A subtle emotional dichotomy seems to be at work in the reflective solo piano works found on this, the 1985 debut recording from Montana-born pianist Philip Aaberg. Many of Aaberg's contemplative selections carry a faint, bittersweet flavor, suggesting that something beautiful or treasured is slowly slipping from our collective grasp, perhaps due to complacency, ambivalence, avarice, or neglect. High Plains conveys Aaberg's deep attachment to his native landscapes, and affecting, wistful pieces such as "Remembering This Place," "The Big Open," and the three-part "Three from the Hills" (with its middle section subtitled "Once It's Gone...") all spell out the pianist's implied notion that we may never again have things quite good as we have them now--though what we now have can be exquisite, gorgeous, and humbling. Musically, Aaberg's sense of melody is elusive though never beyond our grasp. His compositions speak softly and evocatively, likely in search of a properly attuned ear. Other than the forcefully played "Westbound," Aaberg's music here is a worthwhile experience. --Terry Wood

2 out of 5 stars Elevator music goes western.........2006-12-22

Only the "Westbound" track sounds good, the rest is just forgetable "landscape" music that could be found on the Weather Channel. Only for those with niche tastes like "New Age" music.

    5 out of 5 stars The Trifecta.......2006-08-05

To truly appreciate Phillip Aaberg's music, you need to own his first three albums: this one, "Out of the Frame" and "Upright." This album was his debut, and is wistful yet melodic. My favourite song is "Remembering This Place" and all of the songs on this album have that kind of 'something is being lost here, and we need to recover it' feeling. It is a worthy purchase, and while it is not my number one Aaberg album, it is definately one of my faves.

    5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2004-05-13

I own a lot of new age music, and this CD from Philip Aaberg is definitely one of my very favorite discs. He has a real touch and style that captivates the listener and always impacts the emotions. The title track, High Plains, is perhaps my favorite new age piano piece of all my collection. Buy this one!!

5 out of 5 stars King of all piano solo albums.......2004-02-22

I love so many of these types of albums, Phil Aaberg, Michael Jones, David Lanz, but I've probably played this one twice as much as any other. It's dynamics are very subtle, even you can miss them a few times until you notice them, and that's what set's this album apart.
For me, what Pet Sounds is to Rock, this is to New Age.
    Thank you Phil Aaberg.

5 out of 5 stars No Wonder They Sing.......2003-10-30

This album, Aaberg's debut, was an early discovery for me, and has stood the test of time in my collection. I've owned several versions and giving them all hours of play. I find this both excellent background music and excellent performance work that can be enjoyed for itself, without any of the trappings of new age labels. Aaberg is first and foremost a player and writer, not a new age musicion, and this shows in his careful crafting and ability to vary his style and choice of tonalities.

The music is evocative of the Northwest, but not in a geographic or scenic sense. Instead, he tried to build a picture that has as much inner landscape as it does reference to places and events in that world. He couples this with exceptional musicality, where themse actually come into being, vary and mutate in an orderly progression rather than meandering endlessly as is sometimes the care elsewhere in this genre.

Good new age music is simply jazz in another guise - perhaps a bit more focused on the melodic rather than the harmonic content. In it's essence though, Aaberg's music rides as free as the world that inspired the music. It doesn't try to overwhelm, but reaches for a fine emotional balance that quickly starts to carry the listeners along, only to deposit them later in a place that is somehow better.

Current buyers who are interested in adding an exemplary CD to their pianist/composer collections should be delighted at its availability at an easily affordable price. Aaberg is not prolific, but his work is of consistently high quality. A worthy purchase for the contemplative.

The "Classic Western" is never-ending...always at the forefront of the Film Industry---whenever our film-makers run out of projects, they bring back "The Western", fresh and never wandering far from the camera's eye or the composers pen---Silva Screen has been a leader in the "Compilation Department", so is it any wonder they release some hard-to-find scores...never fear my trail pardners...here they are!

Let me begin this review by stating the opening track "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN"(1960-Elmer Bernstein), is without a doubt, one of the most recognizable Western Themes ever composed---the same for "HOW THE WEST WAS WON"(1962-Alfred Newman), two outstanding composers with unforgettable film scores---but the score for "GETTYSBURG"(1993-Randy Edelman), just about steals the show...over fifteen minutes in length, covers the Main Title right up to the Reunion and Finale, with a special arrangement for a Suite, highlighting our freedom and liberty for ALL!

But let's get to the hard-to-find scores---"THE PROFESSIONALS"(1966-Maurice Jarre), starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin, great score with Jack Palance as the villian...Jarre's first attempt of scoring an American Western, captures the mood perfectly---"WILD BUNCH"(1969-Jerry Fielding), the classic Sam Packinpah film has been re-issued on DVD in it's entire uncut length, and composer Fielding completes the picture with this outstanding score---"WILD ROVERS"(1971-Jerry Goldsmith), this Blake Edwards film sets the wheels in motion for our composer to write a gripping score of the West, and how it was coming to the end of the trail, as civilization was closing in.

There you have it Buckaroo's...as we drive our herd to Abilene with Nic Raine(conductor) and The City Of Prague Philharmonic riding point, making sure no stragglers are left behind, we must meet our deadline at the rail head...James Fitzpatrick(producer) and Reynold da Silva(executive producer) giving us a fair price for our beef, this is how the West was, and through the recordings of Silva Screen Records is again...so "film-score-buffs", lean back in the saddle and watch the sun come up over the prairie skies...we're back when our country was just coming of age, gotta love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this CD! It offers a relaxing, yet entertaining, look at things you could find "Down a Country Road."

I especially liked the piece by Rustin Hamilton on Winfield's Flat Picking Championship. The music adds so much to the story - you feel like you are right there.

I was concerned that I might only listen to the CD once, but have enjoyed it many times. It never gets old. It's like your favorite book that you pick up again and again because you enjoy it so much.

This is perfect for anyone who enjoys (or wants to enjoy) a slower-paced lifestyle.
