Customer Reviews:
shadow.......2004-07-20
Ran across this CD in a bargin bin and am I glad I grabbed it. It's my first foray into "lounge" and it is a great place to be. "Caravan" is my favorite cut on this album. Takes me back to the Sean Connery days of Bond and the Playboy Club I visited in Nassau. Definately a CD collection for the bunch of us who have been displaced by the recent music scene. Have committed to the rest of the collection and hope to not being disappointed. Also another one that is different genre but a great album is '101 strings' "A Night in the Tropics". I have the album looking for the CD.
For super fidelity, DCC is the only way to go!.......2002-08-28
The DCC discs just sound better. Under the direction of Steve Hoffman, this series uses consistently better tapes, and better mastering, with more of that "sounds like a good record, not a CD" quality that the music of this era needs!
Good Effort, but no Ultra-Lounge!.......2002-04-04
DCC has made a fair attempt to offer some swingin' music, although obviously following the lead of Capitol Records' far better series, "Ultra-Lounge". I have about four or five discs in DCC's set, including "Exotica" and both volumes of "Sex Kittens in Hi Fi". Overall, I give DCC a grade of C+, or at best a B- for the Bachelor's Den collection. This disc is a B-.
I have to say that the Mel Henke cuts lift this particular disc above the plain, workaday attempt to cash in on the retro Lounge craze. I'd never heard Henke's songs before, and they're a riot. It's always nice to hear "Caravan", and Ray Coniff offers his version here. "Music to Watch Girls By" with the Harmonicats is also featured. "Swamp-fire" is another good choice, as is "Jazz Pizzicato" and this version "I Get a Kick Out of You". The addition of cuts by Les Baxter and Julie London help round things out, although both are already on "Ultra-Lounge".
However, some cuts on this disc are just not swank. "Topless Dancers of Corfu" is just plain annoying. The music is more in the style of '70s electronica pop, which has no business in a Lounge, let alone your swingin' bachelor pad! And the version of "The Girl From Ipanema" on this disc makes me wish the "girl" would fly back there (wherever Ipanema is), never to return.
While not nearly as classy or wide-ranging as Capitol's "Ultra-Lounge" series, DCC does at least try to provide a swanky set of swingin' CDs with their "Music for a Bachelor's Den" collection. This disc is a pretty good one, with a good selection and competent liner notes.
Lounge music at its sauciest and its goofiest.......1998-08-08
This CD is an excellent example of "Lounge Music," a genre I only recently got into. The tracks are very pleasantly varied; there is something for every taste (among those who can dig this sort of music). The standout tracks, I feel, are the two "PLAYBOY-esque" songs by Mel Henke ("The Lively Ones" and "The Twisters"), a jazzed-up version of Leroy Anderson's "Jazz Pizzacato," and a big-band, no-frills version of "Caravan." P.S.: If you gritted your teeth when I used the phrase "dig this sort of music," then Lounge Music is not your cup of expresso!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing to this I Love Lucy Fan.......2004-10-05
Well, I hate to be so harsh, but I've actually thrown the disc out after listening to it once. I was expecting to hear the songs the way they were done on the show (I am a die-hard fan) -- with Desi's strong vibrant voice and upbeat tempos. And yes, there are moody songs as well, done with beautiful passion by Arnaz on the show -- but instead, songs like Cuban Pete were slowed down almost beyond recognition. Arnaz's voice also doesn't sound as rich and robust as it does on the show (a recording issue?).
I love it when they have Desi sing on the show, whether it be a fast tempo song or a romantic ballad, and I was SO hoping that playing this disc would be like I had taped it directly from the show. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I certainly would give credence to the positive reviews, however, as both reviewers seem well-versed in I Love Lucy/Desi Arnaz. And I respect a performer for waning to do a different interpretation -- but after listening to one version for 30 years, you can imagine that I was a bit thrown! :)
DELIGHTS FROM DESI!.......2002-07-10
I must confess that I have been a dyed-in-the-wool fan of I LOVE LUCY since childhood - and because of that - Desi's music is special to hear. I personally think that his Orchestra was quite underrated; it really had a lovely sound which holds up very well...Remember Lucy and Ricky dancing the Tango to LA CUMPARSITA in the episode where Lucy winds up in Ricky's arms - with 2 dozen eggs smashed in her blouse? I remember the moody and wonderful SIMILAU done superbly by Ricky at the TROPICANA. Other oft-heard standards which are sure to delight fans include GREEN EYES, SIBONEY & GUADALAJARA. Only one complaint: THE STRAW HAT SONG isn't included!
Desi arnaz's "Cocktail Hour".......2000-12-06
The CD collection is excellent! If you are an "I Love Lucy" fan, you will definitely be able to hear some of the more popular songs in their entirety. The songs are somewhat short, but very good. The songs with Amanda's accompaniment are truly sweet, as you will enjoy Amanda's beautiful voice.I am a huge fan of "I Love Lucy" and I own two other CD's featuring those songs that were a part of the hit show. I am ecstatic to own this CD collection because Desi's songs are true Cuban hits. Desi's voice truly captivates me and I can't stop listening to it!

Great old-time singer, HORRIBLE CD! Do not buy!!!.......2005-01-01
HOLY SMOKES! Had I known how BAD this CD was going to be, I would have used ear plugs!
I don't really blame those who have reviewed this CD before me, but maybe they have not heard Maurice Chevalier at his best. This is the WORST DRIVEL I have EVER had the displeasure of listening to! What's that I hear? STATIC!!! ON THIS CD!!!!! Jeez, give me a break!
OK, I know this is the old stuff, but the Maurice Chevalier music I remember growing up with was MUCH better than this, and I'm talking listening to a 30 year-old LP Album, not a CD!
I suspect that the Producers of this CD wanted to save on paying ROYALTIES to the owners of the BETTER material. I'm guessing that this stuff is "Public Domain", and was free for the Producers to release. So for the cost of a dime to produce, they're raking in close to fifteen dollars when people buy.
DEMAND THE GOOD STUFF and pass on this! Save your money!
AH MAURICE!.......2001-06-21
It's always a pleasure to celebrate MOMO who made so many people aware of the FRENCH culture throughout the world. This collection is wonderful;most of it is a reminicence of MAURICE's early years in HOLLYWOOD 1928-1935.It is interesting to notice that many songs here were recorded also in FRENCH.Such is the case with MY LOVE PARADE(mon cocktail d'amour),PARIS,STAY THE SAME(paris,je t'aime d'amour),YOU BROUGHT A NEW KIND OF LOVE TO ME(vous etes mon nouveau bonheur)and JUST A BUM(ma pomme).CHEVALIER also recorded MIMI in both languages. There is one important complaint i have to say:why not mentionning the names of the writers and the composers of the songs?Of course, this is not a good enough reason not to buy this.Maybe they were afraid to paid some of the writers and composers who are still alive. Not everybody for instance knows that THE POOR APACHE was written by RODGERS AND HART for the 1932 film LOVE ME TONIGHT.
Not released 2000.......2000-08-17
OK, the blurb up there says "released 2000." That's for the *CD* which is an aurally cleaned up version of stuff from the 30s and 40s. This is an old record, but a very good one. Chevalier's voice has a perpetual smile, and his accent on classics like "Walkin My Baby Back Home" is something you won't hear from the current swing-era-clone bands. Listening to Chevalier, I feel good. I suspect you will too.

A confection........2005-03-22
Light. Feather light. Fun and delicious. Charles Trenet is jazz that doesn't take it self too seriously. My kids love it, and not just because it has the French (and original) version of Beyond the Sea. This CD is a great bargain. The only reason I gave a 4 over 5 is that this is not essential music. It is well conceived and well executed. Sound quality etc is excellent.
A Superb Collection of Charles Trenet Songs.......2004-02-04
Although it took a few weeks for Amazon.com to obtain this album, it was worth the wait. The songs selected (all pre-WWII) fit perfectly within the "Cocktail Hour" series' theme. All the songs are short and cheerful, putting a smile on your face when you listen. You can tell that Trenet is having fun while singing them. If you are interested in the French lyrics, do a google search for "paroles des chansons de Charles Trenet" and you'll find all of the songs in this album. I am very happy with this purchase.
I don't speak French and it don't matter.......2001-09-01
Certainly a good value for the money with 2 CD's for just a smidge over the price of one. You'll get over 1 1/2 hour's worth of music (the songs are short). And if you're like me and not a francophone, you'll enjoy the music despite not being able to understand the lyrics.
The music is very mood inspiring. I used to play this in my office at work and whenever people would walk in they'd comment on how it felt so relaxing and summerlike. Sure, it was summer when that happened, but I know the real reason was the music. It transported you to a time and place where it was a perpetual late summer (and most likely France).
My favorite song - and this is a bit of a cop-out - is La Mer, also known as Beyond the Sea. This is the version that was out there before Bobby Darin covered it and, for me, it is the definitive version.
Listen and enjoy.

The titles of the respective discs in this two-CD set pretty much tell the story. Disc 1 covers the 1930s and '40s. There are venerable standards like Glenn Miller's "In the Mood," Duke Ellington's "Take The 'A' Train," and Les Brown's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio." Additionally, there are gems from Count Basie, Woody Herman, Louis Armstrong, and the Dorsey Brothers. A total of 14 bands strut their stuff. Disc 2, entitled "Martini Mood," keeps things equally lively and varied. Among the numerous highlights are Benny Carter's "Everybody Shuffle," Andy Kirk's "Walkin' and Swingin'," and Fletcher Henderson's wonderful "Queer Notions." This is a marvelous anthology if you're looking for music, plain and simple--it gives an almost complete overview of the big-band era and, of course, swings like crazy. The one drawback is the lack of session details, but the music speaks well for itself. --Wally Shoup

No Special Effects!.......2001-01-12
No Special Effects! No over-dubbing voices to fatten the sound. No digital electronic vocal processing! Just a lot of hard work, hours of rehearsal and smooth voices with that magical family blend! When you have it completely worked out before you go into the studio to record, all you need to do is nail that one good take. Then it's completely finished. No post production tricks, just those "Live" performances and great arrangements on tape. This collection is a fine example of why I love the music of the 40's.It's fun! It SWINGS!

As jazz, this disc is a bit of an anomaly, as Xavier Cugat wasn't considered a jazz musician in the strict sense. His lively rumba- and xylophone-led ensembles do not, however, lack for pep or exoticism. They enhance the martini-tipping vibe of the Cocktail Hour series of budget-priced two-CD sets. When the band gets the full string and chorale thing going, underpinned by lively exotica rhythms on "Misirlou," "Night Must Fall," and particularly "Temptation," one can't help but imagine the movie Brazil. It's an escape into the music of nostalgia, when days were perhaps more innocent and evenings more romantic. Some of the music presented here falls dangerously close to camp by today's standards ("Walter Winchell Rumba"), and the material doesn't't quite have enough of a Latin feel to ride the current wave. But if you're out to create the mood of a carefree evening aboard a luxury liner, Xavier Cugat just might be the perfect band leader. --Wally Shoup
