With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'
Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26
This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

Love this music.......2007-03-20
This is such a great cd for relaxing with a glass of wine and candles. It really makes the soul feel good.
new age/space music prime choice.......2006-11-07
Kerala Dream is a very special album of space music, akin to that heard on NPR's "Music From the Hearts of Space". The last cut, "Samadhi", is especially fine and contemplative, with a subtle sitar creating soothing melodies and a calming mood. Some of the songs have flute and bass. This album has a variety of sounds, from environmental sounds from India, to vocals and sounds from the Amazon. This album goes especially well with yoga practice and exercises. This album is a exemplary blend of musical forms from India, environmenatal, and Western styles. I use this album to go to sleep to and I frequently do not remember the last cut since by then, I am fast asleep. Very relaxing album and I highly recommend it to yoga enthusiasts.
The title says it all........2006-03-19
If you are looking for music with an Indian flavor, and a sure bet, look no further. This is great music for Yoga practice, or just relaxing. Sample Durga Shakti, and Guru Brahma and you 'll see what I mean. The sounds of Amazonian frogs and birds, the sitar, and awesome vocals make this CD unique, and just a pleasure to listen to.

The Viennese waltz is never far from violinist Andre Rieu's heart, but you won't find a single work from Johann Strauss on Life Is Beautiful. This time around, Rieu is globetrotting for his hummable, danceable melodies--to solid results. "Ole Guapa" is a tango featuring accordion; "Kalinka" is a familiar Russian tune; and "Amazing Grace," "Snow White," and Rieu's "Glenn Miller Melody" are tried-and-true American. Throughout, Rieu and his orchestra perform these works with plenty of style and polish; it's easy to see why he's such a hit with public-television audiences. His shortened version of Bolero may not be the sexiest available, but it is fun. --Jason Verlinde

Romantic.......2003-09-10
Andre Rieu captures the romantic's heart once again in this, what is for the most part, a passionate album.
I feel the best tracks on this album are the russian-themed ones, like the title track (which I listen to on REPEAT when I am looking through my russian countryside or Romanov family album books). I feel that this and "Lara's Theme" (Maurice Jarre's love theme from the film DR. ZHIVAGO (a wonderful book and DVD)! conveys the passion for homeland which I strongly feel beats strongest in the hearts of all russians, more than than any other people). These compositions are so beautiful that it brings tears to the eyes if one surrenders oneself to them.

all i can say about andre,s music is i have over 15 cd,s and love ever one and rate them 5 stars.
Andre Rieu.......2001-09-28
I am a big fan of Andre Rieu but didnot enjoy this as much as several of his earlier recordings. It didn't have quite the zip as "Andre Rieu Live" or "The Holland I Love".
Music is beautiful.......2001-09-11
As soon as I saw Ravel's Bolero performed by Andre Rieu on PBS I wanted to have a copy of this beautiful album.. classical music that makes you get up and dance..

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Like the instrument he plays, the centuries-old shakuhachi flute, Riley Lee has found he has staying power. Lee, an Australian esteemed as a dai shihan (grand master) of the traditional Japanese instrument, found his first audience in the alternative-health community during the 1980s, when cassettes of his unhurried explorations of the shakuhachi's broad expressive palette became popular items. Narada has periodically reissued these evocative works on CD and, considering how the pace of life has intensified since the music's original release dates, the soothing, ancient wind that blows through Lee's shakuhachi seems more welcomed and therapeutic than ever. Buddha's Dream was first released in 1984, and the ethereal expositions found on it--as hokey as this may sound to the unconverted--effectively encourage states of introspection and stillness that are a balm to the body and spirit. Broken into shorter segments than the prolonged improvisations found on such jewels as Sanctuary and Oriental Sunrise, Buddha's Dream at times involves more notes and occasionally conveys a stronger hint of mystery than is found on either of those lovely discs. Still, the same sweetness and gentle spirit radiates in pieces such as "Return of the Fisherman," "Seabreezes," and "As the Water Flows." A splendid choice as an audio backdrop for mediation or massage. --Terry Wood

BUDDAH'S DREAM.......2007-01-12
This cd just transends you to a special spiritual and calming place where we all need to escape on a daily basis.Fantastic cd to to start your new day beautiful music or to wind down after a hard day at work.A great cd to do gi going, yoga, tai chi or just to simply meditate...I absolutely love this cd and so will you!!!!!
to dream or to meditate?.......2005-05-25
I first heard music from Riley Lee while in an acupuncture session and decided to listen to some titles myself and choose one for home. So far, this is my favorite, though I have not heard them all. This is a very soothing, totally instrumental, wind instruments only and has an excellent flow. I do not happen to enjoy nature sounds or multiple instrumentals, so this was particularly perfect for me. If you have the same taste in simple, relaxing melody you will enjoy this immensely for either meditation, relaxation or at bedtime. This is even a great soother for children since it is calming without having the "spooky" overtones that some relaxation music can have. Enjoy some peacefullness.
Very soothing, calming, expansive mood........2001-07-11
This is my first Riley Lee CD and, while I'm no expert on the shakuhachi flute as is the previous reviewer, I really enjoy this CD! It sets a wonderful mood for meditation as well as background when studying or working on the computer. I'm listening to it now through headphones and am able to hear subtleties that I haven't heard before. It's not overbearing though and allows you to let your mind relax and roam freely or to easily focus your meditations. All the tracks flow smoothly together and all are pleasing to the ear. I highly recommend it!
Riley Lee is Great, but not this album!.......2001-06-30
I have a number of Riley's ablums and they are great, but this album is an exercise in overproduction and lack of focus. This is probably not entirely Riley's fault. The production use of overdubs, excessive reverb and occasional echo totally ruin the subtles that the shakuhachi can produce. IMO, Riley is one of the masters of shak, and usually his non-traditional (Japanese) pieces are beautiful - but not on this CD. May I strongly recommed "Oriental Sunrise" if you are new to Shakuhachi and Riley Lee. His new "Postcards..." CD is also winner!
Not Enough To Tell.......2001-06-06
I'm sorry but I don't hear a long enough cut, to tell if I like it or not. I have been playing music off and on, since I got out of the Army in 69. I can't get a feel for the texure. Yours Truly Bob Dowell

Joy!.......2001-12-23
This album fills me with Joy and the Spirit of Nature, Love and Peace. The voices and music of Lisa and Ani are wonderful.
Soft, Rich and Enlightening.......2001-04-25
I'll never forget the first time I heard this album. I had just bought it, and slipped it in my car stereo. I was driving through the city in the rain. It was so beautiful, it was like I had been suddenly transported into a rain forest. Behind the voices there were soft flutes and gentle sounds of nature and rain. Lisa Thiel has a silky, soothing voice and sings spiritual songs oriented toward the Goddess. On this album, she teams up with Ani Williams who has a lighter, crisper voice. And together, they make an album that has almost a Native American feel to it.
Some of the songs here are included on other Lisa Thiel albums like "Rainbow Woman" and "The Giveaway Song". But these are slightly different versions, and there are PLENTY of new songs. The album has a long running time. And you come away from it feeling as though you've just visited somewhere very sacred. I consider this gentle album to be one of the highlights of my collection.

This early work of Lisa Thiel only hints at the wonderful songs she's written and sung since. Not the best of investments of either your time or your money. Try Lady of the Lake or Journey to the Goddess instead.

Album Description
A beautiful tribute to a great American musician. Folk songs, spirituals, and ballads popularized by Norman Luboff Choir, performed lovingly by some who toured and performed with him for more than a decade.
What a joy this CD is for Jackson and me! It allows us to celebrate Norman's universal influence and to share some of his greatness as musician.
I met Norman at a Choral Associates Workshop, a week-long educational feast introducing the writer behind those fabulous choral arrangements. I auditioned for him, met Jackson, and entered a beautiful world intertwined with impeccable musicianship, personal inspiration, friendship, and deep affection. The circle of musicians with whom I have come into contact since that week in June 1973 continues to nourish my musical soul today. So many of my life's connections were established that week, including meeting Jackson's touring friend, tenor-percussionist and then budding composer Chip Davis. The thread binding us and igniting a strong influence of excellence is Norman Luboff.
Norman's arrangements are exemplary of his genius. His appreciation for folk music is evidenced by his sincere and respectful treatment of each melody. Texts literally come alive with his nuance on important words, sensitive rubato, and expansive harmonizations. He always implored singers to sing folk or popular songs in the vernacular, as they are spoken.
Norman would enjoy the Cantorum's wonderful singing -- their robust voices, their natural sentimentality toward the lyrics, and the depth of their passion. These are the kinds of musicians that Norman engaged: fascinating singers with great voices, differing vocal timbre and energies. The fantastic mix of solo voices comfortable in both the popular and classical worlds contributes to the unique Luboff choral sound.
Almeda Berkey Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, Conductor
Customer Reviews:
Norman Luboff Remembered.......2007-01-10
A very poor recording, almost amateurish. The voices seem to be adequate but the recording is so poor it is difficult to tell. This recording goes into my "I heard it once and that's enough" pile. The purchase was a mistake.
Please, more Choir, less Instruments!.......2005-06-08
I agree with the first reviewer. At age 56, I heard these guys live, and the arrangements were sublime. The vocals were amazing. Here, the instruments almost drown out the choir! Perhaps the pianist and bass player were relatives of the producer?? I would recommend almost any other Luboff CD over this one, even the ones reproduced with pops and hisses from the LP.
"Colorado Trail" is OK. "Shenandoah", one of the Choir's signature songs, is totally messed up.
Very disappointing, I'm sorry.
"A" FOR EFFORT.......2004-06-28
As a Norman Luboff Choir fan, I was extremely pleased to hear that a modern high fidelity remake was available of some of Mr. Luboff's works. Thank you to Mr. Berkey for resurrecting Mr. Luboff. I hope more discs are in the works or planned without the following shortcoming.
Unfortunately, the disc was disappointing because of what may appear to some to be a silly reason but not to me. The recording engineer probably did everything right except establish the presence of the choir relative to the instruments. Listen to a Norman Luboff Choir vinyl album or re-release on CD to hear what I mean.
In the original records, the choir is acoustically featured while in this CD, it's just another choir with equal emphasis placed on the orchestra. I hope that in future releases if any, the producer demands the same emphasis be placed on the choir voices as was originally applied in the recordings. After all, it is the Norman Luboff Choir voices I want to hear.
Norman.......2003-05-16
...I want to thank Almeda and Jackson Berkey for helping to keep Norman's legacy alive and Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum is wonderful.
The choir is superb.......2003-03-20
This CD is a Nebraska product, and a fine one it is! The director of the choir, Almeda Berkey, has combined with her husband, composer and professional pianist, Jackson, to produce this nostalgic look at the wonderful arrangements of their former mentor and employer, Norman Luboff. The liner notes in the accompanying booklet tell of the surprising association of Omaha's Chip Davis as a singer in the Luboff choir, along with Almeda. The choir is superb, well balanced, displaying beautiful voices and a thoroughly professional sound equal to that any of the Luboff choirs on the twelve LPs this author owns...Good variety in programming is a plus, as folk songs, pop songs, folk hymns and spirituals are all presented. Congratulations to the Berkeys, Recording Engineer Clete Baker and all involved on a first-rate recording!"

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-05-25
"Touch the Sun" is the third installment of pianist Eric McCarl's "Trilogy of Light," a collection of original pieces written over the course of the past twenty years. The fifteen piano solos range from quiet and pensive to upbeat and jazzy, with the majority being more on the reflective side. Overall, this CD has a warmer, more contented mood than the two previous releases, although it certainly isn't breezy. The music has enough structure to hold it together, and enough improvisation to make it feel spontaneous and in the moment. McCarl's playing style is always expressive and full of color, and the sound of his piano is beautiful.
The CD opens with "Journey's End," a piece that has a sense of moving forward and also of looking inward. Perhaps triumph without victory as yet? The title track is a bit more ambient and floating, with lots of open space between the musical phrases. "Alone Place" is also very open and minimal, with the damper pedal creating an echo effect that is both lonely and chilling - this is definitely one of the darker tracks. "Soft Light" is very calming, peaceful, and gentle. Most of the notes are in the upper and middle registers on the piano, but McCarl brings in some deep bass notes here and there that give the piece a different dimension. I really like it! "Walk On Water" is another favorite. The first part is structured and melodic, and then segues into a more improvised section that seems both reverent and questioning. The simple rhythm is quietly intense, creating a sense of peace and calm. Very effective! My favorite piece is "Sun Goes Down," which begins with a bluesy feeling and a slinky rhythm that is infectious. The piece is very free, but weighted by some deep bass accents. Some sections sound improvised, and the second half of the piece is more rubato with the original rhythm weaving in and out. My other favorite is "Blue Blue City," which is rhythmic, jazzy, and very, very cool ( a double-entendre where both meanings are accurate!). The closing track, "Window SIll," returns to a reflective mood with lots of open spaces between the musical thoughts, and passages that are full of passion - a serene way to end this impressive album and the Trilogy itself.
Having spent so much of his adult life working on the music for this project, it will be interesting to see where Eric McCarl goes next, musically. In the meantime, treat yourself to "Touch the Sun," "Atlantis Lost," and "Seeking the Light," aka "The Trilogy of Light." This is music that is meant to be listened to, not relegated to the background. Find a comfy spot, close your eyes, and let the music take you away! Recommended!
