4 out of 5 stars Bold, ambitious attempt that hits some marks, misses others.......2002-12-06

This is an engaging and unusual integration of Nakai's flute-playing talent with an orchestral accompaniment, creating a romantic, sweeping, and contemplative score that sounds like a motion picture soundtrack in many instances. Nakai's command of the flute never wavers, but sometimes competes, rather than synchronizes with the full-bodied strings that interject themselves almost randomly throughout every piece. When the two mediums cooperate the result is moving and lyrical. One can almost visualize scenes of beauty, mourning, and determination that are the embodiment of Native American existence. But in some places, the music meanders between the two forms creating a neutral, unfocused, and occasionally dispassionate mood.

I applaud Nakai's innovation and experimentation, but I think his strongest work with Western classical music forms is still best demonstrated in his collaborations with pianist Peter Kater, such as "Migrations". Oddly enough, Kater's work with Nakai is not mentioned in the liner notes.

4 out of 5 stars Music to Contemplate By.......2002-12-01

I had never heard any of Nakai's work before buying this CD, so I came to it with no idea of what to expect. The first word that comes to my mind when I play it is "soothing." That describes the first three tracks without need of another word. With the fourth, soft sweeping strings join Nakai's plaintive flute for a feel best described as "floating" or "drifting." The fifth is sweetly mournful. The sixth brings muted brass into play. In the seventh there are moments both majestic and plaintive. And so it goes. This is quiet, thoughtful music, the kind you might play while reading some favorite old "gentle" book or practising your deep breathing. Although I generally prefer more powerful sounds from my stereo, this one is an enjoyable change of pace, and full of Native mysticism.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, eclectic and very "cerebral" music.......1999-07-08

I bought this CD directly from Peter himself after he played a mini-concert in his hometown, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The artist is as brilliant as his music. Peter is very down-to-earth, and a very diverse audience thoroughly enjoyed his music at the concert. I highly recommend it for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars I like the good mix of instruments which accentuate flute.......1998-07-04

The CD is a good mix of differenct types of music from Scarborough Fair to interpretive Native American. There are diffent types of flutes used to produce the CD, so the variety and versatility of sound add to the listening "feast". I find it very enjoyable listening while working or relaxing. Highly recommended for flute music lovers.

3 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-06-22

Although the album sleeve says that this release is from 1987, it was not actually released until 1991. For fans, it was the absolute LAST chance to hear music from TD while Chris Franke was still a part of this great band.

The music itself is quite good, but there are 1 or 2 tracks that are somewhat fogettable. The final track was actually written by Edgar's son Jerome and is probably one of the best tracks on the album.

All in all, it is a very good album, it's just not great, at least not great for a TD album. It is worth a listen every now and then, though.

2 out of 5 stars Music to soothe the mind.......2007-01-12

In our home we listen to Country-Western, Classic Rock, Oldies and more. On Sunday mornings, sitting on the patio, enjoying our coffee and each other, we listen to this CD. We love Tangerine Dream's work and, living in such close proximity to The Canyon, we relate to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic and kinematic stylish soundtrack.......2002-01-04

Composed in the spring of 1987, "Canyon Dreams" was available only via the VHS video until 1991, when finally Miramar decided to publish it on CD. The digital release does not include the introduction track, a short but interesting piece of music. What we get instead, is a bonus track, composed and performed by Jerome Froese, a regular member of the band in 1991. It's absolutely divergent from the musical style, spirit and quality of the material, and thus I can't possibly see the reason for its inclusion. Long ago I learned to stop my CD player right when the proper soundtrack is finished.

The core of this album consists of 7 compositions, to which the movie sequences were tailored, with some repetitions on the part of the former. The DVD release is only slightly longer than the soundtrack. The idea behind the production was to synchronize the motion picture with the musical landscape, and should you ever watch the DVD, which I heartily recommend, you will see that the synchronization is perfect, scenes were cut exactly according to the kinematic tempo of Tangerine Dream compositions, and sometimes one can hardly believe how good that effect was, as is for instance the case with Canyon Carver. Since I had owned "Canyon Dreams" long before it was properly issued on CD, I will always associate the music with the picture. Not a bad idea, anyway, and if you are not an obsessive fan of Tangerine Dream - like yours truly - you might be much better off if you got two at the price of one. Buying this inexpensive DVD you can admire the synchronized images, both musical and visual.

The album begins with 'Shadow Flyer', a dynamic, syncopated composition in which synthesizer riffs change tempo again and again, with idiosyncratic structure overwhelming the listener. It's not easy listening, by no means it is indeed, and you will be delighted to see the band innovating once again, after so many years. In a sense, 'Shadow Flyer' is a comeback to the golden times of the late seventies, and albums like "Cyclone" and "Force Majeure". After your tastes are sharpened after this grand intro, you are treated to the two-piece 'Canyon Carver', a powerful track, which in turn is rather simplistic. Now notes fly whirling in the air much like water drops oscillating wildly, albeit silently on the edge of the small waterfall, a tiny barrier in the flow of the canyon river. Suddenly the suspense increases, and you realize that something is going to happen, and indeed it does, for we are going to rock now. We approach the series of wild waterfalls, and with your mouth slightly agape, you gain momentum in perfect harmony with the water and the sound track, which accelerates and then settles in a steady beat of an electronic rock theme, one of the best Tangerine Dream ever created.

Then as one flies over the Canyon in sudden gasps of the wind, we enjoy the thrill of 'Water's Gift', a moody tune of delicate fading spasms, into which the vibrating sequencer background is intertwined. Once again we are treated to the electronic flute, something which we grew to love ever since "Tangram" of 1980. With the advent of the fourth track, 'Canyon Voices', the so-far unheard members of the band, Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger, come into play (in the compositional sense). A year later these two musicians produced another soundtrack, "Miracle Mile", a kind of watered-down version of "Canyon Dreams", and 'Canyon Voices' track in particular.

We enter the second half of the recording with 'Sudden Revelation', a tear-jerking electronic ballad, which might just as well serve as a grand finale of any romance, or perhaps as an ideal background for an intellectual literary romance, if the latter was adapted to silver screen. Fortunately, this mood does not propagate to the following tune, 'A Matter of Time', the longest one on the disc (almost 9 minutes). It's a small suite in miniature, in fact an essence of this soundtrack, where all aforementioned elements are blended into the grand multithreaded theme. It's timeless, and it's beautiful.

The album ends with 'Purple Nightfall', a tune which is slightly reminiscent of their previous soundtrack, "Shy People". It's not as good as the rest of the album, but then, the album is stellar, of very high quality in every respect, and thus we can live with 'Purple Nightfall'. Remember though to eject your player before the bonus Froese junior track spoils your pleasure, breaking the mood of this beautiful CD. If only I could delete it from CD!

3 out of 5 stars A slick portrayal of some aspects of the Grand Canyon.......2000-05-25

This 1987 album presents the music from the Miramar video production of the same name. In addition to the 7 tracks from the video, (6 video chapters, plus end credit music) the CD contains a couple of additional tracks and provides about 9 minutes more music than the video. The opening track ('Shadow Flyer') is shorter on the CD, and is slightly different, having greater musical integrity and without the rather clumsy cueing overdubs present on the video.

In keeping with the video images, the music on this disc is all very gentle and relaxing and it hardly counts amongst the band's greatest accomplishments. The two bonus tracks by Jerome Froese are very much in the same vein as and fit in superbly with the rest of the material. These, together with the improvements to 'Shadow Flyer' make the CD worth having, even if you already have the DVD. And worth having instead of it, if you don't want both!

(For a fuller review of this CD, check out its entry on the amazon.co.uk site; I have also reviewed the DVD from which this soundtrack is taken in the DVD section of amazon.com.)

4 out of 5 stars Some Bland Moments, but mostly Excellent.......1999-02-07

This is the soundtrack to a short video: imagine Koyaanisqatsi with TD instead of Philip Glass, and the Grand Canyon, instead of the panoply of life in the USA: and less deep-meaning, more pure aesthetics. The music and pictures are just superb together, but the music does stand alone pretty well. If "Sudden Revelation" doesn't hit your "Ooh-Yeah!" button, then get somebody to bury you before the neighbours start complaining about the smell.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album.......2006-11-10

"Dreams from the Grandfather," by Robert Tree Cody, would be a wonderful addition to the library of anyone who appreciates Native American music. I have many Native American CD's, and this one instantly became one of my favorites. It is beautiful, peaceful, and moving music, utilizing both the Native American flute and Mr. Cody's deep, resonant voice. It can transport you to a feeling of another place and time, and easily holds it's own ground against the likes of R. Carlos Nakai. I would recommend it to anyone. You won't regret your purchase, and, like me, you'll probably be looking for more of Cody's music.

3 out of 5 stars I like it better than White Buffalo.......2005-08-23

My first Robert Tree Cody album was a collaboration with Hovia Edwards, "Reflections", that was great so I decided to get "White Buffalo" based on that and the favorable reviews here at Amazon. White Buffalo had too much synthesizer stuff in it for my tastes, "Grandfather " is almost entirely cedar flute with just a little drum work(on #11)
6 out of 11 selections have some chanting or singing accompanying the music, it didn't sound like words but vocalizations to me on most of them. #8 Lakota Lullaby did seem worded and #11 Stomp Dance had even more of a word rather than chant sound. I like an authentic sounding American Indian music album but this one is at a low end for me, Hovia Edwards is better, more life to her music maybe.

5 out of 5 stars good buy!.......2004-03-15

this album is a wonderful duet of voice and flute, very well syncronized,i would highly suggest this title for anyone who likes NAF music and vocals,i am very pleased with it....

5 out of 5 stars The Best Native Song in my collection.......2003-12-05

Absolutely the best Native Indian song in my collection. I listen to this every day for years and going on strong. Robert Tree Cody is a true spiritual messenger. This is a MUST have CD if you are into Native Indian Spiritualism.

5 out of 5 stars I hear Granfather Sun.......2001-11-19

This CD reflects the way flute music should be played. Voice, drum, flute. I first heard about this artist through a wonderful flute maker by the name of Danny Biggay. Recently, I have bought several flute CD's. They all overshadow the flute. Not so in this CD. Like someone else, this CD takes me back to my native past. I can hear grandfather talking to me as I listen to Robert play his flute in the woods around my house.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Selection.......2005-12-21

As a fan of the cedar flute and Native American music, I happened upon this gem whilst looking for an enjoyable Christmas CD that was relaxing and made me appreciate the songs again. What I love the most about this CD is, once again, R. Carlos Nakai's stunning ability to perform the music in such a way that takes familiar sounds and transforms them into something recognizable but very refreshing. This is definitely a CD to buy and because of the change of the sound, it will be appealing throughout the year. Definitely a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic interpertations of the holiday season..........2004-12-10

I received this wonderful cd over 10 years ago as a Christmas
gift at work and its been part of my Christmas music for the end of the year
holidays. Beautiful, haunting music created by Carlos Nakai and
William Eaton with the theme of introspection and renewal at
its core. Something about this music, I guess the southwestern
desert landscapes and the open space created in the music just
make this a classic. Timeless melodies and familar songs created
by master musicans featuring flute, guitar, lyre and harp guitar. Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, contemplative music for the Christmas season.......2001-11-12

I found out about this CD in a recent catalogue that I received in the mail. I am a longtime fan of R. Carlos Nakai and was thrilled to see that he had released a CD of traditional Christmas carols reinterpreted for cedar flute and guitar.

Some of the songs are more improvisational than others and may not be to everyone's taste if you're expecting a more traditional collection of holiday songs and carols, but all are strikingly beautiful and reflective with a recognizable melody. I love the Navajo chorus on "Silent Night"--it's worth buying the CD just for this inspiring new version of a beloved song.

The album evokes the some of the same sense of wonder and contemplation as Loreena McKennitt's Christmas album "To Drive the Cold Winter Away." Hearing the Native American cedar flute carrying the melody and accompaniment was a very pleasant surprise. The cedar flute is hauntingly beautiful and mysterious, much like the holiday season itself.

I am not familiar with William Eaton, but his guitar playing is superb, gentle and radiant, shimmering like the lights on a Christmas tree. It is a perfect compliment to the flutework of R. Carlos Nakai.

"Winter Dreams" is among my most cherished Christmas albums but it is appropriate year-round as it is a deeply spiritual and beautiful CD. It captures the magic of the first snowfall, the winter silence and crisp air, peace and comfort. Buy this for yourself if you seek a little wonder, contemplation, and peace in your holiday season. Happy Holidays.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2000-12-14

This is one of the most exquisite collections of Christmas music I have ever heard. It will take you on a magical, winter-y, spiritual journey.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2000-12-09

This is my favorite Holiday music by far. Carlos Nakai demonstrates his genius with wonderful adaptations of Christmas classics. I've been a fan of Nakai/Eaton for a long time and this is their best effort yet. Absolutely beautiful. Buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing release from a previously unknown band!.......2005-12-24

I never heard of this band until somehow linked to this page on Amazon, and man am I ecstatic or what! Norther are an amazing band. The greatest strength of this band lies in the combination of its sick and I mean SICK lead guitar melodies intertwined with the insane keyboard licks. Children of Bodom? I wouldn't actually UNDERRATE this band by comparing them to COB. I'd say more like Finland's version of Dark Tranquillity, with less rock/death/big riffs and more black atmosphere. The songwriting here is magnificant as is the musicianship. The only thing that can be improved upon is the production, which seems inferior to Amorphis and Sentenced, two big Finnish metal bands.

5 out of 5 for the pure fact that I had never heard of this band before, and I have now, and am completely BLOWN AWAY.

Two words: GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY worth the extra bucks.......2005-02-13

Norther's debut, 'Dreams of Endless War,' was released in 2002. Ultimately, the look of this band might make you look at them like they're a Children of Bodom clone. This is not so. Though both bands are from Finland, both are melodic death crews, and both are quintets made up in the same way (singer/guitarist, guitarist, bassist, keyboard vrituoso, drummer), they each have peronsalities reflected in their sounds that make them unique. Both bands really can play, which is certainly not something you see in a majority of the younger metal bands out there today. I must say, the addition of the cover of classic hair metal anthem "The Final Countdown" (originally done by Europe) adds an interesting touch to an already teriffic melodic death CD. COB fans, rejoice, this is not a clone, it is merely a close cousin, and an equally talented one at that.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2004-05-30

Man I was blown away. The song Final Countdown will stay in your head all day, amazing keyboards on this cd. if you are a fan of Children of Bodom or Kreator, or even Eternal Tears of Sorrow, you should give these guys a try, I did, and I was NOT dissappointed, what a great cd.

5 out of 5 stars Handsome Authentic Good Moodsetter.......2007-04-12

An intimate native experiential creation-- I wouldn't say I sit and absolutely listen to it, a single slowish/quiescent flute of another culture, at least not much yet, but driving on a solitary foothill road the other night, it was rightly special. I stopped to take some photos of a sheered-off tree with all these images, angel- one bug-like with starry antennae, also mysteriously modern Incans (with those semi-bucketish/brimmed hats they wear sort of shaped like our old folks' ones), North and Central America (no South?), and fairy, etc in its bark. Then I returned and switched the music back on and a great half-Moon rose awesomely from behind a distant Sierra ridge! This cd has assisted several such times at home and driving. It is an excellent production-- Carlos Nakai's that I recently tried frayed my ears with its amp and effect, etc but this is almost like listening to a seashell, gentle on ears wise. It is personally and culturally beautiful in naming and art (not much lit or art inside though which bothers me some but likely due to costs)- and coinciding perhaps with the minimal and careful feelings but without being too. There is a sense of sharing older young adult male ingrained wisdom, dreams, and respect. Please don't get me wrong. Nakai's may have a more stop and listen, great-sensed matured entertainment obviously and its own great spirituality but this touches in meeting it and being with its puerer-ness, and greater innocence(?) Maybe it's because Nakai originates in desert and his myths are more widely known, but his seems more general and darker. (I wish I could listen to it enough to understand better though.) Anthony's is felt-good mysterious and sacred personal yet in a way that can be comfortably shared, if with respect. At the right times, it has been perfect calming- and for my muse and mood intro and healthy, humble, confident and brave sustain. I don't really know it though. What is the butterflies' personal and other significance to him etc.? They have mattered to me greatly though in sync with listening to this and other aspects of my recent spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Fine recording of music for this combination.......2000-09-21

Boyd and Goluses present a varied program of music involving their combination of flute and guitar. To this reviewer, the selections which stand out are Joan Tower's duo "Snow Dreams" and Augusta Read Thomas's double concerto "Eclipse Musings." For those who especially enjoy the flute and guitar combination, this recording is a "must have." For others who think they might enjoy these blending sonorities, these are some excellent modern works with which to explore this combination.
