"Spring Is In The Poet" draws upon the rich textures of the natural world to create an emotional landscape: one with stillness in rhythms, one with activity in ambiance. These eastern and western influenced tracks range from raga-like meditations to folk dance to jazz solos, bringing us to our own mystical place in the unfolding story. The Sufi mystic, Hazrat Inayat Khan spoke of “When the artist loses himself in his art, then the art comes to life”, and Sill has found a way to invoke the shared aspiration of humans - to bring our unexpressed inner world to life as music.

My gripe with most recordings of "art songs" is that the performances are boring, as if the music has been fed through a vocal processor, technique overrides heart. This is never the case with Odekhiren Amaize, who makes each song his own. For my money, there is no voice or heart more perfectly suited to interpret these deep, rich Russian songs than his deep, rich Bass-Baritone...the combination of Rakhmaninov and Amaize is nothing short of amazing, and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion even though (not speaking Russian and not first having read the English translations) I didn't have a clue what the text was about. Absolutely stunning!

This CD contains an excellent selection of songs from the Russian 5. I was atrracted immediately by the Borodin songs which open this CD, and was suprise to find that the quality of the songs are just as good for the less well known Balakirev and Cui. And maybe because of their lack of formal music training, they tend to excel in this short genre. Borodina does justice to all the songs. Her voice is dark and seductive and her interpretation tends to understate (when comparing to Gorchakova), which is perfectly fine. Once I know the songs, I find myself hard to stop listening to them, it seems like each repeated listening reveals something new.

    We discovered Gary Sill's Spring is in the Poet on the CD player at a lakeside cottage we rented one weekend. It is sublime. His CDs are largely unknown, but since we bought one, everyone who has listened has loved his music.

    Beautiful listening while in the kitchen, in the car or even while walking in nature, this set of improvisational piano stirrings by Gary Sill leaves one, well, poetic. Many "new age" CD's don't seem to hold the artistic edge. Sill allows his vision to ramble, giving us space for the imaginal. Delightful.

    This CD sounds like a recording of a graduate recital and I can't take too much of Linn's voice, but she certainly should get an "A" for programming this collection.

    There are songs of the Mighty Five Russian composers: Borodin, Cui, Balakirev, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, and well as others who were their contemporaries or were influenced by them.

    I particularly like the inclusion of some songs I don't often hear, like the Complaint of the Bride, and From My Tears, along side the chestnuts like None, but the Lonely Heart, Hopek, The Sea Queen, and others.

    Worth it for the recordings of the songs not often heard. For the chestnuts, there are better recordings.

    Locatelli is, of course, an exceptionally tasty sheep's milk cheese related to Romano, but he was also a very important and talented composer of violin music. Later generations looked back at him as the "Baroque Paganini," and his music abounds in technical difficulties and flashy writing for the soloist. Of course, instrumental virtuosity alone doesn't make a great composer, but in this collection of concertos and orchestra suites we see that the challenge of writing other types of music didn't faze Locatelli composer one bit. The so-called "Theatrical Introductions" are what we now call "overtures" or "suites," consisting largely of dance movements arranged in a pleasing sequence. The whole collection is expertly performed by this excellent "authentic" instrument group. --David Hurwitz

    I stumbled on these pieces by hearing one on the radio, loving it, and buying this CD. These are bright, inventive, concerto-style compositions in a style very reminiscent of Vivaldi. From the first bars of the first track, you know you're in for a treat. The first CD contains six "Introduttioni Teatrali", or theater introductions, which were apparently played before theater productions. They are in typical baroque concerto style and might better be called concerti for orchestra. The second CD contains six concerti with varying numbers of movements.

    The playing is excellent, full of life and energy. The recording quality is fine, and the hall has a full, rich sound. After listening to this CD a few times, the pieces feel like old friends I've known all my life. If you like Vivaldi concerti, I'm sure you'll enjoy these.
