"Stardom Road is a collection of covers chosen by the former Soft Cell frontman to tell his life story.It consists of his favourite songs by other people and is produced by Tris Penna: the album also features Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons, Jools Holland and St Etienne's Sarah Cracknell, who duets with Almond on the Dusty Springfield song "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten".
This is a clever idea. Marc Almond has chosen a series of cover versions - with one exception - and they chronicle his story in sequence. What a story it is, too.
From his successful partnership with Dave Ball in Soft Cell, through to the famous duet with Gene Pitney, he has continued working right through to 2004. Following his motorbike accident, this album brings us to the here and now.
"Sixties classic "I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten" is wonderfully evocative and features the vocals of Sarah Cracknell. Likewise, Al Stewart's "Bedsitter Images" is a perfect cover as it reminds you of Marc's very own Bedsit land.
This is a very moving and beautifully crafted album. Far from being cover after cover, karaoke style, there is a journey feel to the proceedings.
"Backstage I'm A Lonely" is a tribute to the late Gene Pitney and it really is a tear jerker as a result.
But it is far from maudlin as proven by the upbeat tale of surviving against the odds, "Happy Heart".
The new track "Redeem Me" sounds like a classic already. Marc has never sounded as chipper as he does here.
Kitsch, camp, melodramatic, yet full of heartfelt emotion.
This is a fantastic comeback.

If you have seen a Delta Airlines television commercial that features an African-sounding, childlike choral chant in its soundtrack, you have experienced the title track from this album. Adiemus is largely the brainchild of former Soft Machine keyboardist Karl Jenkins, with participation from independent vocalist Miriam Stockley, a native of South Africa; the London Philharmonic Orchestra (which Jenkins conducts on this album); and others. The music of Adiemus will prompt inevitable comparisons to acts such as Dead Can Dance, Enigma, and Deep Forest. In the album's liner notes, Jenkins describes Songs of Sanctuary as "an extended choral-type work based on the European classical tradition, but where the vocal sound is more akin to 'ethnic' or 'world' music." The music of Adiemus, Jenkins later explains, includes voices, but not lyrics: "The text was written phonetically with the words viewed as instrumental sound, the idea being to maximise the melisma (an expressive vocal phrase) by removing the distraction, if one can call it that, of words." Ranging in mood from gently tribal to ecclesiastical, Adiemus succeeds in creating the impression of an enchanted global youth or female choir, yet one less forebodingly mysterious than any of the groups previously mentioned. Here you will find textures similar to the ethereal vocalese found in some of Mike Oldfield's more beatific works. The textures are largely uplifting, set within intelligent, classically influenced musical frameworks. A nice package for fans of alternative chant. --Terry Wood

He loves classical music, and he likes this CD.. I prefer the Irish Tenors or the music from LORD OF THE RINGS.....as a farm girl growing up, I had no exposure to Opera ( though I think Tomcat fights around a breeding queen comes pretty close to it). My idea of classical music is BEST OF THE EAGLES.

If you're a big fan of Petula Clark like I am, then this collection is for you. Not only does it have her big hits on it, there is a fine selection of some of her best album work. The three CDs show her versatility. I truly believe that Petula can sing anything, whether it be rock, easy listening, blues, or country. I particularly like her cover versions of popular songs. She truly makes them her own. Enjoy!

There must be a million Petula Clark compilations out there but if you are looking for the best of the best, I would recommend "The Ultimate Collection" (2002), Kaleidoscope (2003) and this three disc set which covers mostly her 60s and early 70s work.

All the major hits, including "Downtown", "I Know A Place", "My Love" and "This is my Song" are spread out amongst the three CDs, in addition to the many album tracks and covers featured here. This may be too much for the casual Petula Clark, but if you are burgeoning fan like I am, this is worth adding to your collection.

Petula Clark is more than well represented in this mostly 60's 3 cd set.She shows her romantic and tuneful craftmanship on these A and B sides with some select cuts from her warner years.
I found this 3 cd set broken into themes(each cd),as fresh as pop music comes. Her collaborator Tony Hatch is largely responsible for the creative original song writing. Petulas covers of Charlie Chaplin's "Eternally","Smile",and "This is my song" are romantic and deliciosly produced.You'll be going"uptown" if you buy this beautiful set.It is collector colorful,and any Petula fan should be proud to own it!
This cd set has so many hits it reminds one of Petulas clout as England's most popular female singers of the 60's.She rivals Dusty Springfield in her range and good taste in production.

This triple CD focuses on Petula's most popular years, with a theme for each CD. The first CD shows what the swinging sixties was as all about with plenty of up-tempo rocking songs. It includes the inevitable big hits - Downtown, I know a place, I couldn't live without your love, Don't sleep in the subway, Color my world, A sign of the times, Round every corner, The other man's grass is always greener - but it also includes many minor hits and album tracks. The second CD is described as mellow but is really an easy-listening collection. Some of the songs (including This is my song, Kiss me goodbye and Happy heart) do not fit my definition of mellow. With fewer hits than the first CD, this CD is dominated by album tracks. The third CD is supposed to showcase Petula the diva by including some of her most dramatic performances that don't belong on either of the first two discs. Actually, some tracks would sit comfortably on one or other of the first two discs but I can see what the compiler was trying to do with this set.

Aside from Petula's own hits, the songs are a mix of covers and originals. Some of the originals (You're the one, Call me, I don't know how to love him) later became hits for others and are not generally thought of as Petula's songs. Among the other originals, I particular like 31st of June, which rarely appears on compilations of Petula's music.

Among the covers, there are plenty of song that fans of sixties music will recognize, all of which Petula sings superbly. I was particularly pleased to find Have I the right (Honeycombs) and I want to hold your hand (Beatles). If Petula had recorded faithful covers of these songs, they would have belonged on the first CD, but Petula's very romantic interpretations of these songs belong where they are - on the second CD. Other notable covers include A groovy kind of love, Games people play, San Francisco, Let it be me, Here there and everywhere, Hey Jude, Fool on the hill and Windmills of your mind, but there are plenty of other classic covers here too.

Of course, if you want Petula's pre-Downtown music (including Sailor and Romeo), you must look elsewhere (and it's easy to find), but this outstanding compilation provides a thorough overview of Petula's best years.

Holy countercultural confluence! For the cause of fundraising for the defense of a trio of legally bound Arkansas headbangers--one of whom is currently on death row on the basis of hearsay testimony--Henry Rollins has resurrected the sacrosanct songs of his legendary former Los Angeles hardcore band Black Flag. Much as he first joined the popular Flag by jumping on stage and grabbing the microphone, Rollins here assigns lead vocals to a bewildering array of guests, including Iggy Pop, Dean Ween, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Araya of Slayer, Queens of the Stone Age, and Ice T. The Rollins Band convincingly serves as caustic backing band throughout. Protest music godfather Chuck D. of Public Enemy appears as well, though simply to introduce the album. Many of the singers, whether inspired by the cause itself or the muscular caliber of Black Flag's music, deliver the rebellious message with heartfelt intensity. Motorhead leader Lemmy's ripping version of "Thirsty and Miserable" is a stunning highlight, as is Hank Williams III's psychotic "No Values." Former Flag singers Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski bring their veteran intensity, and Rollins himself shouts "My War," "TV Party," "Black Coffee," "Annihilate This Week," "Slip It In," and the title track. (Flag guitarist-lyricist Greg Ginn is notably absent, though his trademark clear Lucite guitar joins the West Memphis Three defendants on the cover artwork.) The participating musicians' anger and frustration over the West Memphis Three case, which has been detailed in HBO's Paradise Lost documentaries, is well matched with the giant fury of this band. --Ian Christe

Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three is a case of good music being used to support a bad cause. The music, contributed by the likes of Henry Rollins and other leading musicians is pretty good on the whole. However, there is quite a bit of pro-West Memphis 3 stuff on this CD and all of the profits from sales of this CD goes to help legal efforts on behalf of the WM 3.

This would be a good thing if there was good reason to believe that the WM 3 really were framed for a crime that they commit. Problem is the pro-WM 3 material on this CD contains many factual errors and fails to make a persuasive case to believe in the innocence of the WM 3.

If you want to listen to this good music, then the thing to do is to look for it at your local public library, secondhand music shop or borrow it from a friend. Don't let your good money go to support a bad cause like the West Memphis 3.

Black Flags is undeniably one of the greatest punk bands ever and it is great to hear artists sush as Hank Williams III pay tribute to this great band. Plus it gives attention to a great injustice. Help support the West Memphis 3!

Those who will enjoy this disc are people who have both an understanding of great music and a respect for the law. Those who do not care about either probably will not care for this. Certainly this is for fans of Black Flag, Henry Rollins, and all the artists compiled here. (Ryan Adams contributes a great version of "Nervous Breakdown" and Hank III does "No Values," which is simply incredible.)

This is not for fans of ignorance or complacency in any of its forms. Certainly NOT for fans who think Henry Rollins is just trying to "free convicted murderers." And certainly NOT for fans who think that people who read Stephen King books are all Satanic killers.

Watch the "Paradise Lost" HBO documentaries, read "Devil's Knot" and "Blood of Innocents" and form educated opinions. Don't impugn Rollins or any of these musicians for having higher standards for OUR legal system and wanting to make sure we have the truth. When three people are convicted on hearsay and circumstantial evidence and one is sentenced to death, you can expect people from all over the country to take notice and want to get involved, because some of us still believe in justice and the separation of church and state. Anything less is un-American.

This is Henry Rollins' attempt to raise money for the truth, whatever it may be. Rollins told one victim's family as much. If the WM3 are proven guilty, at least we will have more to rely on than hearsay and Satanic Panic (you know, like actual, concrete evidence, which has been absent from this case since the start). The phrase "innocent until proven guilty" simply does not apply to this case. The prosecution proved nothing, except that West Memphis, Arkansas is a place free-thinking people probably shouldn't visit. Pardon the rest of America for thinking Metallica CDs aren't quite enough to prove someone is a murderer.

This is a great effort on the part of all the musicians involved, and it proves that ignorance still has opposition in America.

(...) The WM3 were convicted of the crimes. This is true. They were convicted based on hearsay and circumstantial evidence, not to mention a healthy dose of christian (ugh) fundamentalism. The truth is out there, but the ignorant sit in their churches and ignore it because it is easier to do.

This a compact disc full of MUSIC, however, and that is the real point here. You can't get much better than this with Henry Rollins being joined by Black Flag alums like Chuck Dukowski and Keith Morris, as well as Hank Williams III (the best REAL country musician working today), Lemmy from Motorhead, Exene from X, Ryan Adams, Tom from Slayer, Nick from Mondo Generator, and plenty more. The music is all provided by Mother Superior, a terriffic caustic rock trio with plenty of CDs of their own out there. They are best known as the Rollins Band, mach II, of course. They became his backing band a few years ago, although this is no longer the case. Henry is set to reveal a new band soon. They tear it up here, and the guitar sound is nearly perfect since the Dan Armstrong guitar donated to the cause was used for the recording, getting close to that classic Greg Ginn sound.

Black Flag are one of the ten most important bands in the history of music, and these songs should not be missed. Check this disc out, then check out some of the original releases for a real lesson in rock and roll.

And check out the Paradise Lost films for a lesson in how easily the US court system can break down when it is allowed to be placed in the hands of ignorant rednecks who don't understand that church and state are required BY LAW to remain separate and distinct.

If the victims in this case were my family, I would want the real killer or killers to be found. I would not want to find the nearest scapegoat and ruin that person (or in this case persons) life. Punishing scapegoats is what the nazis did, isn't it?

I had never heard of the west memphis three case until this benifit CD came out. It wasn't until recently that I bought the CD, and ever since I've purchased it, I've been blown away by the intensity and quality. I think it's a testament to the still surviving power of music, and especially Black Flag style punk rock that so much talent has come together for such a controversial but noble cause. If you're a Black Flag, Rollins Band, Henry Rollins, etc., fan, buy this CD. If you're not a rock fan, at least check out the case, or at least how it's laid out by the CD insert. Without voices like Rollins, there will never be hope for justice in America.

    That this album's covers are mostly of Sixties and Seventies classics is its saving grace. Consistantly great song choices coupled with a few inspired vocal and instrumental performances make this collection rise above its somewhat "novelty" nature. Purely entertaining, and certainly not pretending to be anything it's not.

    I just can't get over the "hissing" in the background, it sounds like a recording from the 50's (monostereo). Based on the track listing, it seems like an excellent compilation. But the repetitive & similar reggae beats create a droning, monotonous album. Makes me prefer the original recordings.

    The general sound/feel of the album is great. However, the quality of the recording on several tracks (female vocalists in each case) seemed imbalanced -- phrases seemed to be missing. I don't know if I got a bad disk, or if the music just overpowered the words.

    Chinese Work Songs illustrates the strengths that Little Feat has maintained through thick and thin. With founding member Bill Payne and Paul Barrere (who signed up with 1973's classic Dixie Chicken) leading the charge, the seven-member ensemble demonstrates impressive instrumental prowess, in the process providing a reminder that the Grateful Dead weren't the only classic-rock group to have a mighty impact on modern jam bands. (They give a tip of the hat toward their descendants by adeptly covering Phish's "Sample in a Jar.") In general, the band has better luck with covers than originals, with the Band's "Rag Mama Rag" kicking things into gear with elbow-swinging gusto. Bands with three decades behind them can either settle into a stupor or hone their sound into something that's focused yet flexible. Fortunately for Little Feat followers, this gang falls into the latter bunch. --Steven Stolder

    I'm a great Little Feat lover, but I was disappointed by this one. The styles are formulaic, and I didn't feel that Shaun Murphy was really part of the band. Sorry but the title song is just annoying. I wanted to give my kids a taste of the truly creative rock that these folks made way back when - well this is not it.

    With the demise of the Greatful Dead, this album should propel Little Feat to the title of The Best Rock 'n' Roll Band. This album just plain kicks *** Well, I do wan this to be a family readable review, so you can put your own words there!

    The covers of "Rag Mama Rag" and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh..." are excellent and unmistakeably Little Feat. The group really kicks back to the "Dixie Chicken" days with "Just Another Sunday". Without realizing it, I found myself in my car with the windows down, stereo cranked to max while cruisin' down the highway. My vote for Best Cut on the disk.

    The title cut is a wonderful blend that is stamped "Made By Little Feat". Top quality al the way through. "Eula" was very reminiscent of "Fat man in a Bathtub". I could almost see Lowell George in the background.

    My old live Little Feat tape is long since worn out. If this CD were a tape, it too would be worn out is very short order!

    This Album is the best album I have ever own and I love it. Covering those songs were tight and right on the money.... The original songs where some of the best songs I've ever heard by any artist. I rate this album with 5 stars a complete CLASSIC!!!!

    Little Feat is still one of the sweetest bands to ever play a funky tune - with Lowell and without - a stellar group of musicians. How could anyone one of these major talents listen to the pitiful quality of this recording and say that it was ready for release? Nathaniel Kunkel mixed "Representing the Mambo", and obviously knows what he'sdoing. There is NO separation on any of the tracks - Feat sounds better in concert than on this CD. The entire effort borders on unlistenable, garage band quality. It's painful to say this because I love you guys - but for cryin'out loud - we've all been listening to music WAY too long to call this anywhere near a professional effort. It's like showin' up to dinner in a tuxedo with a pair of brown shoes.

    Little Feat's most recent release, Chinese Work Songs offers quite a tasty sampling of songs. The title track carefully employs some neat Chinese instrumental stylings mixed in within some raunchy driving rock n roll. The rhythms from song to song are all quite captivating as the band shows no limit in expanding their style. Probably the highlight of the record is Richie Hayward's charming vocal delivery on Gimee A Stone. Shaun Murphy is in ultra fine form on all her vocals lead or harmony.

    I refrain from giving this collection five stars because the songs are just not on the same level as Dixie Chicken, Sailing Shoes, Let It Roll, or the more recent Aint Had Enough Fun. The hooks on the seven originals just are not as captivating as Rock N Roll Everynight, Cadillac Hotel, Heaven's Where You Find It, and Romance Without Finance from the previously mentioned Aint Had Enough Fun disc. And Dixie Chicken's best tracks just blow this stuff away. Don't get me wrong, these songs are all pretty good. But its just not of the Legendary Satus that these guys/lady have done in the past. If you are a die hard feat fan, pcik this one up as you can't go wrong.

    In the early 1970's, Trojan released an LP entitled "From Bam Bam to Cherry O' Baby".It collected winners from the Jamaican Song Festival from that period.The songs were great and came from established singers such as Toots and the Maytals,Desmond Dekker,to name just two.This double disc set includes those 12 songs and adds about 42 more.That is a pretty good amount of songs.Consequently,this set includes all the winners and many other songs that did not win.(I can't call them losers because they are high quality songs).
    This collection is a gold mine of songs that normally do not appear on other collections.However,it does include some songs you may have if you follow Reggae from this period(late 60's to 1975).I did not let that bother me because the sound of these songs is much improved over other versions I have heard.The notes are fine supplying information for the winning songs.But I would have liked to have more information on the other songs.That is a minor gripe and I would not let that sway me.The discs are in chronological order,and I preferred Disc 1 to Disc 2.However,the second disc did contain some great songs by some popular artists.
    All in all this is a fine collection of reggae songs from the late 60's to mid 70's.The songs may not be overtly political,but they are fun. I highly recommend this set.

    "If you want peace, work for justice." Reggae musicians, as this collection shows, have always been conscious of this truth.

    This is a good collection, including real classics like I-Vibe's "Same Song" and Third World's "1865 (96 Degrees in the Shade)." Junior Reid's "One Blood," Dennis Brown's "Revolution," and Steel Pulse's "No More Weapons" are all must-haves.

    Luciano's version of "Eve of Destruction" is interesting, but it would have been much better if he'd chosen a better song to begin with. Don Carlos' version of "Blowin' in the Wind" suffers no such drawback.

    Reggae sometime-dabblers should know that this Tosh version of "Get Up, Stand Up" is different from the version you've heard on the Bob Marley "Legend" collection. Broaden your horizons.

    This album is packed with great songs from start to finish. Included are some classic tracks that no reggae lover should be without. 'One Blood' from Junior Reid is one of the best dancehall anthems. 'Putting Up Resistance' by Beres Hammond never gets old. 'Solidarity' is a great cut from Uhuru. I could go on and on. Also, I must mention the song 'Eve of Destruction' redone by Luciano and 'No More Weapons' off Steel Pulse's latest album featuring Damian "Jr Gong" Marley. Definitely a Five Star album all the way through.

    This is a good CD, but hardly "the ultimate collection." I say this because it consists of primarily recent recordings; 14 of 20 cuts in fact are 1987 or newer, with only 3 cuts from the 60's. Not that this is all bad; the latter day Dubliners are generally more polished than the older line-ups. The point is, if you are looking for stuff from the Luke Kelly/Ciaran Burke era, this isn't the collection you want.

    i'm 15 and listen to punk music and irish folk type stuff like the pogues, flogging molly, and the tossers. this and a clancy brothers/hammond CD were really my first true folk CD's. holy effin' hell it's awesome! this is definately my favorite album ever. i was very impressed. there are about 10 songs on there that i've heard other versions of by bands like those i mentioned above. every one of them is better by the dubliners. there's not a bad song, or even okay song on it. they're all good or great. the dubliners definately know how to make awesome music. if you like irish folk, buy it. if you don't, expand your music horizons and buy it. you won't be disappointed unless you have horrible taste in music. ; )
