Brilliant album for your collection!.......2004-03-09

Bay Area pianist Barbara Higbie and violinist Darol Anger created a lasting work of wit, talent, and beauty in their album "Tidline," recorded in the early 1980s on the Windham Hill label. This sparkling collection of original compositions for violin and piano is a standout. Although they went on to colaborate with Mike Marshall and others as the Montreux band, and later parted ways for separate collaborations with the Turtle Island String Quartet, Theresa Trull, Matt Glaser and others, this first offering of theirs captures their unique and timeless sound. Their unique brand of energetic Bay Area music cross-pollinated and influenced many contemporary musicians. Pieces on this album range from playful to brooding, driving to laid back. The style is indefinable with elements of jazz, classical, contemporary, rock, roots, string band, swing, ethnic and world music--it is a sound unmistakably their own. Listeners to National Public Radio affiliates may recognize familiar snippits nabbed for inclusion on countless radio programs. Tideline remains a favorite of mine after 20 years of listening.

Album Description

TIDELINE is a Belgian Progressive rock band, led by keyboards player Didier De ROOS. In 1979, it recorded a beautiful first album called "Crowded Room". This develops a superb, intimist and romantic chamber rock. Then we had to wait sixteen years to see a follow-up, with the great "Siren Song" (1995). This opus is performed by a duet, and include a large line-up (Clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, violin…). Altogether sixteen musicians, including Daniel DENIS (UNIVERS ZERO). This is a melodic and warm music, full of complexity and audacity, close to John GREAVES' style, both on the voice and climates levels. Not to be missed !

Tideline is a tour de force of sensitive, informed musicianship- visionary and deeply compelling. Comparable to the music of Sting, Peter Gabriel or the Dave Matthews Band. It's got a jazz/rock sound, mixing technical rhythms with strong, melodic, driven grooves. Sophisticated rock that embraces the improvisation and complexity of jazz.

tideline is a wonderful first effort for this band. many times the singer reminded me of sting's early material, or somewhat like dave matthews, or even peter gabriel. "queen for a day" (the first track) is one of the greatest songs i've ever downloaded!!! i found the musicianship to be of the highest caliber and the lyrics were simply poetry. i am recommending this cd to many of my friends, and can't wait to hear any other material this band has to offer. they are a quality musical wave, rolling in the right direction.
