Steve Gordon - Sequoia Records
"Deep Forest meets Kitaro - A refreshingly original sound. I give it 5 Stars!"
Product Description
Refresh your spirit on this inspiring musical voyage. The Ginkgo Tree, known as a symbol for hope and love, is the muse for the music of Ginkgo Garden, the internationally acclaimed music project of renowned film-music composer and keyboardist Eddy F. Mueller. Two years of studio crafting with some of Europe's finest musicians went into this hope-filled fifth release. By masterfully combining vintage guitar and keyboard sounds with exotic world instruments, electric guitar, piano, pulsing electronica, multi-layered vocals, Asiatic chants and deeply spiritual lyrics, the result is a uniquely uplifting modern ethno-pop groove. Great efforts were put into the fascinating vocal work on this record resulting in a gorgeous and uplifting vocal sound. One of the most popular artists on the acclaimed Buddha-Lounge series, Ginkgo Garden is now bringing their wonderfully genre-blending music to the US by popular demand.
"One of the most requested artists from Sequoia's popular "Buddha-Lounge" series, Ginkgo Garden has already had success overseas with its uplifting grooves. This exciting world beat project, from renowned German producer Eddy F. Mueller, offers a unique blend of driving rhythms, spacious synthesizers, guitar (both acoustic and electric) and richly layered vocals. Imagine blending Asian ambiance with the ethnic sensibilities of Deep Forest. Amp up the pop/rock elements, throw in some electric guitars and you'll start to get an idea of what Ginkgo Garden's very original, genre-bending sound is like. This is definitely an album to toss in the CD player next time you're looking for something fun and funky." ~ Music Design In Review

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The Twelve Gifts of Birth - Music.......2006-03-01
I have given numerous copies of the book as a gift to all my friends who are first-time grandmothers to give to their new grandchid and was unaware of the music that now can accompany the book. I love it! Such wonderful positive messages and great sing along - not only for children, but for adults too. I bought one CD for my grandchildren and then ordered five more for gifts for adults and children. If everyone grew up listening to these messages how wonderful it would be!
Great Music for Adults, Too!!!.......2004-11-25
This CD is wonderful. There is such a great mixture of styles and everyone can enjoy it! I actually cried because it was so beautiful...and I'm not a mushy kind of gal!! It's a must-have no matter if you have/work with children or not.
Music for everyone!.......2004-10-30
This CD, although especially good for children, is music for everyone to enjoy. The themes in the music remind us to be positive and kind people in a busy, hectic world. This CD deserves more attention!!!
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2004-09-29
This CD will entertain and stimulate you and your child for years to come. The melodies are captivating, and the rhythms are so enticing they will get your feet tapping and your hands clapping. The Twelve Gifts of Birth is a wonderful CD for all ages!
Beautiful Music.......2004-09-14
As a music educator, I highly recommend this CD and the book that it is based on. The music is powerful and inspirational, and it is easy for youth and adults to sing along together. It would be wonderful to have more quality music CD's such as this one...to replace the tired Raffi and other pop culture children's music icons.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05
This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.
The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.
Dan Schutte's Here I Am, Lord.......2001-01-08
I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05
After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

King's X lie somewhere between progressive rock and hard rock, and nowhere is that more evident than on this album. They're at their best when rocking out, as on the fast, acrobatic "Moanjam," which occasionally reminds one of Queen's "Headlong." With the slower, delicate "Six Broken Soldiers," they veer more toward Pink Floyd territory; "Fine Art of Friendship" has a fine midtempo groove and some excellent riffs. King's X enjoy harmonizing, as just about every song includes backing vocals, or else two or more of the band members share the lead. The only problem here is that they overdo it, making what could be a series of special moments into just another effect. This, coupled with overly slick production, prevents Faith Hope Love from being a great album. However, it is good, with some fine moments that help make up for its shortcomings. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
MUSIC, SWEET MUSIC! Like being at a jam session........2007-05-10
I have a theory; hear me out.
Classic rock, the real stuff, you know before 1980 and the hair bands, had a different feel, a different texture, a different air. People continue to label anything older than 20 years as classic rock, but that really isn't fair. Like Motown, classic rock was the good old rock & roll of the 60's and 70's.
Now, to get to my point. This album is more classic rock than any other I have heard since the end of real classic rock. The reason? Almost every track is at least 4 minutes long, with huge guitar and bass solos and music that is undeterred by vocals. Think about it. Classic rock had a lot of music and a lot less to say.
This album is like that. Songs like "Moanjam", "Faith, Hope, Love", "We Are Finding Who We Are", "It's Love", "Fine Art of Friendship", "Talk To You" and "We Were Born To Be Love", all have long vocal pauses where the guys just play; like I say in my review title, it's like being at a jam session in Doug, Ty or Jerry's garage. It's just good music.
Not every song on the album is great, but the majority are. All those listed above are standouts as well as "Mr. Wilson", "I Can't Help It", "Everywhere I Go", and "I'll Never Get Tired Of You".
The only low points on the album are: "Six Broken Soldiers" which is a bit odd and, I have to admit I don't understand where they were going with this one; and "Legal Kill" which I understand is an anti-abortion song and is probably important to them, but is just kind of a downer that really never does anything to me personally.
Anyway. This album tends to get panned by even the King's X faithful and that is my theory on why. I love classic rock, you know, real classic rock, and I love this album.
A Terrific Hard Rocking Christian tinged album.......2006-12-16
King's X would later repudiate the Christian label, but at this point in their career, their songs were definitely being influenced by a higher power, both musically and lyrically. "We are Finding Who We Are" is a great song of self-discovery," the closing acoustic ballad "Legal Kill" is the best anti-abortion song ever recorded by anyone, and "Mr. Wilson" is a beautiful example of ELO influenced pop-rock. "Moanjam: functions as a good example of power praise rock - "I sing this song because of You - You're the story - It's You!"
But this review would be incomplete without mentioning the band's Beatlesque sounding vocal harmonies, as evidenced on "It's Love" and "I Can't Help," and the title track, where the band proclaims "I believe that He is alive!"
Get this album if you can find it, it rocks!
The 90's begins, and this was just brilliant ..........2006-06-12
This is the third album from King's X following "Out of the silent planet" (1988) and "Gretchen goes to Nebraska" (1989).
For me Kings X were the most original band in the late 80's / early 90's. This and "Gretchen" are real classics. From the very start the guitar and bass riffs are bold and melodic and the vocals (both lead and backing) are just sheer brilliance.
The opening track ("We are finding who we are") is melodic hard rock at it's best with great changes in timing and complex arrangements of instruments and vocals. From there it just gets better, in fact the opening 5 tracks offer as much diversity and musicianship that it just reminds me 16 years on how unbelievable it all sounded. Certainly `We are finding...", and "It's Love" were catchy enough to be listened to a larger radio audience and the beauty in "Fine Art of Friendship" and "Mr Wilson" showcased a band capable of creating new and diverse soundscapes that for me at the time were real "Wow" factors. "Moanjam" is a real out and out rocker, followed by a real highlight "Six Broken Soldiers" where again the vocal arrangements and overall musicianship have to be heard to be believed. The 9 minute plus "Faith, Hope Love" is yet another highlight, the band producing a real tension filled epic.
Overall I look back at the early 90's and whilst I enjoyed the bulk of Living Color's "Vivid" album from 1988, a fair chunk of Faith No More's "Epic" release from 1990, most of Mother Lovebone, Temple of the Dog, and subsequently Pearl Jam's first two releases ("10" 1991 and V's 1993), it is this album and "Gretchen" that I return to more often than anything else from this time period.
Whilst Genesis and Rush were "my bands" of the 70's and early 80's (plus the bulk of Jethro Tull and 70's Kansas) and Marillion (plus Simple Minds, Waterboys, Big Country and U2) took most of my attention in the mid 80's, it is Kings X (and a couple of years later Dream Theater) that sums up my memories of the early 90's best of all. "Faith, Hope, Love" I come back to many times and it's always a refreshing listen, just so original, complex, melodic, passionate and.... those vocal harmonies.... tremendous.
I certainly enjoy this album as much today as I did back in 1990, I hope that if you do decide to get it that you enjoy it as well, it's superb.
X-tremely good........2006-05-17
This is a disc I actually only got recently because I remembered liking the song "It's Love" in 1990. It's indeed a catchy track, and the rest here holds up for the most part. I tend to think of this band as metal, but they're really more just hard rock. I'm sure many would disagree, but alot of these songs remind me of both Living Colour and Extreme. I like those bands myself. Other stand-out songs for me are "I'll Never Get Tired Of You", "Mr. Wilson", "Six Broken Soldiers", and "I Can't Help It". The rest is still decent. Overall if you like melodic hard rock, this is well worth the price, especially used.
"We Were Born to Be Played on 'Late Show with David Letterman'".......2006-04-10
No accounting for the taste of the benighted listener who calls "We Were Born to Be Loved" an "unmemorable" track...considering it's probably the most hard-hitting, rhythmically intricate, and certainly funkiest tune in the entire King's X canon! The second-half breakdown of the song is awe-inspiringly ass-kicking - and clearly has a big fan in Paul Shaffer, who has been playing it on "Late Show with David Letterman" - as a lead-out to commercial breaks - for quite a few years now. So there. Take it to the bridge, y'all! Long live King's X!

Customer Reviews:
Liked it alot!.......2007-05-26
Really enjoyed this CD! Have to agree with earlier review - this is a "peaceful, relaxing solo piano" CD. Look forward to hearing more from him. My favorite was "Water is Wide".
Perfectly Serene.......2006-02-18
We absolutely love this CD! If you like peaceful, easy, relaxing yet inspiring music, you'll love it too.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-06-26
Keith Martinson's debut CD is comprised of fourteen piano solos, eight of which are original compositions. The other six pieces are a mix of traditional hymns, folk songs, and Christian worship music. Calling his music "easy listening" rather than "new age" or one of the other general categories of instrumental music, this CD is often used as background music in home and business settings. Very pleasing to listen to, there are no rough edges or surprises, but this is music intended to soothe and inspire rather than to amuse or dazzle. The original compositions tend to be very gentle and somewhat hymn-like - direct and melodic.
The cover pieces include "The Water Is Wide," "Day By Day," and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." The CD opens with "Friend," a warm and contented piece that sets the tone for the rest of the recording. "By the Grace of God" was composed for Martinson's wedding, and has a strong sense of optimism and love - quite a beautiful piece. "Every Blessing" is full of sparkle and joyous enthusiasm, but also includes reflective moments - I like this one a lot! I also really like "Water's Edge," which is serene and peaceful. A calming grace and a feeling of peaceful introspection make this piece seem especially personal. "Path of Peace" was composed for Martinson's son's baptism - innocent and optimistic, the music is full of warmth and love. "You Are My Dream" is a beautiful love song, again optimistic and tender.
"Faith, Hope, and Love" is a very promising debut. If you are looking for peaceful, relaxing solo piano music with a very strong spiritual side, you can't go wrong with this one.

Best Christian Music.......2005-05-15
I grew up listening to Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart. I remember listening to the album "Crank it Up" when I was four years-old. Soon after "Faith, Hope, & Love" followed. Naturally, I loved this album, too. The lyrics and Mylon's voice are amazing, and the meaning behind the music is pure. This is just pure Christian music to uplift you and keep you in the right mindset. This is music the entire family can enjoy. The music on this album (unlike "Crank it Up") is timeless. On some of the previous Mylon Lefevre CD's the music sounds a little dated now, but the tracks are still as great as ever!

Inspiring voice, uninspired arrangements.......2005-03-03
Glen is in great voice here and largely discards the country nasal twang that has tarnished his more recent works. This album is a bit of a throw back to his "pop" voice of "The Last Time I Saw Her" album era, which sounds more natural and pleasing to the ear. Campbell albums with new material are few and far between. He's an awesome singer and guitarist but has never been able to find a producer of the caliber of Al DeLory to help him select material that will get air play and sell albums. It would be interesting to team him up with the likes of Phil Ramone to do a twin pop-country album with the same songs in two arrangements, like Shania Twain's "Up!" albums. Glen's reading of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is the best I've ever heard despite the bland arrangement that disappoints on this track, as well as the rest of the album. This album needed some interesting string counterpoints to give it some pep. The recording itself is crystal clean and Glen's perfect voice is presented without any artificial reinforcement. Todd Rungren's "Love Is The Answer," originally covered by pop duo England Dan & John Ford Coley in the late 70s, is probably the most commercial track, but the love song is a curious contrast to the more traditional -- one might even say, hard core -- Bible hymns like "The Old Rugged Cross."
