About the Artist
How "One Road" came to be...

My name is Cory Donavan Gabel. A few months ago, I composed and recorded several piano songs. Those songs came to be the CD collection you see on this site, entitled "One Road". The story of how this recording came to be is very interesting...

For the last several years, I had been the lead singer and songwriter of an alternative rock band in Los Angeles called Limestone Rome. The group had just disbanded, and rather than form another ensemble, release more records, tour, etc., I was looking to do something entirely different. Pursuing one of my long-held goals, to write piano music, seemed perfect.

In what I can truly describe as an exhilarating creative experience, I wrote over a dozen songs in a few short weeks. My rock-and-roll friends were confused, to say the least, but I was thrilled with the new material and new direction. I decided to record my "new projectÓ with the modest intention of giving a few copies to friends and relatives.

My niece, Rhianna, changed all that.

Rhianna suffers from a rare and catastrophic genetic disorder called Sanfilippo "B" Syndrome. Her body cannot process and eliminate some of the sugars and compounds that you and I can. Instead, these compounds accumulate in her joints, organs, and brain, stopping all normal development. The devastating symptoms include mental retardation, loss of speech and hearing, hyperactivity & dementia. Life expectancy is usually 10-15 years.

There is no cure or treatment. At least not yet.

When I finished recording the new piano material, I did share it with family and friends. I also produced a few dozen CDs for use in a fund raising event to help Rhianna.

The response to the music, and support for the cause, was so overwhelming (and enormously motivating) that it prompted me to fully release the record and sell it to the public.

A significant portion of all proceeds from the sale of this CD will benefit an organization that sponsors research into Rhianna's illness. I hope you enjoy the music, and support our efforts to find a cure.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

    The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    I loved the movie and the music. However, I'm very disappointed to discover that I cannot get the CD to copy to my iPod. This is a pet peeve of mine - I buy the music, I should get to listen to it on whatever device I choose.

    This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

    I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

    Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

    For starters I can't believe there are only four reviews for this gem -- this is far better than Over the Rainbow -- the production is polished and it sounds as if everyone is not only in the same studio but on the same page.

    I'm not going to knock it down a star, but if I would, it would be due to the fact that this is not Willie and Leon, it's basically Willie. Darn, and Leon was in such fine form also -- their songs however are incredible.

    I got this cd because I was following my natural curiosity and looking up Leon (I have always loved Hank Wilson vol 1 right after Carney) and was delighted to find Leon and Willie together.

    This collection is KILLER. If you like Willie on Stardust; it's perfect. If you like Willie doing "traditional" country; it's perfect for that also. If you like Willie turning a song inside out and making you love it; you got it -- it's all here.

    The man is AMAZING and Leon is pretty darn good too.
    Get it -- if you're a Willie fan and you don't have it in your collection, well, shame, shame on you!

    Despite equal billing, this is really a Willie Nelson album with Leon as his special guest. The songs are mostly, if not exclusively, covers of old songs. Many are from the Great American Songbook, but there are others including Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis Presley), Danny Boy (a traditional Irish folk song), I saw the light (Hank Williams) and Wild side of life (Hank Thompson).

    In typical Willie Nelson style, many of these songs are done in a more laid-back style - this is particularly noticeable on Don't fence me in (the Cole Porter song that was a huge success for Bing Crosby and the Andrews sisters) and Heartbreak hotel. Whether you enjoy these versions will depend on your personal taste. I enjoy them as a contrast to the originals, but the originals are still the best.

    Willie and Leon are more in keeping with the originals on ballads such as Always (the Irving Berlin classic) and Far away places (one of my favorite Margaret Whiting songs).

    If, like me, you enjoy Willie's other interpretations of old standards, especially the albums Stardust, Somewhere over the rainbow, Without a song and What a wonderful world, then you will enjoy this set.

    It's worth the price of the entire album just to get one tune: Ridin' down the Canyon. If you've ever lived in the Southwest, this song will give you goose pimples and maybe even bring tears to your eyes. It evokes the romantic beauty of the Sonoran Desert like nothing else I've heard or seen.

    And if you have a soft spot in your heart for old tunes and the old west, hearing Willie & Leon harmonizing on Sioux City Sue and Don't Fence Me In will make you smile.

    I had this album on tape many years ago, but somehow lost it. I've mourned the loss ever since. Just now I found the empty cassette box, and realized I might be able to find the album on Amazon. I'm ordering it because it's a treasure chest of rare beauties.

    This one should be in the stable of every Willie Nelson fan. It also features Leon Russell, but he is clearly the sideman on this album. It contains many old sentimental favorites (Autumn Leaves,Danny Boy), haunting torch songs ( Because of You, Stormy Weather), and even western ballads (Don't Fence Me In, Ridin' Down the Canyon). The selection of songs is fantastic. One drawback is the age of the album, which has a channel-to-channel vascillation. One assumes this is to approximate true stereo. I had the eight track of this album years ago, and the CD sounds the same, hence four stars instead of five. But-this minor issue is eclipsed by the talent of Nelson and Russell singing together. Fans of the Stardust album will welcome this collection of twenty songs as an asset to their library. I couldn't imagine not owning a copy.

    This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

    I first heard this CD when my friend Wendy brought it during a visit to Oregon. We chanted the whole way to the Bonneville Spa and Hotsprings. I liked it so much I borrowed it for a week and finally got my own. Ragani has the most lovely voice and the instrumentals are fulland luscious.

    What immediately strikes me about this recording is Ragani's sincere devotion to her guru and to the divine. This is evidenced in the opening mantra, the Akhanda Prayer, a beautiful prayer to the Guru. Though I am not a musician, each chant on this CD seems to me to be well recorded and more importantly these chants are infused with Ragani's sincerity as a bhakta. I feel as though I am listening to a seasoned yogini when I listen to this fine collection of chants.

    Enfin une lecture des édifices de Pierre
    Bravo, cet ouvrage est indispensable à tous ceux qui veulent comprendre le sens de ce que nous ont laissé les batisseurs de cathédrales, ce travail est un remarquable morceau d'architecture dont la lecture nous démontre que le moyen-âge est une des époques les plus riches de notre civilisation.
    Enrichissant
    Magnifique ouvrage permettant après l'avoir lu, de ne plus jamais visiter et observer les cathédrales. Il est clair que ce n'est pas un livre d'un abord très abordable, mais il explique également quelques fondements de la franc-maçonnerie, et fusille beaucoup d'idées faites sue l'obscurantisme du moyen-âge.
    Difficile d'approche...
    L'auteur a vraisemblablement beaucoup de choses à dire et connait très bien son sujet. Mais un néophyte comme moi voulant y trouver les grances lignes de la symboliques des édifices religieux ne devrait pas choisir cet ouvrage. Le livre va dans tous les sens et fait constamment référence à des récits anciens sans en donner des extraits. Pour se faire plaisir avec ce livre, il faut de sérieuses connaissances dans les écrits anciens, l'histoire, l'architecture,... sinon, on "décroche" très vite. La mauvaise note que je lui donne reflète simplement le peu de plaisir que sa lecture m'a procurée.

    hesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

    But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

    It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

    Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

    However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

    However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

    Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."
