An Outstanding Vocal Performance.......2000-05-01 This ranks as one of the very best recordings of French 'melodies' that I have yet heard. Unlike most other singers, Gens gives the words drama and meaning. Too many singers perform these works in a detached 'artistic' manner that often makes them all sound almost alike. I say this not to belittle Gens' voice (which is superb), but to indicate that this disk will take you beyond the 'standard' interpretations of these works. I had a chance to compare one of the melodies with another recent recording by Schafer, another singer whom I respect Both were being featured in a local record store. It was hard to realize they were actually singing the same piece. I recently saw Gens perform much of the same program at a recital in NYC. This was the best recital I had heard in a very long time (I go to many). The disk is almost as good. It suffers a bit from a very unnatural recorded sound: the microphone is much too close to the singer and the piano is much too forward. Also the accompaniest in NYC was clearly better. Nevertheless, it would be hard to find a better recorded performance. The more I listen to the disk, the less I notice these drawbacks. The choice of repetoire is also well done. I particularly liked the Debussy 'Trois chansons de Bilitis.' She ends with 'Les chemins de l'amour' which Poulenc wrote for Jean Anouilh's play 'Leaocadia'. This has become very popular outside the normal recital circuit. If you get only one disk of French melodies, this is the one to get. The recital's centerpiece is Fauré's La Chanson d'Eve, a cycle of 10 exquisitely fashioned songs whose delicate subtlety and carefully weighed balance between light and shade are beautifully realized by Upshaw and her excellent accompanist, Gilbert Kalish, whose rippling piano in "Eau vivante" captivates. The pair also excel in the spare, mysterious "Crépuscule" (Twilight). Threaded throughout the disc are five songs by Olivier Messiaen, whose blending of spiritual faith and sensuous feeling often reaches ecstatic heights, as in the wildly virtuosic coloratura singing and keyboard demands of "Prière exaucée" (A Prayer Granted). If you want more of the same there is double CD called "The Vogue Years" covering her 1962-67 period brilliantly. Pleasant 60s French pop.......2003-11-29 Ah these are the sort of songs you'll probably hear at some holiday hotel in France. You can't help but hum along to the tune because you wouldn't really know what the lyrics are. At least that's the feeling I get from them. But seriously, these songs are beautiful in there simplicity and while 22 songs might stretch some people's patience - they are all welcome additions. I don't want to seem like a biased fan because this is the only CD I have of Francoise Hardy but I would be interested in getting some of her records. I just a need a few more records before I get a good opinion. This, as it is, is a good start for anyone interested in French pop from the 60s. Only thing I would have wished for is that they didn't include English versions of songs that were sung here in French. Sure they're still nice but I prefer the sensuality of the French language This is a great album! Well worth it!.......1999-09-24 Françoise Hardy has to be one of the coolest singers around! What is further impressive is that she has been doing it for over 35 years. "Partir quand meme" has to be one of the prettiest recordings ever! The two arias from Faust are a little low for him but he sings them with great musicality. The aria from Mireille which is a rarity is sung brilliantly. Mr. Van Dam gets up to those high notes so easily. This collection mostly contains French Repertoire which was ideal for his voice. Several of the arias are rarely performed and I think should be performed more often. The few German selections are very effective as well. I think he was one of the finest Brahms Requiem soloists of all time. Mr. Van Dam is still singing well at age 65. I think he is one of the finest singers and musicians because everything he sings means something to him internally. That is something that defines a great artist for me. I highly recommend this collection because it is a tool for singers to learn how to pronounce French properly. The diction is so clear that you can practically write it down. Of course, she does have a rather controvertial aspect to her voice that many listeners may object to, As a classic french coloratura, her vibrato is VERY fast, fluttering tremulously at all times but never getting in the way of her pitch. Still, her high notes are exceptional (the second CD ends with a glorious high A flat) and the fresh, girlish beauty of her tone is unsurpassed even today (my apologies to Natalie Dessay). Be sure not to miss her Bell Song, by FAR the best I have ever heard! Her voice has a crystaline quality that is PERFECT for that particular aria. Her Doll Song is rather weak, but her mad scene from Hamlet MORE than makes up for it (can we say eight seconds of beautiful high F harp?!!). The second CD offers Mady in a more matura phase of her life, singing sensuously in more traditional art songs before going on to challenging operetta arias. And you won't want to miss the violin, viola, cello, soprano quartet that opens the CD!!! Let's just say you're in for a surprise... this CD is a must-have! To have the complete collection gathered on disc is a treat, and with artists like these, the performances are about as good as you could expect this side of the pearly gates. Ann Murray and Felicity Lott need no introduction for their celestial singing of this repertoire. The American baritone Chris Pedro Trakas is less well-known, but he comes with a clutch of top prizes and, more to the point, a beautifully sensitive voice, which he uses to great effect here. Underpinning everything is accompanist Graham Johnson, whose playing is always just so right, whatever area of the song repertoire he takes on, and who provides (uncredited) a must-read essay on Chausson that really engages with the music. Soprano Geraldine McGreevy is a welcome addition in two duets, as is the Chilingirian Quartet, accompanying Ann Murray in the final number, "Chanson perpétuelle." If a reason for a reassessment of Chausson's role as a writer of mélodie is needed, this marvelous set is overwhelmingly it. --Keith Clarke Customer Reviews: A SUPERB SET..........2007-04-30 . 5-stars just for being in print. A rare and superb set; ignore the 1-star review. . a spectacular record.......2003-10-10 Truly a great recording - sung by outstanding artists, especially Felicity Lott, and accompanied by Graham Johnson in his best form..... The music is truly glorious and the recording is a revelation with many beautiful nuances. A total joy!!! Fascinating rep, rancid singing.......2003-06-10 I picked this CD up because I love the melodie in general and Chausson in particular. What a pity that the performances can't hold a candle to the composer's inspiration. Felicity Lott is her usual shrill self, Ann Murray is even more wobbly and out-of-line than usual, Chris Trakas has no lower range and a pinched top, and Geraldine McGreevy sings as if she had a beautiful voice, which she most emphatically does not. All of these artists are woefully out of tune, which sits particularly unpleasantly on the ear in the chromatic universe of Chausson. As for Graham Johnson, the less said the better. There are those who think he is a fine accompanist and pianist. Fine. Let them think so. They must be deaf or have short memories. If one wants to hear great performances of French rep, turn to young Souzay, with Jacqueline Bonneau on a deleted Decca CD. This is rarified music, but these people have not the technique to do it justice.
