his major influences, the late Texas-born guitarist Freddie King. It's also a nod to current Bluesbreakers picker Buddy Whittington, an underrated pyrotechnician who follows a long line of distinguished six-string Mayall sidemen that includes Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Coco Montoya, and Walter Trout. Whittington measures up, recreating the terse energy of King's biting, blunt phrasing on the legend's classic "Going Down" and the swinging "You Know That You Love Me." And he puts his own grinding, slashing brand on the riff 'n' rip guitar of "The Palace of the King," a biographical tune Don Nix, Leon Russell, and Duck Dunn wrote for King. Guest guitarist Robben Ford lends his own instrumental King homage, "Cannonball Shuffle," but it's Mayall's piano-led "King of the Kings" that's most touching. Singing in his arcing, high voice, slightly thinned by age, Mayall explains how King influenced him and his Bluesbreakers, showing Clapton, Green, and Taylor "all the licks to play," and concludes that he's "Got the blues for Mr. Freddie/Sorry that you had to go." --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

John Mayall, the "Godfather of British Blues", returns with the Bluesbreakers for his latest studio album "In The Palace Of The King". This new album is John's tribute to one of his blues heroes, the late, great Freddie King. King was a blues guitar pioneer from the mid-50's through to his tragically early death in the mid-70's and he influenced everyone from Peter Green to DaveEdmunds to Stevie Ray Vaughan and probably most of all Eric Clapton, who produced and played on King's final album. "In The Palace Of The King" features John Mayall's take on his personal selection of Freddie King favorites and is a fabulous combination of two true blues legends.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Stuck in a time warp..........2007-07-25

This CD is reminiscent of the John Mayall recordings from the 60's and 70's...in fact it sounds like the same recordings remixed. The best song on here is Big Legged Woman, and it is only OK with further listenings. The rest sounds like it is 40 years old, and not in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Freddie must be very proud........2007-07-17

The Texas Cannonball has been gone for 30 years. With John Mayall's latest release, the double fisted Blues frieght train that was Freddie King is back on track. Bravo John.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-02

Superb Musicianship, tight arrangements, so what's wrong?

If you're new to the work of the great Freddie King, consider
investing a few bucks in the real deal. Most of Freddie
King's best work is still in print, e.g., "Getting Ready" or "Texas
Cannonball". His soaring vocals and wicked guitar phrasing are
like comparing a fine whiskey to this...I don't know...lemonade?

I found the tracks with Mayall singing (most of them), immediately
annoying. His straining, thin and unconvincing vocals pretty much
derail most of the material, which is too bad considering this is
a lineup of musicians with talent to burn. The "jump the shark"
moment - Mayall doing the line about not being able to "get a chitlin'
pizza at any price I pay...". I've never been a big Mayall fan as his
elephant sized ego always seems to intrude into his material and often
push it into the realm of precious and pretentious.

This is a John Mayall CD that happens to cover Freddie King material.
If you're a Mayall fan you'll probably like it.

5 out of 5 stars In the Palace of the King.......2007-06-27

Another great album from the British Father of the Blues. Albert King is one of my favorite performers, and Mayall does him justice. I've yet to find a Mayall album I didn't like, although some weren't as strong as others, this is a very good listen.

5 out of 5 stars Nice tribute.......2007-06-27

Great songs done by an all time blues superstar in memory of a "king". I especially like the Buddy W. vocals on Big Legged Woman.

Well done ! John

Album Description

Asia, featuring members of Yes, ELP and King Crimson, was the first "supergroup" of the eighties. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1982, was a huge success racking up global sales in excess of 15 million copies. In 2006 the original four members reunited for the first time in over 20 years for a series of concerts in the US and the UK. The success of this tour led to a full-blown world tour running throughout 2007 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. This CD was recorded in Tokyo in March 2007 on the Japanese leg of the tour. The companion DVD will be released in Fall 2007 on Eaglevision.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Needs a remixing.......2007-08-04

I saw the reunited Asia in concert in Toronto on Canada Day weekend and this recording doesn't do the band justice. Carl Palmer's drumming at the Toronto show was astounding...he was the driving force behind the performance and his kit sounded incredible. But I find the drums are buried on this recording...I have to strain to hear some of his rolls because they're simply muffled. As well, John Wetton's vocals are too far "up front". The music needs to be a bit louder to achieve a better balance.

All that said, this is still a good performance and the "unplugged" versions of Don't Cry, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes and Ride Easy are fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars And yet..........2007-07-28

I bought this CD mainly for a nostalgia factor, since my memories of past live albums should have kept me away from it. But it was the original band...To my surprise this is the best sounding live CD from the band so far. Wetton is much better here than Lake was in '83, and nobody wants to remember Moscow. The band seems relaxed, even in their solos, and there is a level of showmanship (which is expected), that really outshines other recordings.
I generally dislike "unplugged" versions of anything, but I was surprised that "Don't Cry" and "the Smile has Left Your Eyes" sound extraordinary in their new incarnations.
The real gem of the CD (worth the price of admission) is "In the Court of the Crimson King", a 4 1/2 minute rendition that sounds solid, with a guitar arrangement from Howe that sounds like a respectful hommage to both his own 70's work in Yes, and the intricate virtuosity of Fripp (Yes, I'm a Crimson fan).
And now, the bad news... The voice and keyboards are a bit forward on the sound mix, and unfortunately some songs have the drums buried in an ancient tomb. I think Palmer's drum sound is a bit outdated, a pity because I love his playing on most ELP recordings (including the live ones). "Only time will tell" has the worst drum mix of the CD, hi-hats and cymbals are all over the place, when you hear them; and I refuse to think it's the drummer's fault (c'mon this guy played Prokofiev live!).
Other than that "Roundabout" should have been rehearsed a bit, it's too erratic even at the slower tempo which they chose (listen to recent Yes live in "The House of Yes" for a killer version).
The rest of the songs are fine, and I can actually confess that as a nostalgia item, it turned out be better than a lot of the stuff out there today!

4 out of 5 stars Surprising & Enjoyable...........2007-07-26

The vintage tracks from Yes, ELP, & King Crimson alone were nearly worth buying the record. I never thought the Buggles were anything to brag about since their only claim to fame was being the first video.. you know the rest. They played that tune just to appease Geoff Downes who really never had any success on his own. It was evident when he tried to hold Asia together after everyone split. Anyway.... wish they would have recorded a show in the states somewhere, probably wouldn't have drawn what they did in Japan though. Wish they would have put Starless & Bible Black on here. Like I said up top, they earned some serious cool points for Roundabout, In the Court, etc... & did Steve Howe a solid by letting him do his virtuoso thing. Should have went all out on Don't Cry... forget doing the acoustic version.

4 out of 5 stars around an 88%.......2007-07-25

Strong sounding CD with solid bottom end (kick drum and bass) ... What I really like about it is it's from one live show ... I don't like live CDs that are a hodge-podge of different shows ... I'm as big an ASIA fan as there is so I'll give my straight impressions:
Track: Time Again - Just a kick-a#* song, get's everybody going. Always loved the cynical lyrics
Wildest Dreams - One of ASIA's strongest, most epic-sounding songs ...
bass is strong as are drums, Steve Howe's guitar sound is weak on this one for some reason, Wetton's voice is sort of weak in places but he pretty much nails the high parts when they come along.
Roundabout - Way better than the orginal Yes version ... totally different vocals of course but heavier and ballsier courtesy of Wetton's rumbling bass and Carl Palmer's heavier drums. Those out there who say this doesn't compare to the Yes version are living in the past. Yes are a prog band / Asia are a ROCK band (a semi-heavy rock band when you hear other tracks like "Soul Survivor" ~ which Wetton absolutely nails the vocals in that one ...)
Without You - This one doesn't really work, live, and I'm not sure why. Now, on the tour, they're doing "Midnight Sun" I think, which is a kooler song anyway. On "Without You" the instrumental breaks are great, the end verse is nice with the chimes and acoustic guitar (of some sort, I don't know enough about guitars to know what it is ...) I don't know, live parts of this song sound choppy.
Cutting It Fine - Kool tune, Geoff does kool job of blending the original intrumental ending with new modern keyboard sounds.
Guitar Solo - Very good but I'm not a fan of that style of guitar playing
Fanfare For Common Man - Asia's version of this just kicks the crap out of everthing, ELP or otherwise ... Steve Howe really shines on this as does Geoff.
Smile Has Left Your Eyes - Still quite the emotional ballad, in a lower key these days but JW sings a couple real powerful notes at the end
Don't Cry - This acoustic version, turning it into a ballad is NOTHING SHORT OF BRILLIANT. If they record some new song that has this type of sound and can get it some airplay with a video it could bring Asia back in a huge way.
Court of Crimson King - Wetton does a good job on this one. The original is a super long sprawling piece of music that defines everything I hate about old-school progressive music. Geoff has his keyboard doing the Mellotron exactly. (Carl really does a kick-a#* job on this one).
Here Comes the Feeling - This is a live version that really works, with JW strongly belting the high notes. Interesting this version is a half-step below the original studio version, but a half-step ABOVE the key Greg Lake sang it in, back at the disastrous Asia in Asia show 12/1983. I own Enko Sai on CD (someone got it for me) and if you listen to both "Here Comes the Feeling"s you hear how Wetton is miles better now, in his late 50s, than Lake was in his 30s at the time of that MTV broadcast show.
(However, Greg Lake's voice was at one point quite good ... I have the live CD of his '81 solo tour) ..... side notes aside this is a good Wetton/Howe creation and it's kool how crisp they wrap up the ending of the song.
VKTRS - My favorite of the non-Asia songs, sounds more rock and it just plain ........ works. Still has that haunting melody at the end: "You
were___________________________ "
The Heat Goes On - Good rockin' song, drum solo shows why Carl is still pretty much the best in the business ... that guy is a monster ..... so-so
Wetton vocals, he doesn't consistently hold that high G in the chorus that's real important in the cut on the record (ALPHA). On the other hand, the live version is more raw, if you hear the studio version off ALPHA that's just an absolutely brilliantly recorded song (perhaps too brilliant?)
Sole Survivor and Only Time Will Tell - Both of these songs just rule!
Amazing how much emotion Wetton put into the verse melody of OTWT. These 2 songs are ASIA, I've always like them both better than "Heat of the Moment"
At least for "Heat of the Moment" this version closing the show has a heavier sound, with a crashing snare/tambourine hit of Carl Palmer and
Geoff using very kool 'voices' on his keyboards in the middle. The jam session at the end is interesting to hear.
Possibly the koolest thing on the whole CD is the acoustic guitar/piano version of "Ride Easy". Just has a kool vibe to it you might not expect from the band ASIA ..... now it would be kool if in future shows they maybe throw in the ALPHA-session b-side "Lying To Yourself", which is a great song.
This CD is just awesome ... These guys are bad-as-he*# musicians, that's
the short the long and the end of it. And the voice of JW (one of the
clearest voices in music) is leading this band ... which is as a band should be. {unless you're Velver Revolver}

5 out of 5 stars ASIA's Live Show Now on CD.......2007-07-17

WOW! If you remeber the early 80's power prog and pop hit makers you'll love this collection. All the Wetton era hits summed up on two CD's. One of the things that caught my ear when I saw ASIA live and on this cd was Carl Palmer's fantastic playing. As a matter of fact the whole band is spot on. If we can only get them to do a DRAMA era yes song.

This music speaks to my inner being, my father was a Marine with the ETC, and it was not an easy time. Music like this helped him think about how the best things in life are two doors down on the left, just a shade away from peace. I love this music, track 13 speaks to me so much that I am not sure if I have the time to listen as much as I want to! Such great music!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sousa Collection.......2004-12-15

These recordings seem to date from the 1960s and reflect a style of play that is impossible to find today. Some people might consider the sound to be too bright, the entrances too aggressive. But I think this is more authentic for Sousa than what one generally hears today. Sousa himself is known to have preferred "enthusiastic" entrances from his players, to have favored an "orchestral" sonority for his band and to have played his marches in strict tempo with no ritards or tempo changes. That is what you have on this disc, which features the Marine Band under Lt. Col. Albert Schoepper, who also conducts on Volume 3 of Altissimo's Sousa Original series.

Album Description

His resume reads like a rock fan's wildest dream: frontman and main songwriter for FREE (founded with the late guitarist Paul Kossoff), BAD COMPANY, THE FIRM, SOLO & QUEEN. Paul Rodgers has been electrifying audiences since he hit #1 with his worldwide hit "All Right Now" co-written with Free. After six years with FREE, Rodgers formed BAD COMPANY with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. As the main songwriters they wrote all of the platinum records and #1 hits. While moving forward as a solo artist he took a slight detour and formed THE FIRM with LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page. He then continued as a solo artist and received a Grammy Nomination for his "Muddy Water Blues" CD on which he wrote the title track. In 2005 he joined forces with QUEEN and toured worldwide at QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS performing songs from both of their catalogues. He is currently proceeding on two fronts with QUEEN and as a solo artist. In '07, he will play ten exclusive US dates this spring and one summer date in Holland. For a man who prefers to keep a low profile, his talent still shines brightly.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Rodgers is still "the voice" of rock!.......2007-05-13

A great showcase of Paul's career, from the Free days to Bad Company,
The Firm, and his solo career, It would have been great if he got in
a song from his band The Law, but this CD is so packed with hits, The
Law won't be missed. He sounds great, the band rocks, and there is not
one dud on this CD. If you've enjoyed Paul's music over the years, you
will enjoy this Live set of songs, and of course, play it loud!

5 out of 5 stars Paul Rodgers just gets better all the time.......2007-05-09

57 years old and he sounds *and* looks better than ever. I just saw him perform in Tacoma and he did an incredible two-hour, four-encore show that put the audience in the palm of his hand and never let us go. I loved this new CD before the concert and love it even more now. It's a great selection from all periods of his career so far. For the long-time fan it will be like revisiting some of the best moments of your past and finding out that it's still living and is even better than you remembered. For new listeners, it will be more powerful, positive, fresh, and alive than anything you've heard up till now, and it will make you a fan far into the future.

5 out of 5 stars PAUL RODGERS - Best Male Vocalist Ever.......2007-04-20

I can't get enough of Paul Rodgers. His voice is angelic and smooth. Smokey and demands your attention. Free, The Firm, The Law, Bad Company, Queen and Solo. He is simply the best. This is a great live album with a good mix of tunes from most of his era's.

The thing I especially like about this CD is the return of Mr. Howard Leese. Original guitarist with Heart. Which ironically, Ann Wilson is the Best Female Vocalist Ever.

Everything Paul Rodgers touches turns to gold. Now if we could get rock stations to play new music by old guys, we'd be set.

Buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars FREE Again!.......2007-04-19

Well, obviously the best thing about this release is that Paul is digging back into FREE days.

Ten of seventeen tracks are reprised FREE songs, thank you Mr.Rodgers.

I first saw FREE in 1970, and Paul's voice is better now; though there can be no substitute for Koss ... his alter-ego.

This CD will get no media play...

A sad testimony to the state of ho' music airwaves....

Am I banned now?

What a pleasant surprise. This set is an excellent companion piece to the hot live half of 1997's "Paul Rodgers: Now & Live." The set list is similar, but it's Paul's heaviest concert nod yet to his years in Free ("I'll Be Creepin', "The Stealer," "Ride On A Pony," "Be My Friend," "Fire And Water," "Wishing Well," "All Right Now," "I'm A Mover," "The Hunter"). There are also 4 Bad Company tracks ("Bad Company," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Can't Get Enough," "Seagull") and one from the short-lived Rodgers-Page band The Firm, "Radioactive." Rodgers leads a band well-versed in his legacy through a total of 17 tracks, one of them new ("Warboys [A Prayer For Peace]"). Great selection of songs, Paul's in fine voice, the band is hot, what more could you possibly ask for other than "next day delivery from Amazon?"

When two-fifths of Cake defected to form Deathray after the release of their sophomore album, Fashion Nugget, some wondered if Sacramento's answer to Camper Van Beethoven would disappear into the land of one-hit wonders--especially since Cake's lone hit, "The Distance," had been penned by departing guitarist Greg Brown. But true to bandleader John McCrea's deadpan cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Cake turned around and repeated their success with 1998's Prolonging the Magic and its infectious hit, "Never There." Now comes Comfort Eagle, and, with it, news of drummer Todd Roper's departure (which probably explains the addition of drum programming to McCrea's ever-expanding credits). Like Beck, McCrea's self-sufficiency is only matched by an overriding ironic sensibility. It serves him well on the title track where, above mock Middle Eastern drones, he takes on all poseurs ("Now his hat is on backwards, he can show you his tattoos / He's in the music business, he is calling you 'dude'"). By comparison, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," a song that dates back to McCrae's coffeehouse years, sounds formulaic (which probably explains its selection as the album's first single). No matter, tracks like "Long Line of Cars" and "Meanwhile, Rick James..." are sufficiently intriguing to make up for it. Factor in the distinctive trumpet embellishments of Vincent DiFiore, the band's other original member, and Comfort Eagle seems guaranteed to ensure that, no matter what happens, Cake will survive. --Bill Forman

Opera Singer should be required listening for anyone who writes songs just to see how five different rhythms can form a bed for a vocal of a completely different rhythm.

Short Skirt - Great story
Comfort Eagle - Just grabs you in every way
Long Line of Cars - Wow!
World of Two - Holy crap! It is wonderful in every way.

In 'Short Skirt, Long Jacket', Kitty is changing her name to Karen as her MG changes to a white Chrysler LeBaron.
They meet at the bank, when she borrows his pen.
She has "....fingernails that shine like justice...",
..... but no pen!

The dude is in a band....
Would he be awake yet?
Would he have a pen?
Would she even speak to him?

I wore the outfit.
I had a pen.....Always...
I loved my

If this actually happened "Karen" didn't need a pen, she needed a line.
She should have asked what sign he was.

My sign is "Don't feed the animals".

5 out of 5 stars This 'Cake' Takes the . . .Well, You Know.......2007-01-25

I discovered Cake quite by accident and probably several years after everyone else who really loves the band. But, I adore this album and really can listen to it again and again and be amused anew each time I hear it. If an album can make me smile and dance at my desk at work, it is a keeper and this is certainly one of my favorites. While I really appreciate good music, what really catches my attention is clever lyrics and this album is full of those. Great, fun songs.

5 out of 5 stars Comfortably Familiar.......2007-01-20

Cake, in spite of its shuffling line-up of members, has managed to achieve something rare for music of its kind: familiarity without stagnation. Many bands, if they fail to evolve their sound, suffocate themselves with repetition. Cake, on the other hand, has proven itself -- with each successive album -- if not as fresh as ever, then at least as fun. They embrace their relative redundancy; just compare the album covers and titles if you don't believe me.

The point is, these guys (least of all frontman McCrea) aren't trying to achieve anything acrobatic. They've found their niche, and not only are they working it well, they are still, in many ways, finding creative new corners to it. This is actually quite impressive, especially in light of their Joe-Blow jive. The trumpets, the choir of voices, McCrea's talk-singing, and even the lyrical storylines (commentaries on everything from class struggles -- the delightfully droll "Commissioning a Symphony in C" -- to women and cars -- the unrepentantly peppy "Love You Madly") have become staples for both the players and their fans.

This album executes these standards deftly. McCrea and company give us the audacious ("Meanwhile, Rick James ..."), the playfully plodding ("Long Line Of Cars"), and the almost indefinable. A perfect example for this last style is the title track, with its Middle Eastern twang etched over a gleefully grungy bassline. The song is played loose and fast, but is in no danger of falling apart, and it's buoyed up by some pretty funny lyrics that make a mockery of fakes and posers.

That may be this album's biggest message, to those who might accuse them of failing to grow to accomodate a world of rapidly shifting tastes. Sometimes evolution and advancement does involve change, but then again, sometimes it's even better to avoid pretending to be something you're not. In Comfort Eagle, we are given the same Cake as always, true. But, just as reliably, that's definitely a good thing.

This is the album that, in one eagle-sized swoop, propelled Steve Miller from a well-regarded but hardly widely known psychedelic San Francisco-based bluesman to a chart-topping, hit-single-generating pop star. Capitol Records, who helped sire that transition by keeping him on the label through years of lackluster sales, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the event with this classy expanded edition. Those with surround sound systems will enjoy a stunning 5.1 mix highlighting the space-rock tendencies that so effectively offset Fly Like an Eagle's crunchier singles. Also included in the CD/DVD set is a worthy and informative half-hour interview/documentary with Miller about the making of the project and his blues background, as well as a riveting two-hour live show from October 2005 that includes most (but not all) of the songs on the album. The concert allows Miller to explore his blues, jazz, and even world music tendencies with fiddler/harpist Carlos Reyes adding gypsy/Cajun overtones to "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Abracadabra." George Thorogood brings his gruff presence to "Your Cast Ain't Nothing but Trash," and a relatively restrained but intense Joe Satriani joins on the last third, which includes a 20-minute version of the title track. Despite its dated synths and somewhat antiquated production, the album holds up remarkably well, primarily due to its excursions into Delta blues ("Sweet Maree"), folk-pop ("Wild Mountain Honey"), and soul (a lovely cover of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me"). Three nascent versions of songs such as "Take the Money and Run" (retrofitted to the chord changes of "The Joker") appear as bonus cuts. They show how the perfectionist Miller's tinkering helped craft them into radio-friendly hits that sound as catchy today as they did in 1976. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

30th Anniversary Special Limited Edition CD/DVD of The Steve Miller Band's landmark album. The CD is digitally remastered and includes 3 bonus tracks. The DVD features a terrific concert performance at San Francisco's Shoreline Amphitheater in 2005 with over two hours of music in 5.1 Surround Sound. Guest musicians include George Thorogood and Joe Satriani. The DVD also features a lengthy interview with Steve Miller, archive footage, never-before-seen photographs, and early demo recordings revealing the genesis of rock classics like Take the Money And Run, Rock 'n Me, and Fly Like an Eagle. In one special segment Steve Miller plugs in his Stratocaster to demonstrate how licks learned directly from the likes of T-Bone Walker, Les Paul and Chuck Berry influenced his own music and became some of modern rock's most recognizable riffs.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Re-realease!.......2007-05-16

Steve Miller is timeless!!! I remember owning the 8 track (I am dating myself), the LP, the first CD - and now the re-release. Go back in time when rock was king (and not over sampled electronica). Get this CD, gather your buddies, get in the car and take off on a road trip jamming down the road (just remember you have to wear your seat belt).

5 out of 5 stars I'm flying like an eagle.......2007-03-16

Wonderful, beautiful! This 30th Anniversary Edition of The Steve Miller Band is absolutely the BEST I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Miller 5.1 DVD Audio.......2007-01-04

Excellent 5.1 mixes of this album. Once the 5.1 versions of the hit tracks like Rock n me and Fly like an Eagle and Take the Money and Run are heard at this quality level, all the other cd versions are relatively dull. Great pop album made greater by this terrific version release.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely done, all things considered.......2006-12-21

There's no way you could be a white 20 year old in 1976 (which I was) and not be somehow impacted by this album. It was like aural wall paper. In those days, there were those LPs that were just everywhere. This certainly was one of them. In fact, it took me quite some time to actually purchase the album because almost all the songs were being played on the radio (this was back in the days of AOR), and it seemed that ALL my friends had it. It was actually TOO familiar. After a couple of years, I finally added it to my personal collection.

It certainly is an artifact of its time, but there is also a timelessness about the album. It's so well constructed, even synth parts that SHOULD sound dated hold up well. The simplicity of the songs and beauty of the arrangements add to the classic appeal. Also, there are no real duffers. Every song impresses in some way, and the album actually covers a lot of stylistic ground, and covers it well. At the time, I considered it perhaps too overtly "commercial" but hey, what did I know? I know I'll never purchase the 30th anniversary edition of Foreigner 4, no offense intended.

It's very nice to have the 3 bonus tracks on the CD, and the DVD has a 5.1 mix of the original 12 track album as well as a nice 30 minute documentary. As if that's not enough, it also includes a 2 hour concert filmed in 2005. The band is very good, and the renditions are spot on.
Some of the performances seem a bit flat, but it's probably hard to really get up for the 2000th performance of Rock'n'Me. The bright spots are indeed that: guest spots for Carlos Reyes, who really shines, Buffalo Norton (OK, Norton is a full-fledged band member, but he really shines on his harp solos),etc. Speaking of harp, the other kind, Reyes really opened my ears and eyes as to what can be done with the classical harp in a rock context. The other guest spots (Thorogood, Satriani) don't impress as much, but still give a boost to the proceedings. Anyway, it's nice to have a live Steve Miller concert in my library. I must add, however, that it is NOT in 5.1 surround, although your player may say that it is. My hunch is that it was recorded direct to 2-track digital, because it's absolutely stereo, even all the crowd noise is in the front speakers (and there's too much of it, IMO). Also, the 5.1 mix of the album is only in Dolby, not DTS, and is not spectacular.

That about covers it. I'm not dwelling on the negative, just mentioning it. I'm very happy to have a very good remaster of the orginal LP and happy to have the bonus tracks. The 5.1 mix may not be as great as it could be, but it's nice to have all the same, and it's really great to have ANY concert footage of Stevie, much less 2 hours of it.

Buy it and love it for what it is and what it has.

Album Description

Recorded live at the famous Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in August 2005, this is The Black Crowes caught at their very best. After taking a break to pursue solo ventures in 2002, their 2005 tour became one of the hottest tickets of the US summer. With a set featuring all their greatest hits, and some stunning acoustic versions, in the middle of a two-and-a-half hour show performed by one of the greatest live bands of all time, this is a concert simply not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chris Robinson's Opus!.......2007-03-20

When the Black Crows first hit, Rolling Stone did a very nice review on the band. One of the things Chris Robinson talked about was the live concert done by Humble Pie in the early 70s called "Rocking the Fillmore" where all the crowd noise and talking between Steve Marriot and the crowd was left in the recording. If you haven't gotten this, don't wait any longer. It's one of the best rocking live albums ever done and Chris talked about how much he loved that album and that he wanted to do a live one like it. Well, this is the one. This cd is one of the rockingest most powerfull live albums I've heard in a long time. This is the one he always wanted to make and you need to do yourself a favor and get it because they nailed it .

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Black Crowes Live Album.......2007-03-10

I would love to break it all down and rate each song on this album individually, but there is absolutely no need because every song is awesome. If you are a Black Crowes fan you will not be disappointed. If you are not a Black Crowes fan this album could make you one.

Their sound may be heavily influenced by 70's music, but it is timeless and will survive the ages. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Live Album.......2006-12-30

After picking up their first "live" album a few years back I was very hesitant to purchase this one.

To say the last one was "lacking" would be generous. It was a weak, lazy performance that was recorded and released in poor bootleg quality.

This release redeems any and all faith you've ever had in The Crowes. It's a tight sounding, bluesy, energetic, rocking good show!

The Sound Quality is stellar! If you are a fan of The Black Crowes you need to own this one.

5 out of 5 stars Freaking Good Rock'N'Roll.......2006-11-25

Both DVD and CDs are incredible... Seems after playing with J Page, The Black Crowes found their path back to the freaking good rock'n'roll. There is not a track I dislike in the album, and the DVD quality is amazing. I wish I could have seen them alive, but who knows... another time. You will find everything in the show: R&B, Blues, Rock, Accoustic, duet guitar solos and more...

5 out of 5 stars Just a Great, Great Live Rock n' Roll Album!.......2006-11-03

Freak n' Roll is a 2CD set recorded by the Crowes at the Fillmore in S.F. And just as the Crowes are a great rock band, this is a killer rock disc. While it does contain some of the lesser songs in their catalog (like Only Halfway to Everywhere and Welcome to the Goodtimes), these sound much better in the live setting. Standout cuts include the long jammy versions of Soul Singing, Hard to Handle, the aforementioned Only Halfway to Everywhere, Remedy...hell, the whole disc is a treat. It closes with a great cover of the Night they Drove Ol' Dixie Down.

The band has never sounded better, especially with the return of guitarist Marc Ford...his interplay with Rich Robinson is fantastic...check out the great acoustic duet Sunday Night Buttermilk Waltz. And the band is augmented by a 4 piece horn section and 2 backing singers.

If this is a taste of the Crowes to come (they are working on new material right now) then we are all in for a huge treat!

Also, the collection of the noise is not all that impressive, I have seen much better calming peaceful MUSIC. Do not waste money, I think it is rediculous to have a band for military, How about a band for PEACE?

5 out of 5 stars Great Military Music.......2007-01-11

The CD was just what I needed for a special memorial tribute to our service people that have passed on. The recording was clear and bright. The music selections were well performed and TAPS was especially evoking.
