Album Description

Tibetan Bells II is the outcome of years of study, travel, and experiment by Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings, two musicians resolutely in quest of the "sound between the spaces." Bringing together musical elements never before associated, sounds vastly separate it time, space, and tradition, the musicians have advanced across remote areas of sound. In Tibetan Bells II, the ancient resonances of the bells of Tibet are deployed within a musical framework uncompromisingly 20th century, and Western. Tibetan Bells II is an unprecedented synthesis of the sounds of East and West, past and present. The instruments of this release are exclusively the bells of Tibet. These remarkable instruments have been described elsewhere, yet it is a striking fact that the tones of Tibetan bells, the indigenous products of a highly evolved yet little known Asian culture, have often been confused with the ultra-modern sounds of electronic music. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is no electronic tampering and the resonances of the bells owe nothing to outside sources. Unearthly and timeless, they are their own.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for doing Eastern massage modalities........2005-07-23

I have really enjoyed this whole series. The intensity and focus are just right for doing Eastern styles of massage like Shiatsu.

5 out of 5 stars Zen and the art of musical performance.......2002-03-08

This album along with it's predecessor broke new ground in a variety of ways. The first album released at a time when Western music was becoming more complex could not have provided a more significant contrast with it's stark simplicity.

This, the second album by Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings saw the light of day at the same time as punk was rejecting the pomp and complexity of modern rock and returning to the more simple rock'n'roll roots.

Listening to this album today using the newer technology of Compact Disc, the listener discovers a new realm of listening and experiential pleasure.

Whereas the vinyl album could convey soe of the recorded sound the CD captures much more. And, not only does the sound resonate much more but the space between the sounds is much sharper and clearer. The CD provides the listener with a vehicle with which to transcend the ordinary listening experience and carry one off to a higher plane.

As to the music itself there is a richness which defies description in words. It is evocative, it is soothing, it is ecstatic. It is all this and more.

Again this album would benefit from a remastering for DVD-audio.

Excellent

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Classic.......1999-04-06

Oh, I don't know about "not for the general public." I believe just about everybody could get into the quiet stillness of this music.

This album uses only bells, chimes and Tibetan singing bowls in very languid, slow-evolving zero-time compositions. Perfect for relaxation, meditation, & surrendering to the cosmic void.

Proves conclusively that synthesizers aren't necessary for ambient zone-outs. This album is Wolff/Hennings's best and an ambient classic.

5 out of 5 stars A very special CD for meditators and altered states.......1999-03-27

This CD will take you on a mind journey without any chemicals, this is NOT background music, but music that is designed to be listened to with good equipment or headphones, all of the Wolf/Hennings work is excellent, but the newest is better recorded. Not for the general public.
