If R.E.M. hadn't already blazed the trail years ago, Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want would be a seminal album, with its earnest harmonies, fluid melodies, and jangly guitars. And while Vertical Horizon may not have taken many forks off the road to Athens, they have whipped up an excellent pop-rock meld out of the purloined elements. Beginning with the ardent and anthemic "We Are," the pop band who began life on Georgetown's central campus nearly a decade before this major-label debut was released unleashes a personal diary of loss, love, and angst. The band, led by school chums Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane, find they just can't leave their pedagogical leanings behind. Only this time their investigations are into the mysteries of the human heart rather than Zeno's famous paradoxes. But the real paradox here is how a band so derivative can have made such a credible album. This time familiarity doesn't breed contempt. "You're a God," an edgy lament about putting someone on a pedestal, could have been lifted right out of the Alanis songbook, but it still manages to shimmer on its own merit, as do most of the 11 songs. --Jaan Uhelszki

If you've only heard their radio singles then you haven't heard the best of Vertical Horizon. This is a very solid CD, well worth buying, especially now that it is cheap. The first 7 tracks are all excellent as well as the album closer shackled. If you like quality melodic rock music, you will love this.

I originally had bought this album in high school and have since played it from then on.

It's not that this album is particularly stunning, amazing, original... because it's not. It's the best for what was out at the time, playing on the radio way too much and an album that 90% of people I know own.

What I love about this album is the fact that it represents that time in music (mid-90s) wonderfully, where alternative music really became popular and started branching off into more creative venues.

I agree with the other reviews, that it's terribly formulaic. But so was most of the music at that time (like I stated, it represents that time in music). There is an amazing gem on this album, however, which is "Grey Sky Morning/Best I Ever Had." Meloncholy, sad, and relenting. I know there were even a few covers made of it, it's a wonderful song that I do hope becomes a classic of sorts.

Though this review is most likely not very helpful, I do hope that this strikes a chord with those that 'grew up' in the mid 90's and that this album is remembered as a small treasure of that time. It's terribly familiar and wonderful to listen to.

Pop quiz, kids: what do The Calling, Nine Days, and Vertical Horizon all have in common? If your guess was that they all shopped at Express for Men, you're wrong (I think Nine Days actually shops at Abercrombie). Actually, these three bands all belong to fin de siecle American rock/pop. The sounds of the 90s are unmistakable: the apotheosis of it being Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life": loud, energetic, catchy. Everything was so clear back then: music was about precipitous decibel levels and fast tempos. But with the sweeping in of the new millennium, and the revolution in digital music, things got much more complicated; everything fractured into new sounds and endless variations: we now have glitch-heavy indietronic and freak folk, trip hop, and dozens more. Not that the acoustic movement in sound didn't have a substantial effect on mid-90s pop. But "back then" mainstream "rock/pop" was obvious to pretty much everyone. However, in the music bands like Vertical Horizon produced, you could see tinges of a new, more fractured version of pop.
Everything You Want is a case in point.
The album begins with derivative music: it's all choruses and guitar hooks on the first two tracks. The lyrics here are mostly about overly dramatic scenarios and the kind of high school hyperboles that many a teenager has lied on their beds listening to.
The hit single, though, demonstrates what I had mentioned earlier: the guitar is forced to surrender some of its spotlight to post-recording effects, as on the album's hit single, "Everything You Want." Muted electric keyboards lace over and through acoustic guitar while Scannell sings about the nostalgia-angst in pursuing new relationships. Try finding that in an early 90s pop opus. The sound on this track has a compelling mix of instrumentation and good flow, but there has to be a more graceful way to express the tribulations of young love.
The highlight of the album, though, is clearly "The Best I Ever Had": this is R.E.M. on Dramamine. Steel percussion instrumentation bears resemblance to orca whales bouncing music off one another. Again, Scannell sings of love, but this times he reminisces of past love. Grey Sky Morning is a perfect alternate title here: the message is one of lost passion and emptiness after times of great fulfillment. The reality of experiences like the one Matthew cites here is pressing.
Unfortunately, the rest of Everything You Want is unremarkable and formulaic. The theme of unrequited love and spiteful relationships features on these other songs. As other critics have commented, the songs stick to a single formula, both sonically and lyrically that easily tires. Many of the tracks even lose the kind of deliberate and careful articulation so basic to beautiful pop music. What exactly does it mean to say "Here in the light / It burns you out sometimes /Here in the shell of a sun / We echo on"? Regardless of how Vertical Horizon has tinged there music here with the sounds of "a new musical order", this definitely isn't everything you want.

After a few years .... it still is a great album!.......2006-05-25

I bought this ablum when it first came out. I really enjoyed it. Being an older rocker myself; I enjoyed the music. The kids (mine) liked it too but they soon grew tired of it probably because I played it so much.

The other evening I heard another cover of a couple of the songs covered by Verticle Horizon on this album. So, I pulled theirs out again and listened again. It is still (after 6 or so years) an excellent album. I put it back into my car and now some of my friends are asking .... "hey, who is that? I really like it!"
It does still sound new.

Some songs are gems, others are quite mediocre.......2006-04-16

I remember watching Dawson's Creek faithfully every weekend many years ago and loved the kind of songs they played in the show. Listening to this album kind of reminds me of the style of songs played on Dawson's Creek, but I guess its almost like listening to any Goo Goo Dolls album - too many songs sound similar to each other, its almost formulaic. However, the band manages to tweak the formula sometimes to produce very good melodies that stand out from the rest. For me, these gems on the album are "Everything You Want" and "Best I Ever Had". "Finding Me" is quite good but it sounds a bit too "generic" - too typical of pop-guitar music these days. Personally, I find most of the songs forgettable except for the 2 gems I've picked out.

I have enjoyed and admired Basia's bright vocals for two decades now; this is a fine collection and representation of the creative stylings of this jazz-pop-soul-samba lovin' Polish woman. She can get into your heart!

Someone asked in the reviews about pronouncing her name. It's "Bosh-uh," as in rhyming with "Sasha" or "Tasha."

If you enjoy this "best of" album, I guarantee you'll find a lot more great stuff to sing out really loud to on all of her other albums. She's worth it.

This Foxy Looking/Sultry Voiced Gal Is Fun To Listen To! Anyone know how to pronounce her name??? This is a great album to have!Except for a couple of songs where she seems to fall a little flat, the rest is outstanding. Her style of vocals sets herself apart from other singers and I find that refreshing. GOOD STUFF!!!! AAA+++

This is a great collection of hits for adult contemporary and jazz music fans. Basia's voice is unique yet soothing to listen to. If you love the vocal stylings of Sade or Corrine Drewery of Swing Out Sister....then you will enjoy the sweet sounds of Basia.

Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

A SCORE THAT STANDS WITHOUT THE FILM.......2007-08-06

Lisa Sutton's cruel commentary about the music of Bacharach and David for
this film should be ignored! This is a score that is rich in invention
and the songs stand on their own. This may not be Burt and Hal at their
best, but the songs are awfully good, especially "If I Could Go Back"
and "Question Me An Answer". Musicians interested in inventive melodies
and probing lyrics should check out this CD.

NOT a Bacharach/David masterpiece!.......2007-04-01

The movie was woeful..the soundtrack just as bad...and Hals lyrics were NEVER this bad...however for any Bacharach fan this is a must have....beautifully restored and reproduced.

Hilarious version of Lost Horizon!.......2007-03-27

This film came out in 1973 and I saw it in its original full length version (about 3hours and 15 min.) Executives from Columbia Pictures were there, it was the premeire, and they were groaning and at the intermission fights broke out(verbal) and ushers passed among them and myself and everyone else with soundtrack albums. The executives left the theatre and scaled the albums across Columbus Circle in Boston and I and a few friends retrieved them and had quite a few for free. We returned to the film and I have always loved this crazy redition of Lost Horizon, the miscasting, the terrible sets, the odd ball music for the story, the dubbed Liv Ullmann, the dance routines of Olivia Hussey..all of it. You cannot find a musical like it, or a soundtrack like it. Columbia execs were unimaginative; they should have believed in this film. The next day after this premeire in Boston, New York etc. (simultaneous I suppose) the film was cut, the posters were taken down..there was a ton of material to buy..T Shirts, dolls, posters of all sizes, bath towels with the poster on them, records of the sd tk of course, and small pop up sets of the entire film. It was to be a massive hit..In two days time all of the paraphanalia was removed, and the posters said, Last Two Weeks, and in two weeks the whole thing disappeared.
But many people came to see it..lines of people, and, when they heard it had been cut, they gave up, and in two weeks everyone said farewell to this film.
I have many treasures from that opening nite, and now I have the CD of the sound track. Anyone who loves movie magic or madness has to see and hear this film; it is unique.

Enjoy this soundtrack and get your hands on a DVD ..they are out there!

The first 1/2 hour is terrific and THEN...the movie turns into a gooey musical.

Some of the songs are quite tuneful with very complex melodies and rhythms...but those LYRICS ???? Not exactly Hal David's best work, apparently he and Burt Bacharach didn't quite mesh on this one.

The singers should have been dubbed although Sally Kellerman isn't half bad on "Things I Will Not Miss" but blows it on "Reflections." (Not her fault.)

Then, the last 1/2 hour seems rushed and while the ending works...it lacks the emotional punch needed to put it over.

Anyway, a lot to like, but a lot of "what WERE they thinking?"

3-Stars may seem high, but looking back as a curio item, it is warranted...but you were warned (John Gielgud as an Asian???)

journey back to Shangri-La..........2007-01-04

In the early 1970s, an era when the movie musical genre had a brief resurgance in popularity, Columbia Pictures decided to revive their 1937 fantasy gem LOST HORIZON, and turn it into a musical. With Burt Bacharach and Hal David committed to write the score, and the cast headed by Peter Finch and Liv Ullmann, LOST HORIZON crashed and burned horribly at the box-office; nevertheless, the film has a rabid following and the soundtrack album conjures back those magical sounds of Shangri-La.

The main reason why the film never worked was the contemporary `70s music, which seemed out-of-place within the period setting of the story. On the soundtrack, you can just sit back and appreciate the soaring melodies, which Bacharach obviously had a ball composing. The liner notes of the CD reveal the number of stars who had their singing dubbed (obviously Peter Finch and Olivia Hussey). Liv Ullmann's voice was dubbed by Diana Lee (who also dubbed Samantha Eggar in "Doctor Dolittle", and Charlie's mother in "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory"). Interestingly, despite being dubbed here, Liv Ullmann later starred in a Broadway musical version of "I Remember Mama", so her own warbling must have been of some merit...

Sally Kellerman, a non-singer, nevertheless decided to record her own vocals, and as a result "The Things I Will Not Miss" is one of the best songs; other standouts include "The World is a Circle" and "I Come to You". The sound quality of the CD is acceptable; taken from the best-surviving analogue master tapes. There is often some harsh analogue distortion throughout, but nothing too obtrusive.

A must for admirers of Bacharach, or fans of the musicals.

Mud Slide Metamorpho and the Seer Horizon..........2007-02-01

Well people, you'll be pleased to know that after my last review I have managed to stay out of trouble. Mostly, I have been giving Seer lessons to a gifted friend of mine known as T. He has turned out to be a good apprentice - but I must be careful. I have caught him trying on my Seers hat when I wasn't looking and, not only that, has started giving lectures in the mid-west using my name. My guides advised me not to sue. Guido suggested reasoning with him (HAH! like reasoning worked with him!). Marshy thought it wise for her to lull him with her collagen lips. And Chance? He wanted to use strong-arm tactics which goes against my beloved nature. So- again- I will have to figure this out for myself.
No nevermind all that. Your gifted Metamorpho made his way down to the dungeon (with de-humidifier) to check the archives for a worthy selection. I came up with a wonderful album to review. I am sure you will all agree.
Ahhhh..... we have James Taylor here (Yes! With lots of hair!), which goes to show you that there was a time when he wasn't the "constant" icon that we all know and love today. However, this album is testimony to his wonderful talent and ability which has been there from the start. And the songs? Lovely, lilting, uplifting, pensive, hopeful vignettes that convey a peace and serenity rarely found so early in one's career.
What matters so most here is the ensemble playing. So comfortable-so warm. James' acoustic guitar along with walking bass, electric guitar fills, tasty piano bits and understated but effective drums. We even have a banjo chiming in and horns on some selections. This "just right" combination really is a pleasure to hear now and a much needed mellow escape from current a go-go, hammering dischordant chordal offerings that frenzy all our fine nervous systems. No- in this proffering you have to imagine yourself on a sunny day by a lake. Hummingbirds flying around and the sky so blue and filled with cotton candy clouds. This album is easy-going. A fine example of soft acoustic composition. It has a little bit of country soul sprinkled with homegrown natural personality. Nothing pretentious here people. Meet you down at the swimming brook.
There really are no big statements here- which - in a way makes it more refreshing. From the start- James gives us an uplift with "Love Has Brought Me Around". Then, the deserved Carole King classic "You've Got a Friend". And you know, as well as I, that the friend here is not a human as we know it. We get some melancholy ("Places In My Past", "Hey Mister, That's Me Up On the Jukebox", "Long Ago and Far Away"), some breaking free groove ("Let Me Ride"), survival and moving on ("Highway Song"). Did I mention the saga of "Machine Gun Kelly"? A home grown boy gone astray. How could James forget that legend? This album also has lovely acoustic only tunes "You Can Close Your Eyes" and "Isn't It Nice to be Home Again". With these, James proves what a vital force he is by himself.
In closing, let me say that I am struck by how good and reinvigorating most of these tunes are. There are bleak moments yes- but there is always the sunshine and hope to move you past the negative. This album is a warm sweater on a cold winter's day and a glass of ice tea during a heatwave. Investigate what a true artist can do.
Now I must go. The guides have sounded the alarm that T is now taking his lectures into the Bible Belt and I have to stop him before the picketts and the protestors begin to swarm. Must protect my reputation you know!

When I hear James Taylor I am transported to America's South. A wistful and tender feeling comes over me as I listen to the understated power of this man's voice and lyrics. Besides his album "Sweet Baby James"--"Mud Slide Slim", "One Man Dog", even "Walking Man" all capture and evoke the same gentle beauty and ,for me, cherished Southern memories.

Exceptional Album!.......2006-05-01

With its stripped down austerity, this is one of the most masterful albums of the seventies. James was at his songwriting and arranging peak so early in his career, it is remarkable. "Love Has Brought Me Around" starts it off with a fine and gentle restraint. "You've Got A Friend" was anthemic.
"Riding On The Railroad" still haunts these many years later. "MudSlide Slim and the Blue Horizon" and "You Can Close Your Eyes" are amazing in their playfulness and hopefulness. This was James Taylor at the pinnacle of his creative muse...

JAMES TAYLOR THE MAN!.......2006-03-10

Mud Slide Slim is the best album of james Taylor. 2nd is Sweet baby james. My favorite tracts in this album are PLACES IN MY PAST,RIDING ON A RAILROAD, YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND,& LONG AGO & FAR AWAY among others. All the songs in this album are beautiful. I never tire of listening to it. Its always in my car stereo & a perfect companion wherever I go. To me, JT's peak as singer/songwriter is evident in this 1971 album. That's only my opinion. Of course I have all of JT's album in my collection. But MUD stands out. I respectfully recommend this album to you,the reviewer, wherever you are in the world. Thank you.

I purchased this CD for a friend that does not have or know how to use a computer. After receiving this CD I did listen to it and did not care for it but it does not matter if I liked it or not since it was for somone else.

" With our last album [1999's "Everything You Want"], we still had some unanswered questions about what kind of band we wanted to be," says lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Matt Scannell. "We knew we were on a journey and wanted to keep developing. With this album, we're more certain than ever of our direction and identity."

Produced by John Shanks, "Go" is about leaving your mark in a world where every day brings on another attack of the clones. "Most of these songs have to do with taking steps," notes Matt. "Do the things you want to do, experience what you need to, both positive and negative. It's about living your life."

Given the course of events over the last year or so, the band could have called the album "Go, Already!" The members of Vertical Horizon were ready to rock months a"Go", but circumstances beyond their control delayed the release of "Go". Turned out to be a good thing, as the band went back into the studio to record a new song, "I'm Still Here." The track came out so well, it's now the album's premiere single.

Says Matt, "It just goes to show that even when you think you're done with something, you should keep on working. The song is a statement about remaining strong, and the record is more balanced with the addition of that one song."

Like their earlier work, "Go" offers a sublime unity of thought and melody. "I'm fascinated by the ways people communicate and miscommunicate," says Matt. "The words we say aren't always the words we mean. As a writer, I like to explore the gray areas between the black and white." That's the sentiment behind songs like the harmony-rich "Won't Go Away" and "Echo," a bittersweet plea for individuality. Hammerhead guitar parts in tracks like "One of You" and "Sunshine" underscore a certain cynicism about love and resistance. Says Matt, "I don't much care for the sweet and bubbly. Music should reflect the world as we really see it, not necessarily the world we idealize."

I am not a fan of pop music in general, but this CD is an exception.

The songs are all 'catchy tunes' with enough of a rock element thrown in to remind you that you are not listening to a Top 40 station.

Too bad the band has broken up, from what I hear.

This album has a song for every mood. It's rockin', soulful and deep. Few rock bands have the courage to make an album like this. AMAZING! The production and layered guitars are intoxicating with purity and honesty Matt Scannell's voice. 5 stars.

Good but repetitive.......2006-08-30

I like this album. My favorite song is "I'm still here" but mostly because of the meaning it has to me. But like their previous album, although their music is often fun and has interesting (and good) messages, I find their musical style a bit repetitive between songs, so that I get tired of the album after a while.

Dude, this album comes right out of the gate and blows a vanna! But it makes up for it by the end, and just when you think these guys almost zonked, the whole thing comes together. Track 7 sounds like a bloads to me, but what the hey, I've been tone deaf ever since I had the Sour Mash at Dylan's. Rock on fellars! Grover

I am a huge fan of VH from 'Everything you want'. I pre-ordered the original release of 'GO' knowing that I would love it. About 6 months later, I got to see them live and fell in love with them and the album all over again. My two girls are brainwashed now, as well. I recently purchased the re-released version and love the way they rearranged the playlist to make it absolutely perfect.

It's a true shame that VH doesn't get the promoting and airplay that they deserve. This is an amazingly talented band that, I hope, will be around for a very long time.

Please buy this album! You will not regret it. If you ever get the chance to see them live, take it. They are awesome!

When I bought this, I was a little concerned about the low price; six discs for $35? Something's wrong. Well my friends, I'm glad to report that this is one killer deal for $35! These are spectacular blues performances recorded live in the studio. They were recorded excellently and remastered superbly, and any blues enthusiast or audiophile will not be disappointed. If you happen to fall into both categories, this will become a treasured part of your collection.

Fleetwood Mac had many incarnations, the most famous being the one with Buckingham and Nicks, but this is my favorite Mac by far. Peter Green was a blues junkie, and his writing and guitar playing earned him the respect of even the old masters of the genre, and two of the included discs are performed with just those men. What a dream team: the old guard playing with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac! Music for the ages.

Fantastic 6 disc collection .......2006-08-14

A first few years of fantastic British blues combo Fleetwood Mac on Blue Horrizon label: All songs from that period are here on 6 discs in big long yellow box - all discs are in their slipcases : First two albums (on separate discs with rare and unissued versions and studio chats), first oficial compilation of singles, two CD's with sessions in Chess studios and rare tracks and alternative versions on last disc.
Peter Green is fantastic here, sound is pretty fine on this remasters - I was confused only with track order on each discs: order is same on CD's and on general booklet inside box, but not the same on each CD booklets because label try to keep original artwork of CD's.

Early Mac sessions, not a substitute for the early albums........2005-05-05

Personally I fall into the catagory of the completeist that would really enjoy a set like this, although I would not recommend it for those not familiar with early Mac. All the takes of the same song gets a bit overwhelming and the Eddie Boyd tracks have been left off to the "Pious Bird" disc which was a bit of a disappointment. Also, while I respect the fact that they bring you the original album artwork, I find it a little confusing since it really does not reflect the material on the discs themselves. If you want to familiarize yourself with early Mac, get the first one and maybe "Pious Bird of Good Omen," "English Rose" (if you can find it)or "Then Play On." If you enjoy those, then maybe this boxset is for you. It is really hard to argue with the value factor here, though. Six discs for under $40 is a good deal anyway you slice it.

THE MAGIC BENEATH THE SURFACE.......2005-05-02

When John Lennon recorded "Yer Blues" for the WHITE ALBUM, few remember now that he meant it as a satire. Both McCartney and Harrison asked him not to do it; but Lennon was pointedly aiming his acid tongue at the British blues revival epitomized by bands such as Fleetwood Mac. Such was the love for American blues that young Stones like Bill Wyman and Keith Richards tell stories of leaving their hotel rooms during their first American tour not to meet up with girls in the bars but to scoop up arm loads of R&B records from obscure little music shops to take home to listen and study.

This Fleetwood Mac was certainly a band of true believers. They wanted to play blues and be blues down to the last detail. Such was their love for the blues they deliberately imitated the primitive recording sound on their records to duplicate the feel of those old Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters discs. While young English blues lovers treasured this approach in the late 1960's, this comes across as nothing more than an annoying affectation to us today. As Eric Clapton's recent forays into the raw blues of Robert Johnson proves, you don't have to employ crude recording techniques to present authentic blues. But given their own premise, Fleetwood Mac did it well. Their first three albums worked the blues mines of Chicago blues for young English ears. Over the years, these three albums have been packaged and repackaged with particular interest for American buyers for the original version of "Black Magic Woman". Truth be told, no matter how these albums were presented, they never sold well in America.

Far more interesting are the two discs recorded live at the Chess studios with many of the heroes Fleetwood Mac had celebrated over the years-particularly Otis Spann and Buddy Guy. While I personally value these two discs above all the others in this box set, it is only fair to say that when sold as an album these sessions comprised the lowest selling Fleetwood Mac album of all time.

The sixth disc is THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC album many other reviewers feel is the bright spot of the set. It is really a collection of leftovers from the first three albums that didn't fit just thrown together. In spite of the fact this was never intended as a working whole, THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC has a playful and almost joyful air that the first three studio albums do not. While I personally prefer the live sessions recorded at Chess, it is easy to see why many love THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC above the over discs in this set.

As far as British blues goes, Ten Years After had it all over Fleetwood Mac. If you want a particularly powerful Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer record, there is no excuse not to have THEN PLAY ON. THEN PLAY ON is the last Fleetwood Mac record in this band's incarnation. It is a work of genius and the sound of two men before they went completely insane.

If your record collection is fairly small (less than 500 albums), I would advise you to seek out more the more classic rock albums everyone should have to enjoy. If, however, your record library is fairly expansive (1000-2000) and you have an interest in small sub-currents in rock history, then this chapter in British rock history may well be for you. Was Fleetwood Mac at this time important? Yes, but it was well below the surface as far as us Yanks were concerned.

If you are ready, by all means get this box set. Just be forewarned that not all your friends will be ready to enjoy the beauty that is there.

This CD was my first introduction to 'acoustic harp music'. Anyone looking for sublime, peaceful, ethereal, inter-dimensional music that connects you to the realm of Spirit ... purity ...innocence ... HERE IT IS! This CD will clear your stress. It will melt feelings of anxiety... they will disappear. It is *not* an exaggeration. In fact, the listener may well find problems and cares will be viewed from a different light. The 'sound scapes' of this pure and crystal clear stringed instrument do indeed take the listener to "beyond the horizon". The musical realm created by Hilary Stagg is one of grace, beauty, love. Sometimes we forget what a precious gift Life is ... At unexpected times, when listening to this CD, my thoughts wander -- long forgotten dreams and hopes from the past greet me and are compared with those of today. All kinds of people and events are remembered. Some of the best "new age" I've listened to ...........1998-10-07

I listen to a lot of different new age music (Suzanne Cianni, Lorenna McKennit, Windham Hill, Michael Gettel, etc) and Hilary Stagg has recently become my favorite (my massueuse introduced me to it). When I listen to his music I'm instantly transferred to a quiet and peaceful place.

I have never liked opera, but this music is a gentle introduction with enough contemporary addition to pique my interest. Very well done. I have also purchased the first Aria CD and also number 3.

Exquisite! My favorite of the Arias and favorite CD by far........2006-11-06

This CD speaks to the heart. It expresses powerful emotions of longing, grief, and tenderness. A baring of the soul with such beauty. Clair Marlo's vocals in Lullabye (Sviraj) are absolutely divine. It sends me. Here we are treated to at least three different vocals, not just Rebecca Luker, and they blend and flow so beautifully. It's just wonderful. What a treat. Can't say enough about this CD. I love it.

A great follow-up to an outstanding musical experience.......2006-03-15

ARIA volume 1 was certainly a winner and this follow-up CD is fantastic. I liked the first CD so much that every time I went to the record store or online at Amazon I would look to see if Paul Schwartz and written a sequel. Schwartz selects wonderful works from classical music and re-arranges them so that they maintain the essential spirit and intent of the original but are made accessible for the ears of contemporary listeners. Thus, you owe it to yourself to listen to these gems.

Rebecca Luker's super voice is wonderful as she weaves a mystical mood with Monteverdi's Lament of Arianna; Catalani's "Ebben ne Andro Lontano" from La Wally; "Addio" from Verdi's La Traviata; "Barcarolle" from Offenbach's Contes De Hoffman and "Ave Maria" by Caccini. I looked Luker up on the web and found that she has starred in various Broadway productions. Her voice is incredible and Schwartz integrates her angelic sound into the electronic instrumentation. The "Ave Maria" is somewhat odd, with the strong precussions, but the choir and Rebecca Luker keep it within bounds.

This CD differs from the first ARIA in that we are treated to several instrumental works arranged by Schwartz. "Horizon" is a moody composition anchored by viola and cello. "Cantilena" is a piano solo played by Schwartz, a charming piece that echoes back to Verdi's "Addio" as well as the Croatina Lullabye sung by Clair Marlo.

A second outstanding singer, Clair Marlo, delivers "Sviraj, a Croatian Lullabye" which Schwartz offers in two distinct arrangements, once in Croatian and then again in English.

Faure's "Pavane" is very well done with Marc Antoine playing the guitar solo. The work is improvised so that a contemporary jazz interpretation is offered.

Steve Barton's voice, accompanied by the oboe, offers us "Leiermann" from Die Wintereise by Schubert. This is a dreamy sad odd spacey work with lyrics about a freezing ancient shoeless hurdy-gurdy man. The work is full of mystery and retains Schubert's complexity.

Paul Schwartz makes the outstanding compositions of previous generations come alive for contemporary audiences.

Grandiose and inspiring.......2005-01-31

This is type of music I expect to hear: strong, complex arrangements executed with passion and flair. I first heard Earthbound, and knew instantly that Paul Schwartz is up to something. His work far surpasses others in this genre.

I especially love the vocals here. Some of the intros are a tad cliche, but I can live with that. The voice is convincing and energetic, masterful even. This is one of the best CDs I have bought in years.

I admit I am biased, but I am a HUGE Vertical Horizon fan, and this CD will NOT let you down. All their songs are great and I never seem to tire of them no matter how many times I listen to them. Great musicians and great lyrics.

Vertical Horizon Continues Upwards.......2007-01-10

I adore this latest release from Vertical Horizon. Of the three CD's I have from this group, this is my favorite, which says a lot because I played their last CD, Everything You Want, constantly. Go has a more refined sound than Everything You Want while still keeping that edgy, but not quite metal sound. The group seems to have worked out their place in the music world going from the James Taylor like sound of Running on Thin Ice to the trying to be a metal band sound of Everything You Want. It is the perfect blend. After only listening to it twice I couldn't get the song I'm Still Here out of my head. The vocal blending of the members' voices is nicely collaborated with just enough vocal originality from the lead singer to not be confused with all those other bands. The song styles are fairly similar so that the CD blends well without the monotomy of every song sounding exactly the same. Whether you are new to this band or a long time fan you will be hooked on this CD.

Great CD - why no more air time........2006-02-13

I've been a big fan of Vertical Horizon since their '99 release "Everything You Want". Who else can you listen to for middle of the road pop/rock with clean lyrics and a great beat. This hasn't gotten hardly any air time on the radio compared to their earlier release but is equal to (if not better) than their last.

good, not great.......2005-07-01

I didn't expect much from vertical Horizon. I hated the song everything you want, wasn't too fond of best I ever had, and only liked a few songs off the first album (your a god, Miracle) and the rest was just bad (we are) or listenable a few times (give you back). I really never wanted to hear from the band again, but then I heard I'm still hear and loved it. I got the album after listening to it in a store, thinking that everything was good. Well I must not have listened to it well enough. The first three tracks "when you cry", "I'm still here", and "Forever" are a perfect representation of how an album should begin, however, you should never have all your best material in the first five songs, which is the problem with this album. "Sunshine" is a harder track which is definately not what this band is good at (see "We are") in fact, this band's harder rock songs are terrible! "Goodbye again" makes up for it, and is the other really good song, but then the album spins out of control.

"Echo" isn't a bad song, it's just kind of annoying. When a song thats four minutes long seems like its dragging on for a long time, you know there is something wrong. "Its over" is good, but you forget it the moment it ends, the same thing happens with "One of you", and once again with "Won't go away". All three of these songs can be mixed up with the other, which is a bad sign. All of these songs are good, but they don't stand out, and aren't very memorable. "Inside" rescues the album a bit. It's the longest song on here, but it's good. "Underwater" show that the group has a little bit of orginality, as the song is very unique, but it's just not very good, and there isn't much to stop you from turning off the album. It's been a long time since the last vertical horizon release, and I can't help but think, from how little this album sold, that it could be the band's final release. If the whole album sounded like tracks 1,2,3, and 5, it would be so much better, but instead, they choose to surround those songs with fuller material. Better than "Everthing you want" and a sure fire release for VH fans, but I suggest everyone else look elsewhere for a worthwhile alternative rock release. Buy Matchbox 20's, sister hazel's, or counting crows albums instead.

The Follow Up Album Four Years In The Making.......2005-06-28

Following the success of their 1999 release "Everything You Want", Vertical Horizon finally got back into the studio and released 2003's "Go." A solid follow up to their mega-release, "Go" is full of memorable tracks. The songs have a slightly more mellow and acoustic feel to them but the sound of Vertical Horizon is still quite recognizable.

"When You Cry" has a familiar sound and feel to it reminiscent of Greenwheel's single "Breathe" and is thus a great song. "I'm Still Here", the major single released from the album is also a great tune. "Forever" and "Echo" are two more impressive songs along with "Inside." Once again the album features a unique sounding song (such as "Everything You Want"'s "Shackled") in the closing track, "Underwater." If you close your eyes the song really does make you feel as if you are floating underwater!

Overall, the album is great but for newcomers to Vertical Horizon I feel that "Everything You Want" still represents a better introduction. If you're already a fan then you should wonder why you don't already have this album! Definitely a great addition to the VH library.
