Editorial Reviews
The INDIEcator, October 2001
This is an absolutely fascinating album of soundscapes and getaways. The music on here is definitely mood evoking.

5 out of 5 stars great .......2007-07-25

This cd is loaded with great Ploynesian drum rhythms - excellent for dancing or as background music for a luau. These are authentic melodies not orchestrated versions so they may seem "raw" if you are used to the "Lawrence Welk style" of Hawaiian/Polynesian music. However, if you are looking for REAL Polynesian drumming then this is the cd for you.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Tahitian dancers too!.......2006-04-17

Not only is this album great to listen to... it is also helpful to beginning Ari Tahiti students who need to hone their faarapu and tairi skills. Because the drummers can't follow you home and play while you practice in front of your bathroom mirror, this album provides basic beats that every Tahitian dancer should be able to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds of the Islands.......2000-06-30

In the days of old, every social, political and cultural event in an islander's life was accompanied by the beating of drums. In this compilation , the importance of the drum in the cultural life of pacifica is transmitted by the drums' varying beats and rhythms. "Maha" and "Pae" reminds the listener (Pacific Islander or not) of what has been lost, but most importantly of what has been preserved.

I recommend South Pacific Drums to all Pacific Islanders who wish to re-connect and perpetuate their culture as well as to those interested in the rich culture of pacifica.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic Hawaiian Music.......2006-11-10

I purchased the Volume 2, a long time ago and recently found Volume 1 here on Amazon. Great purchase, no vocals. If you're looking for great classic hawaiian music look no further, if you're looking for some of the more modern hawaiian music try Keali'i Reichel, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Daniel Ho, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Music.......2004-11-04

This is one of the best instrumental dvd's I have heard. Listen if you want to hear excellent Hawaian music.

4 out of 5 stars "Lighten up, Snobz, & have a little phun!".......2004-08-20

Kidd Squidd from Oracle, Arizona It's funny how some "collectors" or "music conosieurs" <(sp?) get their shorts in a bind when they smell somethin"phony".They're dyin' to tell the world about the "real thing" & how much they know about it. I know, because I've been guilty of the "snob disease" from time to time. I probably know more about the music of 20th century pop culture than most people on earth. But I've come to realize(I'm 56) that there's a lot of ways to judge music, and just because you know a lot about the history of a certain style of music (Hawaiian, f'rinstance), and have a huge collection of rare records, doesn't mean that a lighthearted & fun approach to said music (New Hawaiian Band) can't be a lot of fun. It's so important to have a sense of wonder and humor about it all. Music is a gift to us all from a higher source (God? Aliens? the ghost of Slim Gaillard's Great Great Grandpappy?...), and we should enjoy it and cherish it on ALL levels, including the lightheated, frivolous level. Then you'll find The New Hawaiian Band to be quite a fun ride. Aloha, you Sonic Dreamerz! Love ya, Baby! Kidd Squidd, DJ, Musicologist, Lover Of Life.

3 out of 5 stars Only for tourists.......2003-02-27

Just looking at the titles of the songs on this CD tells you that this is not REAL Hawaiian music. Oh, the music is nice and great for background. But if you're serious about Hawaiian music, Hawaii indigenous culture, both 'historical' and modern, then look elsewhere. There ARE artists who perform REAL Hawaiian music, and sing in Hawaiian. YOu can get 'historical' music, there is an excellent 2-CD set from the U-Hawaii. The Maui Historical Society just across from the Banyon tree in Lahaina carries modern REAL Hawaiian music, the [local store] in Kahulaui also offers great choices. The Bishop Museum in Honolulu has some good CDs too. For modern music, look up Amy Gilliom or the slack key guitar masters, or Keola Beamer... Amazon has them listed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hawaiian.......2003-02-19

Bought this for my wife. Now she can't get it out of my CD player. Classic Hawaiian music. Sitting on your deck out back at night with a tropical drink in hand brings back FLOODS of memories of numerous Hawaiian vacations. This makes me want to go back!!

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of it!.......2006-04-10

Can't get enough of this cd Aquaria. I love it and have sometimes kept playing it all day long repeatedly. I love New Age Jazz, and this cd indeed takes me to another realm of listening pleasure in New Age melodies.

5 out of 5 stars New Age Meets Trance.......2006-03-06

I bought this recording after hearing a few tracks while browsing in a Nature's Gifts store. The proprietor kept a small collection of recordings way in the back of the store. They were mostly off-mainstream works that would appeal to eclectics. So, naturally, he caught me.

As this recording ages in my library, I find myself revisiting it regularly. The regular rhythm track over-washed with vocals and synths is soothing. I often listen to Aquaria before I drift off to sleep. The rhythms and synths help calm my thoughts. I also like Aquaria as background when I'm doing something that does not require quiet.

I'm not a hard-core trance listener and I suspect that Aquaria is much toned down from the intensity sought by trance-dancers. I would place this recording in the New Age genre. So, be forewarned--this is not trance music.

The cynic in me wants to demean the "This is the voice of Aquaria, this is the voice of the sea" mantra. Had these words been spoken in another language they would blend into the music and add to the overall effect. The vocals might bother some listeners (as the one reviewer mentioned that the vocals sound "silly"); they don't bother me. But again be forewarned that the vocals might not work for you.

The production quality is first rate. I listen carefully and I can't hear any mistakes in the recording or engineering.

Aquaria works for me. The work is substantially different from most of what I listen to and is a wonderful respite from more mainstream works. I like Arkenstone's musical ideas, the expression thereof, and the vocals don't bother me. Aquaria is gentle trance music.

4 out of 5 stars Surprised that I enjoyed it.......2005-10-14

As a general rule, I don't care for trance music, but when I saw it in the library I thought "Hey, it's Arkenstone so I'll give it a chance." I found it to be a nice ambient music without going too far with the trance rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2004-07-29

I picked up a used copy of this CD on a whim last fall sometime, before I was familiar with either Arkenstone. I thought I'd heard of the name, and the title sounded nice, so I bought it. Since then I've barely been able to take this out of my stereo! It's some of the most soothing, relaxing music I've ever heard - I put it on softly sometimes when I'm having trouble sleeping. I'm very much looking forward to purchasing some of her other CD's, and very highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Special Pure Innocent .......2006-08-09

I love listneing to this. It seemed a bit silly at first on a few tracks-- sort of simple repetitive New Agey but it's one that really blesses and sounds great in total. It feels like angels visit and good healers fill my home. I bought it just for track 2 but it's all one of my favorites now after having it about 3 weeks. I also love her cd Jewel in the Sun, which is more upbeat and moves with a dreamy good sexuality whereas this touches differently at the transcendent blessedness of spiritual healing in gentleness and deeper. Spirits of the Rainforest is also excellent, very alive and immersive in a different real-felt place.

4 out of 5 stars *Silence Inducing* .......2006-02-04

Less than a year ago,I happened to have heard "The Angel's Voice" somewhere and couldnt help but be completely transfixed by the rather silence inducing music. It is easily the best track of it's kind on the disc. There are times when I fall asleep listening to it repeatedly and at some times I like playing it while I'm alone. Not many people have heard of Diane Arkenstone. Her music sometimes reduces me to my own soul where everything I fear or can possibly be paranoid about is simply non existant.
Other tracks on Healing Spirit that really do pin you are "Ocean Of Stars" , "Waters of life" and "The Secret Garden" I cant help but add some light criticism, I wish she had more tracks like Angel's voice. Other tracks on the disc can get a bit monotonous.

Definite buy, even if you're remotely interested.

P.S - Diane Arkenstone looks like an angel and I dont even like using that word.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful; Be Ready for a Transformation!.......2005-03-30

Is music capable of moving and elevating one to a place of sublime yet ecstatic transformation?

This is absolutely mesemerising music from Diane Arkenstone. "Transformation" is exactly the potential, in listening to the subtle interplays of its ethereal tone and pulse. If I close my eyes and relax, I become aware of a different time and place, and upon return I feel surprsingly refreshed and relaxed.

Ambient, trance, space music themes and shades of Tangerine Dream-scapes all flow and merge into a beautifully uplifting sound tapestry that is not only immensely enjoyable - but is true to the title in its influence to change our very space, even if but for a few precious moments.

5 out of 5 stars Tranquility.......2004-11-18

Although vastly different from her other two CD's, this album is enchanting. More soothing and calm than "Aquaria" and "Jewel in the Sun", this CD has an almost haunting quality to it. I can drop off to sleep in an instant listening to this gorgeous music - it's the type of CD I would put on softly in a fussy baby's room to let her fall asleep to. Perfect for meditation, relaxation, studying, or just if you want to feel at peace. I will buy any new music Diane comes out with, I've loved every single thing she's put out!

5 out of 5 stars Sends me to Sleep .......2004-09-29

I listen to this CD as I am drifting off into sleep and the feeling the music gives me is one of peace and serenity. Often, I keep track #8 on repeat for weeks and have it constantly playing in my bedroom. The music is so calming and peaceful. Excellent for prayers and meditation or rituals. Diane Arkenstone is a genius!

3 out of 5 stars Some native, some bar music.......2000-08-26

Been to Tahiti & listened to dozens of Tahitian CDs. The drumming is great. Some of the recording seems to have all but lost the left channel. Tracks 16-17 are a jazz band, I guess one would call them? -- reminds me of 1950's Hawaiian jug band music. There's also some flute. A nice variety, but not universally the very best performances nor recording.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Haole (caucasian) gal from Mainland USA.......2000-06-21

From the moment I wrestled this CD from its plastic wrapper, it became one of my favorites. I pop it in whenever I need instant energy. You absolutely cannot sit still when this is playing. It is fabulous. I originally purchased it to use as background music for a backyard luau, but now I exercise to it, do housework to it, etc. There are some songs on the CD (singers accompanied by guitars and other musical instruments), but it is mainly comprised of drumming. Very Polynesia! Very provocative! If you've ever been to a luau and been captivated by its live entertainment, this CD is for you! Bring those tribal beats into your home today!

5 out of 5 stars TAHITI RULEZ!.......2000-06-15

this really is the BEST luau party music, esp. for pre-teen/teen parties. we bought/borrowed 5 other CDs and none were right until we found this one!

4 out of 5 stars Old Hawaiian Fun!.......2000-09-15

When my daughter and I started taking Hula classes just for fun a couple of years ago, I fell upon this CD and took a chance! It is a CD with alot of familiar old Hawaiian tunes from the past. Little Brown Gal was my daughter's first Hula dance to learn with Hukilau as my son and his friend's favorite song to sing. A great CD to have at a Luau since there are many first hulas included to learn such as Keep your Eyes on the Hands and Little Grass Shack. We have ventured further into the Hawaiian melodies for our Hulas, but this was a great start to fall in love with some of the old-fashioned Hawaiian tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2006-07-22

The songs on here are a mix of classical "Aussi" songs such as Waltzin Madilta to the more traditional beer drinking songs.

They are easy to sing along with because none of them are fuzzy or too fast. It is a great introduction to Austrailin music. There is the 'lingo' in the songs and some of the typical 'Australian' type instruments that you might think of when you think of Australia.

Overall this is a great fun CD.

I recently returned from Australia and was anxious to remember some of the funny and poignant songs I heard during my stay. This album has them all - from "Pub with No Beer" to "And the Band Played Waltzin' Matilda." The versions are traditional, and easy to sing along with. Be sure to get this CD to play at your next "Aussie Bar-B-Q."

5 out of 5 stars awesome folk music.......2002-07-23

This had some excellent songs. A good mix from pub, to patriotic and humor. Hear the lingo, hear the classics.

I am so glade I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful & Ambient.......2005-11-09

This is another album I purchased recently, recommended by my friend Chellie. She send me the mp3s of "JEWEL IN THE SUN" and "BEYOND BORDERS" and I just had to experience the entire album for myself. Once again, I regret having not discovered particular music sooner. Diane's timeless, carefree music has touched my ear for music and has somewhat expanded my CD collection larger. As soon as I received this CD in the mail, it went into the stereo and I was immediately blown away by the rich, crystalline sound, melody & far-off ambience. Every track transcends you into another time, place & mood. It certainly pays to have friends with such great taste in music. Thanks, Chellie, for another excellent choice or recommendation! Personally, I find "JEWEL IN THE SUN" to be the perfect soundscape to anyone's hectic workday, whether you're in the bath or reading or even while cooking or cleaning. While the songs are suitably longer in duration, the album seems a bit too short. That's what happens when you delve into an album of such captivating peacefulness.

Everyone whom I've played this CD for, has liked it on the very 1st play. I'm referring to my extremely music-fussy parents, friends & my partner, in this case. If guess if they can like Enya's music, they surely can put up with Diane's melodic genius...because Diane Arkenstone has outdone Enya by far...although Enya's music is one of a kind. Like Andrew O stated in his review, I also keep coming back to this album, among DA's other music. This one has held solid for me since the first listen. I highly suggest you extract the CD onto your computer because you'll be playing it an awful lot. Unfortunately, even CDs wear out. So, I've extracted my CD and from now on, no matter where I am, I can have DA's music at a couple clicks of a button or mouse.

About the packaging...which nobody else has mentioned...the CD comes in a lovely tri-fold digi-pack. In this digi-pack, there are lovely graphics & a note from Diane, to her husband, David. Album Credits (Short but sweet) are on the inside of the left flap, clearly written & are part of the sunny, colorful artwork. The CD itself is gorgeous & adorned with gold, copper & black. It's very clever & striking when you pick up the disc.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic and Upbeat.......2004-11-25

Each selection on this CD has a melody, which can be defined as a series of notes preceived by the mind as a unity. You will not find spaced-out ambience here. Few people realize that Diane Arkenstone has undergone several pacemaker implants and will more than likely have future heart surgeries. In spite of her pain and lifestyle constrictions, Diane constinues to write, perform, and produce music that uplifts the soul. I love this CD and play it as background music when correcting student papers. I've upgraded the stereo in my car and have found that that's really the best place to hear the power and beauty of Jewel. Keep on keeping on, Diane.

5 out of 5 stars Happy and inspiring.......2004-11-15

After falling in love with Diane Arkenstone's "Aquaria" album, I had to buy Jewel in the Sun. I love it just as much, but for slightly different reasons. While Aquaria seems a bit darker and almost mysterious, this album is filled with more upbeat melodies and sunny tracks - hence the name of the album and the golden color of the CD cover, as opposed to the dark blue coloring of the Aquaria and The Healing Spirit albums. Listening to this CD puts me in a good mood no matter what kind of funk I'm in; it's happy and upbeat and carefree. A gorgeous and very well put together album!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-02-18

Heard about her from listening to 'new age radio' via the internet and was captivated. I got this CD and I just love it. Its been in my car for ages, played over and over. I swap it out and play something else but keep coming back to this one somehow. Spiritual, soothing, just very nice. Makes me feel better after a hard day at work. Well recommended. In my opinion this is a better CD than any of her others, I've also got a few of her others but I keep coming back to this one. Rhythmic, melodic, with musical contruction and progression. Great vocals, something akin to enya, enigma, deep forest but somehow more meaningful. If this Cd wears out or gets damaged, I would buy it again...

5 out of 5 stars very good mood music.......2003-08-15

I got into this via listening to a "new age radio" stream and was captivated. Loved this stuff, its a bit like "Enya" stuff, but with a smooth beat, if you like this also try sarah mclachlan. nice music that you can put on your Cd during a candlelight dinner... or whatever. Wont wake the neighbors. Good quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great, burnished voice.......2004-05-11

My own personal favorite here is "White Ginger Blossoms," where Alfred Apaka's voice is perfectly phrased and a precise, deft, delicate touch. Some of the faster party music on the record is pretty kitschy, but especially in the slower tunes this is some of the very best Hawaiian vocal music out there. Overall, this record is a real trip down memory lane and a great pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful vintage touristy hawaiian vocal music.......2000-05-31

alfred apaka's voice is bing crosbyish and slightly overpolished, but with a nice tendency to back off in volume and intensity right when the schmaltzometer is about to peg. good crooner stuff here. hell, you can even swap back and forth between 'lovely hula hands' and 'lovely hula girl'. that's enough to keep even the most lecherous of us busy!

very nice moments on this cd. i especially like the viki ti trio on 'kalua'. music has changed a lot since those days. this is a sweet trip back.

the recording sounds a couple of generations down from a master reel, and some of the equalization choices are a little out there (the vocal on 'gay hawaiian party' almost sounds at first like it was intended to mimic a radio broadcast). still, this cd is worth a listen. if you don't turn it up too loud, the abnormal tape hiss isn't too apparent. glad i bought 'hawaiian favorites'.
