Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.
" one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06
This collection of four compact discs...are worth their weight in GOLD! Barry creates visual moods for each film he scores...romantic, sentimental, action, adventure, suspense and mystery...the list could go on. Strings, brass and lush-velvet arrangements overlay each cue in his distinctive style of legendary scoring...we have ~ "John Barry:The Collection", Silva Screen's release traces 40 years of film music, featuring "The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra" ~ conducted by Mr. Nic Raine (outstanding)..."Crouch End Festival Chorus" ~ David Temple, Choir Master...perform 56 selections, over four hours of symphonic suites with a full orchestra sound...all individually wrapped-up into one neat package...just the way "film-score-buffs" like 'em!
Must ask the following to take a bow ~ James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), always in their pitching, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Nic Raine (conductor, arranger, orchestrator & associate producer), a tremen!dous asset to every project he undertakes...and the man who made it all possible...a legendary icon always leading the way in film scoring ~ JOHN BARRY!
Total Time: 258:76 on 56 Tracks ~ SSD-1128 ~ (2001)
You might try other albums from Silva Screen, all worthy of a good listen ~ "The Essential James Bond" (SSD-1034)..."Bond:Back In Action" (SSD-1100)..."Bond:Back In Action 2" (SSD-1119)..."Zulu" (SSD-1095)..."Raise The Titanic" (SSD-1102)..."Walkabout" (SSD-1120)...check out my reviews on amazon.com/music.

Customer Reviews:
Who's the intended audience?.......2001-12-29
I have mixed feelings about this album. In some ways, it seems like a bit of a rip-off for Mannheim Steamroller fans since it only offers one new Steamroller track (The Goodwill Games Theme), and it's not a particularly good piece of music anyway. Technically, there is another new piece, The Fanfare, but being that it's only about a minute long and is quite unremarkable, we'll just ignore that one. To make matters worse, Chip Davis took "Dancing Flames" from Fresh Aire 4 and rearranged it, making it sound thin and lifeless, which is really a shame since Dancing Flames had long been one of my favorite Steamroller pieces.
On the plus side, there are some really good, older, Steamroller tracks here, such as "Chakra 3" and "Fugue," and some of the Russian classical music is quite good.
If you're a Steamroller fan, skip it. If you're a fan of Russian Classical music, you might enjoy it, but then you might be irritated by the inclusion of the Steamroller tracks (which, in juxtaposition to the grandiose classical pieces, seem pretty hokey.) Seems like this is a no-win situation.
Good Russian music CD.......2001-10-19
The Russian folk songs are cool, well done.
The techno-instrumental modern improvisations
are schlock. Sorry, I just can't get in to
Mannheim Steamroller, no matter how hard I try.
The liner notes in Russian and English were a nice
touch.
"Russian classical & folk music via Mannheim Steamroller".......2001-01-15
Opening for this one of a kind album - "To Russia With Love", is the American melody juxtaposed to a Russian melody, only the leader of Mannheim Steamroller - Chip Davis could have pulled this off. This "festival like" atmosphere is the multi-national spirit sharing music from the past to present.
Of course there are highlights - "THE GOODWILL GAMES" blends well-known themes with new counterpoints..."DANCING FLAMES" the upbeat tempo of Davis is in full swing - invigorating and simply intoxicating with melody penetrating the inner-rhythm strands of your being, very effective..."THE GOOSE FROM SMOLENSK" has festival written all over it, happy people dancing in the square with friends and relatives..."FUGUE" the old-masters would be proud, Davis has captured the mood with a touch of 20th Century thrown in.
The booklet with liner-notes shares the background on places, recordings and the seasons...along with some great pictures showing where this was done and by whom, not to mention the Cyrillic version which reads the opposite direction, how unique.
Once again Chip Davis and the Mannheim Steamroller gang have come up with an extraordinary album...exposing their fans to music from another world - the wonderful culture of the Russian people through music...Chip Davis style!
Total Time: 46:10 on 14 Tracks...American Gramaphone 3094...(1994)
An excellent album!!!!.......1998-08-21
This is a highly recomended album. A great mix of Russia's classical and folk music along with some of Chip Davis's own New Age classics includung a remake of "Danceing Flames" from the Fresh Aire 4 album. Keep it up Chip!!!

Customer Reviews:
just plain awesome........2003-03-31
This is definitely music that rocks you. Filled with dark wanderings and pounding industrial beats, this is the coolest stuff I've heard in a while. Don't get me wrong - I have no idea if this does any justice to Pigface (I've never listened to them), but it totally rocks! Good for Russian majors out there like me...

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28
I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.
Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.
I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.
I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
Recommended.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.
The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

Endearing Collection from John Barry's Early Films.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of John Barry's film music from the 1960's. Besides the various James Bond film themes, impressive selections such as THE IPCRESS FILE, KING RAT and THE CHASE are included. "Wednesday's Child" from the QUILLER MEMORANDUM is very good. There is not a bad cut in the bunch.
GREAT MUSIC BY A GREAT COMPOSER.......2003-11-10
IF THIS CD ONLY HAD "WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD", IT WOULD BE WORTH THE PRICE AND THEN SOME. I FIRST HEARD THIS ARRANGEMENT IN 1981 ON AN EASY LISTENING RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SONGS AS WELL ON THIS CD LIKE "FUN CITY", "WEDNESDAY'S CHILD", AND "NEXT TIME".
INVENTIVENESS FOR ORCHESTRAL COLORS, INFLECTIONS, RHYTHMS.......1998-06-25
After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. I really liked "The Living Daylights" a 007 James Bond thriller produced by John Barry (Warner Brothers 1987). Has anyone heard of John Barry? Evidently he is a quiet and secluded man but he has composed music for quite a few box office film hits, some in the James Bond series. All the tracks on this album are good but I especially liked Thunderball (Track 11) and Goldfinger (Track 17). John Barry is very versatile in his music style but several have that "suspense" feel and bold, base, brass leads. The insert describes his music as "inventiveness for orchestral colors and infectious rhythms; his gift for melody majestically sweeping or deceptively simple". I agree. You'll like this album - most likely all of the 17 tracks with 53 minutes of play.
John Barry revisits his classic themes circa 1968.......1998-05-20
This collection is culled from John Barry's brief association with Columbia records in the sixties. Dull cover art betrays the fact that this is the best John Barry compilation for your money. "The James Bond Theme" has never sounded better, and Barry turns his rather stoic theme for "The Lion in Winter" into a intensive workout for jazz organ. Other hard to find anywhere else themes include "The Ipcress File," "The Quiller Memorandum," and "The Wrong Box." The sixties really did swing!
