Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

    5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso + Melody + Eclecticism = Excellent!!.......2007-02-26

Tony Levin is one of rock's greatest living bass players. On this record, he collaborates with musicians from around the world, showcasing his ability to blend with other musical styles while still making musical statements of his own. He also plays a lot of Stick, the electronic guitar/bass hybrid he made famous.

Many of the musicians Levin plays with are people he got to know through his work with Peter Gabriel. So there is a real "world music" vibe to this instrumental record. It's one of those rare albums that is intellectually and artistically challenging, yet does not punish the listener. It is warm, cerebral, and pleasurable. It will appeal to listeners of all genres, and really open their minds and ears.

    5 out of 5 stars unbelievable.......2003-05-08

this is one of, if not the finest album Ive ever heard. has great spacial qualities, amazing techniques, and master artistry. One of the first albums Ive found to really make "world" music approachable, since most instruments used arent of the western culture, it adds a certain purity to it. A MUST BUY.

5 out of 5 stars Every bassist should own this album!.......2001-11-17

I've been a huge fan of Tony Levin since I started listening to King Crimson and Peter Gabriel. I feel that he is one of the most talented bassist currently on the planet. His performances on this CD are only further credit to his genius. I got TL's Waters of Eden before I got this one. I liked Waters of Eden a great deal, but I was totally unprepared for the sheer brilliance of this release. Waters of Eden has more of a smooth pollished feel, which almost comes off as sounding like elevator music sometime. This album is comprised almost completely of duets that Tony did in the mid ninetys. Guests on the album include Bill Bruford, who plays some excellent percussion (especially on the song "Jewels"), Brian Yamakoshi, who provides some airy koto to a couple songs, and Levon Minassian, whose Doudouk (an Armenian double-reed instrument) is soaring and beautiful, and combined with Levins bowed bass, makes for one of the strongest tracks on the album, "Mingled Roots". Some other album highlights include "Heat" which sounds paranoid and tense and is a nice change of pace from the rather relaxed vibe on the rest of the album. Also, "I Cry to the Dolphined Sea" is a moving song with Bendik on Saxophone and Jerry Marotta on drums. Tony is playing this melody on a distorted stick that brings me to tears. Overall, if you like ethernally beautiful and experimentally creative music, this is the album for you, 'nuff said!

    Album Description

In the past decade, few songwriters have proven as prolific, and at such a phenomenally high consistency of quality, as Dan Bern. Here we have the opportunity to glimpse into his method and madness, as every witticism and whim unfolds, as both the sour and sublime moods hit, and as he ultimately undergoes the process of birthing and molding all those amazing songs. That, at its core, is what World Cup provides.

World Cup is a travelogue, "A Sort of Travel Diary" that follows our intrepid guide, armed with a well-traveled acoustic guitar, a notebook, and strumming partner Slim Nickel, on a short two-man European trek—through London and Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France, and The Netherlands—in support of the previous year's "New American Language" CD. The book is ostensibly about international soccer, World Cup fever having overtaken the continent at the time, as well as the delights and frustrations of touring. But more fascinatingly, it is a journey through the mind and imagination of one of rock & roll's preeminent creative artists.

Through bits of lyrics, offhanded jottings, flash aphorisms, off-the-cuff sketches, and snatches of conversations, intoxicating portraits of the artist and the summer gradually take shape. In the cracks between, we are treated to some indelible flights of fantasy: carefully wrought set pieces during which Pablo Picasso's father becomes a pigeon-sketching artist, or Dan imagines himself as a spirited old Catalan bricklayer, or Mozart stars in a stand-alone time travel story, with a walk-on role for the ghost of Hitler.

Best of all, Dan treats us to five pristine new songs—intimate, acoustic, troubadour tunes, simply recorded and decidedly somber, but in the romantic, mooning, starry-eyed mold of mythic old Europe.

Dan Bern is a genius. I collect everything that he does. I have a number of autographed books and CDs and when I saw this item in the Amazon catalog I just had to have it. A book AND a CD! It's not one of his most monumental efforts but it's still the man from Mount Vernon, Iowa. A visionary man. If you ever get to see him ask him to do his song called SWOOSH. It's not on any album and after you hear it, you'll know why.

An eight-CD collection of John Cage reading his epigrammatic notes should not be mistaken as subsidiary, or merely complementary, to the composer's better-known work. This is, like so much of his output, a composition in the form of a series of instructions. He read evenly from his writing, consisting mostly of reminiscences, anecdotal evidence of the absurd, aphorisms à la Oscar Wilde or Marshall McCluhan. The tapes were treated in postproduction according to the same sorts of random projections that direct Cage's more recognizably "musical" output. Some phrases are heard quiet, some loud, some distant, some close up. Frankly, the "quiet" passages are so quiet as to make an appropriate listening venue hard to pinpoint. Most remarkable is Cage's delivery, which is so flawless, so natural, as to be almost eerie in its wholeness. If only the same could be said for the liner notes, which are obscured by a roughshod translation. Such sloppiness is inexcusable, given that the collection repackages a box first issued in 1992. Surely someone could have cleaned things up in the meantime. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars An American Original.......2003-04-23

John Cage was an optimist par excellence. He recorded these diaries for CD at the age of eighty, and it covers his thought from 1964-1984. Using "chance operations," he devised differing type-faces for their publication, but that method is reproduced here in the channel placement and volume of his voice. His wry voice is oddly soothing as he reads his anecdotes, stories and ideas about Buckminster Fuller, Marshall McLuhan, Edwin Schlossberg, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie, Mao Tse Tung, H.D. Thoreau, Norman O. Brown, and assortment of his friends. Sometimes his pacific social anarchist views are naive, but when set in the context of the 1960s and surrounded by these wonderful, hilarious stories they give us a glimpse of this truly original American artist and philosopher. I listen to at least one of these CDs a week, for inspiration's sake...

            Here are some choice Cageisms:

Two musicians who produce the same kind of music is one music too many.

Changed, a mind includes even itself; unchanged, nothing gets in or out.

Ready or not, we are being readied...

Ultimately it's not a question of taste; it's the other way around: Each thing in the world asks us: "what makes you think I'm not something you like"?

Looking for something irrelevant, I found I couldn't find it.
